The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 10
She was greedy, but she was also sensible enough.
Song Wenzhi paused for a moment and quickly explained, “I didn’t mean it that way.”
Yu Kunian smiled and said, “I know, Professor Song.” Having said that, she turned her head to look at the rain, which was falling harder and harder, and added:
“Professor Song is not my employee, and tutoring is not an urgent project; it can be postponed for a day at any time, it’s no problem. To me, Professor Song is the exception to everything. Besides, I am the pursuer; I shouldn’t let you get more exhausted, otherwise my sin would be too great.”
Song Wenzhi unconsciously tightened her grip on her phone. She followed Yu Kunian’s gaze; truthfully, she didn’t find the rainy day that troublesome. Both dinner and tutoring were indoors; the only issue was that the journey might be a bit miserable.
She had no reason to refuse Yu Kunian, but she had always been strict with herself and was used to following a disciplined routine. Facing Yu Kunian’s highly variable arrangements, she felt out of her element.
The sound of rain in her ears was noisy and clattering. Song Wenzhi turned back to meet Yu Kunian’s smiling gaze. She nodded slightly and said, “Tomorrow I will make up for the time owed today.”
Unexpectedly, Yu Kunian said, “Nothing is owed today, Professor Song.”
Song Wenzhi asked, “Why?”
“Because of my uninvited arrival, the hour at noon today already counts as today’s tutoring.” Yu Kunian knit her brows slightly. When she left the school in the morning, she had realized the impropriety of her behavior, and her voice lowered a few notches. “I wanted to see you, but I disrupted your schedule, Professor Song. If I caused you to have an hour of your time taken away for no reason, I would feel very sorry.”
At noon, neither of them had realized anything was wrong. Yu Kunian thought she had seized the moment to get closer to Song Wenzhi, but in hindsight, she realized that Song Wenzhi was very busy.
In the AO Union Academy, the topic of Song Wenzhi being a dedicated professor who worked like a spinning top on weekdays was known to everyone. Even on weekends, Song Wenzhi would still be working within the academy. She did her best to handle everything and simply couldn’t find time to catch her breath.
—And yet, she had selfishly made Song Wenzhi draw out rare free time just because of her own whim.
Song Wenzhi had not noticed this, or perhaps she was simply used to being busy. Even without Yu Kunian’s arrival, she would have had other things to do. So when she heard what Yu Kunian said, her eyelashes trembled slightly; she wanted to speak but only opened her mouth without making a sound.
She was not good at accepting apologies, but also because Yu Kunian’s arrival was an important matter for which she was willing to specifically set aside time, she didn’t think Yu Kunian needed to apologize. But since Yu Kunian had already said so, she didn’t want to over-explain. She had many thoughts in her heart, but in the end, she only said the word, “Okay.”
Yu Kunian held the umbrella over both their heads. “I’ll see you back, Professor Song.”
She only brought one umbrella; or rather, she had specifically taken only one.
Song Wenzhi naturally wouldn’t refuse her, but as they walked side-by-side to where Yu Kunian had parked her car, Song Wenzhi looked at Yu Kunian’s other shoulder and hair, which were already soaked. She refused Yu Kunian’s request to drive her to the door of the apartment building.
“I will return the umbrella to you tomorrow, President Yu,” Song Wenzhi reached out, intending to take the umbrella. She figured that the place where Yu Kunian lived surely had an underground garage and she wouldn’t have another chance to get wet. “I can go back by myself.”
Yu Kunian’s movement to open the car door paused. “Professor Song, it’s no trouble for me.” She thought Song Wenzhi was worried about bothering her and spoke as she tightened her grip on the umbrella handle.
But Song Wenzhi shook her head, though she didn’t mention it was because of Yu Kunian’s soaked shoulder. She shifted her gaze and simply said, “It’s not very far from the apartment.”
“If you walk back, you’ll still get wet even with an umbrella, Professor Song.”
“I’ll be careful, and I have this jacket.”
“…The jacket is a bit thin.” Yu Kunian hadn’t expected the jacket she brought to become an obstacle now, and a hint of helplessness inevitably flickered in her eyes.
Song Wenzhi looked at her, her lips slightly pursed. She remembered there was a very narrow path at the entrance of the staff apartments where cars couldn’t enter; one could only walk, and Yu Kunian would definitely insist on walking her right to her door. After only a few seconds of thought, Song Wenzhi became even more firm in her decision. So, she repeated again, “No need, President Yu.”
Song Wenzhi’s emotions were never detectable from her face. Her expression was always faint, with her brows knit into a slight arc. Yu Kunian didn’t speak immediately; she was trying to judge if Song Wenzhi was angry.
Yu Kunian didn’t dare to be too forceful. Now that she wanted to pursue Song Wenzhi, she couldn’t follow the mindset of “President Yu.” Thus, she finally conceded and nodded, saying, “Alright, I’ll listen to you, Professor Song.”
Song Wenzhi was finally satisfied. She gave an “um” and was about to turn and leave. Yu Kunian didn’t even have time to speak again before seeing Song Wenzhi already stepping in the other direction. For a moment, she leaned toward Song Wenzhi’s direction and instinctively reached out, grabbing Song Wenzhi’s fingertips.
“Professor Song, wait.” Her words followed her actions.
Song Wenzhi stopped her pace and turned back, but her gaze first fell on Yu Kunian’s hand holding hers. Then, she swiftly pulled it away, lifted her eyes, and asked, “What is it?”
