The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 30
“Yu Kunian, I’ve come to find you.”
Yu Kunian certainly knew what Yu Dai was referring to; it was nothing more than the report she had filed with the Supervisory Committee.
From the moment she decided to report the matter, she knew that Yu Dai, who sat on the committee, would eventually find out. She had anticipated today’s situation and had long guessed that Yu Dai would be furious.
But Yu Dai’s anger meant that Yu Kunian had won.
Yu Kunian had always been struggling against Yu Dai and Yang Jin. In many instances, she was forced to follow Yu Dai’s wishes, whether during her school years or in her professional career.
On the surface, it seemed as though Yu Kunian was always acting against Yu Dai’s arrangements, but Yu Kunian knew very well that she had never truly escaped Yu Dai’s surveillance. In Yu Dai’s eyes, all of her defiance was merely a minor interlude that remained within the scope of her control.
Otherwise, Yu Kunian would have left Lihua City long ago.
The scattered pages of the inspection report lay on the floor. Yu Kunian stepped onto them, a hint of a smile even surfacing in her eyes. “There’s nothing I won’t admit to. But, Mother, do you really think I did something wrong?”
Yu Dai looked at Yu Kunian, her expression icy. At that moment, the Alpha’s dominance became even more oppressive. “What exactly did you do right?”
“Mother, you don’t understand business matters, so you didn’t realize this was a trap.” Yu Kunian took a step closer, her expression unchanged. “That family has ulterior motives, yet Mother failed to see it.”
“Are you saying… I am wrong?” Yu Dai furrowed her brows, her gaze sweeping over Yu Kunian’s face like a blade, her eyes dark and cold.
Yu Kunian countered, “Is it not so? Did Mother investigate them? Do you know their company’s current profitability? And their character—can Mother guarantee it?”
In the business world, the surface is always just the surface. Every enterprise presents only a facade of false prosperity to the outside world. To an outsider, the other party’s company might look like an immovable giant tree, but in reality, it was already teetering. If Yu Kunian wasn’t careful, she would be swallowed whole.
“Yu Kunian!” Yu Dai’s patience was nearly exhausted. “I did everything for your own good, yet you say I am wrong? Your own company’s management is a cause for concern. If it weren’t because you are so difficult to deal with, why would I need to personally select an Omega for you to marry?”
“Mother speaks so grandly, yet you never considered that if I truly followed your wishes, I would be walking straight toward a dead end.” Yu Kunian found it laughable. Her reasoned arguments were dismissed as mere stubbornness. Just like countless times before, it was exhausting; the argument had lost its meaning.
Yang Jin hurried forward to stop her. “Niannian, that’s going too far.”
Yu Kunian’s expression remained unchanged, her lips curling into an unattractive arc. Her gaze swept over Yang Jin and then flickered toward Yu Dai. Bitterness welled up in her heart, yet she still held onto a shred of hope as she explained, “They want to annex Zhaoming Biotech; they want to suck the blood of the Yu family. Did I really say it too harshly?”
She was met with a heavy silence. Yang Jin gripped her arm, frowning and shaking her head, signaling for her not to speak further. In every argument, Yu Kunian was the one who had to bow her head. She could not deny Yu Dai’s “good intentions,” nor could she defy Yang Jin’s “painstaking efforts.” This time, Yu Kunian’s breath trembled slightly. A sense of powerlessness washed over her. The Alpha tightened her lips, looking at these two people who always felt like strangers.
“Mom, I don’t need your arrangements, and I certainly don’t need your hypocritical concern for me. I don’t want to be ruined while being kept in the dark. Zhaoming Biotech is my life’s work. You don’t have to value it, but please, do not cause trouble.” Yu Kunian’s voice was very soft. She pushed Yang Jin’s hand away, her tone indifferent.
Fury brewed in Yu Dai’s eyes. She stepped toward Yu Kunian, speaking with the last of her calm: “So we are hindering you? Our good intentions have become your stumbling block?”
“Yes,” Yu Kunian faced Yu Dai’s gaze without fear. “A stumbling block. I don’t need anyone pointing fingers at my company, and I loathe your interference in my affairs. Whatever happens to me has nothing to do with you.”
Yu Dai’s face turned extremely grim. The atmosphere in the house dropped to freezing point. The sharpness in Yu Dai’s eyes fell upon Yu Kunian, and she suddenly released her oppressive pheromones.
“Yu Kunian, you are my daughter.” Yu Dai watched Yu Kunian frown and increased the concentration of the pheromones. She remained high and mighty. “Your affairs should be guided by us, rather than you standing there so arrogantly snapping at me. It seems you’ve forgotten—Zhaoming Biotech does not belong to you alone.”
Yu Dai’s pheromones were inherently more dominant than Yu Kunian’s. Consequently, Yu Kunian’s face quickly turned pale. Her fingertips began to tremble, yet she forced herself to stand tall just to avoid softening in front of Yu Dai.
In the next moment, caught off guard, Yu Dai raised her hand and swung it toward Yu Kunian.
Slap!
The blow forced Yu Kunian’s head to the side. She staggered a few steps but instinctively gritted her teeth. The metallic taste of blood spread through her mouth. Her cheek burned, and a red welt quickly rose to the surface.
