The Prosecutor Is Accustomed To Waiting For A Rabbit To Hit A Stump - Chapter 22
Chapter 22
Gu Ye watched Cheng Wen Nuan finish her meal and homework, and then chatted with Cheng Wen Nuan’s grandmother, whose memory was quite foggy.
The serious prosecutor, in her attempt to cheer someone up, was surprisingly effective, making the old lady giggle and laugh. Before leaving, she held the grandmother’s hand, who called her “daughter” left and right.
The old lady couldn’t remember clearly that the person sitting in front of her was the one who had put her real daughter in prison. But seeing her grandmother so happy, a hint of sadness still flashed across Cheng Wen Nuan’s innocent face.
She hadn’t seen her mother in a long time, and she missed her.
Stepping out of the ward, Gu Ye patted Cheng Wen Nuan’s shoulder. “Go on back. I’ll take you to see your mother in a few days.”
Cheng Wen Nuan’s eyes widened, joy spreading across her cheeks. “Thank you, Sister Gu!”
She looked as adorable as could be. Gu Ye bent down and pinched the little kid’s cheek. “Be happy.”
“Yes, ma’am!”
Cheng Wen Nuan watched Gu Ye leave, being particularly well-behaved and polite.
Gu Ye was about to find a random restaurant for dinner before heading back to the unit to review the newly assigned case files, when she received a call from Xu Sheng.
“Old Squad Leader! Do you have time tonight?! It’s an emergency!”
“No time.” Gu Ye’s face, which had just been smiling, suddenly went cold. She uttered three words and hung up.
By the time her car pulled out of the hospital parking lot, Xu Sheng had already called twice more. Gu Ye picked up the third call. “Don’t talk nonsense. What is it?”
“We’re one person short for a murder mystery game. Prosecutor Gu, I beg you! It’s right up your alley!”
“That’s not my alley; it’s yours. I don’t have time. I need to work overtime.”
“Oh, Sister! The holiday starts tomorrow! Why are you still working overtime! Quick, come on. A friend I promised stood me up. It’s truly a desperate emergency—five people short one! Besides, this is a game organized by my childhood friend, and the girl he likes is here. Even if you consider it a daily good deed, you’d be playing matchmaker, which is just as meaningful as your work!”
Gu Ye scoffed. “Don’t any of your many friends have time? I’m not interested in this.”
If Gu Ye wanted to reject someone, there was no one she couldn’t reject.
She ruthlessly and heartlessly hung up on Xu Sheng and drove toward her unit. While waiting at a traffic light, she pulled out her phone to order takeout to the office.
Xu Sheng’s call came in again.
“Sister! There really is no one else! I beg you!”
“Don’t beg me. I’m the father you can never get.”
“Ugh! You really are my boss!” Xu Sheng sighed, and after an awkward pause, he suddenly said in surprise, “Squad Leader, talk about coincidence, guess who’s participating in this game?”
“Spit it out.” The green light turned on. Gu Ye stepped on the gas. There were no cars ahead on the empty road. Xu Sheng’s voice came through the Bluetooth headset, lightly tapping her eardrum.
“That enthusiastic citizen who was with you last time! How lucky, the girl my friend is trying to pursue brought the court girl with her.”
“Lin Fan?” Gu Ye’s lips parted slightly, and the name she spoke carried a hint of tenderness that even she didn’t detect.
“Yes, it’s her.” Xu Sheng stood in a corner of the waiting area of the murder mystery place, watching his rich second-generation friend smile obsequiously as he approached the girl. He used to be a ladies’ man, but now he looked like a simp in front of this girl, which was creepy.
However, the girl was indeed beautiful. Lin Fan stood beside her, looking like a little white flower overshadowed by her cousin’s charm.
Yet, cuteness is hard to win against sexiness. Even with Lin Fan and the girl standing together, Xu Sheng’s gaze couldn’t help but linger on the other girl.
Suddenly, he heard Gu Ye’s cold voice on the phone. “Location.”
“Huh??”
“What’s the location? I’m coming now.”
“Oh, oh, oh.” Xu Sheng finally reacted, giving Gu Ye the address, nearly moved to tears. “Good Squad Leader! I knew you were cold on the outside but warm on the inside, the most reliable person.”
Before Xu Sheng could say anything else touching, the line went dead.
