The Real Heiress Just Wants to Be a Lazy Fish - Chapter 10
Chapter 10: Celestial Aspect
“Sister, take your medicine before sleeping. It’s a bit bitter do you want some candy?”
As her body temperature gradually rose, Jiang Zitan’s consciousness unknowingly blurred. She didn’t know how much time had passed before she heard Tao Yitong’s voice.
She wanted to open her eyes, but it was a struggle. Then, she heard her sister muttering to herself: “Do I really affect the people around me?”
Tao Yitong let out a soft sigh. What a pity; someone had once read her fortune, and she didn’t actually possess such an ability. If she truly could cause bad luck for everyone near her, Tao Yitong would have already found an enemy organization to infiltrate. She’d eat their food, drink their water, and then cause their downfall without lifting a single finger!
However, ever since Jiang Zitan met her, unfortunate events had indeed been constant. Given those rumors, it was truly a credit to her “meal ticket” for not despising her. Jiang Zitan… was a good person.
As Tao Yitong’s mind wandered, she didn’t notice the patient opening her eyes until a burning palm pressed against the back of her hand. Tao Yitong snapped back to reality to hear the patient’s weak yet firm voice: “Don’t overthink. Everyone gets sick. You can’t blame the person next to you for having ‘bad luck’ every time someone falls ill. That’s all feudal superstition; don’t listen to them.”
“If anyone is to blame, I can only blame myself for not covering up properly last night and catching a chill.”
Jiang Zitan was afraid Tao Yitong would let those absurd rumors get to her, so even though she was delirious with fever, she didn’t forget to offer guidance.
The warmth from her palm seemed to reach Tao Yitong’s heart, and the girl’s eyes curved into a smile. “Sister, you… you really are like someone who grew up by our mother’s side.”
The “Mother” Tao Yitong referred to was Mother Tao. Although Jiang Zitan hadn’t grown up with her biological mother, her personality was very similar to Mother Tao’s. Placed among that Jiang family crowd, she had an air of being a complete misfit one could tell at a glance she wasn’t their biological child.
The Jiang family would probably need a genetic mutation to produce a daughter like this… Wait, did I just insult myself by saying that? Tao Yitong fell silent for a moment.
Before taking on this special mission, the Bureau had already given Tao Yitong the files on the Jiang family. She probably knew more about the shady dealings the Jiangs had done over the past twenty years than the people involved. Once the cannibal case was solved, everyone would receive their deserved punishment. In this soil full of selfishness and malice, a flower that remained untainted by the mud was all the more precious.
Jiang Zitan felt exceptionally dizzy. She didn’t know if it was her imagination, but she felt her sister’s tone had changed significantly just now, as if she were a different person.
“Sister, take the medicine. The doctor said it works fast, it’s just a bit bitter.” Tao Yitong held the special medicine sent by the Bureau to Jiang Zitan’s lips, her tone returning to its previous soft and delicate state.
Jiang Zitan took a sip of the dark, murky medicine, and her expression changed instantly. She had taken plenty of bitter medicine before, but this bowl was more bitter than anything she had ever tasted. It was no exaggeration to say it was bitter enough to make one’s stomach cramp.
“Good girl, come on, open up” Tao Yitong’s tone was like coaxing a child. Jiang Zitan instinctively opened her mouth and tasted something sweet.
“I loved this kind of handmade candy when I was little. I happened to see someone selling it on the way back, so I bought some.” Tao Yitong shook the plastic bag in her hand, which contained a few round pieces of maltose candy.
Jiang Zitan noted the appearance of the candy, thinking she should buy more for Tongtong to keep at home next time.
Remarkably, although the medicine was shockingly bitter, its effects were miraculous. Shortly after drinking it, Jiang Zitan felt the heat in her breath dissipate. A while later, she was able to sit up on her own, and the dizziness in her head had mostly cleared.
Tao Yitong had requested the best medicine. The Bureau’s experts had estimated that it would take Jiang Zitan at least two days to eliminate the sequelae, so they had prepared a three-day supply. However, no one expected Jiang Zitan’s fever to break by that evening, looking as healthy as if she had never been sick.
