The Real Heiress Just Wants to Be a Lazy Fish - Chapter 14
Chapter 14: The Talisman
Zhao Zhengzhi’s mind wasn’t the sharpest. At first, he didn’t understand why his biological niece suddenly brought up being almost bitten by a dog as a child. But after seeing Xiao Ran unable to stop snickering, and even the usually stony-faced Jiang Zitan cracking a smile, Zhao Zhengzhi immediately realized that Tao Yitong’s words definitely had a double meaning.
After thinking about it more carefully…
She was calling his shouting “dog barking”!
Zhao Zhengzhi’s face instantly turned from pale to green. He instinctively clenched his fists and took two steps forward, looking like he wanted to get violent he indeed had a prior record for such behavior.
Jiang Zitan immediately stood up, shielding Tao Yitong behind her, and barked a low reprimand: “Uncle! What do you think you’re doing?”
She usually ignored these relatives, but that didn’t mean they weren’t afraid of her actually getting angry. Currently, they relied on Jiang Zitan to maintain their comfortable lifestyles. Especially after Jiang Hong made his stance clear, no matter how much they made a scene on the surface, they didn’t dare cross Jiang Zitan’s bottom line.
A straw man like Zhao Zhengzhi only dared to jump around when Jiang Zitan ignored him. The moment Jiang Zitan got serious, his arrogance withered instantly.
“She I’m going to teach my own niece what it means to respect one’s elders!” Zhao Zhengzhi’s face turned from green to a deep red.
“But I didn’t disrespect my elders?” Tao Yitong’s expression was pure and innocent. It was precisely because of this that Zhao Zhengzhi hadn’t realized she was insulting him at first. “I was just talking about something that happened when I was little. Uncle, why are you so agitated?”
Zhao Zhengzhi’s lips trembled with rage. They were too alike this biological niece of his and his sister were exactly the same. His sister was like this as a child too, hiding behind her mother’s colleagues to tattle on him. Those people were all fierce and terrifying; even his own father had to bow and scrape before them, and then he would beat Zhao Zhengzhi mercilessly to appease their anger.
He glanced at Jiang Zitan, hoping she would say something.
To his surprise, Jiang Zitan, who had always been raised by Jiang Hong to be strictly disciplined, actually started lying through her teeth: “Tongtong didn’t mean anything else. Uncle, don’t overthink it.”
Don’t think he didn’t know Jiang Zitan was secretly laughing just now! How could she possibly not know the hidden meaning in Tao Yitong’s words?
“Exactly. Someone was clearly talking about their childhood. Why does someone else feel the need to cast themselves in that role? And cast themselves as a do” Xiao Ran muttered in a volume loud enough for everyone in the room to hear: “What did the poor doggies ever do wrong?”
“You people!” Zhao Zhengzhi pointed at them, shaking. But before he could make his next move, the security guards pushed open the door to Jiang Zitan’s office.
“Uncle, I assume you don’t need the security guards to ‘invite’ you out,” Jiang Zitan said, her tone carrying a veiled threat.
Zhao Zhengzhi glared viciously at Tao Yitong.
Tao Yitong, however, gave him a “sweet” and generous smile. “Take care. Watch your step on the stairs. Stay safe”
“Humph!” Zhao Zhengzhi was so fuming that he forgot why he had come in the first place. Two burly security guards stood on either side of him, making him look like a tiny chick. He let out a cold snort, turned, and left.
Halfway down the hall, he felt his pocket and realized there was something he hadn’t left behind. The man, clouded by rage, finally remembered the true purpose of his visit. Just as he prepared to turn back to Jiang Zitan’s office, he was inexplicably tripped…
When Secretary Fang entered the office, she was struggling to hold back her laughter. She told Jiang Zitan that the troublemaker had just accidentally tumbled down the stairs apparently by tripping over his own feet—and had ended up with a massive lump on his head.
“Hoh.” Xiao Ran cast a shocked glance at Tao Yitong. Has this girl’s mouth been blessed? She just told Zhao Zhengzhi to watch his step and stay safe, and he immediately fell down the stairs?
Of course, Tao Yitong’s mouth hadn’t been blessed; she had simply facilitated the event herself.
“Was he sent to the hospital?” Jiang Zitan asked as a matter of routine.
“He was.” Secretary Fang was also gloating inwardly, but they couldn’t give people a reason to gossip; the necessary arrangements had to be made.
“That’s fine then. Go back to your work.”
Secretary Fang left the office and closed the door. Immediately, Xiao Ran’s boisterous laughter echoed through the room.
“That guy finally got what was coming to him! Haha…” Once she had laughed her fill, Xiao Ran gave Tao Yitong a big thumbs up. “You’re the impressive one. Your words carry the power of law!”
Tao Yitong gave her a shy smile, her expression revealing a hint of slyness.
Xiao Ran narrowed her eyes slightly. She knew that this “real daughter” of the Jiang family wasn’t some simple, naive girl.
“Uncle was spoiled by Grandfather. His words and actions can be quite extreme. Try to avoid him in the future, okay?” Jiang Zitan felt her sister’s earlier description was quite apt; Zhao Zhengzhi was like a mad dog that would bite randomly when it went crazy. It was best to stay away from him.
“Okay” Aside from sending him to the hospital every now and then, she would try to stay away from him.
“Ahem, let’s put Zhao Zhengzhi aside for a moment. Miss Tao, I have something I want to ask you.” Xiao Ran cleared her throat twice. The atmosphere between the two next to her was becoming… increasingly exclusive. Even though there were three people in the office, she felt isolated. She had to speak up to remind them of her presence.
Xiao Ran’s gaze landed on the dolphin felt charm on Tao Yitong’s canvas bag, her tone filled with undeniable excitement. “Is this dolphin the one handmade by An Yu?”
Tao Yitong froze for a moment, looking at the dolphin charm given by “Xiao Yu.” It took her a while to remember that her teammate’s other identity was quite famous. This charm was something Xiao Yu had made during a variety show. Later, many merchants made almost identical accessories. How did Xiao Ran tell it was an original at a glance?
“She said she gave it away in a lucky draw. I didn’t expect the lucky winner to be you…”
Xiao Ran’s gaze suddenly became fervent. Tao Yitong felt her skin crawl under the stare.
“Are you a fan of An Yu?”
“Yes…” Sort of? She definitely had to support her teammate’s career.
“Is this dolphin charm for sale?!”
Tao Yitong shook her head. At this point, she only thought Xiao Ran was a fanatic fan of Xiao Yu, so she declined without thinking much. This was a gift from a teammate; how could she sell it?
But Xiao Ran had a persistence that Tao Yitong couldn’t quite understand, using both soft and hard tactics as if she wouldn’t stop until she reached her goal. Tao Yitong only managed to leave the office smoothly with Jiang Zitan’s help. As she stood at the stairwell, breathing a sigh of relief and thinking how terrifying hardcore fans were, she accidentally spotted a folded yellow paper in the corner.
This seemed to be the spot where Zhao Zhengzhi fell?
Out of professional alertness, she immediately stepped on the paper. After seeing no one passing by, she picked it up.
When she opened it, it was indeed covered in symbols outlined in a black-red liquid.
Tao Yitong’s expression instantly turned grim. She had originally planned to wait until Zhao Zhengzhi was discharged before sending him another “surprise,” but now it seemed she would have to take a trip to the hospital ahead of schedule.
