The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 16
“I Only Want a Future With You”
The rain was pouring heavily, so heavy that the droplets hitting the umbrella’s surface seemed to crash brutally into Yu Kunian’s heart, making her wonder if she was experiencing auditory hallucinations.
“Teacher Song,” Yu Kunian gazed into Song Wenzhi’s eyes, finally discovering a trace of hard-to-detect cautiousness within them.
“How could there not be?” Yu Kunian’s throat vibrated slightly with her words. She didn’t know why Song Wenzhi had suddenly conceived such an idea.
Yu Kunian’s low-voiced inquiry brought Song Wenzhi back to her senses, but since the words had already been spoken, Song Wenzhi decided to make herself even clearer. “President Yu, actually, the question you should be asking is ‘why would there be.’ In the short term, I am merely someone who provides a momentary sense of novelty to you. In the long run, I have no qualification and shouldn’t be with you. You have many choices; even if you grew tired of me, it would be within the realm of reason, because you have other people better than me to choose from. I am different from you, President Yu.”
Yu Kunian was speechless for a moment. She frowned. “How are we different?”
Song Wenzhi paused. “I don’t have many choices. I only ever recognize one person, and there won’t be other Alphas waiting for me.”
Yu Kunian remained silent for a long time. She slowed her breathing, her fingertips gripping the umbrella handle tightly. She finally knew Song Wenzhi’s true thoughts, but at the moment of hearing them, her emotions were incredibly complex.
“Teacher Song, you don’t understand me.” Yu Kunian lowered her eyes. “So… you cannot be so certain that I would be that kind of person. To me, you are absolutely not just a momentary novelty, nor will there ever be a situation where I grow tired of you. I am pursuing you because I want to have a future with you.”
Yu Kunian’s voice wasn’t loud, but it fell upon Song Wenzhi’s ears with the force of a deafening roar. Song Wenzhi knew she had used outside rumors to speculate on a bad outcome, and she understood that Yu Kunian might not be that kind of person, but she still didn’t dare to be certain of Yu Kunian’s sincerity. She consistently used the worst-case scenario to tell herself that things would never turn out as one hoped.
Song Wenzhi had always been prone to gains and losses. In this situation, only Yu Kunian’s promise could serve as a stabilizing force for her—and not just once, but through repeated and firm commitments.
But such repetition can become annoying; it can make one feel tired and restrained. Song Wenzhi had thought about this—her thinking was too idealistic. Perhaps it shouldn’t be this way, yet she couldn’t help but harbor fantasies about Yu Kunian.
But all of this was her being too self-righteous.
“I… I’m sor—” Song Wenzhi wanted to apologize, but Yu Kunian suddenly raised her hand. Her fingertips stopped in front of her, hovering over Song Wenzhi’s lips, blocking the rest of her sentence.
“Teacher Song, you are my only choice. No one else can compare to you; I have always believed that. I know that because of my status, everyone assumes I will date someone from my business circles, but those rumors will be debunked in the future—Teacher Song, I only want a future with you.” Yu Kunian could not finish these words very calmly. Her voice faltered a few times, her expression revealing a few flashes of unidentifiable determination. “A future for many years to come.”
The word “future” could be very distant, but it could also be very close. Tomorrow, she wanted to meet Song Wenzhi. The day after tomorrow, she wanted to have lunch with her… In the future, she wanted to see Song Wenzhi every day. Rumors were always just rumors; that was the Yu Kunian other people imagined. No one could represent Yu Kunian herself.
Just as she would never accept Yu Dai’s arrangements.
The current atmosphere wasn’t ideal. The heavy rain was noisy in their ears, and the wind sweeping up the rainwater made their fingertips feel cold. Occasional thunder and lightning even added a few layers of low pressure to the mood.
Yu Kunian’s words should perhaps have been spoken on a more formal occasion, but even under this stormy weather, Song Wenzhi felt that the promise Yu Kunian made was solemn and credible.
In that instant, Song Wenzhi felt her heart racing. She felt as if she had been seen through by Yu Kunian, because she truly had hoped for a future. She thought Yu Kunian wouldn’t be serious, but the next moment, when she looked up, she crashed into the Alpha’s eyes—she was looking at her deeply, as if inviting her to sink into them.
