The Pursuit of Love After Divorcing My Cold Omega - Chapter 1
“Hello, Can We Get to Know Each Other?”
As September approached, the summer in Lihua City was finally beginning to fade. These past few days hadn’t been as sweltering as those before; the temperature wasn’t dropping rapidly, but the breeze felt just right comfortable and refreshing.
A few days before the start of the semester at Lihua University, the campus was gradually becoming lively. At dusk, the snack street opposite the South Gate finally grew noisy again. Scents drifted continuously into the campus, and students who had arrived early headed straight for the food in groups of twos and threes.
Yu Kunian’s car drove toward the South Gate. A security guard standing outside the booth stopped her and asked if she was a teacher at the school.
“No,” Yu Kunian replied, rolling down the window. The phone placed beside her was mid-call. Seeing that she was an outsider, the guard turned around to grab the registration form.
On the other end of the line, an older woman was still speaking: “Niannian, be a bit more polite when you meet them later.”
Yu Kunian gave a casual “mm,” seemingly not taking the words to heart at all. She tilted her head to take the registration form from the guard and lowered her eyes expressionlessly. As she wrote, she seemed to sense that the other party was dissatisfied with her response, so she lazily added, “I know.”
The evening glow of the sunset shone through half the car window toward Yu Kunian. From an outside perspective, her originally raven-black hair seemed to be plated with a layer of gold; even her usually sharp facial features appeared somewhat softened.
She wrote quickly. The three characters for “Yu Kunian” were written elegantly and beautifully. It was only when the guard took back the registration form that he saw her face clearly.
She had a pair of amber eyes, the corners of which tilted upward slightly, with standard double eyelids. Even when the corners of her mouth were turned down, she still gave off an impression of wearing a faint smile.
Looking at the name on the form, the guard seemed somewhat surprised, but he reacted quickly and called out, “President Yu?”
“Can I go in now?” Yu Kunian nodded, having no intention of chatting further, and asked in return.
The guard nodded hurriedly. “Of course, of course.”
She raised her hand to adjust her glasses frames and tucked her curls—which were resting against her thin, blue-green sweater—behind her ear. With a slight nod, she continued driving into Lihua University under the guard’s watchful gaze.
Yu Kunian’s eyesight had always been excellent, and she never wore glasses. Today, however, she was wearing a pair without lenses, which clearly made her a bit uncomfortable. This was only because the person she was currently talking to had said that wearing a pair of glasses could mask some of the subtle “ruffian” aura she carried—though Yu Kunian never felt she had such aura.
Within Lihua City, Yu Kunian’s name was quite well-known.
In Yu Kunian’s family, three consecutive generations of direct relatives had been officials in the Alpha-Omega Union Government, holding pivotal positions in the Alpha and Omega Committees of Lihua City.
One could say that Yu Kunian’s family members seemed to have conducted a massive series of political marriages within the AO Union Committee. Under conditions where pheromones matched, it was very easy for them to form a family.
Yu Kunian didn’t think they deeply loved each other. On the contrary, what she often saw was them facing their partners with a polite, distant attitude that remained the same as how they treated their colleagues.
To them, work and life operated in the exact same mode.
Theoretically, Yu Kunian should have been duplicate just like them. After all, the Yu family’s teachings had always been thus—there was no talk of feelings, only the utility of marriage.
That is, realizing the value of marriage through political unions.
This was also why Yu Kunian came to Lihua University today. She had been nagging for nearly a month about a “suitable” marriage partner. She was told that if their pheromones matched, they should get to know each other as quickly as possible and discuss marriage.
However, Yu Kunian was unexpectedly unlike anyone else in her family.
Before her secondary differentiation, Yu Kunian had been obedient to all family arrangements and decisions. But that obedience seemed to make the Alpha-differentiated Yu Kunian exponentially rebellious. In the words of her family, she was “unconventional and straying from the path.”
The road that had been paved for her in advance was one she never even looked at; she insisted on going in the opposite direction.
Despite being indoctrinated with various ideologies regarding the AO Committee since childhood, Yu Kunian did not test into the Committee for work after graduation. Instead, she started her own company—Zhaoming Biotech. In the first few years, her company’s profits were consistently negative. If it weren’t for her family’s continuous financial support, the company would likely have gone bankrupt long ago.
However, just two years ago, the Alpha-Omega Union Government promulgated new regulations. Several projects involving R&D for emergency situations in Alpha-Omega cohabitation happened to align perfectly with her company’s research direction.
