The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 14
“I Am the One Entangling Her”
Hearing Song Wenzhi’s name from Yu Dai’s mouth was within Yu Kunian’s expectations, but not this early. She had only recently come into contact with Song Wenzhi; aside from those within the academy, not many people should know that her frequent trips to Lihua University were because of Teacher Song.
It was obvious: Yu Dai was investigating her, or rather, had people monitoring her. Similarly, Yu Dai had investigated Song Wenzhi in great detail.
Yu Kunian said, “I hate being monitored. For Mother to engage in such despicable behavior, don’t you think it’s excessive? Moreover, Teacher Song does not have the vanity you speak of. I ask that Mother refrains from looking at people through tinted glasses.”
“If you were obedient, there would be no need for us to monitor you,” Yu Dai explained calmly, yet she naturally shifted the blame for the surveillance onto Yu Kunian. “A debt-ridden Omega trying to climb up to you can only be doing so because she values your family status, your background, and your money. Everyone in Lihua City wants to cling to the Yu family; what makes you think she isn’t one of them?”
Yang Jin explained from the side, “Niannian, a friend saw you by chance and told us. You didn’t tell us before which Omega you were interested in, but we wanted to know, so we looked into it.”
“You’ve got it wrong. I’m the one entangling her.” Yu Kunian entered the house and looked at them closely, finding it laughable. The two people before her could so easily say such things—clearly without understanding the situation, yet speaking with such grand authority, as if because they “cared” for her, the other person must have filthy intentions. “Since you’ve already investigated, you can’t possibly not know that I am the one sticking to her of my own accord.”
Yu Dai raised her eyes to stare at her, the indignation beneath them hard to conceal. “I will not agree to this.”
“I never asked for your opinion,” Yu Kunian said.
She began to turn away immediately after speaking. Yu Kunian’s expression was cold and hesitant, which further enraged the Alpha behind her. Yu Dai’s patience was completely exhausted as she barked, “Stop right there.”
Yu Kunian did not stop. She was about to step over the threshold again to leave, but she suddenly heard Yu Dai’s threatening words: “If you dare walk out of this door now, I will make your so-called Teacher Song lose her job immediately and force her to leave Lihua City. You know that the current situation for Omegas isn’t exactly great; if she can’t stay in Lihua City, what will happen to her?”
Yu Kunian’s steps retracted in that instant. She still kept her back to the two of them; her attitude remained firm, but Yu Dai had more means at her disposal. Her fingertips dug forcefully into her palms, yet Yu Kunian didn’t feel the pain at all. Instead, the dark clouds looming over her heart gave birth to a sense of powerlessness as her gaze fell upon the door in front of her.
She was only a step away from the half-open door, yet no further words came from behind her. Yu Dai always knew how to make her obey. The gloom in Yu Kunian’s eyes deepened, and her breathing grew heavier. She heard her own voice, which was less steady than usual: “Mother has maintained a good reputation in the Committee for many years; will you really engage in such an act of personal favoritism and malpractice?”
“Yu Kunian, I don’t mind breaking the rules this once.” With Yu Dai’s status, she only needed to mention it in passing—she didn’t even need to speak clearly—and someone would do it for her.
Even a special appointment at Lihua University could not withstand a single notice from the Committee.
Yu Kunian felt as though her breath was stagnating. Her throat was extremely bitter, and she let out a self-mocking laugh. She laughed at her own continued overestimation of her strength, and she hated the fact that her surname was Yu.
“If you lay a hand on her,” Yu Kunian began, speaking one word at a time. She didn’t know how else she could fight against Yu Dai. After a long pause, she continued, “I will make you regret it, no matter the cost.”
Perhaps in Yu Dai’s ears, what she said was merely a hollow, unthreatening boast. But only Yu Kunian knew that she had been preparing—though everything was currently insufficient, and it was not the best time.
Despite already being President Yu of Zhaoming Biotech and the famous Yu Kunian of Lihua City, she still could not escape Yu Dai’s control. Just as she had never been able to leave Lihua City, she was trapped here, with no freedom to speak of.
