The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 9
“I was just distracted, Teacher.”
Yu Kunian had cleared her morning schedule. They were originally supposed to start the tutoring in the evening, but now they had the chance to meet once more before noon.
Song Wenzhi’s class ended around ten-thirty. Yu Kunian had been waiting in the empty classroom next door for quite some time. She had sent a message to Song Wenzhi, and a few minutes after the bell rang, Song Wenzhi pushed open the door and walked toward her at an unhurried pace.
“President Yu.” Song Wenzhi looked down, her gaze meeting Yu Kunian’s upward glance.
Yu Kunian had chosen a seat by the window. The midday breeze carried the warmth of the sun, lightly fluttering Yu Kunian’s wavy hair. It drifted through the space between them, leaving behind a faint floral scent.
Those soft strands of hair slid over her shoulder and eventually came to rest against the fair skin of Yu Kunian’s neck. Song Wenzhi’s gaze was inadvertently drawn away by the sight. A moment later, she heard Yu Kunian let out a soft chuckle.
“Teacher Song, what is it?” Yu Kunian stood up quite naturally, while the Song Wenzhi before her snapped back to her senses, guiltily and quickly averting her eyes.
The corners of Yu Kunian’s lips curled upward. She heard Song Wenzhi say, “It’s nothing. President Yu, let’s begin the lesson.”
Having said that, Song Wenzhi somewhat deliberately bypassed Yu Kunian and sat in the row behind her. Yu Kunian turned around following her movement, raised an eyebrow with a smile, and sat down beside her.
Song Wenzhi had found time to prepare, but regarding how to actually tutor Yu Kunian, she was honestly a bit lost. However, since she had agreed so quickly, she had no chance to go back on her word.
Reflecting on her own proficiency in public speaking, it was likely developed simply from being on stage so often; she didn’t really have any special “method.” Song Wenzhi had resorted to watching some instructional videos and selected a few methods suitable for Yu Kunian to use for their sessions.
Teaching Yu Kunian face-to-face felt strangely peculiar to Song Wenzhi. It wasn’t that she hadn’t worked as a private tutor before, but when the subject was Yu Kunian, everything seemed to become unfamiliar and bizarre.
She was uncharacteristically nervous, especially when the Alpha’s scent repeatedly brushed past her ears; she would subconsciously turn her gaze toward the person beside her. Yu Kunian looked serious, her eyes fixed on the lesson plan Song Wenzhi had prepared. Her meticulous expression made one involuntarily imagine the steady, calm President Yu in the midst of a busy workday.
A slight itch stirred in her heart. Song Wenzhi’s fingertips, holding the notebook paper, curled slightly. She lowered her eyes again and cleared her throat. “President Yu, do you still remember the content of yesterday’s speech?”
Yu Kunian recalled carefully. “I remember a portion of it, roughly.”
Song Wenzhi nodded. Remembering that she had saved the speech draft herself, she felt a momentary flash of worry that Yu Kunian might notice. After a hint of guilt flickered in her eyes, she put down her pen and met Yu Kunian’s gaze. “Then, President Yu, treat this as a second delivery. I’ll be the audience. Give me a rough run-through.”
Yu Kunian’s gaze did not waver. They maintained their distance, with only their intersecting gazes reflecting in each other’s eyes. For a subtle moment, the atmosphere shifted before the Alpha nodded solemnly. “Alright, Teacher Song.”
Yu Kunian only remembered the general outline and framework of that long speech draft. The logic was clear, but the details had become blurred. At first, she spoke fluently, but after a few minutes, she began to pause.
Song Wenzhi actually understood that speech draft even better than Yu Kunian did. Hearing Yu Kunian get stuck, she instinctively offered a reminder. In response, Yu Kunian looked momentarily surprised, followed by an abrupt silence.
It was only then that Song Wenzhi realized what she’d done. Just as she was worrying whether Yu Kunian had sensed something, she heard Yu Kunian let out an embarrassed laugh and say “Sorry.”
“What?”
“I was just distracted, Teacher.”
Yu Kunian explained sincerely, having clearly adapted to her role as a “student.” Of course, she wouldn’t admit that she had been momentarily mesmerized while staring at Song Wenzhi.
Song Wenzhi breathed a sigh of relief while looking away, saying with zero intimidation, “Pay attention in class.”
Yu Kunian chimed in with a smile, “Yes, Teacher.”