Zhaoming Biotech’s research has always been based on pheromones. Whether for Omegas or Alphas, she had corresponding project teams, and the goal of her products was based on AO coexistence. Yu Kunian’s foresight preceded the government, but it also made her the first entrepreneur capable of responding immediately after the Union Government issued its statement.
Zhaoming Biotech became famous overnight. All problems were solved as the company transformed from an obscure small business into a pioneer of AO coexistence research. Its strength was obvious to all.
But beyond that, Yu Kunian’s courage was rare. Even if she had told other bosses about her ideas, few would have dared to try. After all, no one wanted to spend years of time and energy waiting for an uncertain opportunity while in the red.
The success of the first project made Yu Kunian a household name. Her products achieved almost full coverage within the city, and those who knew of her called her “President Yu.”
At the same time, Zhaoming Biotech became profitable. Not only did she pay off all debts, but she also earned enough for Yu Kunian to return all the capital her family had given her in the form of equivalent shares.
However, they didn’t accept the money. Instead, using the reason that they had spared no effort in supporting her company, they made it so Yu Kunian couldn’t completely refuse her family’s requests, whether they used soft or hard tactics.
Therefore, even though Yu Kunian wanted to choose her own partner now, she had to come and meet this so-called marriage prospect.
Yu Kunian wasn’t happy about it. She disliked the feeling of being controlled. Even if she were to choose an Omega to marry at random, she wanted it to be her own decision.
Marriage is for the maximization of benefits—this phrase had already given Yu Kunian calluses on her ears. Since she currently didn’t work for the government, her Alpha mother changed strategies, picking an Omega daughter of a noble family who could provide permanent future financial support for her company.
She heard the other party had a distinguished family background and managed a large group in another city. Now looking to develop in Lihua City, she was a “hot commodity.” Yu Kunian was too lazy to look at the details; she wasn’t interested anyway.
Today, Omega had followed her mother to stop by Lihua University, so Yu Kunian was ordered to come for a meeting.
The person on the other end of the phone was still giving incessant instructions. Yu Kunian responded occasionally. Once she found a spot and parked the car, she asked, “Which building?”
“Mingjing Building, Office 1003.” Sensing her perfunctoriness, her Omega mother added: “Be serious. Don’t go see her with that lazy attitude you usually have. At the very least, her mother will be there. Give them a good first impression.”
Hearing this, Yu Kunian curled her lips and laughed, retorting half-jokingly: “What’s wrong with me usually? The few Omegas in my company all admire me. Two weeks ago, an Omega even boldly confessed their love to me. Unfortunately, they weren’t my type.”
“If you aren’t serious, you can only attract those without background. Niannian, you must be responsible for yourself. This one I’ve chosen for you is well-behaved, sensible, and understanding. For you, she is an excellent marriage partner.”
The voice in the receiver was slightly distorted, but it didn’t stop the tone of reproach and displeasure from being crystal clear. The smile on Yu Kunian’s face faded. Her brow furrowed slightly as she looked up at the Mingjing Building before her, a hint of annoyance surfacing in her eyes.
“Mm, I’m here. Hanging up.”
She hated the words “well-behaved, sensible, and understanding” the most.
Taking the elevator to the tenth floor, she found Office 1003. Yu Kunian knocked and entered, seeing only an older Alpha inside.
The other party stood to greet her. After introducing themselves, she heard the woman say apologetically, “We agreed to meet today, but she suddenly felt unwell and had to head back first. It happened so suddenly that there wasn’t time to notify you. I’m sorry for making you come for nothing. I’ll have her schedule another time with you.”
Yu Kunian hadn’t expected this blind date to end so quickly, and she hadn’t even seen the Omega her mother praised so highly. As for the so-called “unwell” excuse, it was a bit clumsy, but it suited her perfectly.
Suddenly, Yu Kunian’s mood brightened. She even planned to walk around the campus before leaving.
Dialing her mother’s number, Yu Kunian happened to see an empty piano room with the door open. Inside was a grand piano. Yu Kunian turned and walked in, feeling in the mood to sit on the piano bench and play a piece.
The call connected. Yu Kunian said: “That Omega you took a fancy to left early. Didn’t see her.”
The other side fell silent. Yu Kunian’s smile widened. She happily lifted the piano lid, recalled a score she could remember, and began to play casually.
