The Prosecutor Is Accustomed To Waiting For A Rabbit To Hit A Stump - Chapter 6
Chapter 6
The second time Lin Fan saw Cheng Wennuan, she drove her BMW Mini to the child’s school.
Cheng Wennuan was still wearing her school uniform, carrying a large, old backpack, bent over as if weighed down by some invisible force.
She was just a child, after all.
Other elementary school students came out in groups of two or three, but she emerged from the school gate alone. Seeing Lin Fan, she quietly and obediently walked closer before saying, “Sister Lin.”
It was genuinely heart-wrenching. Lin Fan felt a strange, inexplicable ache, as if her heart had been soaked in a jar of old vinegar.
She touched Cheng Wennuan’s head. “Are you hungry? Shall we get something to eat first?”
The little girl shook her head. “Grandma is still waiting for me to feed her.”
Truly very filial.
Lin Fan drove the little girl back to the hospital. The drive took nearly half an hour, and they encountered traffic congestion.
“How do you usually get there?”
The little girl, sitting in the passenger seat, heard Lin Fan’s question and answered seriously, “There’s a bus that goes there, but it requires a transfer and takes a long time. So, I usually walk two extra stops myself; that’s faster.”
Children from typical families were pampered, held delicately for fear of sun exposure, and kept close for fear of melting. Being picked up and dropped off at school was common, which was why traffic often jammed near schools during school hours.
Cheng Wennuan had no one to take care of her, only a grandmother who needed her care.
Lin Fan couldn’t help but recall the nurse-in-charge’s lament: A child from a poor family truly has to manage the household early.
Yet, this misfortune that had spread to the little girl—should she blame the father who was already dead, or the mother who couldn’t bear it anymore and killed her husband?
Humans, this creature, appear fragile, yet are so resilient.
But while they appear resilient, they are also incredibly vulnerable. Once the burden exceeds their own threshold, they easily break down.
What happened to Cheng Wennuan’s mother was irreversible, but Cheng Wennuan was still young and needed help.
Thinking this, and watching the little girl diligently feed the old lady, then thoughtfully wipe her face and hands, Lin Fan made a decision.
Later, while taking Cheng Wennuan to a small restaurant next to the hospital for dinner, Lin Fan casually pulled out a judicial aid application form from her bag. “Nuannuan, this is judicial aid. As long as you sign it, you can immediately receive money.”
The little girl looked at the form, then looked up at Lin Fan. A trace of hesitation flashed in her large, bright eyes, but she ultimately refused, “I still have money. I can’t take it. Many people have already helped us. The nurse sisters order food for me, the doctor uncles buy me clothes, and Sister Gu gives me money every year and is sponsoring me until university. I’ve already received a lot of help. I can’t take any more.”
The child’s voice was so young and clear, yet it almost brought tears to the eyes of Lin Fan, the cunning old hand.
How could she be so well-behaved!
How could such a beautiful flower bud bloom in such a dark past?
Lin Fan sniffled, controlling her emotions, and continued to persuade, “Nuannuan, are you a flower of the motherland?”
“Yes. The teacher says we are the flowers of the motherland, and we must grow up to be upright people, builders of the country.”
“That’s right. See, you are the flowers of the motherland, and the teachers are diligent gardeners. The motherland is the big guardian protecting you little flowers. So, if your little flower needs help now, isn’t it only right and proper for the motherland, as the big guardian, to help you? Because only when you grow strong can you, in turn, build the motherland, right?”
Lin Fan pointed to the judicial aid form. “This judicial aid is money provided by Mother Motherland to protect you, to let you grow strong. Only when you’ve truly grown up can you build the motherland and repay Mother Motherland, right?”
Cheng Wennuan thought about it, and under Lin Fan’s expectant gaze, finally nodded slowly.
Watching Cheng Wennuan take the pen and solemnly write her name stroke by stroke, Lin Fan opened her bank account and swiped through her assets.
