- Chapter 26 - The Alluring Movie Queen & The Gloomy Heiress
The mysterious extra, like a storyteller, slammed his phone onto the table with a thud, instantly drawing the attention of everyone around.
“Legends say there are three prominent families in Haicheng, among which the Chu family, having risen within three generations, has the fewest descendants. By the time of Old Master Chu Zhenhua, the family line had dwindled to a single heir.”
“Fortune never comes in pairs, but misfortune never travels alone. After the birth of his eldest daughter, Chu Zhenhua unexpectedly lost his ability to have more children. Thus, he sought talented individuals far and wide, intending to choose one as his son-in-law.”
A fellow extra munching on sunflower seeds chimed in, “So he picked Chu Tianheng, a man who shared his surname.”
“Exactly!” the storyteller affirmed.
“The Chu daughter and Chu Tianheng had a daughter and a son together. One of today’s protagonists is none other than their pampered and delicate granddaughter, Chu Ning.”
“After the Chu daughter passed away, Chu Tianheng remarried, and his new wife’s son became the adopted heir of the Chu family, the eldest young master, Chu Xiao.”
Ye Zhixia nudged the person holding the sunflower seeds and whispered, “Give me some.”
With the seeds in hand, she listened with growing interest.
“At the hour of Mao today, atop the pinnacle of Tianxing Entertainment Tower, two figures stood facing each other!”
Ye Zhixia frowned, thinking to herself: This guy’s exaggerating a bit, isn’t he…
“There stood the eldest young master Chu Xiao, clad in dark brocade robes, standing tall and proud, his eyes gleaming with a cold light, his entire body radiating an icy aura. Opposite him was the second young miss of the Chu family, dressed in snow-white robes, her peerless beauty marred only by the murderous intent in her gaze.”
“Whoa!” The seed-munching extra played along.
“The second young miss struck first with her ‘Falling Clouds Chain Palm,’ forcing Chu Xiao to retreat repeatedly, though she failed to land a single blow. Once Chu Xiao steadied himself, he retaliated with a ‘Seven-Part Thunderous Kick.’ To evade, the second young miss leaped backward in a graceful flip.”
“After the first exchange, neither had managed to harm the other!”
“So they’re evenly matched?” someone from the growing crowd of curious extras interjected.
The storyteller waved a hand grandly. “Both are heirs of the Chu family naturally, it’s a clash of titans, a meeting of equals.”
“The second young miss curled her fingers, her inner energy stirring the surrounding air into a whirlwind, sending withered branches and rotten leaves from the rooftop swirling through the sky.”
“But isn’t it summer? Where did the withered branches come from?” someone muttered under their breath.
Unfazed, the storyteller bellowed, “Suddenly!”
“The second young miss unleashed her ultimate technique, ‘Thousand Mountains Eagle Claw Strike’, attacking Chu Xiao’s crown with lightning speed! Though Chu Xiao dodged with all his might, a few strands of his hair were severed!”
“Enraged by the damage to his prized locks, Chu Xiao’s fury surged. He struck back with an ‘Invincible Swan Fist.’ Despite the second young miss’s desperate retreat, the force of the punch grazed her arm, sending her tumbling to the ground!”
The seed-munching extra gasped. “They’re really going at it?!”
The crowd tensed, eagerly awaiting the next round.
The storyteller sighed regretfully. “But just as the battle reached its peak, several officers descended from the heavens, subduing the two with weapons in hand. The duel came to an abrupt end…”
The tension in the crowd instantly dissipated.
This is a civilized society, how could they really let them hurt each other?
Hidden among the onlookers, Director Kong Sen suddenly spoke up. “Assistant director in charge of scripts and storyboards! Give Xiao Jiao a role!”
Then, turning to the storyteller, Xiao Jiao, he added, “Starting today, you’re joining the scriptwriting team. You’ll be writing dialogue for the characters.”
