- Chapter 21 - The Alluring Actress and the Brooding Heiress
A few years ago, after the passing of his wife, Old Master Chu deeply felt the loneliness of a widower lying alone on his pillow. Moved by compassion, he relented and allowed Chu Tianheng to remarry. During that time, he even introduced him to many suitable women, but Chu Tianheng refused them all for various reasons.
Later, however, Chu Tianheng met Chen Yufen at the hospital, and sparks of love flew between them. Seeing that his son was smitten, Old Master Chu did not stand in their way.
At the time, Chu Tianheng’s reasoning was that Chen Yufen was a caring person, and marrying her would be good for his two young children.
Old Master Chu had once suspected that the two might have known each other before. After all, Chen Yufen wasn’t particularly striking in appearance her only notable quality was her hardworking nature, honed through years as a caregiver. But the Chu family had no shortage of servants.
Most importantly, Chen Yufen came with a son of her own.
That Chu Tianheng was willing to marry her left not only Old Master Chu puzzled but also many in the company baffled.
With Chu Tianheng’s capabilities and resources, marrying a young and beautiful woman wouldn’t have been an issue. Rumors quickly spread that Chen Yufen was Chu Tianheng’s old flame, and the two had rekindled their relationship after both losing their spouses in middle age.
Old Master Chu didn’t confront the parties involved about these rumors. Instead, he quietly investigated the backgrounds of the mother and son. During a routine health check-up, he discreetly arranged for samples from Chu Xiao and Chu Tianheng to be collected for a paternity test.
The investigation confirmed that their backgrounds were indeed clean, and the test results showed that Chu Tianheng and Chu Xiao were not father and son. Only then did Old Master Chu set aside his doubts.
After Chen Yufen married into the Chu family, she worked diligently and treated everyone with respect.
Yet, for some reason, his youngest granddaughter, Chu Ning, had always treated Chen Yufen and Chu Xiao with cold indifference. Combined with his own earlier misunderstandings, Old Master Chu felt a sense of guilt toward the mother and son. As compensation, he gave Chu Xiao many opportunities in the family business.
Chu Xiao proved himself worthy. After taking over Tianxing Entertainment, he achieved significant growth in performance within just two or three years, earning the Chu family’s admiration.
Because of that paternity test, Old Master Chu attributed Chu Tianheng’s favor toward Chu Xiao to simple appreciation for a capable young man, just as he had once admired Chu Tianheng decades ago.
But recently, when Chen Yufen was suspected of harming Chu Ning, Chu Tianheng didn’t rush to defend his daughter. Instead, he spoke up for Chu Xiao first, completely blurring the lines between family and outsiders.
Now, it seemed that if Yihe had issues, the authenticity of that paternity test might also be in question.
Remembering how he had scolded his precious granddaughter Ningning for the sake of Chen Yufen and her son, Old Master Chu was filled with regret.
Keeping his composure, he narrowed his eyes and couldn’t help but sigh.
Ye Zhixia, seeing that everything had been settled, suddenly felt exhaustion wash over her like a tidal wave.
“Old Master Chu, Ningning, I haven’t slept all night, I need to go home and rest,” she said, yawning.
Chu Ning hurriedly urged her to go home and rest, reminding her not to drive, as drowsy driving could be dangerous.
Once Ye Zhixia left, Old Master Chu opened his eyes, glanced warily toward the door, and then spoke in a clear, serious tone: “Is Xiao Ye gone? Ningning, there’s something important I need to tell you.”
Ye Zhixia had indeed left, but Xiao Mi, who had been dozing on a chair, only just woke up.
She was inwardly annoyed that Minister Ye hadn’t taken her along when she suddenly heard Old Master Chu mention something important.
Xiao Mi, who had just been about to chase after them, immediately retracted her paws and lay down, intently waiting for Old Master Chu to speak.
She wanted to see what important matter required excluding the very person who had saved their lives.
Chu Ning obediently sat by her grandfather’s hospital bed as the old man took her hand. “Ningning, after I’m discharged, I’ll move into your apartment.”
Chu Ning frowned in confusion. “Didn’t we just agree you’d go to the welfare home?”
Old Master Chu shook his head with a smile and explained, “This time, I don’t want anyone to know I’ve left. The welfare home has too many people, word could easily get out. Your small apartment is more suitable.”
Chu Ning also felt her grandfather’s reasoning was thorough and nodded with a smile. “Alright, I’ll tell Sister Xiaxia later.”
But Old Master Chu’s expression suddenly darkened as he raised a hand to stop her. “Don’t tell Xiao Ye! That’s the second thing I wanted to discuss with you. You must learn from your mistakes. Li Jinqiu was your close friend for years, yet she still stabbed you in the back. How long have you even known Xiao Ye?”
Hearing her grandfather’s lingering reservations about Ye Zhixia, Chu Ning’s voice grew urgent. “But Sister Xiaxia has saved me twice! Last night, when you were barely conscious, she insisted on bringing you to the hospital that’s how we discovered all this. She’s really different!”
Old Master Chu reached out and gently patted Chu Ning’s head. “Child, being kind to her and staying wary of her aren’t mutually exclusive. All these years, I’ve treated your father well too, but that didn’t stop me from keeping control of the company’s power.”
Chu Ning understood. Her grandfather had always been stubborn about his views. Back then, no matter how much she cried or protested, she couldn’t shake his trust in Chen Yufen and her son. Arguing about Ye Zhixia now was pointless only time could prove everything.
“Alright, Grandfather,” Chu Ning conceded.
