The Prosecutor Is Accustomed To Waiting For A Rabbit To Hit A Stump - Chapter 32
Chapter 32
When she returned to her apartment door, it was already nine in the evening.
The unappetizing scorched flatbread from the rest stop, which had been churning in her stomach, was long gone.
Lin Fan was ravenously hungry, and her left hand was still throbbing faintly. She consoled herself, rather stoically: At least it’s not my right hand; it won’t delay my work.
However, as she exited the elevator, she was directly facing Gu Ye’s door.
The image of Chief Prosecutor Gu’s stunning smile under the bright sun flashed in her mind, and her feet instinctively walked toward the door.
She knocked on the door with her flexible, uninjured right hand.
Unfortunately, no one was inside.
Lin Fan suddenly felt a bit deflated, though she didn’t know why.
“What am I thinking!” Lin Fan mumbled childishly, slowly and idly rummaging through her bag for her keys.
Suddenly, the elevator chimed.
Lin Fan turned her head to look, just as Gu Ye, equally exhausted, stepped out of the elevator, rubbing her neck as she walked.
The two “overtime dogs” ran into each other at the doorway.
Despite her fatigue, Lin Fan managed a smile, her eyes curving like small bridges, and two dimples gracing her mouth. “Overtime too! Don’t you prosecutors have fewer cases?”
The political and legal ranks—public security, procuratorate, courts, and justice—are unified when facing the outside world.
But internally, there is a degree of mutual “mocking.” This mocking isn’t prejudice or discrimination; it’s just joking amidst busy work.
The Procuratorate and the Courts are the closest in relationship and the most prone to such jokes.
Within the court, people often say: Look at how many prosecutors they have, corresponding to our four criminal court judges, all handling the same number of cases. The Procuratorate has it so easy!
Lin Fan also heard rumors that many of their court’s judge’s assistants were eyeing transfer positions in the Procuratorate.
Why?
The reason is simple: same pay, half the workload!
Having heard these half-grumbling, half-joking remarks so often, Lin Fan was genuinely surprised now.
She’s working overtime with that workload?!
If anyone else had said that, Gu Ye wouldn’t have given them a second glance.
She didn’t care; whatever people wanted to say, she generally ignored it.
But when it came from the little rabbit, it was different.
Gu Ye’s gaze softened as she looked at Lin Fan. Just as she was about to speak, her sharp eyes caught sight of the gauze wrapped around Lin Fan’s left hand.
She frowned. “What happened to your hand?”
“Oh~” Lin Fan raised her left hand nonchalantly. “It’s nothing, just accidentally jabbed it on some glass.”
Gu Ye looked at the little white rabbit’s casual expression and sighed. She wanted to say, Be more careful next time! She also wanted to say that she must take good care of the wound.
However, her nature was cold, and these words of concern caught in her throat. She thought they were all useless words that could neither heal the injury nor change the fact that it had occurred, so she swallowed them back.
As she opened the door, she turned and asked Lin Fan, “Are you hungry? I can make you some supper?”
Lin Fan’s eyes instantly lit up.
The beautiful older sister is offering to make supper~
“That would be wonderful!” Lin Fan hopped and skipped, following Gu Ye into the apartment.
Gu Ye’s apartment was as neat and clean as ever. She took off her crisp suit jacket and rolled up the sleeves of her shirt. “Bird’s nest porridge? Is that okay?”
“Yes, that’s fine!”
Gu Ye’s hands were very beautiful, long and slender, with distinct, fair knuckles.
The act of rolling up her sleeves carried a sense of austerity, yet also exuded a captivating and dominant air.
Lin Fan had never been in a relationship and didn’t understand these nuances, but she found the scene inexplicably beautiful and elegant.
She felt that Chief Prosecutor Gu should be playing the piano, not just cooking a bowl of porridge for her.
The atmosphere was getting slightly warm. Lin Fan sat on the sofa, fanning her flushed cheeks with her hand.
That’s odd, why is it suddenly a little hot?
She exhaled, feeling confused and not quite understanding her own emotions.
Gu Ye had eaten supper and one beef noodle meal with Lin Fan, so she knew the little white rabbit preferred a rich flavor.
She added two extra pieces of rock sugar to the bird’s nest porridge.
The porridge, besides bird’s nest, contained various beans. It was cooked until fragrant and sticky, sending up steam.
Served in a bowl, it looked particularly beautiful and immediately piqued the appetite of the already ravenous Lin Fan.
When Gu Ye carried the porridge out, Lin Fan was already sitting obediently at the dining table, tilting her head up to give her a sweet smile.
One smile was enough to wash away all of Gu Ye’s fatigue from the day.
Gu Ye placed the porridge in front of Lin Fan, specifically instructing, “It’s a bit hot; let it cool.”
Lin Fan nodded, her fervent gaze shifting from the appetizing bird’s nest porridge to the equally appetizing Gu Ye. “Thank you! For inviting me for supper! I’ll treat you to breakfast tomorrow!”
The corner of Gu Ye’s mouth subtly curved. She was delighted.
The two were sitting close together, with the steam from the porridge rising between them.
Gu Ye was polite and restrained. Before reaching out, she asked, “May I… take a look?”
