The Prosecutor Is Accustomed To Waiting For A Rabbit To Hit A Stump - Chapter 12
Chapter 12
“Alright, I know the shop. You wait at home, and I’ll drag my muddy pants to buy you hand-ground coffee!” The evening rush hour was causing traffic jams. Lin Fan’s phone was connected to the car, and she was dealing with her demanding cousin while waiting at a red light.
Yan Han sweetly acknowledged, sighing contentedly, “Only my dear sister treats me so well!~”
Lin Fan sighed. “Could you trouble me fewer times, please, Sis? Just for the sake of these pants, half covered in mud, and still going to buy you coffee.”
“Best sister ever!~ Thank you, sis. Mwah mwah~”
Amidst Yan Han’s air kisses, Lin Fan didn’t hesitate to hang up immediately. The “Mwah mwah” was strangely chilling.
But, she had no choice but to pamper her own sister.
Lin Fan was returning from the suburbs. After dropping off Ying Chaoyang at home, she still had to cross half the city to buy the hand-ground coffee from a specific specialty shop that Yan Han suddenly had an intense craving for.
The shop was said to look unpretentious on the outside, and the items inside were not expensive. Some food items were genuinely not good, but the proprietress’s hand-ground coffee was exceptional!
This afternoon, after Lin Fan finished handling the Zhang He matter with Director Cheng, she was scrolling through Weibo on the way back to the bureau and saw some pictures of fruit harvests. A thought sparked in her mind, offering a breakthrough for Grandmother Lin’s case.
Back at the court, without even entering the office, she immediately took Ying Chaoyang to the farmlands contracted by the 58-year-old unfilial son in the suburbs.
Ying Chaoyang, like a clueless youth, was instructed by Lin Fan to change into plain clothes and was puzzled. “Why are we here?”
The farmland was vast, with different crops planted in various plots.
Lin Fan curled her mouth and smiled cunningly. “We’re here to check in advance what that unfilial son is growing. When it’s ripe, we’ll sell the crops on the contracted land.”
“We have to do this, too?!” Ying Chaoyang knew that enforcement work involved selling assets like houses and cars, but… selling crops? How would they sell them? Would they be put up for judicial online auction as well?
Lin Fan had an idea in mind. She beckoned Ying Chaoyang to follow her to inquire about the situation from the people tending the crops nearby.
After asking around, Lin Fan was overjoyed, and Ying Chaoyang was stunned.
“Sister Fan! We’re not going to sell pigs, are we?!”
“Pigs are great! We can sell them tomorrow! Let’s go back now, get the documents ready, and head straight to the village committee and the farm tomorrow! It really pays to come here in person, otherwise, we wouldn’t have known that this unfilial son secretly raised pigs this year!”
Lin Fan was ecstatic. It takes time for the crops in the field to grow, but pigs don’t! Large pigs have a market, and piglets have a market too. Once the pigs are sold, Grandmother’s alimony will be secured!
“But how do we sell them? What’s the procedure? I’ve never heard of any colleague in our court auctioning off perishable items,” Ying Chaoyang worried.
Lin Fan smiled cheerfully. “It’s fine. I’ll make a few calls tonight to consult with other courts. I’ll make sure all the procedures are complete. But… we might need the epidemic prevention department to get involved, right? We’re responsible for ensuring the health of these pigs.”
Lin Fan was preoccupied with her thoughts. Without noticing, she missed a step, and one foot sank into the mud next to the farm ridge!
“Watch out!” Ying Chaoyang frantically tried to help her.
Lin Fan quickly stabilized herself and didn’t fall, but her denim pants and running shoe were covered in dark mud.
“I’m fine! Take care of yourself!” Lin Fan cautioned. Then, balancing on her clean foot, she swung her muddy foot in the air, managing to shake off some of the mud.
By the time she was going to buy Yan Han the hand-ground coffee, the mud had perfectly blended with her shoe and pants. More importantly, the car mats also had some rural “artwork” patterns on them.
Lin Fan parked the car and walked toward the shop, one foot clean and one foot muddy. People on the street cast curious glances at her.
Fortunately, Lin Fan had thick skin. If she made eye contact with them, she would even offer a brief smile.
She finally found the shop and ordered a hand-ground coffee to go at the counter. As she was about to pay with her phone, she carelessly pulled out the enforcement certificate she had tucked into her bag. It landed right in front of the nervous-looking proprietress.
The black leather enforcement certificate, embossed with the court emblem, looked no different from the Public Security Bureau’s certificate, immediately catching the proprietress’s eye.
“Comrade!”
“?” Lin Fan paused while entering her payment code, looking up in confusion at the proprietress, who had suddenly lowered her voice.
“Police Comrade!” The proprietress leaned in with a look of alarm. “I was hesitating whether to call the police. You’ve come at a perfect time. I feel there’s something wrong with that table of customers. The man seems like a bad person.”
“How so?”
“The man brought a young girl in to eat. The man is particularly sleazy, and the girl looks like a minor. When I delivered the milk tea earlier, I overheard them. It sounds like the man is insisting on taking the girl to a bar.”
“What do you think their relationship is?”
“I intentionally pretended to walk past just now. It seems they met online. I’m mainly worried something might happen, especially since the girl looks so young. What if she gets deceived?”
Lin Fan frowned. She finished entering the payment code and put the enforcement certificate into her pocket. “Don’t panic. Please arrange a seat for me near them.”
“Okay!”