Yu Kunian’s hand froze in mid-air for a moment before she withdrew it. She hurriedly turned back to open the car door and took out a medium-sized wooden food bag. The logo printed on it was beautiful, even decorated with black silk ribbons cut into swallowtail shapes. Song Wenzhi recognized it as an Italian restaurant in Lihua City that wasn’t necessarily available even if one booked two months in advance.
Yu Kunian handed it to Song Wenzhi. “It would be quite late to cook after you get back, and Professor Song is very tired today, so I prepared dinner. I picked a few signature dishes; if there’s anything you don’t like, please be sure to tell me.”
“President Yu…” Song Wenzhi hadn’t expected that despite the sudden rainstorm, this pre-prepared dinner was not affected, except that they wouldn’t be eating it together.
Fearing she would refuse, Yu Kunian didn’t wait for her to finish before saying, “It’s neither a hassle nor expensive. The dishes were already selected, and it would be a bit of a waste of the reservation not to eat them. I haven’t eaten at this restaurant many times myself; I’d like to ask Professor Song to do me the honor of critiquing it to see if it’s worth me inviting you there in the future?”
Song Wenzhi fell silent for a long time. Although she had indeed thought that given Yu Kunian’s status, her pursuit of someone wouldn’t be low-key, she couldn’t immediately adapt to Yu Kunian truly being so generous. She felt it was strange, as if she were entering a social class that didn’t belong to her.
However, for Yu Kunian, those things were merely a common part of life; it wasn’t as if Yu Kunian would arrange things based on her own economic level. Song Wenzhi gave a quiet, invisible sigh. If they continued to stand in a stalemate in the storm, she feared that not just the dinner, but both of them would catch a cold.
But after taking the food bag, she remembered something and spoke up again: “President Yu, I accept your request from this morning.” Having said that, she wanted to leave, but she still added a supplement: “Let’s eat at the cafeteria.”
The so-called request was what Yu Kunian had said about whether she could have breakfast with Song Wenzhi in the future. Originally, Song Wenzhi had planned to consider it further, but because of Yu Kunian’s actions, she felt she didn’t need to think about it anymore.
She couldn’t temporarily accept Yu Kunian spending such high costs on gifts for her, so she would simply give Yu Kunian no more opportunities to send them. Eating at the cafeteria together wasn’t bad; at least she was quite willing to do that.
By the time Yu Kunian reacted, Song Wenzhi had already walked quite far away. Yu Kunian felt a bit caught between laughter and tears. She looked at Song Wenzhi’s back and thought she might have miscalculated; for some reason, Song Wenzhi didn’t seem that surprised.
Yu Kunian was a bit troubled. Clearly, the pursuit strategies she had read taught it this way, but why did it seem a bit off when applied to Song Wenzhi?
Returning to the car, Yu Kunian felt a bit gloomy. She had no experience pursuing people, and neither did those around her. Feeling her thoughts being led by someone else for the first time felt strange to her.
At the company, it was always others who looked at her, Yu Kunian’s, face for cues; she had never been the one to analyze someone else’s expression. For instance, even now, she was still wondering if Song Wenzhi was angry.
She opened her phone wanting to send a message to Song Wenzhi, but after typing and deleting a few words, she didn’t know how to start the inquiry. Accompanied by the noisy sound of rain in her ears, she raised a hand to her brow and, in the end, sent nothing.
Ten minutes later, she started the car and left Lihua University.
Yu Kunian didn’t know that after returning to her apartment and opening that dinner, Song Wenzhi was equally troubled. The dinner was delicious, and she liked every part of it, but the more she felt it was good, the more Song Wenzhi could perceive the gap between them.
Who was Yu Kunian?
The Yu family had served on government committees for generations. It could be said that their status in Lihua City was pivotal. No matter who it was from the Yu family, countless people wanted to establish a connection with them; a single helping hand could allow one to cross class boundaries and establish oneself. Not to mention Yu Kunian, who had built Zhaoming Bio into a powerhouse on her own—no one didn’t know her name, and backed by the Yu family, there were even more people who wanted to cling to this “high branch.”
Lihua City appeared to be all-encompassing, but in reality, classes were clearly defined. Everyone wanted to climb up, but not everyone could stand out. The members of the committee were each excellent and outstanding—the top-tier talents and the behind-the-scenes controllers of the lifeblood of Lihua City. Yu Kunian’s future Omega should be chosen from among them.
Therefore, regarding Yu Kunian pursuing her, she had always considered it nonsense. It might just be a passing whim of Yu Kunian’s. She was just an ordinary person who didn’t even have the chance to squeeze into the Yu family’s circle.
But she still inevitably had thoughts because of Yu Kunian’s behavior. She was greedy, but she was also sensible. She could wait, wait until Yu Kunian got bored and turned to leave, and then extract herself from all of this. She couldn’t owe Yu Kunian too much. At the very least, right now, she could enjoy Yu Kunian’s special treatment and experience Yu Kunian’s brief pursuit—that was enough.
Song Wenzhi ate this dinner very slowly. She was “critiquing” it as Yu Kunian had suggested, though she wasn’t critiquing the taste, but rather Yu Kunian’s intentions. It wasn’t until Yu Kunian asked her for an evaluation of the dishes that Song Wenzhi finally finished this unusual dinner, though she found herself at a loss for what to reply.
