The Prosecutor Is Accustomed To Waiting For A Rabbit To Hit A Stump - Chapter 13
Chapter 13
The on-duty police officer at the station chuckled when he saw Gu Ye and called out to his colleagues, “Quick, quick, bring the man over from the concerned citizens.”
“I didn’t do anything wrong! Officer! These two people assaulted me!” Chen Jia roared furiously.
“Whether you did anything wrong, you can explain inside.” The officer who had just been smiling at Gu Ye immediately put on a straight, very serious face.
Watching his colleague lead Chen Jia away, he turned back, instantly changing his expression to a teasing grin for Gu Ye. “Concerned citizen, weren’t you planning to find a hotel for the night since you had no place to stay? How do you have time to drop someone off here?”
“Xu Sheng, shut up.” Gu Ye maintained her habitual poker face. “These individuals are eyewitnesses. Take them to give statements. Also, the little girl, contact her parents as soon as possible.”
Gu Ye was logically sharp and articulate, effectively taking charge at the police station.
Xu Sheng, who was used to following Gu Ye’s instructions from their university days, didn’t immediately react and nodded. “I’ve already contacted them. Her mother is on the way. You all aren’t in a hurry, are you? Take a seat and rest. We’ll take statements one by one.”
Then, he quickly realized his mistake. This isn’t college anymore; this is my turf. He glanced at Gu Ye. “You can handle hunger the best, so you can go last.”
“Fine.”
Gu Ye had intended to go to that shop for dinner, but she encountered this situation before she could eat.
Lin Fan, who had been standing silently in the corner, suddenly raised her hand obediently. “I’m not in a rush. Let them go first.”
Xu Sheng smiled at Lin Fan without saying anything.
Before leaving, he asked Gu Ye to keep an eye on the little girl. “This young girl is still a minor. We need to wait for her parents to arrive before taking a statement.”
Gu Ye looked at the girl who was sticking close to Lin Fan. As her gaze moved up, she saw Lin Fan looking at her too.
The moment their eyes met, the skilled female court officer’s harmless, round face bloomed into a hearty smile.
She was utterly adorable and cute, like a freshly bathed little white rabbit, ears perked toward Gu Ye.
She really has a face that aligns with my aesthetic. Even knowing that this young woman wasn’t as innocent as she looked, Gu Ye was still slightly polite, nodding to Lin Fan. “Have a seat first.”
“Okay!” Lin Fan beamed, her round eyes practically disappearing in the process.
The police station was short-staffed due to an ongoing event, as many officers had been dispatched.
So, at this moment, only Gu Ye, Lin Fan, and the quiet little girl were in the office.
Lin Fan gently comforted the girl, who only nodded.
Lin Fan sighed and patted the girl’s head.
The space fell quiet, making Lin Fan somewhat unaccustomed. Her personality was complex: very enthusiastic when she wanted to be, but also capable of being quiet. She switched between these two states, making her difficult for most people to predict.
For instance, now, in this quietness, she wanted some commotion.
Especially since the famous prosecutor was sitting not far away, her long legs casually crossed, one hand resting on the desk supporting her chin, and the other scrolling on her phone. But the phone had a 45-degree privacy screen protector, so Lin Fan couldn’t see what she was doing with a quick glance.
Even such a simple sitting posture had its own charm.
Lin Fan felt an itch in her heart and couldn’t help but enthusiastically approach Gu Ye to strike up a conversation. “Prosecutor Gu, you probably don’t know me. Let me introduce myself first. My name is Lin Fan, and I’m from the Anding District Court. What a coincidence to run into you today.”
“How old are you?” Gu Ye put down her phone and directed her cool gaze toward Lin Fan.
“Huh?” Lin Fan was stunned. Her first thought was how beautiful the prosecutor’s eyes were. Then she processed the question. “I’m 26. Wh… What’s wrong?”
Gu Ye raised an eyebrow. “Then you don’t need to call me ‘You’ [formal/respectful]. I’m not much older than you.” After saying this, she shifted her gaze and returned to her phone.
Lin Fan pursed her lips, feeling slightly embarrassed.
Having worked in enforcement for years and meeting all kinds of people, she naturally sensed that Gu Ye did not wish to talk. So, she straightened her posture and remained silent.
But the scratch in her heart was persistently nagging at her.
Especially the policeman’s comment about staying in a hotel made Lin Fan extremely curious.
She held it in, but couldn’t keep it contained, and weakly started talking again.
“Prosecutor Gu, do you not have a place to stay? I happen to have an apartment in Anding District. If you need it, I can rent it to you cheaply.”
Lin Fan indeed owned an apartment, a house gifted by her parents as a starting-job present. However, because of her cousin, Lin Fan always lived at home. That apartment was mostly used as an emergency backup when she occasionally worked late and was too tired to go home.
Gu Ye quietly listened until she finished, then refused. “No need. Thank you.”
Lin Fan was about to say something else when Xu Sheng came in to call her for the statement.
At 8 PM, Lin Fan finished her statement and came out, seeing the girl sitting on a metal chair, eating bread, with a bag of bread next to her.
Seeing Lin Fan emerge, Gu Ye stood up to give her statement. As she walked past Lin Fan, Lin Fan caught a pleasant scent.
Watching Prosecutor Gu’s retreating figure, Lin Fan even sniffed the air for the faint residual fragrance.
She didn’t know if it was Gu Ye’s perfume or shampoo, but Lin Fan’s lips curved unconsciously. It smelled genuinely lovely; she wanted to buy it too.
“Sister.” The little girl interrupted her daze, taking a box of cream puffs from the bag next to her and handing it to Lin Fan.
Lin Fan smiled as she accepted it, dramatically expressing her thanks. “Thank you! I love cream puffs the most!”
