- Chapter 30.1 - The Alluring Actress and the Gloomy Heiress
The next day, before dawn had even broken, Chu Ning rushed to the hospital, hoping to help her grandfather with the discharge procedures.
But when she arrived, she found everything had already been taken care of.
The other bed in the ward was already occupied by a new patient, while Secretary Jiang, who had served her grandfather for years, along with security personnel sent by the security company, had already packed up her grandfather’s belongings.
Around 8:30 a.m., the group arrived at the Chu family estate.
Chu Tianheng and Chen Yufen had also received word that the old master would be returning home early that morning.
As the elevator doors opened, Chu Tianheng had his arm around Chen Yufen’s shoulder, whispering something intimately.
Hearing the commotion behind them, the two quickly turned around.
Chu Tianheng hurried forward, forcing a delighted expression. “Dad, you’re finally back! You have no idea how worried everyone at the company has been about you all this time.”
Old Master Chu glanced sideways at him, his tone devoid of any courtesy. “My apologies for interrupting the sweet romance of you two young lovebirds.”
Chen Yufen, oblivious to the old man’s sarcasm, mistook it for teasing and coyly replied, “Dad, don’t tease us like that. We’re in our forties now, how can we still be called young lovebirds?”
Chu Tianheng’s heart sank. The old man was definitely hinting at something.
Sure enough, Old Master Chu responded with a half-dark smile, “Now you’re in your forties, but you first met when you were just thirteen or fourteen. Doesn’t that count as young lovebirds?”
Chen Yufen’s lips parted slightly as she let out a soft, “Huh?”
Beside her, Chu Tianheng’s mind raced, his expression turning serious. “Dad, isn’t that just some baseless rumor spread by idle gossips at the company? Has someone been stirring up trouble in front of you again, trying to drive a wedge between us?”
Old Master Chu extended his hand, and Chu Ning pulled a yellowed photograph from her bag and handed it to him.
The old man held the photo up to Chu Tianheng’s face. At the top, the words were clearly printed: “Class 3 Graduation Photo, Ningyang Middle School, 1986.”
“The third student in the second row and the sixth student in the fourth row, they look awfully familiar. Could they be you and Chen Yufen?” Old Master Chu asked knowingly.
Before Chu Tianheng and Chen Yufen married, the old man had investigated Chen Yufen’s past work history. However, some records held by state institutions were beyond his reach.
Moreover, in the 1980s, with the internet still undeveloped, academic records weren’t digitized. The investigation had only revealed that she had attended high school in Haicheng.
This time, with his suspicions about Chu Tianheng rekindled, Old Master Chu commissioned a deeper investigation into his son’s background.
The agency went directly to Chu Tianheng’s middle school and combed through the archives, unexpectedly discovering this graduation photo with Chen Yufen in it.
Chen Yufen, frozen by the sofa, quickly defended herself. “Society was very conservative back then. Male and female students weren’t even allowed to talk to each other. I transferred to Ningyang Middle School in my third year and never had any interaction with Tianheng.”
Seizing her explanation, Chu Tianheng chimed in earnestly, “I was young back then, completely focused on my studies. I wasn’t close with any of my classmates. And after that, Yufen and I never saw each other again until after we got married and reminisced about the past, only then did we realize we’d been middle school classmates.”
No sooner had he finished speaking than the elevator doors chimed open once more.
Chu Xiao sat in a wheelchair as Manager Wang pushed him into the grand hall on the first floor of the villa.
Everyone turned to watch Chu Xiao enter, his face dark with anger.
When Manager Wang personally “escorted” Chu Xiao out of the hospital, he had felt uneasy.
According to his assistant, the organization threatening Chu Ning’s safety had been completely dismantled, but the two men who had beaten him had vanished without a trace.
His right leg was badly injured, yet Manager Wang had been adamant about taking him away from the hospital. He couldn’t shake the feeling that the situation awaiting him upon his return would be grim.
And he wasn’t wrong today was indeed not a good day for him.
“Perfect timing,” Old Master Chu said lightly. “Then tell me, how did he come to be here when you haven’t seen him since junior high graduation?”
Since Chu Tianheng knew that Old Master Chu had secretly arranged a paternity test for them years ago and was aware of the results, he was confident the old man couldn’t possibly uncover his true relationship with Chu Xiao.
Straightening his posture, he declared righteously, “Chu Xiao may not be my son, but he is exceptionally talented and capable. I brought him into the company because of his abilities, which could drive the Chu Group’s growth. The progress Tianxing Entertainment has made over the past two years is the best proof.”
