- Chapter 6 - Sudden Intimacy
Su Xi let Duan Cheng lead him away. Outside, the sky had turned a heavy, bruised black. A howling wind bent fragile branches to their breaking point. Once inside the dormitory, they didn’t turn on the lights; the room was pitch black. Su Xi’s lashes fluttered as he sobbed quietly, biting his lip to keep from making a sound.
Tears clung to his dark lashes. He couldn’t help but feel a pang of genuine sadness.
Suddenly, the lights flickered on, flooding the room. Duan Cheng turned back to see Su Xi standing there, head bowed and uncharacteristically quiet. Feeling a flash of panic, Duan Cheng reached out to tilt the youth’s chin up, only to meet a pair of watery, sorrowful eyes.
“Why are you crying? Does it hurt that much?” Duan Cheng thought the boy was far too delicate, but when he saw the stark red marks on his wrist, he fell silent for a few seconds. He reached out to wipe the tears from the corners of Su Xi’s eyes and whispered, “Stop crying.”
I’ll stop crying if you just increase the Salvation Value already…
Su Xi lowered his eyes to hide his thoughts and nodded obediently, trying to stifle his sobs. But the pain in his wrist was hard to ignore; as he sat on the sofa while Duan Cheng applied medicine, he couldn’t stop his body from trembling slightly.
The milky ointment turned transparent and slippery as it was spread with a cotton swab, making his skin glisten under the light. Su Xi tried to pull his hand back slightly, but Duan Cheng held it firmly with an air of authority.
“It hurts… blow on it for me,” Su Xi whispered, pouting.
He expected Duan Cheng to refuse given the current Salvation level, but the man merely paused for two seconds before lifting Su Xi’s hand and blowing gently. The cool air hitting the wound brought a slight, ticklish sensation.
It took half an hour for Duan Cheng to finish. While such a mark would have faded quickly on a normal person, Su Xi was an Omega, sensitive to both pain and touch. By the time they were done, rain had begun to lash against the balcony glass.
The pink-white lychee roses Su Xi had bought previously were now drooping under the rain, looking as if they might wither away in the wind.
Glancing back at the youth who had drifted into a deep sleep, Duan Cheng let out a barely audible sigh.
Su Xi woke up to the sound of repeated system notifications about the Salvation Value rising. He initially thought it was a dream.
When he opened his eyes, he stared at the unfamiliar ceiling in a daze. The only light in the room came from a warm yellow bedside lamp. He was alone.
Memories flooded back, he had been so exhausted while Duan Cheng was treating his wrist that he had fallen asleep.
“Where’s Duan Cheng?” Su Xi asked the system.
“He left about half an hour ago. It looks like he just got back from the supermarket,” System 1368 replied instantly.
“I knew it. He didn’t eat lunch; he must be hungry.” Su Xi was still thinking about the unfinished meal from earlier. He pushed himself up with his sore arms and grabbed a glass of water. Just as he was about to pour a second, the door opened.
Duan Cheng walked in carrying several plastic bags. After changing his shoes, he noticed Su Xi was awake.
“It’s raining outside,” Su Xi murmured, watching the water droplets on the man’s hair.
Duan Cheng placed the bags on the coffee table. Su Xi caught a glimpse of the contents, various candies and snacks. Su Xi’s eyes lit up with surprise. The villain’s profile mentioned nothing about a love for sweets. Are these for me?
“You don’t like them?” Duan Cheng asked, noticing his wide eyes.
“No, no! I love them!” Feeling hungry, Su Xi pulled a bag toward him and tore open some gummies. “Aren’t you eating?”
“I don’t like snacks.” Duan Cheng leaned over to clear the cluttered table before sitting down. He never understood the appeal of these cloyingly sweet things, but watching Su Xi eat made him want to try.
He picked up a pink gummy Su Xi had set aside. It was peach-flavored, excessively sweet, almost sickeningly so.
Su Xi ate happily, opening whatever he wanted. He finished the tomato chips and reached for the blueberry cheese crackers in front of Duan Cheng. Just as his fingers were about to touch them, the crackers were pulled away.
“My crackers…” he protested.