Her feet felt as if they weighed a thousand pounds. Yu Kunian released her fingertips; a sharp sting came from her palms, but it couldn’t compare to the sourness welling up in her heart, which had been slowly torturing her for a long time, seeping into her very bones. After a moment, she turned around. Her numb gaze fell upon the faces of Yu Dai and Yang Jin. Yu Kunian knew her face must be pale right now.
“Eat something, put on some makeup, pick out some formal clothes, and go meet a guest this afternoon,” Yu Dai said in a calm tone. She instructed Yu Kunian with the high-and-mighty posture of a victor, indeed not taking Yu Kunian’s words to heart.
Yu Kunian had no appetite. She only asked, “What time this afternoon?” She still had to see Song Wenzhi tonight; she needed to adjust her state of mind before then.
Yu Dai paused for a moment, her brow furrowing imperceptibly, but she answered her anyway: “Three o’clock.”
Yu Kunian didn’t respond. Upon hearing the time, she went upstairs, seemingly ignoring Yang Jin and Yu Dai. Her mood was wretched now. After closing her bedroom door, she felt overwhelmed by exhaustion and leaned against the window with her eyes closed to recover her spirits.
Sometimes, she wished she wasn’t Yu Kunian.
A moment later, the Alpha opened her phone and looked at her chat window with Song Wenzhi. She wanted to send a message, but after typing a few words, she deleted them. Opening the class schedule, she saw that Song Wenzhi was currently in class. Yu Kunian couldn’t help but recall how close they had been this morning; the Omega’s voice had echoed in her ear, clear and soul-stirring. Yu Kunian had lost her train of thought several times.
Song Wenzhi seemed to have a special magic for her, able to turn her gloom into sunshine, but Yu Kunian didn’t know why.
At three o’clock in the afternoon, they met the so-called guest on time. The paleness on Yu Kunian’s face was gone; Yang Jin had helped her use makeup to cover the dark circles under her eyes. At this moment, she was a proper and dignified Alpha.
Yu Kunian didn’t remember what the Omega opposite her was named, nor did she bother to listen. She only heard the other person boastfully showing off their family background and their place in the business world. Yu Dai and the other party discussed business operations in a way that didn’t make it feel like a matchmaking session at all, but rather like a commercial exchange, which Yu Kunian found tedious.
Thus, Yu Kunian used the excuse of going to the restroom to catch her breath. She thought that as long as she dealt with this gathering and then found an opportunity to ruin this marriage alliance, she could escape and head to Lihua University for her appointment. But it was only when her phone went missing and Yu Dai suddenly suggested having dinner together that evening that Yu Kunian realized something was wrong.
The purpose of today’s academy activity was relaxation, so when she saw that Yu Kunian was in low spirits, Song Wenzhi had invited her to come. The content of the activity wasn’t complicated—just playing a few small games and then watching a music performance, which was rare within the academy.
Song Wenzhi was still wearing the hair clip Yu Kunian had given her this morning. Before the activity started, she sent several messages to Yu Kunian, but strangely, she received no reply. As the time drew near, Song Wenzhi couldn’t help but feel worried, so she went to the school gate. She made several calls; at first, they went unanswered, and later, the phone was turned off.
Hearing the busy signal of a powered-down phone, Song Wenzhi was momentarily dazed. She stood there in disbelief, but her reason told her that Yu Kunian might be tied up by company matters and her phone just happened to run out of power. Since she had already promised, Yu Kunian wouldn’t fail to come.
But as night fell and the activity had been underway for a long time, the streetlights at the school gate stretched Song Wenzhi’s shadow very long. The night wind also dropped in temperature, yet Yu Kunian’s figure still hadn’t appeared. An hour had already passed since their appointed time. Every minute and second of waiting was so agonizing that Song Wenzhi went from expectation to disappointment. She curled her cold fingers. She didn’t reply to the messages from colleagues asking for her whereabouts, but instead just stared blankly at the three words “Yu Kunian” that had been pushed down the list.
Finally, looking at the vehicles coming and going before her, she pursed her lips.
