- Chapter 19 - The Alluring Actress vs. The Gloomy Heiress
In her haste, Chu Ning failed to notice that Ye Zhixia showed no fear as the traffic officer approached.
Instead, it was Ye Zhixia who reassured her, “Don’t worry, it’s fine.”
With that, she even straightened Chu Ning’s posture.
Seeing the officer already at the front of the car while Ye Zhixia remained unmoving, Chu Ning could only say despairingly, “Xiaxia, even celebrities have to follow the law. I saw you drink quite a bit…”
Ye Zhixia chuckled helplessly, rolled down the window, and silently blew into the breathalyzer the officer handed her.
The device remained silent. The fully geared officer glanced at the display, nodded, and walked away.
“You… how…?” Chu Ning sat sideways in the passenger seat, her face etched with disbelief. “I clearly saw you drink several glasses.”
“Haha!” Ye Zhixia suddenly adopted a playful tone. “Who said the glasses had to contain alcohol?”
Then, switching to a lecturing, elder-like manner, she added, “If you want to drink, do it with friends or family. But in settings where you need to maintain your image, not a single drop should touch your lips!”
“So, I secretly swapped mine for Oriental Leaf tea…”
Only then did Chu Ning realize the reason for Ye Zhixia’s calmness, her tone softening. “So that’s how it was…”
But Ye Zhixia suddenly turned serious. “Don’t just focus on me sneaking in tea. You should also learn from this. As the heir to the Chu family, you must protect yourself at all times.”
At the mention of “heir,” Chu Ning gently corrected her, “The Chu family will eventually be handed over to Chu Hui. He should be the heir.”
Silence filled the car. Ye Zhixia was deeply displeased by this self-deprecating remark.
“What? Like Chu Xiao, you’re not the biological child either?”
Chu Ning sensed the emotion in Ye Zhixia’s words but still explained, “Women aren’t really capable of handling such a large business.”
Ye Zhixia raised her voice. “Nonsense! Women can handle anything!”
“Give me a lever, and I’ll lift the Earth, don’t cage yourself with outdated thinking. Look at Chu Xiao’s sorry state. If he can be CEO, why can’t you?”
Though Ye Zhixia’s tone was stern, clearly criticizing her, Chu Ning felt an indescribable warmth in her heart.
Ye Zhixia drove swiftly yet steadily, and soon they arrived at the Chu family estate.
It was already summer, and walking from the gate to the villa would leave Chu Ning drenched in sweat. So, she tugged at the sleeve of Ye Zhixia’s blazer. “Could you drop me off by the elevator in the garage?”
Ye Zhixia nodded. “Of course, no problem~”
Yet when the car stopped by the garage elevator, Chu Ning spoke again, reluctant to part. “Grandfather is home today. You got along well last time, why not go up and say hello?”
Ye Zhixia didn’t refuse. After their conversation at the hospital, the old man had seemed approachable. A quick visit wouldn’t hurt.
Seeing Ye Zhixia agree, Chu Ning’s fox-like eyes crinkled into delighted slits.
The two stepped out of the car and took the villa’s elevator straight to the floor where the elder resided.
Bringing Ye Zhixia to meet her beloved grandfather made Chu Ning’s steps light with excitement. She rushed to his door and knocked eagerly. “Grandfather! I brought a friend home. Would you like to meet her?”
There was no response from inside.
Chu Ning waited for three seconds first. Seeing that it was still quiet inside, she knocked on the door again, but the response remained complete silence.
“Maybe he’s in another room?” Ye Zhixia reminded her.
“No, Grandpa is usually in his room working or watching TV at this time.” After saying that, Chu Ning pressed down on the door handle.
The door swung open just like that. Chu Ning entered the room, and Ye Zhixia followed behind.
Old Master Chu was clearly sitting on the single-seat sofa and he was awake.
“Grandpa! Why aren’t you answering me?” Chu Ning coquettishly complained.
Ye Zhixia, observing from behind, noticed something unusual about Old Master Chu.
His gaze was unfocused. Though awake, his awareness seemed hazy.
Ye Zhixia quickly stepped past Chu Ning and approached Old Master Chu. “Grandpa Chu, can you hear me?”
“I can hear… I just…” Old Master Chu uttered fragmented words, “feel a little… dizzy.”
Ye Zhixia made an immediate decision. “Take him to the hospital. Now!”
Chu Ning hadn’t yet processed the situation. “To the hospital?”
“Move first, we’ll talk in the car!” This was the first time Ye Zhixia had acted so decisively in front of Chu Ning.
Though puzzled, Chu Ning didn’t doubt Ye Zhixia’s good intentions toward her and her grandfather. She immediately helped support Old Master Chu on one side while Ye Zhixia took the other, guiding him into the elevator.
It was now 10:30 at night. The Chu family’s servants had all returned to their rooms to rest. Chu Tianheng was working overtime in the company’s operations department, and Chu Xiao was out meeting a beauty. The manor’s gatekeeper only noticed Ye Zhixia driving and Chu Ning sitting by the window.
Thus, no one knew that Ye Zhixia and Chu Ning had taken Old Master Chu away in the car.
Ye Zhixia drove even faster than before.
Chu Ning sat in the back, soothing Old Master Chu by rubbing his chest, and anxiously said to Ye Zhixia, “Our family has always worked with Yihe Hospital.”
