The Prosecutor Is Accustomed To Waiting For A Rabbit To Hit A Stump - Chapter 24
Chapter 24
In the initial self-introductions, everyone was very cautious.
Lin Fan said almost nothing, only briefly outlining her timeline and concealing any time points where she had done something questionable.
“I received the boss’s notification at 8:50 AM that there would be surveillance maintenance today. I arrived at the law firm at 8:56 AM and greeted the Beautiful Receptionist.”
Yan Han, playing the Beautiful Receptionist, gave Lin Fan a look. Naturally, the details about drugging the victim were also in her script.
My sister is reliable; she successfully hid the murder motive.
Yan Han secretly gave a mental thumbs-up to Lin Fan, who, despite being a first-time player, knew how to downplay the crucial information.
“In the morning, I was meeting clients. At 11:30 AM, I saw the boss leave the law firm. When I went out for lunch, I noticed that Intern Xu was still at his desk. Everyone else was out for lunch, and he was the only one left in the firm. I thought it was strange that he wasn’t eating.”
The original text in the script was: 12:30 PM You and the Beautiful Receptionist went out for lunch, but Intern Xu, who was supposed to join you, didn’t go and was working at his desk until you left.
From that simple sentence, Lin Fan, seasoned in the field of enforcement, immediately felt something was off. Why specifically mention this point unless he had some secretive action he needed to perform away from others?
No matter what, it was safe to throw some suspicion his way. As Lin Fan spoke, she looked at Xu Sheng, deciding in her heart that whether the Surveillance Manager was the killer or not, Xu Sheng would be the scapegoat.
At this moment, Xu Sheng was still drinking water with an honest, innocent expression, completely unaware of Lin Fan’s subtle manipulation and the small landmine she was planting.
Gu Ye, however, immediately understood. She looked up at Lin Fan, observing the little rabbit’s kind expression, intently reciting the timeline as if that’s exactly what was written in her script.
Her look was the easiest way to win trust and favor; it seemed that any word spoken by that fair, delicate face gained an inherent sincerity.
Kind face, “dark” heart—a cunning rabbit indeed.
Gu Ye covered her mouth with her hand and lowered her head, stifling a soft laugh.
Truly adorable.
After selecting Xu Sheng as her target in that moment, Lin Fan steadily continued to drop hints of suspicion. “While we were eating, the Beautiful Receptionist tried to call Intern Xu, but couldn’t get through. After dinner, I went for a walk, and then we heard that Attorney Zhang had died and that we needed to cooperate with the police investigation.”
The rich friend suddenly interjected, “When we three were eating, when did you call Intern Xu? I didn’t know about that.”
“It started at 6:25 PM. By the way, you had gone to the restroom then. Anyway, no one answered. Maybe Intern Xu was busy.”
After casting suspicion, Lin Fan blinked. “I’m done. Next.”
Next was Yan Han, who smiled radiantly. “The Beautiful Receptionist is true to her name; I’m very beautiful and the receptionist at this law firm. I also received the boss’s notification at 8:50 AM that the surveillance would be maintained, and it would be off from 10 AM until 10 PM. At 8:56 AM, I arrived at the firm, followed by the Female Lawyer and Intern Xu.
At 9:45 AM, the Surveillance Manager received the repair personnel and went to the monitoring room. At 10:10 AM, Attorney Zhang arrived at the firm and asked me to buy him coffee. After that, I did some routine work.
In the afternoon, Boss Ma discussed some work with me. I ate dinner with the boss and the Female Lawyer. Afterward, I returned to the law firm with Boss Ma. I went to the restroom and ran into the Surveillance Manager coming out of the ladies’ room.
Immediately after, we heard a remarkably loud scream. Boss Ma had found Attorney Zhang’s body in the storage room.
At 7:20 PM, Intern Xu, the Female Lawyer, and the police arrived at the law firm. The police informed us that the killer was among us and asked us to cooperate with the investigation.”
As soon as Yan Han finished, Xu Sheng laughed, “You ran into the Surveillance Manager in the ladies’ room?! Gu Ye, you’re not cross-dressing! Your character is male!”
Gu Ye’s expression didn’t change. Her fingers lightly rested on the script as she said carelessly, “I have that preference. Is that a problem?”
“Hahahaha.” Xu Sheng and the rich friend exchanged glances and burst into laughter.
Yan Han couldn’t help but laugh too. “So, you have a habit of using the ladies’ room when no one is around, do you?”
Gu Ye shook her head. “I do have this habit, but I don’t know if anyone else was in the firm at the time. I was busy.”
“So rigorous,” the rich friend praised. “I’m starting to worry that if you’re the killer, you’ll run us ragged.”
Danger alarm!
When Lin Fan heard the rich friend’s comment, it was as if an antenna had shot up on her head. A loud “Beep, beep” alarm blared in her ears like thunder.
