- Chapter 29 - The Alluring Actress and the Gloomy Heiress
The tranquil morning sun hid behind the clouds, refusing to reveal itself.
On the film set, birds chirped incessantly, as if urging everyone to rise early and get to work.
Bai Xin, ever the generous one, had prepared extra breakfast for the crew who arrived early.
“Huh? Did the sun rise from the south today?” Bai Xin pushed open the door to the empty makeup room and feigned a high-pitched voice. “I actually got here before Xu Miaomiao.”
“She took the morning off,” her assistant murmured from behind.
Bai Xin’s triumphant expression instantly wilted like frostbitten eggplant. “I woke up half an hour early for nothing…”
Over the past two days, Xu Miaomiao had quietly pieced together the rumors circulating on set and listened to Xiao Jiao’s embellished version of events. She finally confirmed that Chu Xiao’s injuries were serious.
So she made up her mind and requested half a day off from the production.
She set off before dawn, transferring buses three times before reaching the city center. After spending thousands on health supplements at a high-end mall, she hailed a cab to Yihe Hospital’s inpatient ward.
Clutching the supplements, she sneaked into the unguarded emergency stairwell in the basement.
Yihe catered to wealthy businessmen and celebrities, requiring appointments and registrations for all visitors to the inpatient ward.
The last time she visited Hao Ke’er, she had been stopped at the front desk and subjected to several disdainful looks from the receptionist. Only after calling Hao Ke’er’s assistant did they contact the hospital administration to grant her elevator access even sending an escort to verify her identity at the ward, leaving her thoroughly humiliated.
But thanks to that experience, she had discovered a loophole in the hospital’s security.
Carrying the gifts up twenty flights of stairs was no easy feat. Xu Miaomiao took frequent breaks, taking nearly twenty minutes to reach the orthopedic ward’s entrance.
Peering through the gap in the stairwell door, she watched the security guard at the ward entrance for a long time. Only when he headed toward the restroom did she dart forward and slip inside.
Head held high, she adopted the haughty demeanor of a young heiress, strolling leisurely down the hallway while discreetly scanning the rooms through the small glass windows on the doors.
It was easier than expected, orthopedic patients were few, and Chu Xiao’s room door was wide open.
Within minutes, she located Chu Xiao’s room and strode in confidently.
Chu Xiao had just woken up and was still groggy. Hearing the click of high heels, she assumed it was her mother, Chen Yufen, and called out without looking up, “Mom.”
Xu Miaomiao paused mid-step, momentarily speechless.
When no response came, Chu Xiao finally lifted her head. “Xu Miaomiao? What are you doing here?”
Xu Miaomiao casually placed the supplements on the bedside cabinet and smiled warmly. “I heard you were injured and got worried, so I took the liberty of coming to see you.”
“Oh… thanks.” Chu Xiao felt something was off but couldn’t quite place it.
The expensive supplements she had splurged on were completely ignored by Chu Xiao, making Xu Miaomiao’s heart bleed.
Still, she maintained her composure, stepping closer to Chu Xiao with gentle concern. “Did the doctor say how serious it is?”
At the mention of her leg injury, Chu Xiao’s eyes darkened with fury.
“It’s nothing, things will definitely get better.” Xu Miaomiao realized she had misspoken and quickly tried to make amends. “President Chu is young and accomplished, there must be people jealous of you. You must counter them fiercely with your abilities!”
Xu Miaomiao’s flattery hit the mark. For years, Chu Xiao had lived in the Chu family as an outsider, firmly believing that everything he had today was earned through his own capabilities.
Chu Xiao’s expression softened slightly. Seizing the opportunity, Xu Miaomiao pressed on with her suggestion: “Since the enemy has given us this chance, why not take advantage of it? President Chu, you could publicize how you were framed by rivals, then fought back and rose even higher.”
Too much had happened in the past few days Chu Xiao had been beaten, injured, and undergone surgery, leaving him no time to calmly consider his next steps.
Xu Miaomiao’s suggestion was indeed a good one. Since the physical injuries were already done, aside from focusing on recovery, if he could spin this situation to gain reputation and future opportunities, it would at least mitigate some of the losses.
Thinking this, Chu Xiao silently acknowledged Xu Miaomiao’s quick thinking.
“It’s a shame you’re an employee of Yushu Entertainment. If you worked under me, I would definitely value your talents,” Chu Xiao said, looking at Xu Miaomiao with a firm gaze.
To Xu Miaomiao, this sounded like Chu Xiao extending an olive branch. She promptly responded, “Ah… Of course, I’d love to work under a capable leader like you, President Chu.”
Chu Xiao’s expression grew even more amiable, a faint smile appearing. “You’re always welcome to join my team, Ms. Xu!”
After this exchange, each with their own thoughts, Xu Miaomiao bid Chu Xiao a delighted farewell and slipped out of the inpatient ward through the emergency exit.
No sooner had she left than Chen Yufen stepped out of the elevator into the orthopedic ward.
This time, hearing footsteps, Chu Xiao first looked up to confirm it was Chen Yufen before calling out, “Mom.”
Chen Yufen was about to place her Hermès basket on the storage cabinet when she noticed it was already cluttered with health supplements.
“What is this junk?” she grumbled, using her free hand to sweep the supplements onto the floor before setting down her bag.
