- Chapter 4 - Neither Canceling the Engagement nor Marking is Allowed
Su Xi snapped back to reality and realized he had been staring. His ears turned a sudden shade of crimson, and he wished he could dig a hole in the floor to hide in. In his panic, he even forgot to take the bag of candy and bolted out of the restroom.
He wandered aimlessly around the school, eventually finding a bench to rest on. Notifications flashed continuously on his communicator, but a quick glance at the names was enough for him to ignore them. He looked up at the azure sky and let out a helpless sigh.
(Congratulations, Host! Villain Salvation Value has reached 5.)
Su Xi, who was half-leaning against the wooden bench, sat bolt upright. He looked around in confusion but saw no sign of Duan Cheng. “System, what happened? Is there a bug?”
“No bug, it really increased! And by a lot at once!” System 1368’s mechanical voice sounded genuinely excited. Although it was only five points, it was progress the goal of one hundred felt a little closer.
“So… Duan Cheng needs stimulation to increase his favorability and growth?” Su Xi pondered for a moment before reaching this conclusion.
When he was just being nice to Duan Cheng one-on-one, the numbers didn’t move. But when others were watching, Duan Cheng not only took initiative but also became more talkative. Once the crowd thinned, he went back to being silent.
Testing this theory the next day, Su Xi specifically had the original host’s family send several luxury items to the school. He woke up early to study the villain’s preferences and even hand-made a “heart-themed” breakfast, packed carefully in an insulated bag.
Timing it perfectly with Duan Cheng’s library study schedule, Su Xi went up to the second floor and spotted him at his usual window seat. Thanks to Su Xi’s “threats” from the day before telling everyone he had found a better way to torment Duan Cheng and they shouldn’t interfere with his “plaything” no one was currently bothering him.
Since it was early, the library was quiet. Su Xi picked a few books with pretty covers and sat directly across from Duan Cheng. He placed the insulated bag on the empty space to the man’s right, wrote a note, and stuck it on the book he pushed toward him.
Duan Cheng knew it was Su Xi the moment he walked over. When Duan Cheng didn’t move, Su Xi wrote a second note and stuck it on top. The handwriting was neat and beautiful. Duan Cheng glanced at it, then looked up to meet Su Xi’s smiling eyes.
“Eat something,” Su Xi whispered, his voice as soft as a breeze.
Duan Cheng looked at the bear-patterned insulated bag. Su Xi unzipped it to reveal delicate sandwiches, orange juice, and a container of blueberries.
“I made it myself,” Su Xi said, mentally calculating the time. The “crowd” he expected should be arriving soon. Seeing Duan Cheng remain unresponsive, Su Xi held out his hand which had a small bandage on the finger and said aggrievedly, “I accidentally cut myself making this. Just try it.”
Duan Cheng remained silent for a long moment before saying, “No eating in the library.”
“What does that matter?” Su Xi propped his chin on his hand, looking at him. “My family donated this library. If I say we can eat, we can eat. Besides, no one is here yet.”
“I didn’t poison it, I promise,” Su Xi added, physically pulling Duan Cheng’s book away and replacing it with the food.
Three minutes later, as Su Xi watched him slowly eat, more students began to trickle in. Su Xi waited for the system’s notification, but two more minutes passed with nothing.
“What’s wrong?” he wondered.
Just as he was getting discouraged, the notification finally arrived. The increase in Salvation Value was exactly as he expected.
Su Xi looked up at Duan Cheng, but his smile faltered when he saw Fu Heng walk over. The protagonist sat down just two seats away, carrying several thick books.
“How does it taste?” Su Xi forced himself to talk to Duan Cheng while trying to figure out how to “break up” with Fu Heng without breaking his character setting as an obsessed pursuer.
“Average,” Duan Cheng replied, packing up his things to leave.
“Duan” Su Xi tried to follow him, but Fu Heng suddenly reached out and grabbed his wrist. Su Xi tried to pull away, but he was no match for the protagonist’s strength.
“I have something to say to you,” Fu Heng said softly, his fingers grazing Su Xi’s skin. Su Xi felt a shiver of unease.
