The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 15
“Teacher Song, must you be so resolute?”
By the time Yu Kunian escaped from that “Hongmen Banquet,” night had already fallen. Her phone still hadn’t been recovered, so she had no choice but to get a new SIM card, buy a phone at a nearby store, and call Song Wenzhi immediately on the spot.
The Alpha was indeed anxious. As soon as Song Wenzhi picked up, she spoke instantly, but her unfinished sentence was interrupted by Song Wenzhi: “President Yu… is there something you need?”
The Omega’s tone was distant and cold. Even though Yu Kunian had expected this, her heart still skipped a beat. She slowly leveled her breathing, ignoring the thin layer of sweat on her forehead from running just now. Her thoughts raced frantically, wondering how she should explain herself.
She wouldn’t tell Song Wenzhi that she had been forced into a “blind date,” nor could she speak of her family’s attitude. She needed to avoid all of that and not mention a single word about what truly happened today.
“I was delayed by an unexpected matter. Teacher Song, I’m sorry.” Yu Kunian lowered her voice, saying this first to test Song Wenzhi’s reaction.
There was a long silence on the other end. Yu Kunian thought several times that the call had been disconnected. Just as she was about to speak again, Song Wenzhi’s voice came through: “President Yu, if there’s a problem, you could have said so in advance.”
Beneath the calm voice, it felt as if dark clouds were hidden. Yu Kunian sensed it acutely.
“There was an issue with my phone, and I couldn’t get away at the time. I am very sorry, Teacher Song,” Yu Kunian explained sincerely. “Originally, I thought I could make it, but I didn’t expect one accident after another to occur. I couldn’t find an opportunity to send you a message.”
Song Wenzhi seemed to take a deep breath. She continued calmly: “Is that so? That’s quite a coincidence then, President Yu.”
Everything happened at the same time—it was a coincidence. From leaving school at noon until now, nearly seven or eight hours had passed without a single message—that was also a coincidence.
The corners of Song Wenzhi’s mouth quirked up bitterly. She said with complexity, “I can believe what President Yu says, but I’m afraid I cannot accept your failure to keep the appointment.”
Yu Kunian said, “Of course. I was wrong in this matter to begin with. I will make it up to you, Teacher Song.”
But Song Wenzhi said, “There’s no need.” She didn’t want it.
There was a moment of silence in the receiver. Song Wenzhi’s tone was so unyielding for a moment that Yu Kunian was stunned. Song Wenzhi seemed to realize this a moment later, pausing before adding, “I think we might not be suitable for further interaction, President Yu.” She was tactful, but the meaning was clear.
“Can’t Teacher Song even give me one chance for forgiveness?” Yu Kunian softened her voice, though her tone couldn’t hide her shock and a flash of panic. She hadn’t expected Song Wenzhi to be so resolute.
Her heart felt as if it had been pricked. Yu Kunian hurried out of the mobile store, turned to get into her car, and drove toward Lihua University. Song Wenzhi’s meaning was that they weren’t suited to be together, but Yu Kunian didn’t think so. They hadn’t even had much contact yet—could it be dismissed just like that?
There were many cars on the road at night. Yu Kunian tightened her grip on the steering wheel. She heard Song Wenzhi’s voice, very soft: “President Yu, I said this morning—I would wait for you to come.”
Yu Kunian didn’t know how long Song Wenzhi had struggled before she could say that explanation. The Omega was disappointed and dejected. Song Wenzhi’s own thoughts were a mess; she felt that for things she couldn’t figure out, it was better to simply cut them off cleanly.
Yu Kunian realized then that the Omega had no idea how long she had waited for her. That sentence was like a short but sharp knife stabbing into her heart. Yu Kunian’s fingertips stiffened, her car speed slowing down at that moment. The Alpha’s breath trembled, and it was a long time before she spoke: “I’m sorry, Teacher Song…”
Yu Kunian used to think that an apology could earn forgiveness, but with Song Wenzhi, it wasn’t so. Her three apologies had ultimately only resulted in Song Wenzhi’s sentence: “Not very suitable.”
“President Yu, I don’t feel that you value my invitation very much.” Song Wenzhi did not accept her apology; she only said that one sentence.
After speaking, the call was promptly hung up. Yu Kunian only managed to say the word “I” before she lost the chance to speak further. Her driving speed became even faster than before. Yu Kunian frowned, her lips pressed tight, her expression even worse than earlier. Her mind was filled only with the words Song Wenzhi had just said.
Until she stopped downstairs at the apartment building, Yu Kunian looked up with a complex expression at the floor where the Omega lived. She quickly dialed Song Wenzhi’s number again. The moment the ringing tone started, she felt relieved that Song Wenzhi hadn’t blocked her yet. This time, Song Wenzhi answered faster than the last. Before Song Wenzhi could speak, Yu Kunian said, “Teacher Song, can we meet and talk?”
“It’s very late, President Yu.”
“I’m downstairs.”
As soon as she finished speaking, Song Wenzhi’s figure appeared on the eighth-floor balcony. Yu Kunian’s gaze swept upward. She wasn’t sure if that somewhat blurry silhouette was Song Wenzhi, but the Alpha deliberately curled her lips into a smile, hiding the exhaustion in her eyes, and said again: “Teacher Song, I won’t take up much of your time.”
Song Wenzhi didn’t know if she had locked eyes with Yu Kunian. She didn’t speak; she simply stepped back after Yu Kunian spoke until Yu Kunian probably couldn’t see her anymore.
Song Wenzhi said, “President Yu, please go back.”
