The Real Heiress Just Wants to Be a Lazy Fish - Chapter 11
Chapter 11: Interrogation
Jiang Zitan wanted to go and see who was at the door, but Tao Yitong reacted faster. She directly pressed the person who was about to stand up back into her chair.
“I’ll go check. The patient needs to rest!”
Even though she was sick, Jiang Zitan wasn’t so weak that she couldn’t walk a few steps, especially since her body had mostly returned to normal. Tao Yitong stopped her because Ah Fu had sent an alert.
In the pitch-black corridor, a figure of average height stood at the entrance of Jiang Zitan’s apartment. He looked nervous, frequently wiping his palms on his clothes. He was holding something, and whenever he wiped his hands, he would switch that object to the other hand.
In a corner just above his head, a pair of scarlet points of light flickered to life, staring intently at him.
“Who is it?” Tao Yitong asked softly while looking through the peephole. Outside was pitch black, but she could vaguely make out a human silhouette.
“I… I’m from downstairs. You… our ceiling and walls are leaking badly. I… I want to see if it’s your bathroom floor leaking.” The man outside spoke stutteringly, sounding somewhat simple and honest.
Coming to check a bathroom floor while carrying a weapon? Tao Yitong let out a snort. she raised her hand against the door, preparing to give the man outside a “big gift,” but then Ah Fu heard another movement. After a thought, she lowered her hand.
“Tongtong, who is it?” Jiang Zitan felt something was off and followed her out.
“He says he’s from downstairs. Their ceiling is leaking, so he wants to check if it’s our bathroom floor.” Tao Yitong repeated this in a normal volume, and just as she was about to whisper to Jiang Zitan about the man’s suspicious nature, she saw the other woman’s face change instantly.
Jiang Zitan remembered that a couple in their thirties lived downstairs. The husband was tall and spoke standard Mandarin. Through the peephole, she judged that the man outside wasn’t tall enough, and both his voice and age were wrong. It was pitch black outside and she couldn’t see his face clearly, but she couldn’t help but feel that the man’s silhouette looked somewhat similar to the suspect’s photo Xiao Ran had just sent…
As for the bathroom leak, she had owned this house for several years and had never encountered such an issue. The credibility of his claim was highly doubtful.
He might be a relative of that couple, but with a murder having just occurred in the community, it was better to be cautious. She chose to call the police and contacted other security personnel.
As it turned out, the man outside was indeed a problem.
Click, click…
The lock on their door was being tampered with.
Jiang Zitan breathed a slight sigh of relief after seeing the latest message on her phone. She pulled Tao Yitong into the main bedroom and locked the door behind them. “Don’t be afraid, help is coming soon.”
Seeing that she didn’t need to handle the scene herself, Tao Yitong immediately turned into a “whining monster,” shrinking into Jiang Zitan’s arms. She smelled so fragrant and felt so soft; she really wanted to take a bite.
Wait, wait, wait since when did I start developing in such a perverted direction?
Meanwhile, the man outside lost his patience. The sound of him picking the lock grew louder. Tao Yitong could hear that the lock was about to be forced open, but just then, a dull thud came from outside, as if something had slammed into their door, making the apartment tremble slightly.
Noisy voices erupted outside; it sounded like a group of people had gathered. Jiang Zitan checked her phone again, and her heart finally settled. She gently patted Tao Yitong’s back and said, “It’s okay. He’s been caught.”
“Knock, knock, knock.” A polite knock came from the door. “It’s safe now.”
It was a woman’s voice.
Jiang Zitan looked through the peephole. Besides the people she had called, several police officers were standing at her door. Although she had called the police, she hadn’t expected them to arrive so quickly.
Tao Yitong poked her head out from behind Jiang Zitan and realized the officer at the door looked familiar… Oh, she remembered. It was the one she met at the entrance after giving her statement previously.
Tao Yitong didn’t speak, but her eyes flickered with a hint of seriousness as she looked at the officer. There had been nothing unusual during their previous meeting, but now, this officer was tainted with the scent of a vengeful ghost and… the smell of a decaying corpse that she remembered all too well.
Peng Shuang was also surprised to see Tao Yitong. She remembered her as the unlucky pedestrian who almost got hit by a falling murder weapon. Now, the killer’s next target was her home?
Was this just bad luck, or was the killer doing this on purpose? Peng Shuang’s intuition told her this wasn’t a random act.
She hadn’t come specifically because of Jiang Zitan’s call; she had already been staking out the area for the suspect, which was why she arrived so fast.
While Jiang Zitan and Peng Shuang were talking, Tao Yitong focused her attention on the struggling suspect. Even in handcuffs, he hadn’t given up; it took two officers to hold him down.
