The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 6
“I only want to invite you.”
Song Wenzhi’s footsteps paused. After a moment, she spoke:
“The faculty apartments at the university.”
Lihua University did indeed provide several apartment buildings for professors who were not locals of Lihua City. The rent was much cheaper than off-campus housing, and every teacher had a single room. Aside from being a bit small and the spots being hard to come by, there were no other obvious downsides.
Yu Kunian smiled. “What a coincidence. It’s right on my way.”
Song Wenzhi couldn’t tell if she was being truthful or not. She simply listened as Yu Kunian told her to wait there for a moment before turning back toward the parking garage to bring her car up.
Watching Song Wenzhi sit in the passenger seat once again, Yu Kunian was in high spirits. Her smile was quite pronounced, though Song Wenzhi did not see it.
The restaurant was about a twenty-minute drive from Lihua University. Yu Kunian deliberately slowed her driving pace. Song Wenzhi had rolled down the window, her gaze fixed outside the entire time, lost in thought.
Under the streetlights lining the greenery, her cheeks alternated between shadow and light. Her soft hair was gently lifted by the breeze, and her cherry-red lips were pressed together; she looked as if she were shrouded in moonlight.
Having found a moment during a red light to look at Song Wenzhi, Yu Kunian was stunned for a split second.
—She is breathtakingly beautiful.
That was the only thought that surfaced in her mind.
Without her untouchable persona on stage or her aloofness off stage, she was now simply letting down her guard a fraction, dazed in an imperceptible laziness. She had become a Song Wenzhi who made her heart pound incessantly.
For the first time, Yu Kunian realized that such an Omega existed in this world. However, the changing traffic light did not grant her more time to admire the view. The vehicles behind them began to urge her on, and Yu Kunian turned her head back.
Song Wenzhi also looked at her, her face filled with doubt, though she did not ask anything out loud.
Yu Kunian cleared her throat, covering her lapse. “Was Professor Song satisfied with dinner today?”
Song Wenzhi gave a soft “Mm.” “Thank you for the hospitality, President Yu. I enjoyed it very much.”
“I hope Professor Song can give me more opportunities to eat together in the future.” Yu Kunian thought of a few other restaurants that Song Wenzhi might like. “I only want to invite you.”
Song Wenzhi’s gaze flickered for a few inches, but she still promised to her: “Okay.”
Not long after they finished speaking, they arrived at the East Gate of Lihua University, which was close to the faculty apartments. At this hour, the school no longer allowed stranger vehicles to enter. Yu Kunian simply found a place to park the car and said to Song Wenzhi, “I’ll walk you to your building.”
Song Wenzhi was about to say it wasn’t necessary, but Yu Kunian had already pushed open the car door. Her outstretched hand paused, and the words remained unsaid.
The two of them got out of the car together. Song Wenzhi stood still in front of the car, only realizing after a moment that Yu Kunian was holding an exquisite navy-blue gift bag.
Before Song Wenzhi could ask, Yu Kunian had already handed the item over. “This is a meeting gift I prepared for Professor Song.”
Song Wenzhi looked surprised; she hadn’t expected Yu Kunian to give her a gift. Although she didn’t know what it was, she still waved her hand and said, “President Yu, this isn’t appropriate.”
Yu Kunian seemed to have anticipated this. “It’s just a small meeting gift. Professor Song needn’t feel burdened.”
“President Yu, one shouldn’t receive rewards without merit.” Song Wenzhi shook her head. Moreover, Yu Kunian had essentially helped her with the lecture today, so she had even less reason to accept a gift.
Yu Kunian withdrew her hand without further persuasion, simply offering an acknowledgment. Then, as they entered the campus together, she said unhurriedly, “Professor Song, I do actually have a small request.”
Song Wenzhi looked at her. “Please, go ahead, President Yu.”
“Regarding the investment fair in a month, I really haven’t prepared well for it.” Yu Kunian brought up the matter they had discussed during dinner. “I wasn’t lying; I’m not good at these kinds of speeches or interview-style programs. So, with Professor Song’s help today, I was surprised that it turned out so well.”
Upon hearing this, Song Wenzhi didn’t seem surprised. After all, she didn’t just follow Zhaoming Biotech; she followed everything about Yu Kunian. The media only claimed externally that it was “inconvenient” for Yu Kunian to accept interviews, and it was only natural that Director Qin and the others didn’t know the truth. However, through the few existing interview videos of Yu Kunian, Song Wenzhi was intimately familiar with her.
Meeting Yu Kunian’s gaze, Song Wenzhi nodded. “What would President Yu like me to do?”
Yu Kunian was somewhat surprised. She thought Song Wenzhi would hesitate and consider it, but this was obviously for the best. “I would like to ask Professor Song to be my temporary coach, to ensure I don’t make any mistakes at the investment fare in a month. You can name your own rewards, salary, and requirements.”
“President Yu can just treat me as a part-time tutor and pay the standard tutoring fee,” Song Wenzhi said.
In truth, Yu Kunian had originally intended to let someone else represent her at the investment fair, but she had taken it back upon herself now—merely as an excuse to have more contact with Song Wenzhi. Yet, it surprised Yu Kunian that she didn’t even need the backup requests she had prepared; Song Wenzhi had agreed so easily without even asking many questions. It was completely different from the rumors on campus.
Yu Kunian understood Song Wenzhi’s intent, so she didn’t insist on offering a lavish salary. She was, however, afraid that Song Wenzhi might regret it, so she added: “Professor Song, please send me your class schedule. I’ll arrange for us to have the coaching when we are both free.”
