The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 5
“Teacher Song, please give me a chance to pursue you.”
Song Minzhi was just turning off the introduction playing on the screen when she heard Yu Kunian’s footsteps approaching. Her movements paused, and she looked up at Yu Kunian, saying, “President Yu, aren’t you leaving?”
“Director Qin said everyone should have a meal together.” Yu Kunian nodded. “I’ll wait for you. I drove.”
Hearing this, Song Minzhi took out her phone and saw the message Director Qin had sent to her. Yu Kunian didn’t know what else Director Qin had written; she had thought she might need to say a few more words to convince Song Minzhi to join the dinner, as the other woman didn’t seem particularly fond of handling large social gatherings. To her surprise, Song Minzhi agreed quickly, saying to her, “One moment.”
“No rush, take your time, Teacher Song.” Watching Song Minzhi speed up her packing, the smile in Yu Kunian’s eyes deepened. Subconsciously, she stepped closer to help.
Whether it was intentional or accidental, Yu Kunian and Song Minzhi happened to grasp the computer bag on the table at the same time. Their fingertips brushed against each other. Immediately, Song Minzhi let go, lifting her gaze to meet Yu Kunian’s smiling face.
She heard Yu Kunian say, “Let me.”
Song Minzhi’s heart skipped a violent beat. Just like that day in the piano room, she averted her eyes as if escaping, not even thinking of refusing before letting out a soft “Mm.”
There wasn’t much left to pack. Song Minzhi couldn’t delay any further and soon stood still in front of Yu Kunian, saying, “All done.”
Yu Kunian unexpectedly caught a hint of flustered tension in her gaze. The Teacher Song who had been so poised and composed on stage just moments ago, now seemed to have “crashed” in front of Yu Kunian.
Finding this discovery quite interesting, Yu Kunian couldn’t help but chuckle softly while nodding.
Song Minzhi tilted her head to look at her, intending to ask something but ultimately remaining silent. Just as they were about to leave the lecture hall, Yu Kunian suddenly stopped in her tracks. “Teacher Song.”
Song Minzhi stopped as well and saw Yu Kunian’s expression turn serious. Her gaze was fixed intently on her, and the atmosphere suddenly became tense.
There was no one else left in the lecture hall. All the indoor lights had been turned off, leaving the room quite dark. Only the two of them stood at the doorway, blocking the light coming in from outside.
Half of Song Minzhi’s face was shrouded in shadow, making her expression difficult to read. Yu Kunian stood facing her, her soft, black curly hair lightly brushed by the breeze. Her eyes flickered slightly, as if she were imprinting the image of the woman before her.
Yu Kunian leaned her upper body slightly forward, her presence descending upon her. Song Minzhi felt a momentary daze; as she stood there feeling Yu Kunian’s approach, she didn’t feel the slightest bit of discomfort. On the contrary, Song Minzhi felt a faint impulse to move even closer, though she quickly suppressed it.
“Teacher Song, please give me a chance to pursue you.” The words Yu Kunian spoke sounded as if they had been rehearsed a thousand times. She looked sincerely into Song Minzhi’s eyes, waiting for an answer.
She was very earnestly asking for Song Minzhi’s opinion, unlike those previous pursuers who would chase her relentlessly without even a few exchanges. Song Minzhi admitted that for a split second, she nearly lost herself in Yu Kunian’s eyes. Hearing this simple and sincere request, her heart throbbed wildly.
Song Minzhi had heard many pursuits and confessions; whether they were passionate or subtle, she was used to them and usually felt no ripple of emotion. But now, with just this one inquiry, Song Minzhi’s breath hitched, and she lost her composure in a way she never had before.
Last time in the piano room, she had run away out of nervousness. This time, Yu Kunian wasn’t going to let her run again.
Having not received an answer for a long time, Yu Kunian remained patient. Her gaze slowly wandered over Song Minzhi’s face, as if trying to discern her reaction.
A second later, Song Minzhi lowered her eyes, her fingertips curling into her palm before she asked in a soft voice, “If I don’t agree, will President Yu give up immediately?”
“No.” Yu Kunian laughed. “It’s just that before I start pursuing you, I wanted Teacher Song to be prepared.”
Song Minzhi couldn’t help but be curious: “Prepared for what?”
Yu Kunian: “Prepared to see me every day.”
Song Minzhi heard the “thump-thump” of her own heartbeat again. She thought she wouldn’t like such a thing, but when the person was Yu Kunian, she suddenly realized that it didn’t seem to be the case.
Meeting Yu Kunian’s gaze, Song Minzhi followed that line of thought: Did she want to see Yu Kunian every day?
A little bit.
Song Minzhi was startled by her own answer, but her face remained calm. The next words she spoke were like the surface of a lake without a ripple, as if the matter had nothing to do with her:
“Then do as you wish, President Yu.”
The more nervous Song Minzhi became, the more calmly she tended to speak.
Yu Kunian didn’t find this response cold; on the contrary, she was very happy. At least Song Minzhi was willing to give her a chance. She nodded slightly and said, “Today is the first day of my pursuit of you.”
When she sat in Yu Kunian’s passenger seat, Song Minzhi was still a bit dazed. After all, she hadn’t expected any of this today. She had thought Yu Kunian’s attendance at the lecture was already a great gesture of respect, but who would have thought Yu Kunian came specifically for her?
“Why did the Director suddenly arrange a meal?” Perhaps because the atmosphere in the car was a bit too quiet, Song Minzhi finally moved her gaze away from the somewhat dull scenery outside the window. She turned her head to look forward, but her peripheral vision kept observing Yu Kunian.
Yu Kunian answered truthfully, “Director Qin wanted to introduce us formally. Though it seems it wasn’t just for you.”