Good heavens! If she had known this would happen, she definitely wouldn’t have bought that BMW Mini outside. Right now, the account balance was painfully clear, no need to even count the digits.
Lin Fan gritted her teeth and directly transferred more than half of her savings to Cheng Wennuan.
After taking the little girl back to the hospital and seeing the smile on her face, Lin Fan felt the fifty thousand yuan donation was worth it.
She took the judicial aid form signed with Cheng Wennuan’s name, folded it, and placed it in the inner pocket of her crossbody bag.
Sigh. She still needed to find time tomorrow to get the real judicial aid documents signed by the old lady.
She had already reported to her superior this morning. It should be approved, but a larger amount might require reporting to the Bureau Chief.
After reviewing these matters in her mind, Lin Fan felt a little hungry. She had been busy tricking the child and hadn’t eaten much.
There happened to be a highly-rated beef noodle restaurant nearby. Lin Fan swallowed, opening the navigation app.
The restaurant was right across from the hospital. Her car couldn’t enter the alley mouth, so Lin Fan had to find a parking space, park the car, and walk there.
The alley wasn’t exactly small, just a bit winding. After several twists and turns, she finally found the single-storefront beef noodle shop.
The shop was in an old building with very low eaves. The boss was busy at the entrance, and the proprietress was serving customers inside. It was already past eight, but there were still many customers inside.
Lin Fan ordered two liang of beef noodles, specifically instructing, “I want both scallions and cilantro.”
Her voice was exceptionally pleasant, like the chirping of a bird on a spring branch, but it made Gu Ye, who was sitting inside, frown.
The voice was strangely familiar. She looked up and saw the court police officer, Lin.
Gu Ye coldly averted her gaze and lowered her head to eat her noodles.
Lin Fan placed her order and walked into the shop to find a seat. Her eyes immediately spotted the aloof prosecutor among the customers, and she involuntarily held her breath.
This small, old beef noodle shop used the most ordinary tables and wooden stools. The light above was clouded with grease and wasn’t very bright.
Yet, in this environment, with the prosecutor sitting there, one could only think of four words: shedding light on a humble dwelling.
Her fingers were slender, and the way she held her chopsticks was elegant. When she lowered her head to eat the noodles, the exposed section of her neck was like white jade, smooth and beautiful.
It drew Lin Fan unconsciously towards her table. Stammering nervously, she asked, “Is… is this seat taken?”
Gu Ye was thinking about her case while eating her noodles. Hearing the “authoritative” court police officer, Lin, ask so meekly, she instinctively frowned. She coldly glanced at this colleague from the neighboring department. Recalling Court Police Lin’s character, she shook her head unhappily, her lips slightly parting to utter a single word: “Yes.”
Then, she stopped looking at her.
So cold!
Lin Fan held her breath but didn’t feel embarrassed. She mumbled an apology and sheepishly found an empty seat next to the table.
But! So stunningly cold!
Lin Fan, sitting and waiting for her noodles, couldn’t help but bite her lower lip.
Oh my god, up close, she’s truly beautiful! It wasn’t just the beauty of her features, but the aura that rushed over in that glance, making one immediately want to kneel and call her “Daddy.”
Such a person, regardless of gender, was utterly captivating.
She wanted to give her everything, willing to give her anything, wholeheartedly.
It was at this moment that Lin Fan first realized why her older sister was so obsessed with celebrity chasing.
If this prosecutor were a celebrity, she would also willingly offer the money in her pocket and the sincerity in her heart, just to earn a smile from her.
Thinking this, Lin Fan couldn’t help but secretly glance at Gu Ye again, then quickly withdrew her gaze like a pilfering mouse. She didn’t even notice that her ear tips, hidden under her hair, flushed repeatedly.
Fortunately, the steaming hot noodles were served immediately. Thin slices of beef with clear texture and bright green scallions and cilantro floated on the rich broth, with white, smooth noodles nestled underneath.