Thanks to her mother, she had been forced to learn piano for many years as a child. Although she hadn’t touched it in a long time, she could still “perform” through muscle memory.
However, before she had played for long, a voice suddenly came from the phone: “You hit a wrong note.”
The piano music stopped abruptly. Yu Kunian’s hands hovered over the keys for a long time, her fingertips twitching slightly. Then she heard the other person say: “Niannian, it’s been too long since you practiced. Remember to keep it up. That kind of mistake shouldn’t happen to you.”
“What help does practicing piano give my career?” Yu Kunian suddenly lost interest and replied impatiently.
The other party seemed choked up but was used to Yu Kunian being like this. She simply said calmly: “Niannian, you make me worry. You should be obedient. I will arrange another time for you to meet. Wait for my arrangements.”
Yu Kunian didn’t reply. She got up to leave; anyway, today’s blind date failing was a good thing. As for what came next, she’d deal with it later.
She had to find a way to make this whole thing fail completely, otherwise, she would have no peace in the future.
Just as the call was about to end, and when Yu Kunian was one step away from leaving the piano room, someone brushed past her. A fresh breeze wafted past the tip of Yu Kunian’s nose. The other person’s hair seemed to brush against the back of her raised hand, unexpectedly making Yu Kunian stop in her tracks.
After a moment of daze, Yu Kunian snapped out of it and turned to look. That person seemed not to have noticed her at all and began to play the piano that had only just fallen silent.
Yu Kunian’s gaze first landed on the other’s hands, pressing the keys, then slowly moved up to the side of her face.
She looked a bit familiar, but for her life, Yu Kunian couldn’t remember if it was someone she knew.
The piano music entered her ears. The person on the phone said: “You played well this time.”
“It wasn’t me,” Yu Kunian said as if waking from a dream. “Hanging up.”
Staring at the other’s figure, Yu Kunian stood still for a long time. The window beside them was open, and a gust of wind blew in, lifting the long, straight black hair of Song Wenzhi, who was playing the piano.
She didn’t know how long she watched before a ripple stirred in her heart. Yu Kunian slowly approached her. “Hello.”
Song Wenzhi seemed to nod yet also seemed to give no response. Only the echoing piano notes remained in their ears. Yu Kunian looked down at her, a smile slowly reaching the depths of her eyes as she spoke again without minding the silence:
“I’d like to get to know you. Could I have your contact information?”
As a famous Alpha in Lihua City, Yu Kunian wasn’t lying—she indeed had many Omega pursuers, but she had never been in a relationship. To be honest, even she didn’t know what her ideal type was.
However, President Yu, who usually only did the rejecting, was rejected ruthlessly for the first time in her life.
“I’m sorry.” Song Wenzhi didn’t even spare her a glance. She only expressed her refusal politely, without giving a reason.
She seemed very focused on finishing the current piece. Song Wenzhi’s back was very straight, and her posture was so good it was pleasing to the eye. Yu Kunian’s light chuckle sounded somewhat abrupt amidst the music: “Just now, it seems you hit a wrong note.”
As soon as the words fell, a few more mistakes followed in the subsequent notes.
Song Wenzhi’s expression was as motionless as usual. Looking at her alone, she did indeed coldly refuse Yu Kunian’s approach. But precisely because her heartstrings had been momentarily ruffled by Yu Kunian, a flaw was revealed through the piano music.
Song Wenzhi stopped her hands, trying to ignore Yu Kunian’s burning gaze.
A phone ringtone sounded timely. Song Wenzhi’s breath hitched. She stood up to answer the call, nodding slightly to Yu Kunian with a calm face before walking past her.
The contact info wasn’t obtained. Song Wenzhi’s back didn’t look defeated, but it carried a sense of escape.
A somewhat strange aloofness was Yu Kunian’s first impression of Song Wenzhi.
Yu Kunian followed Song Wenzhi’s pace out. She could only see the hurriedly departing Omega subconsciously look back, happening to lock eyes with Yu Kunian.
The moment their gazes met, Yu Kunian smiled.
Song Wenzhi, however, quickly turned her head back. She didn’t notice that Yu Kunian behind her had taken out a phone and quietly snapped a photo of her back.
Hair bloomed like a flower, and the lingering fragrance seemed to stay permanently at the tip of Yu Kunian’s nose. Song Wenzhi’s figure in the photo was a bit blurry, yet she still felt special.