“What?” Lin Fan blinked, then suddenly realized. “Oh, oh, yes, of course.”
As she spoke, she offered her injured left hand.
Then, Lin Fan watched as Gu Ye carefully and gently held her “paw” with her piano-playing hands, examining it minutely as if it were a rare treasure.
When Gu Ye looked up again, a fleeting emotion crossed her eyes, which Lin Fan didn’t quite catch.
“Does it still hurt?”
“No, it doesn’t hurt. The wound isn’t big; the doctor just bandaged it a bit dramatically.”
“You can’t get it wet, right?”
“Mhm, that’s the trouble. I also need to change the dressing regularly.” Lin Fan sighed.
“I’ll make breakfast going forward, including tomorrow morning. Is the sandwich from last time okay?”
Lin Fan shook her head. “I said I’d treat you!”
“It’s not worth the time. When you’re all better, you can treat me to a better meal.” Gu Ye’s voice was very gentle, contrasting with her sharp facial features.
Lin Fan didn’t realize this was an exception reserved just for her; Gu Ye was only this gentle to her.
She was unaware, so all the myriad emotions in her heart transformed into a high-value “Good Person Card”: What a wonderful neighbor! What a wonderful person!
Lin Fan’s intense gaze made Gu Ye’s ears turn slightly red.
The little white rabbit was staring at her so directly, without any diversion or subtlety. Her presence reflected in the little rabbit’s clear black and white eyes made Gu Ye feel a little flustered.
She had been subjected to many kinds of gazes, good and bad. She was never intimidated, and they never caused a ripple in her heart.
But only at this moment did she miscalculate.
She nervously tucked the stray strands of hair behind her ear.
She swallowed tensely, trying to change the subject. “Is enforcement tiring?”
Mentioning the exhaustion of enforcement work immediately diverted Lin Fan’s attention. She shifted her burning gaze away and sighed. “Yes! Mentally exhausting!”
Lin Fan sighed again, her honesty bordering on bluntness. “When I first started enforcement, I thought it was very simple. If there’s a law and a regulation, just follow the regulation, right? Later, when I actually did enforcement, I realized that the things, measures, and principles we take for granted are not so naturally accepted. The same rice nourishes thousands of different people, and everyone has their own perspective; a person’s position determines their thinking.”
Lin Fan was actually a very cautious person. She wasn’t willing to open up to just anyone.
She had her stubbornness and pride and wasn’t used to casually exposing her vulnerability to others.
Colleagues and family all thought she was a little sun, but even the brightest things have shadows.
Perhaps it was the comforting aroma of the bird’s nest porridge, perhaps Gu Ye’s gentle tone, or perhaps the moonlight was too beautiful tonight.
Lin Fan couldn’t hold back. She peeled back her inner self, revealing her fatigue, weariness, helplessness, and indignation to Gu Ye.
She said, “Take deducting a defendant’s wages, for example. It’s such a simple matter, but the company’s finance department won’t tell you the defendant’s specific income and won’t cooperate. They won’t let us freeze the account at the company; they only give us the card number to freeze the salary card. They won’t tell you about all the salary accounts, and some companies pay commissions in cash. After the applicant finds out, they get upset, saying our work has such huge loopholes and we didn’t even notice, saying we took money from the defendant and bent the law for personal gain, and they threaten to report us.”
She continued, “I thought, well, companies are like that, it’s normal. But later, I went to execute a child support case. Before going, I thought it would be simple. Supporting one’s elders is a matter of course. I went there with community workers, neighborhood leaders, and called on some local people to interpret the law and explain that these are matters of common sense. I was sure we could resolve the case and maintain harmony. But in reality? I was too naive. The residents didn’t want to get involved, didn’t want to say anything more, and wouldn’t even tell you where the defendant lived. Do you know why?”
Gu Ye listened quietly, her gaze toward Lin Fan carrying a tenderness and encouragement that she herself hadn’t noticed. “Why? Is it because the elderly will eventually pass away, but the defendant will have to deal with them for much longer?”
“Exactly. You’re so smart,” Lin Fan forced a bitter laugh. “Why fear offending the elderly? But offending the defendant always carries a risk.”
Lin Fan shook her head helplessly. “I don’t know when the social atmosphere became like this. Before people speak, they don’t check their conscience; they weigh the gains and losses. Honestly, after working in enforcement, I’ve received many calls. A few of them I know for sure are loan sharks. They lend money at exorbitant rates, doing dirty work of making money from money, using initial deductions and standardized loan notes, etc. These bad people transform into applicants for enforcement, become victims, and become the ones who instruct me to pressure the real victims.”
At this point, Lin Fan bit down hard on her lip. She could vaguely judge that these people were loan sharks, but they had complete documentation, the legal process was followed, and she had no evidence.
Gu Ye felt a pang of heartache and suddenly reached out to touch Lin Fan’s lips. “Let go.” Her voice was slightly hoarse, carrying a hint of restrained desire.
This sudden movement startled Lin Fan, who instinctively obeyed and released her lip.
When she looked up again, she was met directly by Gu Ye’s eyes, which were like the ocean, threatening to drown her.
“Huh?… Wh-what’s wrong?” Lin Fan, who was usually sharp like a little white rabbit, stammered.