They continued from where they left off. Song Wenzhi felt that Yu Kunian’s grasp of the draft wasn’t great and decided to start there, making up for the gaps. Yu Kunian gladly accepted every arrangement Song Wenzhi made for her. Her eyes remained fixed on Song Wenzhi, her gaze filled with undisguised admiration, her smile more radiant than usual.
Unfortunately, Song Wenzhi had other plans for the afternoon. This impromptu lesson lasted only about an hour. Just as Yu Kunian was starting to feel the momentum, the alarm on Song Wenzhi’s wrist sounded, interrupting their exchange.
The Omega’s finger swiped to turn off the alarm. After closing her pen, she said to Yu Kunian, “President Yu, there’s a meeting at the faculty. Let’s continue this evening.”
Yu Kunian nodded. “I won’t take up any more of your time, Teacher Song. However, I noticed you don’t have anything scheduled for dinner. I wonder if I might have the honor of dining with you?”
Song Wenzhi pondered for a moment. With the new semester just starting, there were many things to handle at the college. Most of them didn’t have fixed time slots, so she couldn’t be sure if she would be free at dinnertime. Thinking it better not to leave Yu Kunian waiting for an uncertain window of time, she spoke up:
“There’s a possibility of other things coming up. You don’t need to wait for me, President Yu.”
“Then there is still a chance.” Yu Kunian didn’t think waiting was a bad thing. “I’ll wait for your message; I can come over anytime. If there’s a sudden change in plans, just send me a message, Teacher Song. It’s no problem—your matters come first.”
Seeing that Yu Kunian seemed very persistent, Song Wenzhi agreed. If nothing else occupied her dinner time, she would eat with her.
Yu Kunian took the “lesson notebook” used for the tutoring, and they left the classroom together. The Omega left in a hurry, and the Alpha watched her retreating back for a long time. Even after the figure disappeared, the smile in Yu Kunian’s eyes remained.
Song Wenzhi was skilled at writing beautiful cursive. Entering the elevator, Yu Kunian flipped open the notebook. The content inside was very detailed; it was clear Song Wenzhi had prepared thoroughly. Yu Kunian’s gaze swept over the pages, a hint of softness flashing in her eyes.
It wasn’t until nearly seven o’clock that Song Wenzhi’s duties finally ended. She found a moment to check her phone. Ten minutes ago, Yu Kunian had asked if she had brought an umbrella, as a heavy rain had started outside. She stood up, pushed open the meeting room door, and looked out the hallway window. Water droplets blurred the glass, and she could faintly see puddles forming on the ground. Song Wenzhi frowned, feeling a sudden sense of distress.
She hadn’t brought an umbrella, and looking at the downpour, it didn’t seem like it would stop anytime soon.
So, Song Wenzhi lowered her head to reply to Yu Kunian. She had only just sent the words “President Yu, you don’t need to wait for me anymore” when she received a quick reply: Which building?
Song Wenzhi stared at the message in surprise for a long time without replying. Only when the screen went dark did she snap back to reality. Her gaze fell on the rain lashing against the window. She then politely informed Yu Kunian that she was in no hurry to leave and that she didn’t need to come pick her up.
But Yu Kunian’s phone call rang shortly after. Song Wenzhi’s fingers paused. She listened to the ringtone for several seconds before answering. “President Yu—”
“It’s fine, I’m already on campus.” The sound of the rain on Yu Kunian’s end was even clearer than her own. For a moment, it made Yu Kunian’s voice sound slightly distorted, yet it added a touch of magnetic depth that caused Song Wenzhi to falter.
After a moment, Song Wenzhi’s voice drifted softly into the receiver: “Mingjing Building.”
Yu Kunian replied, “Okay, wait for me a bit.”
After hanging up, several colleagues who had also been in the meeting walked to the window. Looking at the torrential rain outside, they sighed in frustration, grumbling about not having umbrellas. They decided to rest on a different floor for a while and asked Song Wenzhi if she wanted to join them.
Song Wenzhi was still gripping her phone. She looked at them and said, “No thanks, I…” She paused, as if unsure of how to phrase it. But after a moment’s thought, her heart gave a sudden leap, and she heard herself say: “Someone is coming to get me.”
Since Song Wenzhi usually kept to herself at the college, the others’ first reaction was to ask with an air of understanding, “Ah… is Miss Xia back?”
