The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 19
“Lean on me.”
This forgiveness came suddenly, but Yu Kunian felt only a moment of surprise; more than that, she felt a sense of quiet confidence. Yu Kunian smiled at Song Wenzhi. “Thank you, Teacher Song.”
Song Wenzhi stood up. “It’s time to go back.”
Yu Kunian walked side by side with Song Wenzhi, passing through the crowds. When they stopped before a red light at an intersection, Yu Kunian turned to look at the Omega beside her. Her heart stirred slightly, and she suddenly felt that things were truly good.
Everything was good. Now was good. Song Wenzhi was good. Just standing by the other woman’s side brought an indescribable sense of pleasure.
Glimpsing Song Wenzhi’s hair being blown into disarray by the wind and obscuring her eyes, the Alpha’s fingers lifted. Subconsciously, she wanted to reach out and brush it away, but just then, the light turned green, and Song Wenzhi stepped forward. The soft strands of hair fluttered backward with the wind, lightly grazing Yu Kunian’s fingertips—a phantom sensation that vanished in the blink of an eye.
Yu Kunian lowered her gaze and withdrew her hand. It was a moment before she lifted her feet to catch up with Song Wenzhi, yet ripples lingered in her heart for a long time. She watched Song Wenzhi’s back, wondering if her breathing had grown erratic. But the wind was strong; she couldn’t feel it, nor could she hear the passionate beating of her own heart.
It wasn’t until they stopped beneath Song Wenzhi’s hotel that Yu Kunian heard Song Wenzhi say to her, “President Yu, I’ve arrived. You don’t need to walk me any further.”
Yu Kunian’s smile deepened. “Teacher Song, I’m staying here too. What a coincidence.”
Song Wenzhi felt a bit skeptical, but seeing Yu Kunian take out a room card, she simply chalked it up to chance. Later, after taking the elevator upstairs and discovering that Yu Kunian lived directly across from her, she frowned. “President Yu.”
“Goodnight, Teacher Song.” Yu Kunian opened her own door with a beaming smile, pointedly adding, “It really is a coincidence. It’ll be very easy to see each other tomorrow.”
Song Wenzhi wanted to say something, but after thinking for a long while, she said nothing at all. She watched Yu Kunian wave at her before turning around and saying in a very low voice, “Goodnight.”
Song Wenzhi quickly closed her door, while Yu Kunian leaned against her own doorframe, her gaze fixed on the door in front of her, her smile refusing to fade for a long time.
The progress between them, at the very least, had not stalled. Whatever knots remained in Song Wenzhi’s heart, she was working to untie them. Yu Kunian admitted to herself that she didn’t know how to pursue someone, but she was trying her hardest, using the best ways she knew, to raise those invisible “favorability points” in front of Song Wenzhi.
She wanted Song Wenzhi to get used to her presence and adapt to her daily greetings.
Thus, for several days in a row, the small gifts Song Wenzhi received grew more frequent. Yu Kunian was as steady as a rock, standing before the elevator exactly when Song Wenzhi was about to head out, personally handing over a breakfast she had bought in advance and saying “Good morning” with a smile.
When it was time to get off work, Yu Kunian would appear again at the gates of the school where Song Wenzhi was attending the exchange conference. She would take Song Wenzhi out to relax her mind, ensuring she wasn’t constantly stressed by work matters. In this way, Yu Kunian became a sort of remedy for Song Wenzhi.
It was undeniable that Song Wenzhi silently accepted all of Yu Kunian’s actions. She believed Yu Kunian would not overstep, and she found herself unable to resist the other’s approach. The longer they spent together, the more Song Wenzhi realized she couldn’t restrain herself; she had no way to refuse Yu Kunian, nor did she want to.
She began to look forward to finishing work every day. Today, as usual, she stood beneath the teaching building after the exchange meeting ended, looking at the message Yu Kunian had sent her. She replied with a single word: “Okay.”
Over these few days, due to the exchange conference, some students at this school had become familiar with her. Furthermore, her work number was not only listed on Lihua University’s official website but was often written in her introductions. At the start of this exchange meeting, she had told all the attendees that if they needed help, they could call her at any time.