Song Wenzhi’s fingers curled up inside her sleeves, and her breathing inadvertently grew ragged. She heard her own voice, which was so soft it was almost inaudible: “President Yu, I misunderstood you.”
Not just that sentence, but the rest, the Omega could not say out loud.
Yu Kunian heard her. “Teacher Song, this isn’t your fault. I should have said these things sooner. There are indeed too many rumors about me, and they do affect one’s judgment; that’s only natural. But even though I’m saying it only now, it should still be in time, right?”
Song Wenzhi nodded. After a moment of hesitation, her gaze landed on Yu Kunian’s disheveled appearance. “President Yu, you should go back. You are soaked through, and it’s easy to get sick like this.”
Yu Kunian didn’t leave immediately. She confirmed one more time with Song Wenzhi: “We aren’t over, Teacher Song.”
Song Wenzhi gave an “En,” and after a pause, added: “See you tomorrow, President Yu.”
Only then did Yu Kunian feel relieved. She watched Song Wenzhi go back before turning away with her umbrella. The Alpha’s silhouette appeared somewhat thin in the heavy rain. Yu Kunian walked quickly, the darkness in her eyes well-hidden. Once back in her car, Yu Kunian rested her hand on the steering wheel, recalling the words she had just said to see if there were any flaws.
Bowing one’s head appropriately was a strategy.
But why did it seem like she was actually a bit sad? Could it be that she had entered the role too deeply?
When she arrived at her doorstep, the assistant she had instructed had already delivered her phone—the one Yu Dai had taken—wrapped in a package. Yu Kunian opened the box with a cold expression. There were many messages in the list. Yang Jin was at the very top; the latest message was from three minutes ago.
Yang Jin had pushed the contact information of the Omega they met today to her, urging her to interact more with the other party. Yu Kunian didn’t reply, but there was a new friend request in her list. She didn’t need to guess who it was, so she ignored it.
After returning to the house, Yu Kunian showered first. When she came out of the bathroom, there were several missed calls from an unknown number. Just as Yu Kunian picked up the phone, the number called again. She hesitated for a moment, then swiped to answer, speaking indifferently: “Who is this?”
The voice on the other end sounded somewhat familiar: “President Yu, it’s me. We met this afternoon.”
It was exactly the Omega from the family proposed for the marriage alliance. Yu Kunian’s eyes chilled several degrees, and her tone was far from pleasant: “Is something the matter?”
The other party seemed completely oblivious and said, “Auntie Yu said we should find a time soon to go test our pheromone compatibility. I know you’re busy, President Yu, but this matter is very important. I hope you can make time, the sooner the better.”
Yu Kunian gave a cold laugh. She didn’t believe this Omega hadn’t seen her dissatisfaction with the marriage alliance, and she could hear the other party using Yu Dai to pressure her—it sounded like a query on the surface, but it was actually a notification. This personality was far too familiar and loathsome. Yu Kunian’s face darkened completely as she asked in return, “Are we close?”
“What?”
“By what status are you ordering me around?”
“President Yu, didn’t we meet today for the purpose of getting married?” The other party was clearly angered by her words; she hadn’t expected Yu Kunian to be so heartless. “Auntie Yu told me that as long as our pheromones are compatible, we can register the marriage very quickly.”
“Since she’s the one who said it, then you should go register with her,” Yu Kunian said ruthlessly. She let out a mocking laugh. “Zhaoming Biotech is not short of investors, nor does it need a commercial marriage to stabilize its position. Whatever Yu Dai told you has nothing to do with me, Yu Kunian. Don’t think for a second that you can use Yu Dai to make me submit. You’d better recognize your place, or else don’t blame me for being heartless.”
The voice from the receiver became much sharper as the other side grew exasperated, subsequently trying to speak threateningly: “President Yu, are you sure you want to offend—”
Before the words were finished, a call came through on the new phone Yu Kunian had bought today. Yu Kunian’s gaze transformed in that instant, completely replacing the previous sharpness with warmth. After coldly saying “Suit yourself,” Yu Kunian impatiently hung up the phone and unhesitatingly answered the call from Song Wenzhi.
Yu Kunian didn’t notice it herself, but her icy aura had vanished, and her expression was even coated with an incredible softness. Her voice was very light, the corners of her lips slightly upturned: “Teacher Song, what is it?”