Song Minzhi didn’t quite understand what those words meant at first, but once they arrived at the restaurant and she saw several of her Omega and Beta colleagues, she realized Director Qin wanted to take the opportunity to let the teachers from their college build a good relationship with Yu Kunian.
Yu Kunian seemed accustomed to such scenes. She led Song Minzhi a little late, a polite smile on her face as she said, “Apologies for the wait.”
Several people stood up at once. Director Qin shook her head and said, “You’ve arrived just in time. We were just saying we didn’t know your dietary preferences and were struggling with what to order.”
While pulling out a chair at an empty spot for Song Minzhi to sit first, Yu Kunian waved her hand and said, “I have no dietary restrictions; just order according to everyone’s preferences.”
Having said that, she leaned down slightly toward Song Minzhi and asked softly, “What would you like to drink?”
Director Qin happened to be talking about ordering a bottle of red wine. Song Minzhi’s gaze lingered on Yu Kunian’s cheek. Her voice was as clear as a thermal spring and even more refreshing: “I can have red wine.”
Yu Kunian nodded, then stood up. “I’ll have a glass of Icy Night Grape juice; I’m driving. Is everyone having red wine? I’ve been to this restaurant a few times and have a few bottles stored here. Wait a moment, I’ll have them brought over and opened.”
Director Qin responded, her eyes full of smiles as she looked at her. “President Yu, you are too kind.”
Yu Kunian handled this kind of occasion with ease. Her expression was flawless, and she returned a polite smile, saying:
“I am honored to have this meal with you all. Although Director Qin organized the gathering, it’s only right that I hosted. After all, this is our first meeting. You are all famous professors at Lihua University, and today’s lecture was helpful to me, so I can only express my gratitude this way.”
Yu Kunian was so polite that it was impossible to refuse. Director Qin felt she was being far too formal and waved her hand somewhat sheepishly, saying, “President Yu, your company’s business is flourishing. Today was just a lecture; how could it possibly help you?”
“To be honest, Director Qin,” Yu Kunian answered unhurriedly, “In a month, our company has an investment fair, which is essentially a series of presentations. I personally am not good at those occasions, but seeing Teacher Song on stage today, it was like seeing a savior.”
Her words had a touch of playful exaggeration, causing several people to look toward the somewhat surprised Song Minzhi. Director Qin didn’t think there was anything wrong with the lecture; if the investment fair went as well as today’s performance, there shouldn’t be any issues.
However, if Song Minzhi could help Yu Kunian, it would be a good thing. Director Qin stood up and walked to Song Minzhi’s side. “I haven’t officially introduced the other teachers to President Yu yet.”
Song Minzhi was not only the most capable pillar of the Alpha-Omega College but also the youngest Omega professor in the entire college. Outsiders often heard stories about Song Minzhi, but most felt she was difficult to approach and cold in nature. In reality—
Song Minzhi was both reliable and warm-hearted; she was simply not good at expressing herself. Not just Director Qin, but the other teachers also liked Song Minzhi very much, and they often gathered together.
Director Qin introduced the other teachers present to Yu Kunian one by one. After they had all become acquainted, the red wine was served first. Yu Kunian specifically asked Song Minzhi, “How is your alcohol tolerance? I wouldn’t suggest getting drunk tonight.”
Song Minzhi: “It’s alright.”
Song Minzhi didn’t drink often, but her tolerance was actually quite good; she rarely got drunk. Yu Kunian took her grape juice and lightly clinked her glass against Song Minzhi’s. The crisp sound of the glasses colliding rang out along with Yu Kunian’s voice, which carried a hint of a smile:
“Teacher Song, try it and see.”
Song Minzhi didn’t know much about red wine, and she probably couldn’t distinguish its quality, as she had only drunk it a handful of times before. Thus, after taking a sip under Yu Kunian’s watchful gaze, she asked, “Is there… a story behind this wine?”
Yu Kunian shook her head and pulled their chairs, which were slightly apart, closer together. She leaned in, cradling the bottom of the wine glass with her hand, her eyes curving upward with a smile as she said, “If you like it, then it is a good wine. If you don’t like it, how about a glass of Icy Night Grape juice instead?”
Song Minzhi took another sip.
“It’s good,” she said, but her gaze instinctively shifted away as she placed the glass back on the table.
Just then, the dishes began to arrive one after another. Song Minzhi quietly breathed a sigh of relief, easing her sudden distraction for fear that Yu Kunian would notice her abnormality.
Since this meal was meant for them to make friends, Yu Kunian couldn’t ignore the others. Consequently, throughout the entire dinner, she never stopped talking.
However, her gaze remained constantly attentive to Song Minzhi’s eating habits.
For example, she didn’t like the shrimp salad, but she particularly liked the fried shrimp. She didn’t eat mushrooms at all, but she was very satisfied with the braised fish…
Yu Kunian committed Song Minzhi’s tastes to memory one by one, all while keeping Director Qin laughing so much, she couldn’t stop praising her. No one got drunk during the meal, but everyone was very happy.
The lecture had ended near six in the evening, and the meal had lasted quite a while. Though most of the time was spent talking, they had certainly eaten well. By the time the dinner concluded, the sky outside had darkened. Yu Kunian settled the bill, and the group finally left.
On the way to the parking lot, Director Qin and the others said the subway would be more convenient, so they headed to the nearest station. Eventually, only Yu Kunian and Song Minzhi were left traveling the same way, and Yu Kunian naturally prepared to drive Song Minzhi home.
“Teacher Song, where do you live?” Yu Kunian looked at Song Minzhi beside her, whose face was slightly flushed—perhaps from the effect of the alcohol. “Maybe I’m heading the same way.”