But they heard Song Wenzhi’s denial: “No.” She didn’t continue to explain who it was, only adding faintly, “It’s someone else.”
She didn’t know how to describe what Yu Kunian was to her. Compared to the well-known Xia Weichi, Yu Kunian’s name had only appeared alongside hers during the opening lecture. The relationship between them felt somewhat abrupt.
The others wanted to press further, but the sound of Song Wenzhi’s message alert interrupted their conversation. Song Wenzhi checked her phone. In her chat with Yu Kunian, a new message had arrived: Come downstairs.
Song Wenzhi didn’t intend to reveal anything more to them. After saying “I’ll be going first,” she immediately entered the elevator. Her footsteps seemed somewhat urgent, though the others couldn’t see clearly.
The elevator reached the first floor. Song Wenzhi walked to the entrance and looked out, searching for Yu Kunian. She didn’t realize how unusual she was acting, but the moment she saw Yu Kunian walking toward her, her heart felt as if it had skipped a beat.
Yu Kunian was wearing a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up. She was holding a coat in her hand. The howling wind outside whipped the falling raindrops, dampening the ends of her hair. Stray strands were blown messy across Yu Kunian’s brow, and then a pair of fairs, slender hands tucked those dark locks behind her ear.
Stopping beside Song Wenzhi, Yu Kunian draped the prepared coat over her shoulders, saying, “The wind is very strong; you’ll catch a cold.”
Song Wenzhi looked down at her movements, her breathing gradually leveling out. She asked in a low voice, “Why did you come?”
Yu Kunian said, “I guessed you didn’t have an umbrella, Teacher Song.”
Song Wenzhi asked, “And if I had?”
At that, Yu Kunian gave a soft laugh and said gently, “Then wouldn’t that have been for the best?”
Realizing her question was essentially meaningless and perhaps a bit childish, Song Wenzhi couldn’t help but feel her ears redden. After a long silence, she said, “I’m actually fine.”
“It’s going to rain for a few more hours,” Yu Kunian explained. “If you wait for the rain to stop, you’ll be very hungry by tonight.”
Song Wenzhi finally raised her head, her brow slightly furrowed as she met her gaze. “So, you’re here to take me to dinner?”
Yu Kunian couldn’t help but laugh, but she didn’t immediately deny it. Instead, she asked back, “If I said yes, would you agree, Teacher Song?” In such a heavy storm, there was no need for them to eat today; they could easily pick a day with better weather.
“President Yu, I—”
“Teacher Song, you have the right to refuse me.”
Song Wenzhi had already secretly convinced herself and decided to go out to eat with Yu Kunian. But before she could finish her sentence, Yu Kunian leaned slightly toward her and said those words.
Song Wenzhi was stunned at first, then said in confusion, “Do you want me to refuse?”
“Yes.” Yu Kunian nodded quite unexpectedly. “I hope you can refuse me.”
“Why?”
“You’re very tired today, Teacher Song.” Yu Kunian looked at her with a beaming smile, her eyes curving slightly at the corners. After a pause, she added, “Aren’t you?”
Song Wenzhi didn’t answer for a long time. Or rather, she didn’t know what to say. When she met Yu Kunian’s sincere and serious eyes, her fatigue seemed to be magnified. In that instant, Song Wenzhi realized that after being busy all day, she was indeed very tired.
Extra socializing and tutoring were indeed a form of invisible pressure for her. Occasionally, she wouldn’t even have time to catch her breath, but she had spent most of her past days living like this—until today, when things suddenly felt a little different.
“Whatever arrangement I propose, you don’t have to agree. Everything is centered on you—whether you’re tired or simply don’t want to, I accept it.” Yu Kunian spoke solemnly. She wanted Song Wenzhi to consider her own emotions first when facing anything. “I don’t want to be a burden to you because of myself. Even a single second of exhaustion would be my failure. You can blame me.”
Her voice was very soft. Her tone wasn’t one of lecturing, but rather a request made from a slightly lowered posture. Song Wenzhi fell into Yu Kunian’s eyes, where her own reflection was mirrored in those flawless amber pupils.
“President Yu, the arrangement to tutor you is established. In a company, a project that has already started won’t be stopped at will.” Song Wenzhi still wanted to persist; after all, Yu Kunian was her employer.
Hearing this, Yu Kunian suppressed the curve of her lips and feigned distress. “Do you really think I’m an inhumane Alpha who would exploit an Omega, Teacher Song?”
