The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 17
“I’m going to break my word.”
Song Wenzhi seemed startled for a moment, but she quickly recovered her composure. “President Yu, I’m going to an out-of-town exchange meeting tomorrow. I’m going to break my word.”
The word she was breaking was the “see you tomorrow” she had previously uttered.
“Alright,” Yu Kunian nodded. “How long will you be gone?”
Song Wenzhi replied, “A week.”
They wouldn’t see each other for an entire week. Yu Kunian was clearly caught off guard by this sudden arrangement. Because of what had happened today, Yu Kunian had needed time to make amends; she hadn’t expected an exchange meeting to disrupt all her plans.
But she quickly came up with a countermeasure. Through a few lines of chat with Song Wenzhi, Yu Kunian finally learned that Song Wenzhi was going to Yin City, and she even managed to get a vague idea of the hotel’s general location. Her mood instantly brightened, and she threw the irritation of being provoked earlier to the back of her mind.
Song Wenzhi didn’t say much to her. During the five-minute call, she finally asked the question she had been mentally rehearsing out of concern. After receiving an answer that indicated Yu Kunian showed no signs of illness, she gave a soft “mm” and quickly hung up.
The corners of Yu Kunian’s lips curled upward. She felt a sense of joy from Song Wenzhi’s single expression of concern, and she couldn’t help but recall Song Wenzhi’s face. However, the image in her mind was suddenly interrupted by an incoming call. Yu Kunian frowned and looked down at her old phone; the caller was Yu Dai.
Presumably, that Omega from earlier had filed a complaint and wanted Yu Dai to step in and suppress her. The gloom in the depths of Yu Kunian’s eyes reappeared. She picked up the phone slowly, striking first:
“I’m going on a business trip next.”
Yu Dai hadn’t expected Yu Kunian to say this. She was confused for a moment before realizing that Yu Kunian was blocking her from bringing up the pheromone compatibility test. She instinctively questioned, “I haven’t heard of any business trip arrangements for you. What project is it?”
“A temporary trip. Is there a problem?” Yu Kunian explained unhurriedly. “The company needs to attract investment. It’s normal for me to travel.”
Yu Dai reluctantly accepted this reason. She asked again, “Where are you going?”
Yu Kunian replied, “Do I need to tell you every single detail, Mother?”
Because of the surveillance issue, Yu Kunian was already very dissatisfied. Especially since she had used Song Wenzhi as a threat today, the relationship between them had become strained to the breaking point. At this juncture, Yu Dai didn’t dare push too hard. After all, she didn’t want Yu Kunian to truly loathe her as a mother; saying certain things was one thing, but if she actually followed through, there would be no room for reconciliation. She still knew where to draw the line.
If she asked too many detailed questions, Yu Kunian might flip out again and refuse to come home for months. Yu Dai couldn’t use threats every single time; otherwise, it would become a “boy who cried wolf” situation.
Thus, Yu Dai could only follow along and say, “Then come back early.”
Yu Kunian gave a casual response and couldn’t wait to hang up. She used a towel to dry her damp hair. While contemplating how to deal with the subsequent arranged marriage, she suddenly noticed something slightly amiss. She vaguely remembered that the family Yu Dai had found did indeed have a reputation in the business circle, but not to the extent of being desperate for an arranged marriage to extract more profit.
Zhaoming Biotech needed more investment than before to support the production of new products. Meanwhile, the other party’s status was currently stable, and it was rumored they had long been preparing for an IPO. Logically, it should be Yu Kunian’s side trying to seize this opportunity, rather than the other side wanting to get married immediately. Recalling the situation this afternoon, Yu Kunian realized in hindsight that the party who shouldn’t have been in a hurry was acting strangely impatient.
Yu Kunian lowered her eyes, and the room fell into a moment of silence. Finally, Yu Kunian sent several messages to Jiang Qiu, asking her to help look into the actual detailed current situation of the other party’s company.
Yin City was not as developed as Lihua City; it was a relatively backward small city. Moreover, the rumors from several years ago about building an airport seemed to have never been fulfilled. Therefore, traveling from Lihua City to Yin City required taking a flight and then transferring to a high-speed train in a neighboring city, which still took a considerable amount of time.
Yu Kunian had a meeting in the morning. By the time she arrived in Yin City, it was already sunset.
Although the city was small and the architectural scenery couldn’t compare to Lihua City, when Yu Kunian walked out of the high-speed rail exit and looked up at the sky, she felt a bit more relaxed and comfortable than usual. Her assistant had made preparations in Yin City in advance and was already waiting with a car to pick her up and take her to the designated hotel.
—The same one as Song Wenzhi.
Yu Kunian was a bit tired. She detached her thoughts and simply gazed aimlessly at the passing scenery outside the window. There weren’t many commercial skyscrapers here; most were streets lined with shops. The city center was bustling. It was probably the evening rush hour in Yin City, as there were many people by the roadside. The road was dyed with the colors of the setting sun, and Yu Kunian inexplicably saw a sense of peace in it.
The car stopped in front of an ordinary hotel in the city center. Yu Kunian got out and checked in. The hotel room was simpler than she had imagined—at least, she had never stayed in a hotel like this before. After placing her suitcase by the bed, Yu Kunian opened her phone and saw that the message she sent to Song Wenzhi had not yet been replied to, making her feel a sense of loss.
She wanted to know what Song Wenzhi was busy with. Although yesterday’s phone call had yielded some information, she knew nothing about where Song Wenzhi’s exchange meeting was or what it was about. Yu Kunian sat on the bed for a long time, but no message ever arrived. She sighed and finally decided to go out for dinner first.
Fortunately, there were many restaurants near the city center, so Yu Kunian didn’t have to travel far. After looking around for a while, she randomly chose a shop with a somewhat unique storefront and went inside. There were many customers at this time. Yu Kunian was lucky; a seat by the window had just become vacant.
Just as she sat down to order, Song Wenzhi’s message finally came through. The Omega said she was eating with colleagues. Yu Kunian said what a coincidence, so was she.
Yu Kunian didn’t intend to hide the fact that she had also come to Yin City. She took a photo of the heavy traffic outside the restaurant and sent it to Song Wenzhi, saying she had just sat down. Song Wenzhi’s reply was quick: It looks a bit familiar.
Yu Kunian guessed that Song Wenzhi would find it familiar. After all, Yin City was Song Wenzhi’s hometown, and the city center was surely the place she knew best. A single street was enough for Song Wenzhi to notice. Although Yu Kunian had been to Yin City before, she hadn’t stayed long, so her impression wasn’t very deep; she only vaguely remembered the location of the school.
Song Wenzhi sent another message: It doesn’t look like Lihua City.
Yu Kunian: I’m on a business trip.
Song Wenzhi: Where?
Yu Kunian didn’t reply immediately. She was weighing whether to tell Song Wenzhi now or give her a surprise after returning to the hotel.
Before her thoughts could reach a conclusion, the tabletop in front of her was lightly tapped by a knuckle. Yu Kunian instinctively looked up and was momentarily stunned.
Song Wenzhi was standing in front of her, looking down at her.