Song Wenzhi: “I’ll send it to President Yu later tonight after I get back.”
The East Gate was not far from the faculty apartments. Within those few sentences, they had already reached the apartment building. Beside them, the incandescent streetlights stretched their shadows long. Yu Kunian stopped her pace and glanced at the apartment in front of them.
The apartment building looked like it had some years on it—very old. The cement road at the entrance seemed newly paved but was still bumpy and uneven. Yu Kunian slowly retracted her gaze, her smile undiminished as she opened the gift bag and took out a small square box.
“Since Professor Song is willing to help me, you should at least accept this thank-you gift, right?”
Perhaps realizing that Song Wenzhi was worried that the gift was too expensive, Yu Kunian casually opened the box and pulled out a silk scarf, placing it on her palm for Song Wenzhi to see.
Despite the dim lighting, Song Wenzhi could tell immediately that the scarf was beautiful. Its color was like shimmering white pearls dropping into a sea of cyan; the two colors blended yet remained distinct, as beautiful as a mermaid’s tail.
“It suits you very much.” Yu Kunian stepped closer, holding the scarf up against her neck, and spoke softly.
Song Wenzhi looked down following Yu Kunian’s movement. The silk scarf was unexpectedly a perfect match for the clothes she was wearing today. Her neck was bare—she usually didn’t wear necklaces—and the scarf in Yu Kunian’s hand seemed to fill that void.
Song Wenzhi suddenly didn’t know how to refuse this so-called “thank-you gift.”
In her silence, Yu Kunian slowly looped the silk scarf around her snowy-white neck, her slender fingers beginning to tie it in a slow and deliberate manner.
The distance between them was very close—so close that Yu Kunian’s breath brushed past Song Wenzhi’s ear, throwing her heartbeat into disarray. Even when Yu Kunian’s soft fingertips grazed her skin, Song Wenzhi felt the touched area suddenly become as hot as fire.
She kept her eyes downcast. Just a fraction closer and she could see the collarbone hidden beneath Yu Kunian’s wavy hair. For some reason, Song Wenzhi held her breath for a moment, unable to control its erratic rhythm.
It wasn’t until the scarf was tied and Yu Kunian pulled back to a distance again that Song Wenzhi raised her eyes. She heard Yu Kunian say: “It matches you perfectly. Professor Song, don’t refuse me, and don’t refuse it.”
Song Wenzhi snapped back to her senses, reaching up to touch the silk scarf.
The night wind should have been cold, but beneath her seemingly calm expression, her cheeks were so burning hot that even the wind couldn’t cool them. Yu Kunian didn’t seem to notice; after all, she appeared perfectly normal now.
Ultimately, Song Wenzhi couldn’t refuse. Under Yu Kunian’s gaze, she nodded in acceptance. Then, she said goodbye to Yu Kunian and turned to enter the apartment.
Yu Kunian stood in place, watching her figure disappear into the elevator before leaving. The empty box and high-end gift bag were casually tossed into a trash can she passed on her way out.
Just as she exited the school gate, Yu Kunian’s phone rang. The caller ID showed Jiang Qiu.
Yu Kunian walked slowly toward where her car was parked while picking up the phone: “Yeah, it’s over… Of course I gave him the gift. I tied it on her myself—she refused at first, but I found an excuse… I’ll tell you at your shop later.”
The call ended after a few sentences. Yu Kunian started the car, her gaze lingering one last time in the direction of that apartment building.
That gift was still around Song Wenzhi’s neck, unremoved. Even though she had returned home and taken off her coat, she stood before the only full-length mirror in the house, staring repeatedly at her neck.
The texture of the silk was excellent; Song Wenzhi liked this gift.
She took out her phone and snapped a photo of her reflection. As she looked down at it, the corner of her lips tilted up in an imperceptible half-smile. When she finally took it off, she felt that this gift needed to be cherished properly, so she specifically found an empty gift box to store it in.
Suddenly, her phone vibrated. There was a new friend request from a mobile number.
The only private number she had given out today.
Inside the request message box lay a single sentence: I am Yu Kunian.
Song Wenzhi’s finger slid across the screen, clicking on Yu Kunian’s profile picture. It was a photo of her, though she didn’t know who had taken it. Yu Kunian’s smile was shallow but extremely relaxed, her wind-blown hair frozen in time, with a gentleness in her eyes that could easily make an Omega obsessed.
It was a different Yu Kunian.
Song Wenzhi quickly accepted the friend request, but she hesitated for a long time when typing the first message. She wanted to say thank you, but she was afraid Yu Kunian would think she was being too formal. Consequently, those two words were typed and deleted repeatedly, never sent.
Yu Kunian was likely to drive and didn’t message her immediately. For the first time in her life, Song Wenzhi felt a bit lost. She even scrolled through her chat history with others who had added her, trying to find a sentence to use as a reference.
Unfortunately, she felt nothing was quite right. She sat back on the sofa and racked her brain for a long while before remembering that Yu Kunian had just asked for her class schedule. She got up to get her laptop, took a screenshot, and sent it over.
She attached a message that appeared devoid of emotional turbulence: President Yu, here is my class schedule.
After sending it, she felt she should add an emoji, but she found she didn’t have many, and none of them were suitable. Song Wenzhi immediately went to the person she chatted with most in her contact list, searched through their history to collect several emojis, and added them to her own list.
In the chat box with Yu Kunian, after a few minutes, Song Wenzhi sent a new message—