Gu Ye’s speed in hanging up was even faster than her ruthlessness.
Lin Fan was dragged to the murder mystery game by her cousin. Upon entering, she saw Officer Xu (Xu Sheng). The two greeted each other, which confused Yan Han and Xu Sheng’s rich second-generation friend.
“You know each other?” Yan Han nudged her sister.
“Public security, prosecution, and court system, you know,” Lin Fan and Xu Sheng exchanged a smile.
Xu Sheng’s rich friend was even happier. What a coincidence! They knew each other! “Yan Han, this is your sister, right?”
Yan Han nodded, introducing Lin Fan generously, but poked the rich friend where Lin Fan couldn’t see. “Didn’t you say you had a good prospect to introduce to my sister? Was it Officer Xu?”
The rich friend didn’t dare say that he organized the game to pursue the elder sister. As for introducing a boyfriend to the younger sister, it was just a pretext to ensure the elder sister would come.
Crucially, the friend he originally found for the sister couldn’t make it, and the remaining person, Xu Sheng, was meant to be his wingman. The substitute was Xu Sheng’s university squad leader, whom he had met before—a girl whose aura was taller than her actual height. The rich friend had mixed feelings, but with his goddess in front of him, he could only acquiesce. “Y-Yes.”
Yan Han frowned. “A police officer, and he seems pretty straight-laced. My sister is already easygoing and outspoken. If those two start arguing, would it count as assaulting a police officer?” She sighed, watching Lin Fan talk casually with Xu Sheng. “Forget about it. You should also tell Officer Xu that I don’t think they’re a good match.”
“Will do!” The rich friend was thrilled. “The other person is still on the way and will be here soon. Should we pick our roles and change costumes first?”
“Fine.”
The murder mystery game is essentially a role-playing game where players try to find the killer. There were character scripts for the players to choose from.
It was Lin Fan’s first time playing. Among the five character scripts, there were only two female roles: a receptionist and a lawyer.
Yan Han looked out for her and analyzed, “This script takes place at a law firm. The receptionist should be quite key because she sees everyone coming and going. Do you want to try a challenge for your first time?”
Lin Fan picked up the female lawyer’s script without thinking. “With my brain, something simpler will do.”
“Alright then. I’ll be the beautiful receptionist then, which also fits my real situation better.”
The character description for the beautiful receptionist was: Law firm receptionist, as beautiful as a flower, curvaceous and shapely.
It was indeed somewhat similar to Yan Han.
The rich friend’s mind was focused on the beauty. Seeing Yan Han choose the receptionist, he quickly glanced at the owner. It wouldn’t be logical for the receptionist and the owner not to have a storyline, so he immediately grabbed that script.
“My last name is Xu, so I’ll be the intern.” Xu Sheng chose Xu the Intern, a character who was a university student and an intern lawyer at the firm.
The last role left for Gu Ye was the surveillance manager—a person with a disability but strong willpower, primarily responsible for managing the law firm’s surveillance equipment.
Xu Sheng couldn’t help but chuckle. What a character.
The host asked if they wanted to change into costumes, which were essentially simple business suits.
Yan Han, being a germaphobe, initially didn’t want to change, but to give Lin Fan a better gaming experience, she held her nose and endured it.
Lin Fan’s role was the female lawyer, a simple and capable gray business suit, slightly different from a court officer’s uniform, with a more tailored fit.
Once she put it on, it accentuated her figure perfectly, showing off her waist and hips. She tucked her hair, which was getting long, behind her ears. Her fair, round face looked less like a seasoned lawyer and more like a recent intern fresh out of school.
She walked out in the costume and looked up to see the ‘high mountain flower’ sitting in a wheelchair, wearing olive-green overalls, reading the script. Hearing the sound, the ‘high mountain flower’ looked up as well.
Their eyes met in mid-air. The ‘high mountain flower’ was different.
Before, Prosecutor Gu, in her uniform, was terribly cold and beautiful, intimidating most people from approaching. But now, the ‘high mountain flower’ sitting in a wheelchair and wearing overalls exuded a sense of asceticism and restraint! Her slim waist was particularly eye-catching.
The look in her eyes, illuminated by the light, carried a certain casual, enchanting charm.
Lin Fan instinctively knew that her face must have turned red!