Chu Xiao paid no attention to these details. Recent events had left him feeling deeply apologetic toward Chen Yufen.
“Mom, I need to apologize to you,” Chu Xiao said, lowering his gaze, his tone humble.
Chen Yufen and her ex-husband had been in a contractual marriage. Chu Tianheng had paid the foolish man a hefty sum, but the man, taking advantage of his position as an adult, had often bullied Chu Xiao.
Back then, it was essentially Chen Yufen who single-handedly raised Chu Xiao. When she could no longer endure it, she had Chu Tianheng step in and deal with the man once and for all.
But Chu Xiao knew none of this. He had always believed his biological father was simply a scoundrel who abused his wife and child, while Chen Yufen was the only one in the world who protected him.
So when Chen Yufen remarried Chu Tianheng, the first thing he did was voluntarily change his name from Sun Xiao to Chu Xiao.
Chen Yufen remained as blunt as ever: “You’re injured, and now you’re apologizing to me? Did they hit you so hard you lost your mind?”
“Mom! Let me finish!” Chu Xiao’s tone carried a hint of impatience.
But he quickly adjusted his demeanor and spoke earnestly: “Actually, the car accident before, I was the one who arranged it. I made you suffer, and I’m sorry.”
Chen Yufen quickly walked to Chu Xiao’s side, her tone laced with reproach: “How could you not inform me about such a big matter? I was dragged to the police station for questioning and nearly scared to death!”
Chu Xiao lowered his head in shame and replied, “Mom, I’m sorry.”
After all, he was her own flesh and blood, how could Chen Yufen truly blame him?
She instinctively shifted the blame: “It’s all that wretched girl’s fault. If she had died in the car accident, that old bastard wouldn’t have had the mind to investigate us.”
“But…” Chen Yufen began to ponder, “This time when I went back, neither the old man nor that little bitch were staying at home. Could it be that you’ve been exposed?”
A mocking smile appeared on Chu Xiao’s face: “Mom, what kind of joke is that? If Chu Zhenhua, that idiot, had really found out, do you think he could keep his cool?”
Hearing this, the weight in Chen Yufen’s heart lifted: “True, he’s been a fool for so many years. Even half a ton of walnuts couldn’t fix that. How could he suddenly become smart?”
“Ah! The IV needle has blood backflow!” Chen Yufen shrieked, then frantically pressed the call button.
A nurse arrived with a replacement IV bag, smiling politely: “Hello, I’m here to change your IV.”
Hearing the nurse’s voice, Chen Yufen snarled viciously: “You didn’t even come to check when the IV ran out! So irresponsible!”
Chu Xiao, hearing his mother yell at the nurse, spoke up in defense: “I adjusted the drip speed, it was running faster than before.”
The nurse immediately cautioned him: “Sir, it’s best not to adjust the speed yourself. Some medications have strict limits on infusion rates. Changing it without permission is very dangerous.”
Chen Yufen, seeing her son being lectured, grew even angrier: “Enough nonsense! You slacked off at work and now blame my son? I’m going to report you!”
Chu Xiao, exasperated, quickly motioned for the nurse to change the IV and leave.
The nurse had no choice but to first disconnect the IV line from the cannula before hanging the new bag and reattaching the tubing.
Chen Yufen continued to grumble incessantly: “Because of your negligence, all this blood was wasted! You should compensate with your own blood!”
The nurse kept apologizing and, before leaving, reminded them: “You can call me when the bag is almost empty.”
Returning to the nurses’ station, the harassed nurse pulled out a civil service exam workbook from the drawer, slammed it onto the desk, and buried herself in furious scribbling.

In the more modestly furnished ward of the affiliated hospital, Chu Ning sat by the bed and said to the resting Old Master Chu: “Grandpa, today’s test results are out. All your indicators are stable. Dr. Li said you can be discharged tomorrow.”
Hearing that his health had met the discharge criteria, Old Master Chu felt greatly relieved.
But since he was about to leave the hospital, it was time to return to the Chu residence and settle matters.
He pointed to the cabinet: “Hand me my phone and call Manager Wang from the security company.”
Chu Ning obeyed, dialing the number and putting it on speaker.
“Hello, President Chu. What can I do for you?” came Manager Wang’s deep voice from the other end.
Old Master Chu got straight to the point: “At nine o’clock tomorrow morning, bring Chu Xiao back to the Chu residence on time.”
However, Manager Wang hesitated: “President Chu, the young master’s legs aren’t in good condition. It’s only been a few days since his surgery. Shouldn’t we—”
“What young master? From now on, you are not to call him that!” Old Master Chu’s voice turned stern.
Manager Wang was clearly taken aback for a second before promptly replying, “Yes! I’ll make sure to bring him before you by nine tomorrow morning!”
After listening to the conversation between her grandfather and Manager Wang, Chu Ning couldn’t contain her excitement. She picked up her phone and immediately informed Ye Zhixia about the plan for the next day.
As soon as Ye Zhixia read Chu Ning’s message, she turned to Xiao Mi, who had been waiting beside her, and issued a stern order: “Tomorrow, when they force him out, you’ll monitor the entire process, no room for error.”
“Yes, Minister Ye!” Xiao Mi raised a paw in salute!