Yu Kunian wasn’t coming.
Song Wenzhi looked up. She saw a few clusters of fireworks rushing into the sky, accompanied by ear-splitting sounds. The sky erupted in light, illuminating Song Wenzhi’s figure and the Omega’s pair of sorrowful eyes. In that instant, Song Wenzhi took a deep breath, suppressing the stinging sensation in her nose, and murmured almost inaudibly, “Yu Kunian.”
—Why didn’t you come to the appointment?
No one gave Song Wenzhi an answer. She had been stood up for no apparent reason. The night she had looked forward to had ended in such a way.
A moment later, Song Wenzhi turned to enter the school. As she got closer to the playground, the sound of the music became clearer, accompanied by the cheers of everyone. The atmosphere was ignited, and everyone present was laughing. She should have been one of them, having a good time and enjoying a brief moment of entertainment, but now, she couldn’t even manage a half-smile. She reached up and took off the hair clip, staying at the playground for no more than five minutes.
The noisy music in her ears only made her feel irritable. Song Wenzhi bypassed the crowd and walked onto a small path. The streetlights overhead were very dim, much like her current suppressed emotions. Song Wenzhi couldn’t help but think: Why?
As long as Yu Kunian sent a message, she could accept any reason.
But the phone remained silent—no explanation, let alone an apology.
Song Wenzhi regretted it. She wondered if she had gotten too ahead of herself, truly believing that Yu Kunian was seriously pursuing her. In reality, she was just an ordinary Omega, perhaps not even comparable to the Omega employees within Zhaoming Biotech, yet she actually had such expectations.
For Yu Kunian, the best choice was never her.
Returning to her apartment somewhat out of sorts, Song Wenzhi didn’t turn on the lights. She sank into the sofa, her fair fingertips repeatedly stroking the hair clip. Unbeknownst to her, her breathing was trembling slightly.
The phone vibrated several times without her noticing. Startled by the ringtone, Song Wenzhi took out her phone. Seeing the name “Wei Chi” displayed on the screen, disappointment once again flickered through her eyes.
“Xiao Zhi,” Xia Weichi’s voice rang out the moment the call connected, her tone full of concern. “Did something happen? I saw you haven’t replied to my messages, and I remembered you didn’t have classes tonight, so I was a bit worried something happened to you.”
Song Wenzhi said, “I’m fine.”
Xia Weichi said, “Your voice sounds a bit off. Is it because you haven’t taken your medicine today? It’s been exactly half a month.”
Only then did Song Wenzhi remember. She stumbled to her feet and accidentally bumped her hand. Her breath caught instantly, and she reflexively suppressed her voice, but she soon heard Xia Weichi ask, “What’s wrong?”
Song Wenzhi shook her head but couldn’t make a sound. She reached out to turn on the light, and after recovering her senses, she feigned normalcy and answered, “I’m looking for the medicine.”
Under the light, the back of her hand was clearly red over a large area. The persistent, sharp pain made it impossible for her to calm down immediately, so Song Wenzhi said to Xia Weichi, “I found it, I’m hanging up now.”
Xia Weichi seemed to sense something and asked, “Xiao Zhi, are you feeling unwell again?”
Song Wenzhi breathed softly, “No, don’t worry.”
Xia Weichi sighed. “I’ll try to come back to the country as early as possible. There have been so many things lately, I’m sorry, Xiao Zhi. I should have been back already, I didn’t expect to be delayed, otherwise I should have been with you today.”
Song Wenzhi gave an “Mm” and then hurriedly hung up after saying “It’s okay.” She stood in place, and the touch of her warm fingertips on the bumped hand seemed to make it hurt even more.
The Omega thought to herself: Is she a bit unlucky today?
After taking the medicine on the table, Song Wenzhi sat back down. She stared blankly at the notebook she used to tutor Yu Kunian.
What does all of this even mean?
After an unknown amount of time, another call rang out in the silence. It was an unknown number. Song Wenzhi hesitated for a long time before answering. Before she could speak, a familiar voice came from the other end, the tone extremely anxious:
“Teacher Song—”