Old Master Chu didn’t respond. Instead, he gave Chu Ning a meaningful glance. Understanding, she took her grandfather’s arm and guided him toward the sofa.
Only after the two had settled onto the central couch did Chu Ning leisurely speak up, her tone laced with sarcasm. “Tianxing Entertainment was small before because the group never prioritized that business. After he took over, you poured endless money and connections into it, did you really think no one would notice?”
Chu Tianheng and Chen Yufen had initially followed Old Master Chu to sit on the two-seater sofa to the left.
Hearing Chu Ning expose his schemes, Chu Tianheng angrily snapped, “What do you know? Since when do you have a say in company matters?”
Old Master Chu’s face darkened instantly at his granddaughter being scolded, his eyes sharp as knives. “Which part of what she said was wrong?”
Knowing how much the old man doted on Chu Ning, Chu Tianheng faltered under the rebuke and quickly defended himself. “Business matters should be analyzed by professionals. Ningning just graduated high school, she doesn’t understand anything. The success of Tianxing Entertainment can’t be judged by her words.”
Chu Tianheng kept emphasizing “professionals,” clearly trying to elevate Chu Xiao while belittling Chu Ning.
Old Master Chu found it laughable. He glared at Chu Tianheng and said, “In matters of the Chu family, my own granddaughter, Chu Zhenhua’s flesh and blood, has no say but this bastard you and Chen Yufen produced does?”
As he spoke, he shot a pointed look in Chu Xiao’s direction.
Chu Tianheng and Chen Yufen gasped in shock.
Then Chen Yufen burst into loud sobs. “Since when is Chu Xiao some bastard between me and Tianheng? Old Master, you’re slandering my innocence! Besides, didn’t you arrange a paternity test back then?”
Hearing this, Chu Tianheng inwardly cursed her stupidity.
Old Master Chu exchanged a glance with Chu Ning before replying with amusement, “Oh? How did you know I arranged a paternity test for them? You must have quite the connections at Yihe Hospital.”
Glancing at Chen Yufen, who was still pretending to cry beside him, Chu Tianheng steeled himself and quickly spoke up to divert the topic, attempting to play the victim and turn the tables: “I get it now. I’ve worked diligently in the group for over a decade, and Chu Xiao has been running around handling Tianxing Entertainment’s business. Now that the company is on track, you’re ready to kick us out, just like slaughtering the donkey once the mill’s done grinding.”
“If this is how you want to treat us, I have nothing more to say. But please don’t smear our reputations with baseless accusations!”
Old Master Chu and Chu Ning remained silent, simply watching Chu Tianheng’s performance with cold detachment.
Unexpectedly, Chu Tianheng doubled down, milking his victim act without end.
“Chu Yunshu back then had no sense of shame, turning the company into a complete mess. She neglected her children, spending all her time indulging in debauchery outside. Meanwhile, I was breaking my back at work and playing both father and mother at home.”
Before he could finish, Chu Ning didn’t hesitate for a second. She grabbed the teacup beside her and hurled it straight at Chu Tianheng. “How dare you speak about my mother like that!”
The teacup struck Chu Tianheng squarely on the head, shattering with a sharp crack.
Shards scattered noisily across the floor as a gash appeared on Chu Tianheng’s forehead, blood oozing out.
Seeing her husband bleeding, Chen Yufen immediately sprang up like a wild beast, lunging at Chu Ning while screeching, “I’ll kill you today, you ungrateful little bitch!”
However, the dozen or so security personnel waiting outside had rushed in the moment they heard the teacup shatter. They burst through the door just in time to intercept Chen Yufen before she could reach Chu Ning.
Two guards pinned Chen Yufen to the ground, but her mouth never stopped, spewing curses: “You vile scum! You ignore someone beating their own father but dare to bully a decent woman like me!”
One of the guards, annoyed by her noise, pressed a knee against her throat, silencing her.
Chu Tianheng tried to rise and help his wife, but two burly guards on either side clamped down on his shoulders, forcing him back onto the sofa. He could only sit there helplessly as blood trickled down, blurring his vision.
Chu Xiao, seeing his mother humiliated like this, ignored the injury to his right leg. Gripping the wheelchair handles, he forced himself up on his left leg.
Wang, the manager standing behind the wheelchair, didn’t stop him, knowing he posed little threat.