Yu Kunian said, “Teacher Song, must you be so resolute?”
Song Wenzhi didn’t answer Yu Kunian. She stood by the balcony door, controlling the urge to look down, but she couldn’t control her erratic breathing. Song Wenzhi didn’t want to, but before this call from Yu Kunian came, she had realized one thing.
Yu Kunian and she were not from the same world.
Song Wenzhi thought she could wait until this diversion ended before pulling away, but she found she was wrong. Even with today’s events, she couldn’t accept it. So if she faced a future where Yu Kunian really grew tired of her, what would happen to her then?
Song Wenzhi didn’t want to know, and she didn’t dare to think about it.
So she said, “You have already apologized, President Yu. I accept it.”
Yu Kunian felt somewhat aggrieved: “But you haven’t forgiven me yet.”
“When I forget, I will forgive you.” Song Wenzhi’s tone remained firm.
With that, Song Wenzhi hung up the phone again. She didn’t dare look toward the window again; instead, she turned and switched off the lights in the room, her meaning very clear. Standing in the darkness, the Omega muted her phone and placed it face down on the nightstand, hoping to drive Yu Kunian away this way.
Half an hour later, Song Wenzhi sat on the bed with no desire to sleep. A sudden clap of thunder startled her. She turned to look toward the balcony and a moment later heard the loud, frantic sound of rain pelting the window.
This rain came unexpectedly and quickly turned into a downpour. Lightning flashed across the sky from time to time. Song Wenzhi knit her brows tightly, unintentionally biting her lower lip, worrying whether Yu Kunian had left yet.
But then she thought Yu Kunian wouldn’t let herself get caught in the rain. Perhaps as soon as she finished speaking, Yu Kunian had already gone back. How could she be waiting bitterly downstairs for her?
But the pitter-patter of raindrops hitting the window made Song Wenzhi truly worried. After hesitating several times, she finally returned to the balcony and looked down. To her surprise, Yu Kunian was still in the same spot, not having moved at all. She hadn’t brought an umbrella and just stood there fixedly.
All her reservations were shattered by the Alpha’s figure downstairs. Song Wenzhi didn’t care about anything else—she didn’t even have time to check her phone—and hurriedly grabbed an umbrella before heading out. She took the elevator down. The moment she saw Yu Kunian, her footsteps faltered, and her breathing almost stalled.
Yu Kunian was miserably soaked. Her originally beautiful curls were plastered against her neck, dripping with water. Her dignified and expensive long dress had become somewhat unseemly because of the rain. In this heavy rain, Yu Kunian lost her usual composure. If anyone who knew her saw her, they would surely be astonished that the President Yu, who was so at ease in the business world, could have such a despondent moment.
The Alpha saw Song Wenzhi instantly. Her gaze fell tightly upon the Omega, filled with grievance and sadness. But Yu Kunian quickly lowered her eyes. As she watched Song Wenzhi slowly approach, she asked softly: “Teacher Song, why?”
Why was she suddenly so resolute, not even giving her a chance to make amends?
Song Wenzhi didn’t know what to say and didn’t dare look at Yu Kunian again. She immediately shoved the umbrella into Yu Kunian’s hand, intending to turn and leave. But Yu Kunian was quick and grabbed her wrist, asking again: “Teacher Song, is there some misunderstanding between us?”
Yu Kunian couldn’t figure it out. She felt that Song Wenzhi wasn’t the kind of person who would immediately cut off contact before things were explained clearly. There must be something else that caused Song Wenzhi to be this way.
Song Wenzhi didn’t look back, but she couldn’t break free either. She could only stand there and say, “There isn’t. President Yu, the rain is too heavy. Please go back.”
Yu Kunian asked instead, “Teacher Song, do you hate me?”
Song Wenzhi was silent. She didn’t want to speak words that went against her heart again: “No.”
“Then why…” Yu Kunian’s voice was low. “I didn’t disregard your invitation. I really was delayed by a sudden accident. Teacher Song, you can blame me, but don’t end this, okay?”
Song Wenzhi sighed. “I understand, President Yu.”
“You don’t understand.” Yu Kunian shook her head. “Teacher Song, you don’t understand.”
Song Wenzhi finally turned back to look at her. Yu Kunian raised her eyes again, as if trying to probe for a reason in the Omega’s eyes, but she couldn’t see it—just as she couldn’t decipher Song Wenzhi’s emotions before.
Yu Kunian didn’t know how many times she had felt frustrated with Song Wenzhi. Song Wenzhi was an Omega who couldn’t be seen through, and she always felt helpless. But she was glad it was raining today, glad Song Wenzhi had come downstairs, and glad that her “misery tactic” was at least useful for Song Wenzhi.
Thus, her eyes held a bit more pity. She moved a few inches closer to Song Wenzhi and spoke again: “Teacher Song, I am sincere.”
Song Wenzhi stared at her for a long, long time. The sound of the rain was noisy, but it didn’t drown out Yu Kunian’s words. Song Wenzhi’s gaze finally landed on the hand Yu Kunian used to grip her, as if her defenses had finally been breached. She said, “President Yu, I don’t like being lied to.”
Even if Yu Kunian hadn’t intended it, today’s outcome was still the disappointment of her expectations. The Alpha she had waited for didn’t come. Anyone who waited for someone for hours and couldn’t even get in touch would be angry.
Yu Kunian immediately promised her: “It won’t happen again. I… I won’t lie to you again in the future.”
Hearing this, Song Wenzhi looked at Yu Kunian calmly. She hesitated several times but still couldn’t help asking, “President Yu, will we have a ‘future’?”
