- Chapter 28 - The Alluring Actress and the Gloomy Heiress
By the next morning, rumors of Chu Xiao being kidnapped and brutally beaten at the company had spread like wildfire.
The entire set was buzzing with gossip, and Xiao Jiao was especially busy, eager to finish her work and then try her hand at something else.
“Xiao Bai, have you had breakfast?” Ye Zhixia asked with concern.
“Yeah, I have,” Bai Xin replied weakly.
Ye Zhixia found it odd that Bai Xin seemed too exhausted from hunger yet unwilling to admit it.
But since they were merely colleagues, she didn’t pry further.
Bai Xin slumped on a chair by the set, waiting with drooping eyelids.
She had indeed eaten breakfast but only because she’d forced herself to swallow a plain steamed bun.
Early that morning, her sister had sent another message, complete with text and pictures. The image showed Chu Xiao’s severely injured calf, bloodied and gruesome, with broken bones piercing through the flesh, exposing the white bone beneath.
Her sister could be so kind at times, yet so cruel at others.
Bai Xin couldn’t forward the picture directly, so she kept the matter to herself.
But when she arrived on set, she realized that somehow, everyone already knew about Chu Xiao’s beating.
By the time Chu Ning arrived with the paternity test results in the afternoon, the atmosphere had shifted.
As she weaved through the bustling crowd, she noticed the fearful glances people cast her way.
Whenever she brushed past someone, whispers erupted behind her. When she turned around curiously, they quickly scattered, pretending to be engrossed in their work.
The set was unusually quiet, with only Ye Zhixia’s voice reciting lines breaking the silence.
Tiptoeing behind the camera, Chu Ning saw that Ye Zhixia was currently performing an emotional scene with Bai Xin.
“General, is there really no other way but to flee?” Bai Xin asked tearfully, her voice trembling.
Ye Zhixia wrapped her arms around Bai Xin’s shoulders and pulled her into an embrace. “As long as you’re with me, I can start over, even if we have to flee to the ends of the earth.”
The camera slowly zoomed out…
“Cut!” Director Kong called out, then broke into a smile. “Perfect, absolutely perfect!”
Ye Zhixia released Bai Xin and was about to leave when she spotted Chu Ning standing behind the director, her face dark with anger.
Ye Zhixia’s mind raced.
Chu Ning had been staying at a police-arranged location, preoccupied with the family feud, she probably had no idea Chu Xiao had been punished.
Was she upset now because something had gone wrong with the paternity test?
The thought made Ye Zhixia uneasy. Moreover, something seemed off about Chu Ning’s demeanor.
Quickly maneuvering around the props, she made her way toward Chu Ning.
Since her scenes for the day were done, she could finally have a proper talk with her.
Instead of calling out loudly, Ye Zhixia took Chu Ning’s wrist and led her away.
The moment they were at a distance, Chu Ning yanked her hand back and said sarcastically, “Why isn’t Xiao Bai coming along?”
Ye Zhixia recalled how Bai Xin had suddenly appeared behind them the day before, speaking loudly and interrupting them. She, too, found Bai Xin intrusive, so she calmly replied, “Let’s go to my room. That way, Bai Xin won’t disturb us.”
Chu Ning felt slightly better hearing that.
Inside the hotel room, Chu Ning pulled a document from her bag. It detailed the comparison results of the Y-chromosome gene loci between Chu Xiao and Chu Hui, concluding that the two were indeed biological brothers sharing the same father.
“With this report, we have more than enough justification to openly expel Chu Tianheng and his faction from the Chu family,” Ye Zhixia remarked with satisfaction as she reviewed the document.
Then, as if struck by another thought, she added, “Has your grandfather been discharged from the hospital yet? If not, he can go straight home, no need to consider staying elsewhere.”
Chu Ning nodded solemnly. “Exactly. That’s what I was planning.”
“And what about those police officers who were following you yesterday?” Ye Zhixia suddenly realized something was missing.
Chu Ning answered truthfully, “They told me I was safe now. Today, their entire team is out on a mission.”
Ye Zhixia understood. The police must have made progress in the shooting case if they had made such arrangements.
She hadn’t expected the police in this world to be so efficient. It seemed Bai Xin hadn’t exaggerated, given how quickly they had taken action, it was clear all parties were paying close attention to this case.
But a new problem arose.
If they were to confront Chu Tianheng and Chu Xiao at the Chu family residence soon, there was a chance they might not even see Chu Xiao…
“By the way, Ningning, it seems Chu Xiao has run into a bit of trouble,” Ye Zhixia said, her voice trailing off, especially when she mentioned the word “trouble.”
“What?” Chu Ning asked, puzzled.
“Rumors are going around that he was injured and hospitalized,” Ye Zhixia analyzed carefully. “You might want to inform your grandfather first. As for Chu Xiao, you two can discuss how to break the news to him.”
Chu Ning thought it over and decided it was necessary to find out exactly what had happened to Chu Xiao before making any decisions.
Leaving the film set, Chu Ning headed to Tianxing Entertainment to gather information about Chu Xiao.
But the company employees, much like those on set, looked at her with fear in their eyes.