Faced with this stroke of incredible luck, Xiao Jiao’s eyes rolled as he shouted excitedly, “Great! I can earn double the money now!”
Having navigated the film industry for years, Kong Sen saw right through Xiao Jiao’s little scheme. “Yes, you’ll get paid for both the scriptwriting and acting!”
Standing nearby, Ye Zhixia held a handful of sunflower seeds but hadn’t cracked a single one. She narrowed her eyes, trying to gauge how much truth there was in Xiao Jiao’s account.
If he was merely embellishing the facts, then it seemed Chu Ning had indeed obtained Chu Xiao’s hair, and Chu Xiao had also injured Chu Ning in the scuffle.
At this thought, a wave of concern washed over Ye Zhixia.
“Xiaxia! I’m here!” A familiar, crisp voice reached Ye Zhixia’s ears.
She looked up and immediately spotted Chu Ning amidst the bustling crowd, dressed in a white short-sleeved tracksuit.
Pushing through the throng in a hurry, Ye Zhixia reached Chu Ning’s side, her eyes brimming with worry.
“Ningning, why didn’t you discuss it with me before going to fight Chu Xiao? Are you hurt?” Her voice carried both reproach and unconcealed distress.
Chu Ning calmly shook her head, then pulled a sealed bag from her pocket, waved it in front of Ye Zhixia, and tucked it away again.
Ye Zhixia knew exactly what was inside, Chu Xiao’s hair but what concerned her more was the fist-sized bruise on Chu Ning’s arm.
“He hit you?” Ye Zhixia’s eyes widened, her brows knitting together.
Seeing her distress, Chu Ning quickly reassured her, “Pulling teeth from a tiger’s mouth comes with risks.”
Not wanting to burden Chu Ning further, Ye Zhixia composed herself and said, “Go sit at my seat for now. I only have one scene this afternoon, and I’ll come find you once it’s done.”
Chu Ning gave a faint nod and limped toward Ye Zhixia’s seat.
Ye Zhixia noticed her recently healed right leg seemed injured again, and her anger flared uncontrollably.
The afternoon scene happened to be one where the general raged for his beloved, leaving everyone on set in awe of the actress’s stellar performance.
Bai Xin, however, leaned close to Chu Ning and whispered, “Miss Chu, see how well Xiaxia acts out her fury for me?”
Chu Ning, still immersed in watching Ye Zhixia’s performance, slowly turned to look at Bai Xin, confusion flickering across her face as an uneasy feeling stirred within her.
Bai Xin maintained her signature sweet smile, gazing innocently at Chu Ning.
Once her scene ended, Ye Zhixia felt somewhat better after channeling her emotions into the role.
She hurried over to Chu Ning and coaxed with a smile, “Your leg isn’t doing well. Let me help you back to your room first, then I’ll bring you dinner.”
Chu Ning glanced awkwardly at the police officers assigned to protect her, aware she had already inconvenienced them by sneaking out today.
After Chu Ning explained the situation, Ye Zhixia grasped the gist of her ordeal and the police protection. She then asked her assistant to fetch five servings of food.
After dinner, Ye Zhixia pulled Chu Ning aside, away from the crowd, even bringing a small stool for her to sit on.
This time, Ye Zhixia also blamed herself. Back then, seeing Chu Ning so confident about obtaining Chu Xiao’s hair, she had assumed there was a clever plan and hadn’t pressed for details.
In reality, they could have retrieved Chu Xiao’s toothbrush to extract oral epithelial cells for the DNA test.
But since Chu Ning had already moved out of the Chu household, making it difficult to access Chu Xiao’s toothbrush, Ye Zhixia hadn’t brought it up.
Looking at the bruises on Chu Ning’s arms and her unsteady gait now, she felt she bore a significant portion of the responsibility.
“Large hospitals require the person themselves to bring identification for an official evaluation. For now, we can only have an external agency conduct a private assessment,” she cautiously informed Chu Ning.