As she used her chopsticks, the beef and broth beneath the noodles surged up, and the aroma filled her nose, stimulating her appetite.
With the delicious food before her, Lin Fan began to devour it with gusto. When the bowl was empty, Lin Fan looked up, let out a breath, and sighed boyishly, “Awesome!”
Her stomach satisfied, her eyes searched for Gu Ye, only to find someone else sitting at that table. The prosecutor had finished eating and left long ago.
Feeling a slight sense of loss, Lin Fan also prepared to go home.
Before leaving, she inquired about the prosecutor with the proprietress, driven by some inexplicable impulse.
She started with small talk, then asked tangentially, “Your business is quite good, isn’t it?”
“We have to thank you all for supporting our small business,” the proprietress said with a plump, smiling face.
“Mostly regular customers?”
“Mostly regulars, but we’ve had many new customers recently. I heard our shop was promoted.”
Lin Fan nodded. “Was the lady who was at that table earlier also a regular?”
“Yes, she comes to eat several times a week. Don’t you think she’s very pretty?” The proprietress’s eyes lit up, as if she had found a kindred spirit. “When she first came a year ago, I was stunned. I thought she was some celebrity I didn’t know. Truly beautiful.”
Lin Fan got the information she wanted and nodded happily, “More beautiful than a celebrity.”
Then, she happily added the proprietress on WeChat and drove home.
She parked her car in front of a detached villa.
Inside the detached villa, Lin Fan’s older sister, Yan Han, was applying a facial mask, her beautiful nails tapping on an iPad with her slender fingers. Bored, she chatted with the vice president of her fan club. “Things seem pretty quiet recently, and the trending searches are so boring. Should we buy a trending topic for our gege (older brother/idol)?”
Her vice president was still a college student, and upon hearing her fan leader’s dangerous idea, quickly tried to extinguish it.
“Absolutely not! Absolutely not! Fan actions reflect on the idol. Your idea is very dangerous, and it would be embarrassing if it was exposed. Moreover, based on the principle of holding back for a big move, boredom is often followed by a storm. We’d best be as quiet as quails and not let the storm splash our gege.”
Yan Han pouted, her eyes twinkling with cunning. “Gege‘s web drama is airing tomorrow. He definitely needs to trend to attract traffic. But gege is so obscure, what can we do without buying a trending topic?”
The vice president’s hesitant voice came through the phone, “Uh… That makes sense. It’s not impossible, but our fan club is broke.”
“Then I’ll pay for it myself,” Yan Han said nonchalantly. Her financial audacity made the student vice president very envious.
The sound of a door opening and closing came from outside. Yan Han’s face instantly bloomed into a smile. “Talk later, my sister is back!”
With that, she pata-pata quickly went out the door on her beautiful bare feet, descending the mahogany stairs. She saw Lin Fan chugging water. “Fanfan, why are you so late today?”
Lin Fan put down her water glass, turned, and embraced her cousin who had rushed over. “Did you gain weight? You feel a bit heavier.”
Lin Fan hugged Yan Han and weighed her up and down again. “Mom and Dad asked you to help at the company recently. Why haven’t you lost weight? You look heavier instead.”
Yan Han rolled her eyes. “Silly Fan, this isn’t fat, it’s curvaceous! And, the position Aunt and Uncle arranged for me is too boring. All I have to do every day is handle receiving, sending, printing, and organizing documents. That’s it…”
Regarding her cousin’s work issues, Lin Fan smiled helplessly. “You don’t still want to join the entertainment industry, do you?”
Yan Han nodded honestly. “I do. I still want to film with gege, even a cannon fodder role is fine.”
Looking at Yan Han’s infatuated expression, Lin Fan, who had just felt she understood her cousin’s celebrity-chasing mindset, immediately stopped understanding.
She put down her cousin and patted Yan Han’s shoulder earnestly. “Give up. Otherwise, your Aunt and Uncle will cut your allowance.”