The officers told him to behave, but the “simple-looking” killer had veins bulging on his face, and his body was trembling. He looked odd. Most importantly, his eyes kept drifting toward Jiang Zitan. Tao Yitong stared at him until he caught her terrifying gaze, and then he lowered his head in fear and became quiet.
This man is definitely here for Jiang Zitan, Tao Yitong frowned slightly.
“Alright, it’s over.” Jiang Zitan softly comforted her seemingly terrified sister. She appeared calm, but her tightly clenched fists had only just relaxed. When the door was about to give way, she had considered the worst-case scenario.
Fortunately, it was a close call with no harm done.
Mhm, it’s over, but only for now… Tao Yitong sighed inwardly. When you’re guarding a piece of ‘sweet meat,’ everyone wants a bite.
After the suspect was taken back to the station, he confessed to the murder quite readily. He claimed he did it because he had a terminal illness and no money for treatment. Seeing the wealthy people in this high-end community driving luxury cars made him jealous, so he decided to take a few rich people with him before he died. As for his targets, he claimed they were completely random.
The killer sat in the interrogation room with a “dead pig unafraid of boiling water” attitude, making one’s teeth itch with frustration. No matter what the police asked, he acted indifferent until they asked why he threw the murder weapon out the window. His gaze changed then.
“When did I throw a knife?” The killer showed a look of confusion that didn’t seem like a lie. “I left after I killed that guy. I left the knife on the floor. I don’t know what happened after that.”
This statement matched the results of the crime scene investigation. The other officers looked at each other, but only Peng Shuang knew the truth. The knife flying out of the window indeed had nothing to do with the killer, but she felt his previous statements were partially hidden. Although he acted indifferent, Peng Shuang keenly sensed signs of a guilty conscience when he spoke.
However, she had no evidence, and the man seemed well-prepared. The interrogation was at a standstill.
Peng Shuang’s eyes were red from exhaustion. Just as she was at her wit’s end, she received a message. Her colleagues saw the usually calm Captain Peng suddenly stand up, staring at her phone in shock.
“What’s wrong?” Her colleagues grew nervous, fearing another major case had broken out.
“It’s… it’s nothing. Let’s call it a day for now…” Peng Shuang suppressed her shock and resumed her expressionless face. Seeing her return to “normal,” the other colleagues felt relieved. Getting off work early was always better!
Peng Shuang gripped her phone. After the other colleagues left, she prepared a separate interrogation room and brought the killer in. The man sat in the chair yawning, still trying to chat with her.
“I’m so sleepy. It’s so late; doesn’t the police lady go home? If you want to keep questioning me, can I have a cup of coffee?”
The corner of Peng Shuang’s mouth twitched into a cold sneer.
She wasn’t the one interrogating the killer this time. It was a distinguished guest from the Special Affairs Bureau. This was the first time in years she had seen someone from the Bureau come to conduct an interrogation personally, and she heard it wasn’t a mere clerk.
I hope he can still smile that happily in a moment.
As the killer was dozing off, the lights in the interrogation room suddenly went out. He jumped in fright. The only light remaining was filtered in from outside the room. The murderer, who had been indifferent a moment ago, finally showed a look of unease.
“Police lady, can you turn on the light?”
Peng Shuang didn’t answer. When the killer tried to speak again, he suddenly noticed a human shadow had appeared by the door at some unknown time.
He broke into a cold sweat and instinctively tried to back away, but handcuffed to the interrogation table, he was going nowhere.
Peng Shuang stepped back two paces. This guest from the Special Affairs Bureau was completely shrouded in a black robe. Their identities were classified and not easily known to outsiders.
Tap, tap, tap…
The shadow suddenly moved, walking toward the killer step by step. She said nothing and did nothing, yet the murderer, who had cared nothing for killing or death, began to shake like a sieve, looking as if he might foam at the mouth and faint any second.
“You intended to kill Jiang Zitan today.” The voice hidden beneath the black robe was quite low, likely processed, but it was recognizably female. “Why?”
“I… I just… picked… at random…” The killer’s face was covered in cold sweat, and his clothes were drenched. He couldn’t form a sentence and could only barely stammer out a few words, still sticking to his previous statement.
Halfway through his sentence, however, he saw this strange person raise a hand. He clearly saw that when the person’s hand was first exposed, it was fair and small. But as it approached his head, it transformed into a monster-like claw covered in fine scales!
His skull felt as fragile as tofu beneath those monstrous claws.
“I suggest you think carefully before you speak,” her dark voice echoed in his ear. “Otherwise, I’ll pull your brain out, and I’ll still get the answer I want.”