Chu Ning nodded: “This is just for confronting Chu Tianheng. It doesn’t need to serve as legal evidence.”
Ye Zhixia understood Chu Ning’s current state of mind. After facing a second life-threatening situation, she must be desperate to resolve this matter as soon as possible.
“The agency I contacted said that with an expedited request, the report can be issued the same day. I plan to take Grandpa back to the Chu family as soon as he’s discharged and completely overhaul the household. But…” Chu Ning hesitated.
“But what?” Ye Zhixia looked puzzled.
Chu Ning pressed her fingers to her temples: “But after this incident, I’m worried they might resort to even worse actions.”
Ye Zhixia wasn’t entirely sure either. Like Chu Ning, she feared their adversaries had far-reaching influence, with connections even in lawful circles.
A clear, bright voice chimed in: “The state takes illegal gun possession very seriously, especially in a first-tier city like Haicheng. Even if this incident hasn’t been widely publicized, there’s definitely an investigation team involved.”
The speaker was Bai Xin.
Both Chu Ning and Ye Zhixia were startled. Neither had noticed when the girl had slipped over to eavesdrop.
Ye Zhixia quickly covered Bai Xin’s mouth, afraid she might reveal more information to outsiders.
A flicker of displeasure flashed in Chu Ning’s eyes at Ye Zhixia’s action.
This fleeting emotion didn’t escape Bai Xin’s notice.
Her heart leapt with joy: She’s angry, she’s angry! The little beauty is angry! We’re one step closer to hugs and kisses!
To push things further, Bai Xin raised her hand and placed it over Ye Zhixia’s slender fingers, then gripped them tightly and pulled downward.
Seeing their physical contact, Chu Ning’s expression stiffened.
Fortunately, Ye Zhixia wasn’t accustomed to overly intimate physical contact either and quickly stepped back, lowering her voice: “Xiao Bai, keep it down. Don’t scare the others.”
Hearing her address Bai Xin so familiarly, Chu Ning’s expression darkened further.
“Ningning, are you feeling unwell?” Ye Zhixia’s gaze was full of concern as she looked at Chu Ning.
Just then, Ye Zhixia’s phone chimed with a WeChat notification.
Thinking it might be something important, she quickly pulled out her phone to check. It turned out to be a casual chat group she rarely participated in, she’d forgotten to mute the notifications.
But the content made her freeze: it was footage of Chu Ning’s altercation with Chu Xiao that morning.
She turned down the volume and played the video.
In the video, Chu Ning stormed into the office area and immediately slapped Chu Xiao across the face. Chu Xiao was stunned for a moment before retaliating with a vicious kick to Chu Ning’s right leg.
Seizing the moment, Chu Ning grabbed Chu Xiao’s hair and yanked downward.
Chu Xiao, in pain, threw a punch at Chu Ning’s abdomen. Chu Ning dodged, but the blow still struck her arm, causing her to lose balance and fall to the ground.
In the blink of an eye, security and police arrived to separate the two.
Chu Xiao, guilt-ridden, didn’t dare say much, and Chu Ning remained silent as well. The commotion ended as abruptly as it had begun.
Outside the video, Ye Zhixia was already seething with rage. Her heart raced, blood surged to her head, and her cheeks and ears burned crimson.
Because she was so tall, Chu Ning and Bai Xin had no idea what she had seen.
Clenching her fists, she forced a faint smile. “You go back with the police for now. I have something to take care of tonight.”
Chu Ning glanced at Bai Xin, who was standing beside her and had been affectionately called “Xiao Bai,” then said with a haughty tone, “Fine, I’m leaving. Bye.”
Ye Zhixia had no mind to dwell on Chu Ning’s mood at the moment. After absentmindedly seeing her off, she left Bai Xin behind and hurried back to her room.
“Xiao Mi, my combat suit and teleporter!” She couldn’t wait another second.