So, when the phone suddenly rang, Song Wenzhi answered without hesitation. The person on the other end seemed to be an Omega, speaking somewhat hesitantly. They said several times that they needed help, but couldn’t clearly explain exactly what was wrong. Song Wenzhi asked for their location.
The answer was a small alley about five hundred meters from the back gate of the school. Song Wenzhi frowned, pausing for a moment before comforting the person and saying she would arrive shortly. After hanging up, Song Wenzhi first started a location share with Yu Kunian, briefly explained the situation, and then excused herself from the other teachers to leave.
Yin City was a relatively underdeveloped city where surveillance was not yet universal, and public security was somewhat lax—especially on the street Song Wenzhi had now reached. The alley the caller mentioned was very narrow, with an old and even dilapidated environment. The streetlights in the alley had been broken for who knows how long. Song Wenzhi looked up at the darkening sky, then toward the nearly pitch-black path ahead.
Song Wenzhi had lived in Yin City for nearly twenty years; she knew this road was notoriously chaotic. But after a moment’s thought, she still stepped into it cautiously. Her flashlight illuminated the path beneath her feet. Before she had walked very far, she heard someone behind her call out in a trembling voice: “Teacher Song.”
Song Wenzhi turned back immediately. An Omega still wearing a school uniform was crying fearfully, not daring to meet her eyes. Only after someone nearby said, “You can go now,” did the student bow quickly to Song Wenzhi. “I’m… I’m sorry, Teacher Song…” Having said that, the Omega fled in a panic.
This student had been threatened.
Song Wenzhi’s heart sank. She pursed her lips tightly and looked at the man before her—an Alpha who was intentionally releasing pheromones. The other party was clearly prepared; he held a small knife and said with a fierce expression, “So you’re Song Wenzhi—you don’t seem like much.”
“Who are you? What do you want?” Song Wenzhi took a few steps back, but escaping from this alley would be difficult. She could only feign composure while asking the question, quietly reaching into her bag.
“You don’t need to know who I am. If you want to blame someone, blame yourself for getting in someone else’s way.”
The small knife reflected the light from Song Wenzhi’s flashlight. The sharp blade slashed toward Song Wenzhi’s direction, but Song Wenzhi moved quickly to pull a spray from her bag. In her panic, she still managed to aim for the other man’s eyes and pressed the nozzle hard.
As a howl rang out, Song Wenzhi switched off her flashlight and turned to run without hesitation. The man, now enraged and with blurred vision, lunged in Song Wenzhi’s direction, his knife swinging wildly. Song Wenzhi tried her best to dodge, but the knife was extremely sharp; even though it only grazed her, a thin trail of blood appeared on her arm.
Song Wenzhi remained calm. She keenly sensed that the man’s target was not her life, but her gland.
Fear occupied Song Wenzhi until Yu Kunian’s arrival finally allowed her to stop running. Leaning against a wall, she felt her legs turn to jelly. Her heartbeat was so loud it felt like it would burst through her eardrums. She gasped for air as Yu Kunian stood before her, asking with immense concern if she was alright.
Song Wenzhi had almost no strength to reply. The escape just now had exhausted her spirit; every sense seemed infinitely magnified, and the lingering fear remained. Not only were her limbs weak, but her breathing remained ragged. Song Wenzhi lifted her fingertips; the thin layer of sweat on her forehead felt a bit sticky. She shook her head gently.
Yu Kunian looked at the Omega before her with a lingering sense of terror. Her fear stemmed from her own worry; from the moment she received Song Wenzhi’s message about a potential accident, Yu Kunian had been unable to find peace. The moment she arrived and saw that knife, her heart nearly stopped beating.
The person with the knife had already been restrained by the people Yu Kunian had called. The turmoil in the alley quickly returned to silence. Song Wenzhi looked up at Yu Kunian, suddenly struck by a tremor of having survived a disaster. Song Wenzhi’s legs were still weak; the strands of hair at her temples were damp with sweat and stuck to her cheeks. Yu Kunian supported her shoulders with one hand while using her fingertips to gently brush back her hair and wipe the thin sweat from her forehead.