Startled, Yang Jin reached out to support Yu Kunian and said to Yu Dai, “If you want to criticize her, criticize her. Why did you hit the child?”
Yu Dai snorted coldly and withdrew her pheromones. “Listen to the things she’s saying!”
Yu Kunian pulled her hand away from Yang Jin. She raised her hand to touch her face; the scalding temperature caused her to let out a self-mocking laugh. The sorrow rising in her heart even surpassed the pain on her face. “You will never believe that you are wrong.”
As Yang Jin turned to get medicine, Yu Kunian lowered her eyes. Her nose felt itchy with unshed tears, and her vision blurred behind a layer of mist. Her voice was inevitably raspy: “Mother, have you ever truly considered what kind of life I want to lead?”
Yu Dai was dictatorial and controlling. Over the years, Yu Kunian’s life had been one of constant suffocation, discomfort, and a complete lack of freedom.
Yu Kunian didn’t know if Yu Dai truly loved her child, or why she made her feel such utter loathing even at the thought of coming home.
“When have I not considered things for your sake?” Yu Dai’s tone was no longer as harsh. Perhaps she had acted too impulsively just now; she had come to her senses, and a trace of heartache flickered in her eyes, though she didn’t speak it. “Yu Kunian, can’t you just be obedient?”
“Why must I always follow your wishes? This is my own life.” Yang Jin came out carrying the medical kit, but Yu Kunian took a step back. She paused, then added, “Stop trying to control me. Otherwise, you might as well just take over Zhaoming Biotech yourselves.”
As she was leaving the house, Yu Dai called out to her again, her tone poor, but the words that followed were drowned out by the forceful slam of Yu Kunian’s door. Yu Kunian stood in the hallway, her face full of exhaustion. She didn’t expect Yu Dai and Yang Jin to change overnight, but she hoped that, at least for a short while, they would stop meddling in her business.
Rain hammered against the car window. Yu Kunian gripped the steering wheel tightly, Yu Dai’s words echoing repeatedly in her mind.
It wasn’t the first time she had heard them. Most of their past arguments were like this—Yu Dai and Yang Jin would only blame her for not being “obedient.” Every time she left that house, Yu Kunian’s mood would be foul. Over time, the Alpha no longer wanted to return.
Sometimes, she just wanted to hear a single “I’m sorry.”
Returning to her own home, Yu Kunian didn’t even turn on the lights. She walked to the open terrace, wiped the rainwater off a lounge chair, and sat down silently, staring into the distance with a grim expression.
She cast her gaze aimlessly ahead, occasionally looking up at the sky, letting the icy rain driven by the wind hit her body and fall upon her still-burning, reddened cheek.
She wanted to escape the shackles; she wanted to break free from the control.
The Alpha’s somber emotions wrapped around her. She let out a soft sigh and raised a hand to her forehead. Despite knowing things would turn out this way today, she couldn’t help but be affected. At times like this, Yu Kunian only dared to be alone; otherwise, she would be unable to stop herself from projecting her emotions onto others.
A night of quiet reflection was something Yu Kunian did often.
The terrace here was a perfect place for her to calm down. The Alpha spent the entire night digesting her emotions. Regardless of how bad the weather was, she would still choose to do this.
The sudden torrential rain lasted until the early morning hours, and the air temperature in Lihua City dropped accordingly. The night wind brought an inevitable chill, but the Alpha seemed oblivious, her fingertips unusually cold.
Yu Kunian considered herself to be in fairly good health, but perhaps due to recent excessive worries coupled with the pressure of the investment fair, she began to run a fever the next morning after being exposed to the cold wind all night and getting soaked by the rain.
Realizing her physical discomfort, the Alpha decided not to go to the company. After taking some simple fever reducers, she brought her laptop to the living room sofa to work. After forcing herself through the remaining half of yesterday’s meeting, Yu Kunian’s eyelids grew heavy. She hadn’t slept a wink all night, and having taken medicine, she now felt dizzy and drowsy.
But before sleeping, Yu Kunian didn’t forget to pick up her phone and send a voice message to Song Wenzhi, explaining that she hadn’t expected to suddenly fall ill and might not be able to meet for lunch.
Song Wenzhi’s call came a few minutes later. Yu Kunian answered slowly, her eyes half-closed. “Zhizhi, what is it?”
“Yu Kunian, do you have a fever?” Song Wenzhi must have just finished class; she called as soon as she saw the message. “How are you feeling now?”
Yu Kunian’s voice was raspy. She seemed to have lost her usual sharpness, her speech softened by the discomfort. “My head hurts, and I have a fever. But I’ve already taken some medicine.”
“It rained suddenly last night. Did you catch a cold?” Song Wenzhi asked with concern.
Yu Kunian nodded. “Probably.” She felt a bit guilty; she had been governed by her emotions last night, her mind unclear as she stood in the cold wind on the terrace for so long.
Song Wenzhi said, “Yu Kunian, sleep for a while. Make sure you’re covered with a blanket.”
Yu Kunian replied, “Okay. What will you do for lunch? Do you want me to order delivery for you?”
“I’ll eat with you.”
“Hmm?” Yu Kunian was slightly stunned by Song Wenzhi’s words, a bit confused.
Song Wenzhi quickly said, “Yu Kunian, send me your address. I’m coming to find you.”
