The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 23
“Why didn’t you leave last night?”
Zhaoming Bio’s original business was the development of inhibitors, so Yu Kunian believed she could absolutely not be mistaken. This kind of high-potency inhibitor had long since ceased to be sold on the market; only professional doctors could prescribe it.
A name came to Yu Kunian’s mind: “Xia Weichi?”
Song Wenzhi’s heart instantly tightened. For a moment, she had forgotten that Yu Kunian would recognize it. Especially when meeting Yu Kunian’s scrutinizing gaze, the Omega’s mind went blank, and she remained silent for a long time without speaking.
She could not let Yu Kunian detect anything unusual—this was the Omega’s only thought at this moment.
However, Song Wenzhi’s face remained calm. Her gaze merely fell upon the inhibitor in Yu Kunian’s hand. Unable to tell what Song Wenzhi was thinking, Yu Kunian could only walk back to her. She let out an imperceptible sigh: “Teacher Song, have you been deceived by someone?”
Yu Kunian could think of no other possibility. If she hadn’t been hoodwinked, why would she be using such an inhibitor?
Song Wenzhi’s heartbeat almost drowned out Yu Kunian’s voice. Her palms were already sweating. Watching Yu Kunian approach her, she feigned composure and lifted her head, speaking without a hint of nervousness: “No, this is just a very ordinary inhibitor.”
Yu Kunian met her eyes, her brow furrowing slightly. “This is clearly a high-potency inhibitor.” Could she really have been scammed?
“The person you just mentioned, Xia Weichi—she is a professional doctor. We are friends, so she researched a specific inhibitor for me with lower side effects. It isn’t some high-potency version.” Song Wenzhi lied. She had told very few lies in her life. On the surface, her face didn’t flush and her heart didn’t seem to race, but in reality, she was so guilty she didn’t dare look at Yu Kunian again.
This guilt caused her to deliberately ignore her own physical discomfort, praying only that Yu Kunian wouldn’t be overly suspicious, otherwise, she truly wouldn’t know how to keep the secret. However, Yu Kunian’s trust in Song Wenzhi clearly outweighed her professional skepticism. She didn’t feel that Song Wenzhi was lying; instead, she looked at the inhibitor a few more times and began to question her own judgment.
“But if it really isn’t the ordinary version, it will harm your body.” Yu Kunian maintained a shred of worry. She was afraid Song Wenzhi was completely defenseless against others and might be calculated against.
Song Wenzhi didn’t know how to round out the lie. After all, Yu Kunian’s research on inhibitors was far more professional than hers. The Omega was afraid that the more she said, the more mistakes she would make, and she would eventually be found out. Thus, Song Wenzhi could only reach out her hand toward Yu Kunian, appearing somewhat displeased: “President Yu.”
As soon as Yu Kunian heard this title, her heart skipped a beat. She hurried to place the inhibitor back into Song Wenzhi’s hand and lowered her head in compromise: “It’s not that I don’t believe you, Teacher Song.” Then, noticing Song Wenzhi’s tightly furrowed brows due to discomfort, she leaned in closer. “The first few minutes of the inhibitor taking effect will cause obvious stimulation to the gland. Teacher Song, my pheromones can help soothe you.”
Song Wenzhi lowered her eyes. “Mm, thank you.”
Having received permission, the gentle soothing pheromones swirled around once more. The stimulation from a high-potency inhibitor was more severe than a normal one. When the familiar throbbing pain arrived, Song Wenzhi pressed her lips thin. her face turned a few shades paler, though it was invisible in the dark.
Yu Kunian noticed Song Wenzhi’s disordered breathing. She drew closer again, her eyes reflecting a concern that was hard to ignore. She kept a constant watch on Song Wenzhi’s reaction. Under the faint moonlight, she saw the space between Song Wenzhi’s brows filled with distress.
The Alpha subconsciously raised her hand, unable to stop herself from touching the Omega’s brow with her fingertip, gently rubbing it. Yu Kunian smoothed out the furrowed brows for Song Wenzhi, and as she did, she met Song Wenzhi’s upturned gaze. The Alpha’s breath shuddered. The scent of mint brushed past the tip of her nose. They looked at each other in silence, feeling the intense comfort of the pheromones; it seemed they were both becoming a bit addicted. A few minutes later, the Omega was the first to avert her eyes. Yu Kunian heard Song Wenzhi say:
“I’m fine now. You can go back.”
Yu Kunian looked at Song Wenzhi and shook her head. “I’m not at ease. Let me stay with you a bit longer.”
Song Wenzhi did not immediately refuse. Perhaps it was because of this peculiar dark night, and the fact that the lingering pain in her gland remained; she truly did need company. So when Yu Kunian spoke those words, the Omega felt as if her thoughts had been read, and her emotions inevitably surged.
Song Wenzhi lowered her eyes to stare at the ends of Yu Kunian’s hair falling over her chest. Scenes of Yu Kunian carrying her on her back flashed through her mind, and the image of the Alpha replacing her blocking patch surfaced… The Omega realized with a start that she had tacitly accepted the reduction of distance from Yu Kunian. She had already allowed the Alpha to come a step closer.
“Yu Kunian.” Song Wenzhi lay back down. Watching Yu Kunian tuck her in, she spoke softly.
Yu Kunian responded quickly: “Mm, what is it?”
“When I fall asleep, the companionship ends.” Song Wenzhi closed her eyes. She wasn’t negotiating with Yu Kunian; she was merely notifying her.