Duan Cheng pursed his lips. “Eating too many snacks will give you a stomach ache. I’ll put these away for you to eat tomorrow.”
“Tonz (System), is he this attentive now that the Salvation Value is at 20?” Su Xi watched Duan Cheng tidying up the mess and felt a bit impressed.
The system let out a cold, mechanical chuckle. “Maybe he’s just faking it.”
“Then I should be even nicer to him?” Su Xi stared at the polished tabletop as the sound of rain intensified. He let out a yawn, feeling sleepy again.
“It’s raining hard and it’s late. Stay here tonight,” Duan Cheng said, pulling a set of bedding from the closet. “I’ll sleep on the sofa.”
“No, let’s sleep together.” Su Xi looked at the bed. It wasn’t very wide; if they slept together, they would be pressed close. It was a perfect chance to bridge the distance.
However, he was firmly rejected. Duan Cheng said they weren’t “officially” together yet, and the bed would be too cramped and uncomfortable for two.
The next morning, the summer rain was even more intense. Su Xi crawled out of bed, his hair messy and clothes disheveled. He rubbed his eyes and looked toward the sofa, but Duan Cheng was gone.
The sound of running water came from the bathroom. He hesitated, then crept over. Through the slightly ajar door, he saw Duan Cheng shirtless, wearing only dark blue trousers standing before the mirror.
Su Xi froze, realizing he was intruding, and turned to leave.
But a hand suddenly grabbed his collar and pulled him into the bathroom. The cold, crisp scent of Duan Cheng filled his senses. “Duan Cheng, you’re up so early…”
“It’s 9:00 AM.” Duan Cheng took out a new toothbrush, rinsed it with hot water, applied toothpaste, and handed it to Su Xi. “It’s the weekend, no classes. What do you want for breakfast? I’ll go buy it.”
Su Xi, mouth full of minty foam, rinsed and spat before answering: “I want shaomai and custard buns.”
Duan Cheng nodded and left shortly after.
“Tonz! Was Duan Cheng just seducing me?” Su Xi asked the system urgently.
“Is being dressed like that normal? Does it count as seduction?” 1368 checked its database before confirming, “Yes, Host. He was definitely seducing you.”
Su Xi pondered this while wandering around the dorm. His eyes landed on a leather-bound notebook sitting on the desk. Curiosity got the better of him. He checked the door to ensure Duan Cheng hadn’t returned, then carefully opened it.
On the title page, there was a large red ‘X’. Underneath the ink, Su Xi could make out two words: his own name.
His heart hammered against his ribs. He turned the page.
July 12, Sunny
He came again. He brought more people this time. He must really hate me. He stands there, high and mighty, he doesn’t even need to lift a finger; people rush to “fix” me for him.
July 18, Rain
During the mecha simulation class, the OS suddenly malfunctioned. I know it was his doing. But I’m just an ordinary Beta with the title of his fiancé. What can I do?
August 1, Overcast
Why did he suddenly come to help me? Has he thought of a new way to torment me?
Su Xi felt a chill as he read further. The handwriting became more cursive and wilder. He could almost feel the owner’s shifting emotions. Why would something this private be left out in the open?
“Is he doing this on purpose…?” Suddenly, he heard rhythmic footsteps in the hallway. He scrambled to close the notebook and hide it behind him just as the door clicked open. Duan Cheng walked in with breakfast, glancing at him briefly before setting the food down.
“Come eat.” Duan Cheng placed a bottle of milk with a straw next to the shaomai.
Su Xi sat on the sofa, picking at his food, his eyes darting toward Duan Cheng. When the man moved toward the desk, Su Xi stood up abruptly.
“What’s wrong?” Duan Cheng asked, turning around.
Su Xi nearly choked on a bite of shaomai. He gulped down some milk and blurted out, “I just remembered something. I have to go!”
He tried to walk past Duan Cheng toward the door, keeping a safe distance. He reached for the handle, but the door was slammed shut by a firm hand. He looked up into Duan Cheng’s dark, unreadable eyes.
“What are you doing?” Su Xi frowned.
Duan Cheng locked the door. “Did you touch my things just now?”
“No! Why would I?” Su Xi lowered his head, his previous bravado extinguished by a wave of guilt.