Tao Yitong sensed something was off. She quietly crouched in her room to contact the Bureau. The person on the other end was also incredulous; she had handled many ordinary people who had suffered Soul Loss, and she had never seen one lively again after only half a day of treatment.
It might be because her physical constitution is excellent, and her soul is very powerful…
Captain Tao, if you’re uneasy, find a way to arrange a meeting between her and me. Based on your description, the person from last night will definitely strike again. If they are related to the cannibal, we might find a breakthrough for our case! The voice on the line sounded slightly excited.
However, Tao Yitong fell into a rare moment of silence.
Captain Tao?
“Understood. I’ll arrange a meeting once I find a suitable opportunity.” By now, it was late. Tao Yitong’s room was unlit, and the shadows swallowed her as she sat in silence.
Jiang Zitan had been forced into the center of a game between two powers. Tao Yitong crouched on the floor for a while, then patted her face to psych herself up. She would protect Jiang Zitan; she wouldn’t let what happened in the past happen again.
Next door, a recovered Jiang Zitan was holding an online meeting. Her company seemed very busy lately; even as a patient, she had little time to rest.
Once the meeting seemed to be over, Tao Yitong sliced a plate of fruit and brought it to her. As she set it down, she accidentally noticed that Jiang Zitan’s computer screen displayed a star map.
“The Southern Dipper?” Tao Yitong recognized at a glance that this ladle-shaped constellation was not the Big Dipper. In ancient legends, the Big Dipper governs death, while the Southern Dipper governs life. There are only six stars in the Southern Dipper, hence the name ‘Nandou Six’. “Are you interested in astrology, Sister?”
“No, I just had a strange dream last night and saw this in it, so I was curious.” Jiang Zitan rubbed her temples. she felt she was being excessively concerned about last night’s nightmare.
Last night’s dream?
Tao Yitong’s mind raced. Jiang Zitan’s dream last night wasn’t necessarily just a dream it might be what that stolen portion of her soul had experienced! She tried to maintain an air of innocent curiosity, asking if Jiang Zitan remembered any specific details, especially any landmark locations.
“A bizarre dream.” Seeing Tao Yitong sitting so obediently and looking like a curious child, Jiang Zitan felt the urge to stroke her head again. She recalled the terrifying dream and seemed to faintly feel the pain of the flames burning her body again.
When Tao Yitong heard that those people used ghosts as fuel for the furnace, her heart sank. This was absolutely a forbidden dark art. What did they intend to do with Jiang Zitan’s soul?
She was certain that what Jiang Zitan saw wasn’t a dream, because Jiang Zitan had heard terms like “Special Affairs Bureau” and “espers” in the “dream.” Clearly, the enemy was also discussing her side’s situation.
And what did the Southern Dipper represent in the dream? Jiang Zitan said that among the six stars, five were dim, and only the Tianxiang star (the Celestial Aspect) was exceptionally bright. Tao Yitong remembered this was a star governing fortune and prosperity, but she wasn’t clear on the rest. It seemed she needed to look it up.
However… the more pressing matter was that those people had their plans ruined by her last night. There was no telling when they would make a comeback. Their method of summoning Jiang Zitan’s soul was very strange; she hadn’t sensed any abnormal energy fluctuations, which meant she couldn’t guard against them. She needed to find that woman; perhaps she could help.
Buzz…
Jiang Zitan’s phone on the desk suddenly vibrated. She picked it up and saw it was a message from Xiao Ran.
Are you still living in the Huayuan Residential Area? The police identified a suspect for yesterday’s murder, but he seems to have gone into hiding. Be careful when you go out, or maybe move somewhere else for a while? It’s quite scary.
Jiang Zitan remembered the eerie murder case; the catalyst for its discovery had been the murder weapon almost hitting Tongtong. Just as she was about to ask Xiao Ran for specifics, she suddenly heard her doorbell ring.
Ding-dong.
In the night, the abrupt sound of the doorbell echoed through the somewhat empty apartment. At this late hour, who would come to see her?