She quickly tried to cover for Gu Ye, smiling. “Now that you mention it, I just realized that our table has the police, prosecution, and court system all gathered here. Look, Officer Xu is the police, Gu Ye is the prosecutor, and I’m the court. Goodness! You two ordinary citizens need to be careful! We’re all professionals.”
“Hahahaha, this is getting interesting. Let’s continue. Next is me! So, I’ll go. I am Boss Ma…”
Seeing the attention diverted and the alarm disarmed, Lin Fan quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
Suddenly, she felt a slight tug on her clothing, coming from Gu Ye’s direction.
Lin Fan didn’t dare turn her head, only slightly tilting it.
Under the table, Gu Ye’s slender, long fingers were tugging at the edge of Lin Fan’s suit jacket. The gentle pull felt like…
…flirting!
What does she want? Lin Fan was stunned.
The next second, she saw the long fingers move lower, finally resting on her thigh!
Heavens!
Lin Fan’s spine instantly went rigid. She could feel the gentle pressing sensation right through her suit trousers.
What on earth does this ‘high mountain flower’ want!
On the table, Boss Ma, played by the rich friend, was still reciting his timeline.
Since his mission was to find the murderer, he was playing very frankly, holding almost nothing back.
His timeline included: 11:20 AM He saw Attorney Zhang walking toward the monitoring room.
3:10 PM He went to find the Beautiful Receptionist and discovered a sticky note left by Attorney Zhang, which contained the coffee brand and the words “Waiting for you tonight.”
3:30 PM – 4:10 PM He called the Beautiful Receptionist into his office, stating that the law firm did not permit office romances, and if discovered, one of them would have to leave. He asked the Beautiful Receptionist if she was dating Attorney Zhang.
The Beautiful Receptionist replied that ever since she joined the firm, Attorney Zhang had been taking liberties with her, often leaning in from behind her under the pretense of arranging work, or sending her vulgar and crude messages, including an improper request that she not wear underwear beneath her business suit the next day.
Recently, it had become much worse. Once, when everyone was out, Attorney Zhang had even reached out and touched her thigh. She had to hide in the ladies’ room, but Attorney Zhang wouldn’t give up, standing by the restroom door with his phone, waiting for her until the Female Lawyer returned from court, only then did he leave.
…These were all key pieces of information.
But Lin Fan couldn’t focus on the “blabbering” human loudspeaker at the table. Under the table, Gu Ye’s finger moved vertically and horizontally on her thigh, actually writing a word!
The intimacy was deadly. There were pauses between the vertical and horizontal strokes. Gu Ye’s body heat seemed to conduct through to Lin Fan’s leg, making the hairs on her arms stand up. She felt a strange, electric sensation.
The two were engaged in such a secretive action, yet both maintained a poker face.
Gu Ye watched the rich friend, occasionally nodding.
Lin Fan was even more composed. The little white rabbit in her heart was jumping wildly, but her face remained calm, smiling faintly, and maintaining her composure.
After finishing the word, Gu Ye withdrew her hand.
With the departure of that warmth, Lin Fan’s shoulder unconsciously relaxed.
She couldn’t help but grumble inwardly, Couldn’t you have just written “You are the murderer” on a piece of paper and secretly slipped it to me!
Her ear tips felt inexplicably hot. Lin Fan raised her hand and covered them through her hair.
Strange, why did she suddenly feel thirsty?
Meanwhile, the rich friend had finished his timeline. “Assuming everything said before is true, I was the first to report the body’s condition. You can use my description of the body as the standard. At 7:15 PM, while passing the storage room, I discovered coffee stains on the floor. I’m a clean freak, so I pushed the door open to clean up, and that’s when I found Attorney Zhang dead in the storage room. He had a ligature mark on his neck and coffee stains on his body. I screamed, and immediately, the Beautiful Receptionist and the Surveillance Manager came over.”
The rich friend was an experienced murder mystery player. “This script clearly requires us to determine the time of death. What we know now is that he was already dead before 7:15 PM. Since the three of us ate dinner between 6:10 PM and 7:05 PM, if there is subsequent evidence proving the time of death was between 6:10 PM and 7:05 PM, I think we three can be tentatively ruled out.”
The rich friend spoke logically, thoroughly immersed in the game, completely missing the fact that among the remaining four people, Yan Han quietly exchanged glances with Xu Sheng.
The sexy and beautiful receptionist pursed her lips and slightly shook her head at the intern lawyer. Xu Sheng was momentarily transported into his role, feeling as though she was the one he loved, the one he would sacrifice his future to protect.
Lin Fan’s eyes met Gu Ye’s in mid-air and quickly darted away, yet in that instant, they understood each other’s meaning.
Find a scapegoat, and pretend we don’t know each other.
The “Prosecutor and Court” were thinking alike, and their gazes turned toward the still-oblivious “Public Security” officer.