The little girl’s eyes lit up. She bit her lip and shyly said, “That big sister bought them.”
Gu Ye bought them. How thoughtful. Lin Fan took a bite of the cream puff. The cream inside was delicate and smooth, very delicious.
After Lin Fan and the little girl finished the box of cream puffs together, Lin Fan rummaged in the bag and asked, “Do you want to eat…”
Before she could finish, a woman in a brightly patterned dress rushed through the door. Her eyes immediately fixated on the little girl. She covered the distance in two steps, her hand raised high.
Lin Fan was highly alert. She stepped between the two, shielding the girl behind her, and blocked the imminent slap.
The woman felt a strong force gripping her arm. She became furious. “I’m disciplining my own daughter! Who are you! What are you doing!?”
Lin Fan wasn’t angry at all. Instead, she smiled. “You’re here. Everyone was waiting for you.”
“Waiting for me for what!” The woman roared, struggling out of Lin Fan’s grip.
Lin Fan stepped back a few paces. The little girl clung tightly to her, also retreating a few steps, timidly and tremblingly calling out, “Mom.”
The woman seemed to be enraged anew by those two words. “Don’t call me Mom! You’re meeting strangers from the internet! You have the nerve! I’m going to beat you to death!”
With that, she suddenly pulled a belt from her shoulder bag and lunged forward. It was a women’s belt, thin but with hard leather.
Lin Fan’s eyes darkened, fixed on the belt whistling through the air.
The noise outside was distracting. Gu Ye and Xu Sheng exchanged a look. Gu Ye stood up first and strode out quickly with her long legs.
She arrived just as the belt was being swung, aiming straight for Lin Fan.
Gu Ye was about to intervene when she saw the “little white rabbit” seemingly unafraid of pain, meeting the belt with her hand and grabbing it instantly.
In that brief moment, the belt snapping against her hand made a sharp, clear sound.
Gu Ye frowned, but she saw the “little white rabbit” still smiling like a good Samaritan, even while clutching the belt. “Let’s talk nicely. We are civilized people, let’s build a civilized city!”
She was not delicate at all, possessing a clumsy shrewdness that was strangely endearing.
Gu Ye stared at Lin Fan for a few seconds, her thoughts unknown.
Xu Sheng immediately stepped forward. “This is a police station! What are you doing!”
The sudden presence of a police officer and his authoritative uniform immediately extinguished the aggressive woman’s flames, making her timid. “No… I wouldn’t dare. I was just momentarily agitated, just agitated. I’m mainly worried that something bad would happen to my child.”
Xu Sheng confirmed the woman’s identity and took her and the girl to give statements. Lin Fan patted the girl’s hand, comforting her. “Don’t be afraid.”
The girl nodded and timidly walked toward her mother.
Only Gu Ye and Lin Fan remained in the office.
Lin Fan stood there until the woman’s figure disappeared around the corner. Only then did her brow furrow, her bright eyes deep in thought.
Suddenly, Gu Ye asked her, “Are you alright?”
Lin Fan turned her head to look at the ‘high mountain flower’ prosecutor.
Eh?!
Did she just speak? Was she asking if I was alright?
She actually spoke to me?!
Her thoughts spun for a second. Lin Fan quickly took the opening, extending her hand to the prosecutor. “I’m fine. I have thick skin.”
Lin Fan’s skin was very fair, and the palm of her hand was soft. The red welt from the belt was very obvious.
Lin Fan had thought that when Gu Ye saw the red mark, she would offer a few more words of concern.
Instead, Gu Ye’s eyes briefly glanced over her hand, then nodded, and took out her phone…
Silence…
Lin Fan immediately sensed that this prosecutor didn’t seem to like her very much.
She cleared her throat, awkwardly pulling her hand back.
Silence…
Is the Cambridge of this evening…
On the other side, after the woman and the girl finished their statements, the woman immediately prepared to leave.
She didn’t thank the group of kind people for their help, instead wearing a cold expression, looking ready to devour her own daughter.
The little girl seemed to sense her mother’s towering anger. Her eyes pleaded with Lin Fan. Lin Fan’s feet unconsciously moved forward, blocking their path.
The woman raised an eyebrow arrogantly, her tone hostile. “What? You won’t let us go home now?”
Lin Fan immediately conjured a smile, her round face showing eyes curved into a charming crescent moon. “Meeting is fate. How about I treat everyone to a meal?”
As the saying goes, don’t hit a smiling person. The woman didn’t lash out but just scoffed coldly. “No need. I need to go home and discipline my child! I don’t have time! Move!”
Lin Fan kept smiling. “Very well, I won’t bother you then.”
With that, she crouched down, took the girl’s hand, and subtly slipped a small note with her phone number into the girl’s palm. “Take good care of yourself. Don’t meet strangers online anymore.”
The girl quietly clenched her hand into a fist, her eyes shining as she looked at Lin Fan. Her voice was timid. “Thank you.”
Standing nearby, Gu Ye’s keen eyes immediately noticed Lin Fan’s subtle action, but she didn’t say anything.
She only asked Xu Sheng, “Did you find out? What drug was it?”
At this late hour, the test results wouldn’t be ready, but for someone like Chen Jia, a little intimidation was enough to get the truth, and Gu Ye was exceptionally accurate in judging people.
Perhaps it was due to interrogating too many defendants; her eyes were as sharp as a hawk’s.
Xu Sheng leaned in and whispered, “You guessed correctly. It was ‘Blue Muffin’ (Xanax/Flunitrazepam).”
“Good heavens.” Gu Ye sneered. “Check thoroughly. ‘Blue Muffin’ is not just a date-rape drug; it’s also a third-generation narcotic. This is no longer just a simple case of attempted rape of a minor.”