Chu Ning stopped several staff members to ask about the situation, but they all made excuses and hurried away.
Finally, she went downstairs and approached a young security guard who seemed naive and inexperienced.
“Hey, why isn’t President Chu at work today?” Chu Ning asked sweetly, pretending to be gossiping.
The part-time security guard turned around and, seeing Chu Ning dressed in a cute and innocent outfit, brightened up.
“Which department are you from? You didn’t hear about what happened yesterday?” The guard covered his mouth with his hand, afraid his supervisor standing in the distance would catch him chatting with a girl.
“I was out on fieldwork yesterday afternoon and missed everything. Could you fill me in?” Chu Ning feigned intense curiosity. “My colleagues are all talking about it, and I can’t join in!”
The guard glanced around to make sure no one was watching, then leaned in and whispered, “Yesterday, some mysterious person showed up out of nowhere and beat up President Chu. The police still haven’t caught them.”
Lowering his voice even further, he added, “My boss thinks it was probably arranged by President Chu’s second sister. After all, she lost the fight with him yesterday.”
“Your boss has quite the imagination…” Chu Ning muttered, though she couldn’t help but think there might be some truth to it.
From a distance, the security captain noticed the young guard talking to a familiar figure. Squinting to get a better look at the woman’s face, he paled when he recognized Chu Ning.
Seeing his supervisor rushing over, the young guard quickly waved at Chu Ning to leave.
But Chu Ning stayed put.
“Miss Chu, this kid is new, he doesn’t know the rules. I hope he didn’t say anything to upset you?” The security captain looked deeply embarrassed.
The young security guard’s face turned even paler than his supervisor’s when he realized the girl he’d been gossiping with was the very suspect he’d been talking about.
“Miss Chu, I didn’t mean it like that…” he stammered, raising his hands awkwardly.
Chu Ning smiled at the security captain. “Just a casual chat.”
Then, she politely bid farewell to both of them and left Tianxing Entertainment.
–
“Grandfather, that’s pretty much what’s happened these past few days.”
Chu Ning sat on the stool beside the hospital bed, speaking softly as she recounted the events to Old Master Chu.
The hospital room remained occupied only by the old man not due to any special privilege, but because the police had promptly assigned personnel to protect his safety after Chu Ning’s incident.
Old Master Chu listened in silence, a weight pressing on his chest, making it hard to breathe.
From absolute trust in Chu Tianheng to the growing suspicion after the poisoning, and now with irrefutable evidence laid out before him, his entire past seemed like a cruel joke.
He had thought he’d found a capable husband for his daughter, turning a blind eye to their conflicts, hoping they’d eventually work things out.
Yet, even until his daughter’s death, he had rarely seen her happy.
Now, the truth struck him like a bolt of lightning, he had invited a wolf into his home.
He placed the paternity test by his pillow, not daring to blink, afraid tears might spill over.
In a hotel near the film studio, Xiao Mi darted around excitedly. “That’s all Chu Ning and the old man talked about.”
Ye Zhixia scratched her chin. “Old Master Chu didn’t mention anything about the Chu family having a more formidable enemy?”
Xiao Mi shook her little cat head. “Nope.”
A look of disdain flickered in Ye Zhixia’s eyes. Was the old man truly this dense, or had age slowed his mind?
Having followed Ye Zhixia for years, Xiao Mi easily read her thoughts.
“Xiaxia, old people tend to be stubborn, stuck in their ways,” she consoled. “Besides, if he weren’t foolish and prone to mistakes, how would the original plot have ended so tragically?”
“If he were as sharp as a tack now after being a complete fool in the original storyline, you’d have to wonder if he was cheating.”
Ye Zhixia found Xiao Mi’s reasoning sound but sighed regretfully. “If only you could tail other people too.”
Xiao Mi shrugged. “Too bad the central system only gave me permissions to follow you and rescue key characters.”
–
In the top-floor office of a towering skyscraper in Haicheng’s city center, a flamboyant man in a purple suit stood in the middle of the room.
“Dad, the people we bribed got caught, and our contacts in other provinces were arrested too. For that useless branch of the family, it’s just not worth it!”
Behind the four-meter-long curved desk, a middle-aged man puffed on a cigar, utterly indifferent.
“The higher-ups are tightening control. It was only a matter of time before these people got caught. Times have changed!” he sighed. “It’s just a shame this last mission failed.”
“But…” The flamboyant man still looked displeased. “They promised to take down the Chu family within five years. Now, it’s probably…”
The middle-aged man scoffed. “A bunch of incompetent fools. Half their plans have already collapsed, and they don’t even realize it.”
“Chu Tianheng and that idiot son of his, Chu Xiao, are about to be kicked out of the Chu family. That illegitimate son’s so-called decades-long scheme? Pathetic. Sewer rats will never amount to anything.”
The alluring man immediately understood that everything happening in the Chu family was within his father’s grasp, and his tense nerves relaxed slightly.
A sly smile curled on his lips. “With their meager tricks, forget about competing with us, they couldn’t even deal with that old fool from the Chu family.”
The middle-aged man swiveled his chair, gazing into the distance through the floor-to-ceiling window behind him, a confident, determined smile spreading across his face.
