The Real Heiress Just Wants to Be a Lazy Fish - Chapter 12
Chapter 12: Assassin
Peng Shuang stood in the corner of the interrogation room. Though she wasn’t the direct target of the terrifying, oppressive pressure emanating from this Special Affairs Bureau member, she still felt as if she were having trouble breathing.
She couldn’t quite describe what it was; it was likely another thing that required her to reshape her worldview. However, seeing the suspect roll his eyes as if about to faint… wasn’t that a bit dramatic?
What kind of trick is this suspect trying to pull now?
In truth, Peng Shuang had misunderstood him. The killer would have loved to show off his acting skills, but at this moment, what he saw from his perspective was entirely different from what Peng Shuang saw.
What Peng Shuang saw was the guest from the Special Affairs Bureau poking the man’s head with a mutated hand. Aside from the claw looking a bit frightening, there wasn’t much else to it.
But for the killer, he felt as if he had been transported to a different place. He could no longer see the lights from the corridor; all around him, thick black mist churned. Tears fell from his eyes unconsciously because he saw that this black mist was being exhaled by a monster.
He slumped in his chair, his legs completely refusing to move. The monster was close so close he could feel its breath.
There were two red “moons” in the sky, but they moved occasionally. Those weren’t moons; they were clearly the monster’s eyes! The monster’s head was like a small mountain, its true form hidden in the black mist, with only a pair of massive goat horns vaguely visible.
Clang, clang…
The killer heard the sound of sliding chains, like the Soul-Hooking Messengers of the Underworld coming to take a ghost. He was scared out of his wits, and it took a long time to realize the sound came from right in front of him.
The figure shrouded in black robes took two steps forward. The sound came from her feet; two long chains were fastened to her ankles at one end, while the other end extended toward the “mountain” shrouded in black mist.
Hungry…
Eat.
The voice, sounding as if it emerged from hell, echoed in his mind, making his soul vibrate with a buzzing hum.
“It wants to eat you,” the black-robed person said, her low voice carrying a hint of mockery.
“Don’t… don’t eat me,” the killer shook his head in panic.
“Although things like you don’t taste very good, it has been hungry for a long time. It wouldn’t mind having you as a snack.” As soon as she finished speaking, the “mountain” above them trembled with excitement.
“No, no, you can’t harm ordinary people, you can’t…”
She sneered. The claw—which seemed to have nothing to do with humanity dug into the killer’s face and, with a slight pull, tore it off.
No scene of blood and gore appeared. Behind that skin was a face with no features.
“Just as I thought. Wear human skin for too long, and you really start to think you’re human?”
Peng Shuang gasped when the man’s skin was torn off. The thing revealed behind it made her instinctively reach for her waist. It was her first time seeing this kind of Deviant Demon; despite having seen many major scenes, the first sight of this thing gave her goosebumps.
The faceless monster convulsed as if struck by lightning. After a short while, its legs straightened; it had fainted, but it wasn’t dead.
Eat, eat…
The gluttonous monster with blood-red eyes like blood moons seemed to take her words seriously.
Go eat yourself.
One day, I will eat you.
The unnameable pressure in the air vanished. Peng Shuang instinctively breathed a sigh of relief.
“What is this thing?” Peng Shuang muttered to herself.
“A type of Deviant Demon. They have no combat power themselves, but the trouble is they can occupy the bodies of humans who are about to die or have been dead for less than a day. Fortunately, they are rare and their intelligence is questionable. The Special Affairs Bureau conducted several large-scale sweeps about thirty years ago; I didn’t expect there to be any stragglers left.” The guest from the Bureau took out a cord of unknown material and tied a knot around the demon’s neck a cute butterfly knot.
She knew before coming that Peng Shuang was the liaison between the police and the Special Affairs Bureau, so she didn’t hide her actions.
“Alright, the Special Affairs Bureau will take over this case. Someone will be here to take it away shortly.”
“Did you find out its motive for the crime?” Since it wasn’t human, everything it had confessed earlier was overturned. Although Peng Shuang didn’t know exactly what the guest had just done, it wasn’t hard to guess she had used a special method to interrogate the prisoner.
The person hidden in the black robe paused. She had indeed interrogated some key clues from the creature’s soul. “It’s the one from the Jiang Group who offended someone. But it went to the wrong place during its first attempt, which led to that one victim. Since it couldn’t return without completing its mission, it remained lurking in the residential area.”
After its soul was threatened with death, the demon had coughed up everything it knew, only begging for its life.
“A mission? It’s an assassin?” Peng Shuang felt her skin crawl. Letting such a thing hide among crowds as an assassin was a terrifying thought.
“Mhm. However, there are no others of its kind around it. This one should be an exception. The Bureau will investigate thoroughly.”
Tao Yitong’s face, hidden beneath the black robe, was somewhat grim. It wasn’t just an assassin; it was a Deviant Demon being kept by a human. Unfortunately, it had only seen its “handler,” not the employer. However, it shouldn’t be related to the cannibal. After all, cannibals prefer a fresh taste; Jiang Zitan was still useful to the cannibal for now, and the cannibal’s methods weren’t so reckless.
This meant there was a second faction targeting Jiang Zitan, and their methods were even more aggressive.
Jiang Zitan’s current situation could be described as perilous, surrounded by wolves and tigers. Tao Yitong felt nervous for her just looking at the events that had occurred recently. Fortunately, she had transferred over in time; otherwise, she didn’t know how Zitan would face this alone.
She really does attract trouble…
Thinking of Jiang Zitan, Tao Yitong seemed to smell that faint, sweet fragrance again. Inadvertently, she felt an urge to bite something.
Well, she was “troubled” by her too, but she was different from them she had no bad intentions!
If any of those other things dared to reach out their claws, they could expect to have their hands and arms chopped off together!
Before coming out, Tao Yitong had added some special soothing incense at home. Someone who had been tormented by various accidents for days and hadn’t slept well should have a good dream tonight. She was also scared by the accidents of the past few days, only daring to sneak out after leaving plenty of safety measures at home.
When the killer was caught earlier, she saw his target was Jiang Zitan. The cannibal’s eyes and ears had just been there, and Tao Yitong didn’t dare be careless at this juncture. The more she thought about it, the more she felt the killer was strange, which was why she requested this special interrogation. As it turned out, the questioning yielded an unexpected “surprise.”
“One more thing.” Thinking of the cannibal, Tao Yitong stopped her steps just as she was about to leave. She glanced at the officer standing by the door. Peng Shuang still carried a trace of the smell of decay—so faint that humans couldn’t smell it. This should be the officer the colleagues mentioned who was overly focused on the cannibal case; she was the one who discovered both bone pits.
The colleagues were worried that her getting too deep into this would lead to her death.
Tao Yitong offered a kind warning: “Try not to get too deeply involved with the cannibal case. It’s dangerous.”
Upon hearing this, Peng Shuang clenched her fists. In that moment, her emotions fluctuated wildly, and her body seemed to tremble.
But when she spoke a moment later, her tone sounded quite calm. “May I ask about the progress of the case?”
“We have some leads.” Tao Yitong couldn’t say much, but she could guarantee Peng Shuang: “Don’t worry. This time, it won’t escape.”
To give an account to the countless souls of the victims, and to ensure that innocent people like Jiang Zitan who are targeted no longer suffer, she would definitely put a period on this matter before she retired.