In the darkness, she heard Yu Kunian let out a soft chuckle—a warm laugh echoing in the silent night, sounding as if it were right by her ear. The Omega’s earlobes turned inexplicably red where they couldn’t be seen. Her chest rose and fell rapidly for a moment, and then she heard Yu Kunian pull over a chair and sit by her bed.
Despite her eyes being closed, Song Wenzhi could still imagine what the Alpha beside her looked like—Yu Kunian was likely leaning against the back of the chair, her gaze fixed on her the entire time, sitting in a relaxed manner with a faint expression that couldn’t hide a smile.
The pheromones in the room gradually faded. The scent of coconut candy was almost entirely gone, but the mint still lingered heavily, making it difficult to ignore—just like the Alpha herself, whom Song Wenzhi could not deliberately overlook. Yu Kunian made no further movement. Her hand rested on her leg, her fingertips soundlessly and gently tapping. Her entire being was almost submerged in the gloom, with only a faint light catching her profile, reflecting in the Alpha’s pupils.
Smiling, and gentle.
It was entirely different from any time in the past.
Listening to Song Wenzhi’s breathing, Yu Kunian felt for the first time that she seemed to have a lot of patience. She had never waited for someone to fall asleep like this before. She considered herself usually quite prone to impatience, but in front of Song Wenzhi, she wasn’t.
This change, which even surprised Yu Kunian herself, was novel, strange, and bewildering. The Alpha couldn’t find a reason for it. Back at the company, she was often stern and heartless; when several project teams submitted proposals that repeatedly had issues, Yu Kunian would criticize them without mercy. She would get angry and lose her temper. But that heartlessness and impatience became a long-submerged stranger in front of Song Wenzhi.
Yu Kunian knew she had been pretending to play the part of a proper suitor. She had once vowed that it was all an act. But now, looking at Song Wenzhi’s sleeping face, Yu Kunian felt her own calm emotions and was at a loss.
She could wait slowly for Song Wenzhi to enter the land of dreams, no matter how long it took. Even if she did nothing, and just watched Song Wenzhi like this.
Yu Kunian slowly leaned her body toward Song Wenzhi. Her gaze swept over Song Wenzhi’s thick eyelashes by the faint moonlight, then over the bridge of her nose, and finally her two thin lips. The Alpha just watched quietly, but she hadn’t expected the already sleeping Omega to suddenly turn over. Suddenly, she was lying on her side facing Yu Kunian, and unexpectedly, there was less than a fist’s distance between them.
The Alpha’s heart skipped a beat violently. She instinctively held her breath, her eyes widening slightly. Her gaze, which she hadn’t had time to pull back, fell upon Song Wenzhi’s delicate, fair skin. The Omega had a slender build, but her cheeks were somewhat plump. An impulse to reach out and pinch them flashed by, but Yu Kunian clenched her hands to maintain control.
Yu Kunian realized she should leave. However, before departing, she wanted to help Song Wenzhi lie flat again, otherwise, lying on her side like this could easily compress her heart. Just as she stood up and tried to move the Omega gently, Song Wenzhi’s hand came out from under the covers, resting suspended at the edge of the bed. Yu Kunian let out a soft laugh and casually grasped the Omega’s wrist, intending to put it back.
To her surprise, Song Wenzhi suddenly gripped Yu Kunian’s hand back. Her five fingers tightly locked onto Yu Kunian’s palm as if grabbing a life-saving straw, using extreme force. Yu Kunian tried to break free a few times but failed, and she was also afraid of waking Song Wenzhi up.
The Alpha sighed softly and simply sat back down. The temperature in her palm slowly rose. Yu Kunian looked at her hand being held; her fingertips twitched slightly, and her heart felt an indistinct itch, as if brushed by a feather.
Yu Kunian’s return grip was cautious. She had never felt so guilty in her life. Just hold it a little longer, just a little, Yu Kunian thought.
She had originally intended to let go when Song Wenzhi moved again, but Yu Kunian truly hadn’t expected that she could fall asleep while sitting in a chair. The action of the two holding hands tightly remained unchanged like that until dawn.
The blackout property of the curtains in the room wasn’t strong. After the sky brightened, sunlight filtered in, shining on Yu Kunian and casting a few rays onto Song Wenzhi’s bedside. The Omega was the first to wake. She half-opened her eyes, expecting to be stung by the sun, but when she saw someone in front of her, she was stunned for a moment.
The Alpha sat there, one hand propping up her cheek and her eyes closed. Sleeping in a chair like this was truly awkward, especially since the backrest wasn’t comfortable, so Yu Kunian’s brows had been tightly furrowed the whole time.
Her bleary gaze instantly became clear. Yu Kunian’s figure entered her sight. Song Wenzhi’s consciousness hadn’t fully returned yet; she was a bit dazed and wanted to sit up, only then discovering that she and Yu Kunian were holding hands.
“?” Song Wenzhi was stunned again. She noticed her arm was a bit sore, then realized Yu Kunian wasn’t using force—instead, it was her own fingers that had left faint marks on the back of Yu Kunian’s hand.
The temperature in her palm seemed to become scalding in an instant. Song Wenzhi blinked, and in the next moment, she quickly pulled her hand back. Yu Kunian’s hand then dropped down. The Omega clearly realized her own absurd behavior, and the Alpha in front of her also woke up half-asleep because of her movement.
Before Yu Kunian could fully clear her head, the Omega took the initiative and asked: “Why didn’t you leave last night?”