“Let go of my mother!” Chu Xiao roared. “If you want me gone, fine! But don’t you dare slander her! You think everyone’s like your whore of a mother, tangled in all sorts of filthy business?”
Hearing such venomous words directed at his daughter, Old Master Chu clenched his fists.
But Chu Ning was already on her feet. With a running start, she launched a flying kick that sent Chu Xiao sprawling. She then straddled him, raised her right hand, and slapped him over a dozen times, cursing with each strike: “That’s for your filthy mouth! And that! And that!”
Xiao Mi, hovering in the air as a silent observer, had been calmly watching the drama unfold. But now, seeing Chu Ning break character and violently attack Chu Xiao, even she was stunned, her jaw nearly dropping.
Chu Ning poured all her strength into beating Chu Xiao. His cheeks swelled rapidly, and blood seeped from the corner of his mouth.
Chen Yufen and Chu Tianheng, seeing their son being beaten, struggled desperately to intervene.
But Chen Yufen remained pinned to the floor, immobile, while Chu Tianheng, restrained by two young, muscular guards, couldn’t move an inch forward.
Only when her hand began to ache did Chu Ning finally stop. She returned to the sofa, pulled out the paternity test from her bag, and hurled it violently into Chu Xiao’s face: “Take a good look! Who’s the real disgrace here? Who’s the shameless woman who got pregnant out of wedlock with a bastard child? And who’s the ungrateful wretch who brought their illegitimate spawn into my Chu family!”
Chu Xiao’s left cheek was swollen from the blow, leaving only his right eye able to see.
He picked up the report and read the words: Comparison of loci on the Y chromosome confirms that Chu Xiao and Chu Hui are paternal brothers.
Instantly, the world seemed to spin around him, and his vision darkened.
Before, Chu Tianheng had told him that Chu Ning was the illegitimate child of their mother, Chu Yunshu, born from an affair. He had demanded that Chu Xiao join the Chu Corporation, work hard, seize control of the family business, and help Chu Tianheng vent his anger.
Chu Tianheng had even promised him that he would treat his mother well and hand over everything he owned to him and his mother.
Chu Xiao had always believed he was righteous, that plotting Chu Ning’s death was simply removing a bastard who never should have existed in the first place.
But now, the truth was telling him that he was the bastard!
At this moment, the Chu family patriarch also stood up and walked over to Chu Tianheng. “You brought your bastard into my Chu family and even let him infiltrate the corporation wasn’t your plan to steal the nest from the rightful owner?”
“Guards!” the old man commanded. “Throw these three ungrateful wretches out!”
The security personnel showed no expression, neither joy nor sorrow, as they coldly dragged the three out. After a long walk, they were dumped outside the estate gates.
Exhausted from the emotional turmoil, Chu Ning finally calmed down, her body drained of strength as she slumped onto the sofa.
The patriarch, heartbroken for his granddaughter, hurried over and gently stroked her head. “Ningning, my dear, they’ll never be able to hurt you again.”
But Chu Ning frowned. “Grandfather, are we just letting them walk away like this?”
The old man patiently explained, “He’s been lurking in the Chu family for years, even enduring a decade of widowhood to lull me into complacency. That alone proves he has a meticulous plan and likely powerful backers. If we want to live in peace, we must uproot every last threat to the Chu family. And to expose whoever stands behind him, we’ll need these three to lead us to them.”
Chu Ning leaned her head against her grandfather’s shoulder, savoring this brief moment of tranquility.
Outside, Secretary Jiang, who had been waiting, finally entered with a group of high-ranking executives from the company once the commotion settled.
After exchanging a nod with Manager Wang, he made his way to the patriarch’s side.
However, when Xiao Mi saw the group of people, she froze, one face among them looked strangely familiar.
After a dazed moment, she blinked, searching her memories for where she had seen this person before.
“Oh! My! God!” she gasped aloud.
“Ningning, what did you say?” The patriarch turned to look at Chu Ning beside him.
Chu Ning replied first, “I didn’t say anything.”
Then she, too, was puzzled. She had clearly heard a sweet voice saying something, but there were no children in the room.
Xiao Mi no longer cared about observing Chu Ning’s next moves or plans. Instead, she flew straight toward the film set, she couldn’t wait to tell Ye Zhixia this huge news!
When she arrived at the set, she used her perception to locate Ye Zhixia and darted urgently in that direction.
Ye Zhixia had just finished filming her scene and was resting under the shade of a tree.
“Xiaxiaxiaxiaxia!”
“Minister Ye, Minister Ye, Minister Ye!”