“I’m busy, maybe next time,” Su Xi replied lazily.
“What’s wrong with you lately? You’re acting strange,” Fu Heng whispered, leaning in so the surrounding students couldn’t hear.
People were already secretly recording with their communicators, gossiping about the drama between Su Xi and Fu Heng. Su Xi, wanting to escape, sought help from a library staff member. The staff member, blushing under Su Xi’s gaze, stepped forward to warn Fu Heng about his disciplinary record.
As a star student, Fu Heng couldn’t afford a mark on his record. Usually, he would have let go, but he didn’t.
“System, is Fu Heng OOC?” Su Xi panicked.
“Data shows normal, but let me help you,” 1368 replied. Suddenly, a small electric shock surged through Fu Heng’s arm. He reflexively let go, and Su Xi bolted.
Su Xi ran until he was far from the library, panting under the bright sun. Suddenly, a chilled bottle of water appeared before him.
“Duan Cheng,” Su Xi said, pleasantly surprised.
“Returning the favor,” Duan Cheng said, turning to leave.
Su Xi grabbed his arm and stuffed the water back into his hand. He licked his dry lips and whispered, “Then I don’t want it.” If he drank it now, his progress for the day would be wasted.
“Su Xi, you hate me. I’ll keep my distance, but I can’t cancel the engagement,” Duan Cheng stated. This was his final test; if Su Xi’s answer was the same as before, he would never let go in the future.
“What?” Su Xi blinked. To stay in character, he held onto the man’s arm. “You’ve been ignoring me, of course I was mean! If you pay attention to me, I’ll like you.”
Liar, Duan Cheng thought, looking down at the hand on his arm. He gently pulled his arm away, unscrewed the cap, and handed the water back to Su Xi.
Su Xi was stunned. The mission seemed so easy today. It was only the third day, and Duan Cheng’s hostility seemed to have vanished, even accepting the suggestion to “try being together.”
System 1368 warned that this wasn’t quite following the script, but Su Xi talked it into submission. What better way to motivate a villain than to let them have love and then lose it?
Su Xi used his family’s influence to get Duan Cheng into a high-end simulation training room. While Duan Cheng trained inside, Su Xi lounged on the sofa in the outer room, nearly falling asleep. After three hours, the door chime rang.
Su Xi looked up and froze. Duan Cheng was covered in sweat, his hair pushed back to reveal a sharp, handsome face. His shirt clung to his body, outlining firm abdominal muscles.
Su Xi’s ears turned red, and he pointed toward the back: “The shower is there.”
“System… the villain’s body is too good,” Su Xi lamented, looking at his own fragile frame.
“Don’t be insecure, Host. You’re definitely ‘top-tier’ material for your specific role,” 1368 replied.
“…What’s the Salvation Value now?”
“7.”
“Only 7?!” Su Xi was outraged. “I made him food and gave him private training access for only 2 points?”
Duan Cheng emerged wearing only a thin bathrobe, his damp hair dripping. He sat on the sofa opposite Su Xi.
“Thirsty? Want some water?” Su Xi poured a glass and walked over. As he went to hand it to him, he “tripped,” spilling the water all over Duan Cheng’s bathrobe.
He hurriedly tried to wipe it away with a tissue, but Duan Cheng caught his hand. The next moment, Su Xi was pulled into the man’s lap. He gasped, “I didn’t mean to!”
Duan Cheng’s hand rested on Su Xi’s waist. He narrowed his eyes. “What exactly is our relationship now?”
“I don’t know…” Su Xi tried to ignore the heat. He leaned in and pressed a light, fleeting kiss against the corner of the man’s mouth.
Duan Cheng raised an eyebrow. He hadn’t expected the arrogant young master who looked down on him to expose his gland and kiss him. Was he trying to get something from him? Pity, he had nothing left.
“You can ask me for anything, I’ll try to satisfy you,” Su Xi said, seeing the man’s expression soften. “Even marking is okay.”
“I’m a Beta,” Duan Cheng said instantly. “I can’t mark you.”