Afterward, Old Master Chu recounted the previous paternity test he had arranged for Chu Tianheng and Chu Xiao, bluntly stating that the report might have been falsified.
Chu Ning wasn’t too surprised after hearing the full story. She already knew quite a bit, but as a child, her words carried little weight, and she lacked concrete evidence.
Moreover, speaking up would have tarnished her mother Chu Yunshu’s reputation. So for all these years, she had sealed away those old memories in her heart, never sharing them with anyone.
“Leave the paternity test to me,” Chu Ning volunteered.
Evidence like a paternity test would speak far louder than her words ever could.
Old Master Chu clasped her shoulders with both hands. “You’ve grown up. It’s time you learned to handle things.”
Xiao Mi, who had been eavesdropping all this time, had long been restless. Seeing the conversation shift to small talk, she finally left the ward in a huff.
By the time Xiao Mi flew home, Ye Zhixia had just arrived at the door.
“You’re pretty quick. I was going to teach you a little lesson,” Ye Zhixia teased in a drowsy voice. “See if you dare lag behind me next time.”
She felt light-headed, even struggling to keep a firm grip on her keychain.
Xiao Mi hung her head without responding, simply following Ye Zhixia inside.
Ye Zhixia had a cleanliness obsession. No matter how tired she was, she had to shower before sleeping especially after a night of shuttling between the banquet, the Chu estate, and the hospital, leaving her drenched in sweat.
Steam fogged up the bathroom mirror as the warm spray from the showerhead cascaded over Ye Zhixia’s shoulders and neck, bringing her immense comfort.
Little Mi had now transformed into a cow-patterned kitten, feeling very sleepy but still obediently crouching by the bathroom door, waiting. She had long grown accustomed to falling asleep with Ye Zhixia.
“Little Mi? Help me find the contact information for the welfare home. I’ll arrange a place for the old man to stay after I wake up,” Ye Zhixia said to her.
Hearing this, Little Mi, who had been dozing with half-closed eyes, immediately perked up. Furious, she propped herself up against the doorframe and stood.
Noticing that the crouching kitten by the door had suddenly stretched into a long strip, Ye Zhixia leaned out: “What’s wrong?”
“Arrange what? He doesn’t even appreciate it!” Little Mi seethed with anger. “After you left, Old Man Chu said he wanted to stay at Chu Ning’s apartment.”
Ye Zhixia wasn’t angry, just continued lathering herself with shower foam: “I see. No wonder he agreed so readily, just to brush me off.”
Little Mi propped one paw against the door and waved the other: “Our job is to help Chu Ning. Forget that cranky old man from now on! Our kindness was wasted on him!”
Ye Zhixia couldn’t help but laugh at Little Mi’s comical display: “Good kitty, don’t be mad. Old Man Chu is just being cautious.”
Little Mi lowered her paws and took a couple of steps into the bathroom, pressing against the glass shower door: “Cautious? He’s being played like a fool by that live-in son-in-law and some random grandson.”
The sound of rushing water stopped as Ye Zhixia grabbed a clean, thick towel.
Wrapping herself up, she slowly opened the glass door. Little Mi slid down, getting her two front paws wet.
“Step on the mat when you go out, don’t wet the blankets, silly cat,” Ye Zhixia nagged.
Little Mi shook the water off her paws, protesting: “I’m not silly. Old Man Chu is the silly one.”
Ye Zhixia picked up the hairdryer, plugged it in, then crouched down to face Little Mi: “Tampering with medical records is illegal. Even though Yihe is a private hospital, it’s under a major corporation’s umbrella. Pulling this off isn’t easy. To deceive Old Man Chu so meticulously for years, that son-in-law must have some serious backing.”
With that, she turned the hairdryer on and blew a gust of air right into Little Mi’s face.
Little Mi squinted, her ears flattening backward, then bolted out of the bathroom in a flash.
“Hey, didn’t I tell you to step on the mat first?” Ye Zhixia called after her.
But then she realized she’d scared Little Mi off by teasing her, so she let it go and started drying her own hair.
Once her hair was dry, Ye Zhixia finally headed to the bedroom, sinking into her soft, cozy bed for a good sleep.
Little Mi, hearing her deep, steady breaths, peeked out from behind the curtains, her big round eyes fixed on the bed.
Only after confirming Ye Zhixia was asleep did Little Mi leap onto the soft blanket, flattening a small spot before stretching out and settling down.
In her dream, Ye Zhixia found herself in a bright, empty space. Toward the source of light stood two figures one large, one small.
They seemed like people of great importance, and for no reason, she wanted to chase after them. But something held her ankles, rendering her immobile.
A beeping sound echoed through the space. Ye Zhixia looked around but couldn’t find its source.
In reality, her eyes snapped open.
Her mind still foggy, she instinctively glanced down at her feet.
Sure enough, Little Mi had somehow draped her upper body over Ye Zhixia’s ankles. So it was this chubby little thing that had kept her from catching up to those two figures!
She reached out and gave Little Mi’s butt a firm squeeze before picking up the ringing phone by the pillow.
Startled awake, Little Mi sat up and looked toward the head of the bed, only to see Ye Zhixia holding the phone to her ear with a troubled expression.
“Chenchen-jie, if Director Kong Sen didn’t pick her, what good is calling me?”
“What? She’s already on her way here? Hey? Hey!”
Little Mi, who had been planning to retaliate by swiping at Ye Zhixia, quickly asked instead, “Who was that? Is something urgent?”