Little Mi couldn’t keep her mouth shut.
Ye Zhixia was startled into sitting bolt upright from her reclining chair and hurried off in the direction with fewer people.
Though Little Mi was small in stature and her voice wasn’t loud, the calls she made to Ye Zhixia were shouted right from her mouth!
Fortunately, there was no one around, otherwise, the sudden disembodied voice would have been terrifying.
Ye Zhixia pulled out her phone, pretending to stand aside and play with it, then thought inwardly: Little Mi, calm down! Whatever it is, don’t make a scene!
Little Mi continued flitting about anxiously, her heart too agitated and flustered to communicate telepathically.
So instead, she chose to lean close to Ye Zhixia’s ear and whisper her discovery.
“Little Mi, you’ve done great! Tonight, dessert is on me!” Ye Zhixia couldn’t help but blurt out.
“No, no, I want it now! Xiaxia, go get it for me!” Little Mi flew to Ye Zhixia’s hand, clinging to her fingers and shaking them.
Ye Zhixia pulled out her phone and checked the screen, it was almost lunchtime. After confirming with the crew that she had no more scenes, she rushed to a small shop near the film set to buy a cake and soda combo.
At noon, Little Mi transformed into a little girl in Ye Zhixia’s room, devouring the sweet cake in big mouthfuls.
“Slow down, don’t choke,” Ye Zhixia cautioned between bites of her own meal.
Little Mi set down her tiny spoon, swallowed the cake in her mouth, and then boasted, “Thanks to my sharp memory, I recognized right away that the assistant by that nasty old man’s side looked exactly like the contact Li Qiang described!”
Ye Zhixia then recalled the details of Li Qiang’s interrogation and held out her hand. “Give me that portrait you tucked away earlier, let me see it.”
Little Mi rummaged through her small qiankun pouch for a while before pulling out a crumpled piece of paper and handing it to Ye Zhixia, letting out an embarrassed little chuckle.
“This portrait is all warped! How am I supposed to see anything?” Ye Zhixia frowned in annoyance.
“No, it’s fine!” Little Mi argued. “Xiaxia, when you see that old man, you’ll definitely recognize him! He, he’s super yellow!”
Ye Zhixia raised an eyebrow. “Yellow?”
Little Mi nodded vigorously like a pecking chick. “Yes! You’ll know when you see him!”
Then she picked up her spoon and resumed stuffing her face.
Ye Zhixia, however, mulled over what this “yellow” could mean. Did it refer to a preference for yellow clothing, or was it about being flashy with gold and jewelry?
Lunch break passed quickly. Little Mi stayed behind to rest, while Ye Zhixia still had scenes to film in the afternoon.
The temperature had climbed to 35 degrees Celsius. The actors’ makeup wouldn’t last more than a few hours before sweat and oil ruined it.
Those with lighter makeup could just touch it up, but those with more elaborate looks had to remove and reapply it entirely.
Bai Xin’s makeup today was particularly intricate, and by noon, she was already sweating so much her foundation was running.
So she removed her makeup at lunch and arrived early in the afternoon to wait for the makeup artists to start work.
Ye Zhixia, who played a female general with almost no makeup, also arrived early since her scene was first.
“Oh? You’re here so early, Xiao Bai?” Ye Zhixia asked politely.
Bai Xin was sitting in a chair, idly fiddling with her phone. Hearing Ye Zhixia’s greeting, she looked up with a smile. “I’m waiting for makeup. You’re early too, Sister Xiaxia?”
Ye Zhixia returned the smile courteously. “My scene’s first this afternoon. I came early to avoid any unexpected delays.”
Bai Xin had been feeling a bit dizzy these past few days from all the hearsay. Her clever, bright eyes darted around as she surveyed her surroundings. After confirming no one was nearby, she pushed her wheeled chair over to Ye Zhixia’s side and leaned in close.
“Xiaxia-jie, the person who beat up Chu Xiao was really…”
She trailed off mid-sentence, her eyes full of anticipation as she stared at Ye Zhixia.
Ye Zhixia mimicked Bai Xin’s adorable expression, raising her brows and widening her peach-blossom eyes. “He’s done so many bad things, who knows who he might have offended?”
Bai Xin felt Ye Zhixia was playing dumb. She tilted her head skeptically, narrowing her eyes. “Are you sure it wasn’t Second Miss Chu…”
“Pfft, if that silly girl knew how to handle things, would she have stormed into the company herself?” Ye Zhixia waved her hand dismissively.