Song Wenzhi was having trouble standing steadily. Yu Kunian took a step forward, her voice soft and gentle: “Lean on me.” Yet, her voice was trembling.
Both of their breaths were equally unsteady. At this moment, Song Wenzhi was glad Yu Kunian had come to Yin City. She met Yu Kunian’s eyes; in those amber depths, she saw worry, fear, and self-reproach.
Song Wenzhi closed her eyes. Feeling drained, she lowered her head and leaned it against Yu Kunian’s shoulder. Feeling Yu Kunian’s hand gripping her arm, she felt very safe—with Yu Kunian here, she would be safe.
Yu Kunian’s scent enveloped her invisibly. Song Wenzhi reached out to grab the hem of Yu Kunian’s clothes. She took deep breaths to steady her breathing before finally speaking: “I can’t walk anymore, President Yu.”
Yu Kunian’s voice sounded right in her ear: “I’ll carry you back on my back, is that okay, Teacher Song?”
Song Wenzhi nodded. “Okay.”
Yu Kunian’s fingertips pressed against Song Wenzhi’s waist to steady her. Even through her clothes, a heat seemed to pass through, causing Song Wenzhi’s breath to hitch. Watching Yu Kunian crouch down, Song Wenzhi leaned over to lie on the Alpha’s back, her arms looping around Yu Kunian’s neck. Her legs were held firmly by Yu Kunian. The two had never been this close before, and that invisible heat quickly spread throughout her entire body.
This dim alley was very narrow, acting as the “culprit” that drew their distance close. Leaning on Yu Kunian’s back, all of Song Wenzhi’s fear vanished. She felt the warmth coming from Yu Kunian’s neck and watched as they gradually left that road, walking out of the gloomy alley.
On the familiar tree-lined boulevard, the streetlights were a dim yellow and shadows flickered. Pedestrians hurried by, and occasionally the bell of a bicycle would ring out as it brushed past them; today was still just an ordinary day. The shadows of the two of them would lengthen and then shorten. Song Wenzhi grew completely calm. Looking at the shadows on the ground and then at Yu Kunian, her heart stirred.
Yu Kunian carried her very steadily, afraid that Song Wenzhi would feel uncomfortable.
Unexpectedly, Song Wenzhi began to feel a bit uncomfortable, but it wasn’t because of Yu Kunian. It was because her scent-blocking patch had been soaked with sweat during her panicked run earlier. In the damp environment, her patch had failed ahead of time.
“President Yu.” Song Wenzhi frowned, loosening her grip slightly. Fortunately, the patch could still hold for a little while, so her pheromones hadn’t leaked out yet. “Let me down. I need to change my scent-blocker.”
Yu Kunian’s footsteps stopped. She looked around and eventually brought Song Wenzhi to a stop in front of a street bench, then carefully set Song Wenzhi down. When she turned around, Song Wenzhi took a spare scent-blocker from her bag and tilted her head to let her hair fall to one side. She was going to apply it herself, but the patch in her hand was taken by Yu Kunian.
Yu Kunian said, “I’ll help you, Teacher Song.”
Song Wenzhi was startled. She looked up at the Alpha; the concern in the other’s eyes was hard to hide. The refusal the Omega had intended to speak was ultimately swallowed back down. Song Wenzhi nodded and said, “Thank you.”
For now, her pheromones weren’t too strong, not enough to affect Yu Kunian.
Yu Kunian leaned down, approaching Song Wenzhi. Her gaze rested on Song Wenzhi’s fair nape. Her breathing trembled slightly as she reached down to remove the original patch. In the blink of an eye, that faint, phantom scent of Song Wenzhi’s pheromones was keenly detected by Yu Kunian.
Coconut candy—Song Wenzhi’s pheromone.
Yu Kunian’s fingertips curled instinctively, and even her movements faltered for a moment. A beat later, the new scent-blocker was finally applied to Song Wenzhi’s gland. It was inevitable that her fingertips would brush against Song Wenzhi’s skin; Yu Kunian felt as if an electric current had passed through her, and she quickly withdrew her hand.
The Alpha’s breathing had grown frantic.
