The Prosecutor Is Accustomed To Waiting For A Rabbit To Hit A Stump - Chapter 31
Chapter 31
The car had just entered the highway when the applicant’s phone call came in again. “Officer Lin, have you arrived?”
Lin Fan couldn’t help but laugh. “Even if we were flying, we couldn’t be there yet!”
The applicant, a big man, sounded embarrassed. “Yes, yes, yes. I’m just too anxious. That bastard is nowhere to be found, and I finally tracked him down. I’m just afraid he’ll run away.”
“Keep an eye on him. We’ll stay in contact at all times.”
“Good, good, good.”
Hanging up the phone, Lin Fan told Lao Shen, the driver, “Go as fast as you can.”
Lao Shen was different from the driver Lao Chen. He was a bit younger and usually very humorous, but when he drove fast, he often made everyone in the car carsick!
He even had a nickname: “Newbie-Puker.” Any newcomer who rode in his car would inevitably get sick.
Just recently, a young girl from the comprehensive office went out with him to take photos. She held on during the trip there, but on the way back, with only one traffic light left until the court, she couldn’t stand it anymore. She asked Lao Shen to pull over and squatted by the roadside with a small bag, throwing up.
The girl was teary-eyed and pale, insisting that the car go on. She preferred to walk back to the courthouse rather than ride anymore.
Lao Shen, upon hearing the request for speed, became visibly excited. “Buckle up!”
Good heavens. Lin Fan and Chen Qian, seasoned veterans of his driving, almost couldn’t stay settled in Lao Shen’s car.
Lin Fan was in the passenger seat, and her legs were shaky when she got out.
The applicant, however, was beaming and rushed over as if encountering a great fortune. “You were so fast! A four-hour drive, and you didn’t even need three hours.”
Lin Fan took a moment to recover. A wave of nausea, surging from her stomach, made her extremely brief. “Let’s go. Lead the way.”
“Right away!”
The applicant swaggered, leading Lin Fan and Chen Qian into the mahogany furniture factory managed by the defendant. The noise inside was deafening, assaulting Lin Fan and preventing the nausea from dissipating, yet she couldn’t swallow it down.
Chen Qian’s face wasn’t good either. Already fair-skinned, he was now deathly pale, though his gaze kept returning to Lin Fan.
He couldn’t resist moving closer to Lin Fan, offering a rare moment without a sharp tongue. “Can you hold up? Maybe you should rest in the car. I’ll go look.”
Lin Fan surveyed Chen Qian’s moderately built frame. Chen Qian had passed the judge’s assistant exam and was issued a judge’s suit uniform. It was custom-tailored, with the jacket hugging his waistline and the trousers complementing his long legs. His leather shoes, usually spotless, were now dusted with factory grime. He was dressed fashionably, with that “trendy-handsome” look, and the red tie, patterned subtly with the scales of justice, created a strange yet harmonious handsomeness.
This made Lin Fan smile. Just as she was about to tease him, she suddenly heard the applicant yell, “Bastard! Don’t run! Pay the money! Pay the money! You bastard!”
Lin Fan quickly looked over, seeing a man’s figure sprinting away, disappearing through a small side door of the factory.
“Stop!” Lin Fan had almost no time to react and immediately chased after him.
Her physical fitness was better than Chen Qian’s. After chasing for a while, Chen Qian and the applicant were left behind, but Lin Fan was getting closer to the defendant.
“Stop!” Chen Qian couldn’t provide physical support, having been left far behind, so he could only use his voice to support her!
Lin Fan was about to catch up to the defendant when she suddenly caught a glimpse of a large truck heading toward them on the road.
There was no time!
Without hesitation, she executed a standard forward dive, pinning the defendant against the curb.
As the two fell to the ground, the large truck narrowly scraped past the defendant’s scalp.
Lin Fan’s heart was pounding. Her first words were a sharp reprimand. “Watch where you’re running! Is your life worth this thirty thousand yuan!”
Chen Qian and the applicant caught up, their hearts still racing in fear. Chen Qian squatted down, helping Lin Fan hold the defendant down. “If you want to die, just find a tree by the side of the road! Why are you rushing to reincarnate! Not only do you owe money and not pay, but you’re also a jinx who almost endangered someone else’s life! Are you crazy!”
The applicant was also panting heavily, clutching his chest between gasps. “Lao Peng, let’s talk this out. I can give you a discount, but there’s no need to run! If it weren’t for Officer Lin, I’d be here to collect your corpse today!”
The applicant’s heart was pounding fiercely. If this bastard had really been hit by a truck today, he wouldn’t be able to do business in the mahogany furniture circle anymore. People would say terrible things—that he forced someone to death just to collect a debt! Who would dare to do business with him then?
Thank goodness, thank goodness…
The defendant lay pinned to the ground, taking a long time to regain his senses.