Ye Zhixia tilted her head slightly to ensure her voice carried clearly to the back. “No, we’re going to Affiliated Hospital No. 1.”
As she spoke, her eyes remained fixed on the road ahead.
“But Yihe has better medical care…” Chu Ning weakly voiced her opinion.
“I know Yihe, the most famous private hospital in Haicheng.” Ye Zhixia’s tone was calm, merely stating facts.
“Ningning, you don’t understand the medical industry. Medicine isn’t just about treating illnesses and saving lives, it also has an academic aspect. Only public hospitals receive state-provided academic support, so the majority of top-tier talent is found in public hospitals.”
“Moreover, the medical system is interconnected. Beyond doctors’ skills, a hospital’s regulations, nurses’ operational standards, and sterile protocols are all crucial!”
“Throwing more money at private hospitals can buy better service attitudes, but it doesn’t necessarily buy better medical expertise.”
When it came to medicine, Chu Ning was indeed an outsider. Though she didn’t fully grasp why Ye Zhixia was saying this, she couldn’t find fault with the logic.
Still, the last time she’d been in a car accident, she had been treated at Affiliated Hospital No. 1. The medical expertise had been impeccable, but the ward conditions and service attitude were nowhere near Yihe’s standards.
Worried that her grandfather might be uncomfortable, Chu Ning hesitated.
But Ye Zhixia didn’t give her time to waver. With the steering wheel in her hands, she covered the one-hour journey in just half an hour, speeding straight to their destination.
The emergency doctor, seeing that Old Master Chu was elderly and his consciousness was somewhat unclear, immediately began examinations.
After a series of procedures ruled out emergencies like myocardial infarction or cerebral infarction, blood tests were conducted for routine blood work, as well as liver and kidney function.
An hour later, the emergency doctor called out at the door of the consultation room, “Is Chu Zhenhua’s family here?”
Chu Ning supported her grandfather and then looked at Ye Zhixia with a pleading expression. “I don’t really understand…”
Without hesitation, Ye Zhixia helped the elderly Mr. Chu up, and the three of them entered the consultation room together to speak with the emergency doctor.
The doctor asked, “You’re Chu Zhenhua’s family, right? There’s nothing major, but his kidney function shows some abnormalities. Does he have a history of diabetes?”
Chu Ning quickly shook her head. “Grandpa is very health-conscious and doesn’t have any of those age-related illnesses.”
The doctor patiently explained, unfazed, “But given his current condition, dizziness caused by diabetes is still the primary consideration. I recommend hospitalization for observation and further testing.”
Chu Ning was still intent on taking her grandfather to Yihe Hospital, so she turned to Ye Zhixia with a meaningful glance.
But this time, Ye Zhixia didn’t comply with her wishes. Instead, she said to the doctor, “We’ll follow your advice and admit him for observation.”
Ye Zhixia knew it wasn’t easy for most people to accept that “money isn’t everything.” Many believed that expensive always meant better.
But when it came to an elderly man’s health, she refused to compromise.
In the end, Chu Ning couldn’t sway Ye Zhixia and reluctantly went through the admission process for her grandfather.
When the resident doctor came to examine Mr. Chu, Chu Ning stood by helplessly while Ye Zhixia observed carefully from the side.
As the doctor checked his mouth, she noticed something unusual.
Around the necks of Mr. Chu’s teeth was a ring of yellow discoloration.
Remembering that the person who had harmed Chu Ning was also from within the Chu family, she leaned in and quietly asked, “Dr. Li, doesn’t this area seem a bit off?”
Dr. Li reassured her, “Elderly people often have dental fluorosis.”
Ye Zhixia shook her head, pulling Dr. Li outside and away from the Chu family members. Her tone was serious and firm. “Doctor, I’d like to request adding a urine test and heavy metal screening for blood and urine to the examination.”
“Of course, family requests are no problem,” Dr. Li agreed.
Ye Zhixia smiled. “Thank you, Dr. Li.”
However, after Dr. Li returned to his office and ordered the tests, he began flipping through medical textbooks on his shelf.
Fresh out of medical school, he hadn’t encountered many cases of heavy metal poisoning. He wanted to understand what symptom had raised the family member’s suspicions.
A few minutes later, he held the book and muttered in realization, “Ah… the cadmium ring…”
This was his first time encountering such a case, and curiosity got the better of him. Taking advantage of the lighter workload that evening, he went straight to the lab to discuss it with the staff.
A few hours later, Dr. Li personally brought the newly printed report to the ward to find Ye Zhixia.
Inside the ward, both Mr. Chu and Chu Ning were asleep. The beds in the public hospital were small, only accommodating the patient.
Chu Ning had dozed off in a chair beside the bed.
Ye Zhixia, preoccupied and wide awake, had stayed up until four in the morning.
In the dim darkness, she saw Dr. Li in his white coat enter the ward holding a few sheets of paper, so she stood up to meet him.
Dr. Li understood her intention not to wake the two sleepers.
Wordlessly, he and Ye Zhixia stepped out of the ward and headed to the doctor’s office.
Dr. Li gestured for Ye Zhixia to sit across from his desk and got straight to the point:
“The toxicology report is confirmed, it’s chronic cadmium poisoning. The presence of protein in the urine indicates some degree of kidney damage. Fortunately, you caught it early.”