Just as the proprietress was about to lead Lin Fan over, a serious female voice rang out in the shop. The woman’s voice was cold and stern, yet it was pleasant, like the copper bells hanging on the corners of the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda, carrying a hint of Buddhist chanting. “Please take out your ID card.”
Then, a man replied, “Who are you! Are you crazy! What ID card! I didn’t bring one!”
“What is your name? Where are you from?” The female voice remained clear, calm, and steady.
Lin Fan was very curious. She sped up, turned a corner, and saw the woman’s back: broad shoulders, long legs, standing upright across from a table with a man and a girl.
The girl at the table had a ponytail, a pink, youthful face, and large, moist, deer-like eyes. She indeed looked like a minor. Lin Fan estimated she might be a middle school student.
The man opposite her had a worrying appearance, with greasy, balding hair and black-framed glasses.
“That’s them,” the proprietress whispered to Lin Fan.
“Don’t panic, let’s see the situation.” Lin Fan’s hand was clutching the enforcement certificate in her pocket, her eyes fixed on the situation over there.
“Please state it,” the woman, whose back was to Lin Fan, repeated.
The balding man looked down at the milk tea in front of the girl, frowned, and replied in a voice that sounded torn from his teeth: “Yeqing City.”
“What is your name and where do you work?”
“Chen Jia. I don’t have a job.”
“Where do you live?”
“Over on Jianshe Road.”
“Why are you here now?”
“Meeting someone I met online. Is that against the law?”
The woman with the pleasant voice nodded. “Thank you.”
She then returned to her seat. A huge green plant in front of her chair blocked Lin Fan’s view, preventing her from seeing the woman’s face.
However, Lin Fan thought, A pleasant voice and a kind heart. She’s a good person with high vigilance.
The man, Chen Jia, was still scoffing sarcastically. “Hehe. All sorts of weirdos out in broad daylight. Nonsense.”
The proprietress leaned over and quietly asked Lin Fan. “What does that mean? Is that all?”
They didn’t understand, but Lin Fan immediately realized. The woman was asking all those questions for the benefit of the girl across from the man. She hoped the girl would be alerted.
Based on years of frontline enforcement experience, Lin Fan also felt that something was definitely off with Chen Jia. Her gaze swept across the couple at a nearby table. Seeing the couple’s hesitant expressions, Lin Fan asked the proprietress to call them over.
The couple cooperated and walked over. Lin Fan showed her enforcement certificate. “I am an Enforcement Officer from the Anding District Court. Did you two see anything?”
The couple looked relieved to finally find “the organization,” and their expressions instantly relaxed.
However, upon hearing “Court,” they immediately called her “Judge.” “Judge, that man put something in the little girl’s milk tea! I didn’t see what it was! Aren’t they talking about hallucinogens online recently? I suspect it might be that!”
Lin Fan didn’t bother correcting the title. Wearing that uniform, she was called all sorts of things: officer, police, security guard, etc.
“Any other information?”
The boyfriend reached out and patted his girlfriend’s back, calming her agitated emotions. He said, “We were listening very carefully to their conversation just now. The little girl should be a minor who sneaked out to meet someone online. The man has been making very crude remarks. Analyzing it from a male perspective, I also believe this man has malicious intentions toward the little girl. Is there anything we can do? We’re only guessing right now. Can we call the police based on this?”
“Don’t panic,” Lin Fan calmly planned. “I’ll go over and confront the man shortly. We’ll go straight to the police station. I’d appreciate it if you two would come as witnesses.”
She then turned to the proprietress. “If a scuffle breaks out, please protect the girl and the milk tea immediately, okay?”
The proprietress nodded, suppressing her anger. “This kind of dirty business done by dirty people appearing in my shop? I’m definitely going after him.”
After getting confirmation from the three, Lin Fan gripped her enforcement certificate and quickly walked toward Chen Jia. “You, come out with me.”
Chen Jia glanced at the enforcement certificate. “Are you kidding me! One from the Procuratorate, one from the Court, what are you doing! I haven’t broken the law.”
“Come out with me!” Lin Fan raised her voice.
Lin Fan didn’t have time to dwell on the “Procuratorate” or “Court” part. She focused on Chen Jia, who then retorted defiantly, “Are you crazy! I’m not going out!”
“Routine procedure! Come out!” Lin Fan’s eyes locked onto Chen Jia’s legs. Years of enforcement experience gave her a sharp intuition, and she was secretly prepared for Chen Jia to try and run.
Chen Jia stood up, darting his eyes around sneakily, and suddenly charged directly at Lin Fan. Lin Fan didn’t panic. She stepped back half a pace with her left foot, immediately tilting her upper body.
She then quickly struck, going straight for Chen Jia’s neck and hand. Her other foot kicked forcefully toward Chen Jia’s knee joint…
It seemed to happen in an instant. In the next moment, Chen Jia was already subdued by Lin Fan in a reverse lock on the floor, his shifty face pressed and contorted against the ground.
“Hooray!” The proprietress was the first to applaud.
The woman who had been sitting nearby stepped forward to help hold Chen Jia down.
Lin Fan freed one hand and casually brushed her messy hair back. “Thanks.”
Looking up, she saw Gu Ye’s cold and beautiful face.
It was her!
Lin Fan froze in place, letting out a somewhat disbelieving gasp. “Gu Ye!”
Gu Ye naturally recognized the Court Officer Lin who had been so “authoritative” at the hospital.
However, this encounter gave her a different impression of the officer. At least, her physical skills were undeniably impressive.
Hearing Lin Fan call her name, she nodded at Lin Fan without any expression, showing neither a smile nor any politeness.
She seemed completely closed off.