It wasn’t until Lin Fan and Chen Qian led him back to the car that the defendant’s face regained some color. The middle-aged man, dressed in the dark leather jacket favored by businessmen, stammered, “Thank you so much, Officer.”
Lin Fan frowned, subtly covering one hand with the other. Sitting in the passenger seat, she heard this and let out a faint chuckle. “It’s nothing. Let’s talk about the thirty thousand yuan worth of goods you owe. I don’t think your factory is in as much financial trouble as you claim. If you have the intent to pay this money, the applicant is here now. We can help you mediate; you don’t necessarily have to pay it all at once; you can pay in installments. Or, do you simply refuse to comply? Should I take you to detention today? Where you can reflect quietly and appreciate the happiness of surviving a near-death experience?”
She was the most composed of the group, even having the presence of mind to joke.
The defendant was naturally a procrastinator and already possessed the latent traits of a habitual defaulter.
But today’s incident immediately sobered him up, and he dared not delay anymore. His attitude was excellent. “I’ll pay! I’ll pay! Give me some time. I’ll borrow from my relatives and friends. Didn’t he just say he’d give me a discount? Please, Officer, help me ask if I can get a discount and then pay in installments.”
Goodness, he’s still a cheapskate.
Lin Fan nodded helplessly.
She left Chen Qian to watch him in the car and got out to find the applicant.
The applicant was leaning against a utility pole, smoking. Seeing Lin Fan walk toward him, he immediately put out the cigarette and greeted her with a flattering look. “Officer Lin, thank you today. You saved that bastard’s life and saved my business. It’s almost dinner time. Would you honor me with your presence? I’d like to buy you dinner.”
Lin Fan’s hand was throbbing painfully. During the arrest, her palm had landed on a piece of glass on the sidewalk, leaving a large gash. She covered it so no one would notice, intent on finishing the case first.
“No need for dinner. You’ve done business with him for so long; you should know that not many people in your industry have a lot of liquid capital. He wants to settle with you, pay you some today, and settle the remaining amount over the next few months. What are your thoughts?”
“Lao Peng is a bit of a scoundrel, a bastard, but he’s not a bad person. Installments are fine, I agree. But he has to pay me ten thousand today.”
“Okay. I’ll negotiate that for you. One more thing, he wants you to give him a discount. Of course, that’s entirely up to you.”
The detention decision paper was unused. Both parties signed a settlement agreement.
Before leaving, Lin Fan reminded the defendant, “Remember to fulfill the agreement on time. Don’t think about delaying again. If you don’t comply, the case will be reinstated, and I’ll come back to find you.”
The defendant looked dejected and said sullenly, “I won’t dare again! Really, I won’t! You people are too dedicated! You came all this way! I truly won’t dare again!”
Seeing that he had genuinely learned his lesson, Lin Fan’s attitude softened considerably. “Alright. I wish you prosperous business.”
“Thank you, Officer Lin! Thank you!”
The matter was concluded at 4:30 PM.
Lin Fan frowned and used her uninjured right hand to search for the nearest hospital. “Lao Shen, take me to the hospital.”
Chen Qian frowned. “What’s wrong? Are you hurt?”
Lin Fan was nonchalant, even forcing a smile that showed her two dimples. “It’s nothing serious. Look, the blood has already clotted.”
Lin Fan opened the hand she had been clenching and hiding.
Her skin was naturally fair. Although her hand had obvious calluses from training and weightlifting, the vicious-looking wound was still terrifyingly visible—about three or four centimeters long—and particularly jarring to Chen Qian’s eyes.
He immediately frowned and ranted like a furious gale: “Are you an idiot! You should have gone to the hospital earlier! You should have just let me handle that jerk! Do you have a brain, or did a dog eat it?! You need a tetanus shot! Now that the blood has clotted, they’ll have to break it open to clean it, and it’s going to hurt like hell! You’re going to be the death of me!”
Good heavens. The whole ride to the hospital was just Chen Qian’s “monologue.”
Coming out of the hospital, Lin Fan’s left hand was wrapped in gauze.
She didn’t dare go home, so she sent WeChat messages to her mother and her cousin, telling a lie that she needed to attend a week-long training and would grab her clothes from the Anding District apartment for convenience.
Her mother, who was busy in a meeting, replied with a terse “Received” amidst her busy schedule.
And her glamorous cousin, Yan Han, didn’t chatter with unnecessary remarks this time either, simply replying, “Got it.”
This made Lin Fan raise an eyebrow. Very unusual!
Indeed, as Lin Fan sensed, Yan Han was being very unusual and very busy.
She wasn’t busy working like Lin Mama, but busy flirting with a wooden stick and it was so much fun!
Flirting with this wooden stick named Xu Sheng had a unique flavor.
