The Reborn Scummy A and the Sickly O Got Together - Chapter 13
To most people, this dinner was a perfect beginning and end.
After the gathering dispersed, Feng Baiming returned to the master bedroom on the first floor with her sister and parents, only to find her daughter occupying the spacious room.
Her mother was the first to speak. “When it comes down to it, we’ve really caused the Lu family a lot of trouble.”
Feng Shaoyang ran to the floor-to-ceiling window, gazing at the shadowy trees and bushes under the nightfall, and couldn’t help but marvel, “Setting everything else aside, this old estate is warm in winter and cool in summer, even more comfortable than the standalone Western-style house we live in.”
Feng Baiming glanced at her father, sensing he had something to say. Under his daughter’s questioning gaze, the middle-aged alpha shared his thoughts, “A-Ming, both alphas from the Lu family were quite attentive to you tonight.”
Feng Baiming dismissed the idea. “If rambling about boring topics counts as attentiveness, then it only has the opposite effect.”
Her mother immediately perked up with interest. She had been observing her daughter all evening and offered her own assessment, “Lu Ping is the eldest son and grandson of the Lu family. Barring any surprises, he’ll likely be the heir. But…”
The middle-aged woman gave a less-than-favorable evaluation, “He doesn’t seem steady at all far less impressive than his younger sister, Luo Mingyue. That female alpha is much more admirable.”
“You’re just taken by how pretty the kid is,” Feng’s father countered. “But she seems too quiet and reserved. She does come across as gentle, but a more outgoing and lively personality would be better.”
He pondered for a moment before adding, “Don’t you think she seems a bit weathered for her age? Like she lacks youthful energy?”
Feng Baiming recalled the things Luo Mingyue had said and wanted to argue that this was hardly the demeanor of someone lacking vitality. Yet, remembering the look in her eyes when they first met, she conceded, “She does carry a presence that someone her age shouldn’t have.”
Feng Baiming found Luo Mingyue to be a deeply contradictory person. Her current age and appearance still bore traces of youthful innocence.
But when she lowered her head in silence moments after smiling gently at you with downcast eyes Feng Baiming found herself captivated by that quiet composure.
She had to admit that this very contradiction made it impossible not to be drawn to her, to want to understand her.
Feng Baiming thought to herself that it wasn’t attraction or fondness just that she had never met someone like this before.
It was fascinating. What could she have gone through to make her, at just eighteen, occasionally exude the aura of someone much older?
She was like a delicate, beautiful night-blooming cereus, stunning in the moment, yet on the verge of withering the next.
At the peak of her youth, Feng Baiming sat at her desk, resting her chin thoughtfully in her hand. “Luo Mingyue’s position is awkward. Her situation in the Lu family might not be very favorable.”
Feng Shaoyang bounded over to her. As a female alpha who had been in relationships, she suddenly remarked, “Big sis, did you know that finding someone beautiful might just be an appreciation for aesthetics? But if you feel pity or sympathy for them, that might be the beginning of love.”
Feng Baiming was speechless. She figured spring had only just passed, leaving her sister still stuck in the season of budding romance.
“Why do you keep relating everything to love lately?”
Feng Baiming shook her head coldly in denial. “I’ve just never met someone like this before whether alpha, beta, or omega. I’ve never encountered anyone like her.”
“She’s peculiar.” Feng Baiming frowned. “I don’t want to speak ill of others behind their backs. Perhaps she’s trying to get my attention after all, alphas are sometimes just instinct-driven ‘animals.’ But I don’t think she’s that type.”
“She hasn’t fully differentiated yet,” Feng’s father said. “There’s barely any scent of pheromones. Calling her an alpha now is a stretch; she’s practically still a child.”
“It’s you I’m more concerned about,” Feng’s mother said, looking at her daughter. “Don’t you think you’re paying too much attention to this Luo Mingyue? When I asked her age today, you answered for her. I thought you’d made a new friend in just one afternoon.”
Feng Baiming chuckled but cleverly avoided admitting that she had indeed been overly focused on this alpha.
She rephrased it: “What she did genuinely succeeded in capturing my attention.”
So, Feng Baiming thought, it’s not that I’m drawn to Luo Mingyue, it’s that Luo Mingyue is just too cunning.
I’m not someone so shallow as to judge by appearances alone. Feng Baiming opened her English book, where a simple handmade bookmark was tucked inside.
As she skimmed the three lines written on it, she couldn’t help but wonder: Why has such a charming alpha, who clearly knows how to win girls over, never been with anyone?
Could it really be, as her younger sister put it, that she’s a “central air conditioner”, warm to everyone but never committing?
That would indeed make her quite the scoundrel.
Luo Mingyue pulled out a pen and tried to mimic the handwriting on the bookmark. She was merely copying the strokes her writing looked free and effortless, but it lacked the original’s depth and spirit.
At best, it was smooth and stylish, boldly spelling out four characters:
“Women’s Best Friend.”
Meanwhile, the very person Feng Baiming had privately labeled as a “Women’s Best Friend” was on the rooftop for some fresh air. The pool was being cleaned, and Lu Xi and a few others were planning an outdoor pool party at home.
Luo Mingyue sat at the edge of the roof, gazing at the sea of city lights in the distance.
It reminded her of her past life, how she had been strictly disciplined as a child, how Lu Ping and his friends had ganged up on her, sneering, “Luo Mingyue, you’re not even part of the Lu family. How shameless of you to cling to us.”
The first time she had gone crying to her grandmother or mother about it, her mother had said, “Are they wrong? You are just a parasite leeching off the Lu family. How many times must I tell you? You never should have been born.”
Her grandmother had made Lu Ping and the others write self-criticisms, but she had also scolded Luo Mingyue: “A noble person seeks harmony without uniformity. If all you do is tattle, others will only look down on you.”
That was when she realized she had no home. As a child, she had wiped her tears and run to the rooftop, sitting at the edge, watching the distant fireworks and the countless lights below, dreaming of one day having a home of her own.
She wasn’t greedy, she just wanted someone she loved, who loved her in return.
A small house, three meals a day, two people holding each other in this bustling yet lonely world, waking up to see that someone was still there beside her.
To know that today, someone loved her, and she loved them, that would be the greatest happiness of her life.
I came to this world. I was loved. I loved someone.
Luo Mingyue had spent her previous life striving relentlessly, never stopping until death, ultimately yearning for just a glance of approval from her mother and relatives.
Yet those who hurt her the deepest were always the ones she cared about most.
She clutched her right hand the warmth that had finally reached her soul had come from Feng Baiming.
“Miss Feng!” Luo Mingyue silently mouthed the name, her eyes curving into crescents as she glanced at the distant lights before turning to head back to her room.
It was then that the voices of Lu Xi and Lu Le reached her.
“Didn’t Luo Mingyue say she wasn’t interested before?” Lu Xi remarked. “But look at tonight, is she trying to steal someone from Lu Ping?”
Lu Le replied, “Isn’t she like this with everyone? At school, she acts all tender and devoted toward every omega, pretty or plain, rich or poor. And with that face of hers.”
A pause. “If she really does compete with Lu Ping, I doubt Lu Ping stands a chance.”
Lu Xi chuckled. “Wasn’t she into Lu Jia? They’re distant cousins, three generations removed. Honestly, if those two got together, they’d be doing everyone else a favor.”
Then she scoffed. “But that little brat Lu Jia looks down on Luo Mingyue. Meanwhile, Luo Mingyue follows her around like a lovesick puppy, always protecting her.”
