- Chapter 17 - The Alluring Movie Queen and the Gloomy Heiress
The two walked slowly to the balcony railing, gazing in silent harmony at the garden scenery below.
“Found him,” Chu Ning said with a trace of helplessness. “But only his body.”
Ye Zhixia and the kitten trailing behind her were momentarily stunned by the ruthless cruelty of the unseen hand behind this. Yet, they quickly regained their composure.
The brief shock had been out of reverence for life, but given that the assailant had already tried to kill Chu Ning twice, the driver’s death was almost inevitable.
Not only had he failed in his mission to assassinate Chu Ning, making him a liability to be eliminated, but even if he had succeeded, those pulling the strings would have silenced him to protect themselves.
“What a shame. Another lead gone just like that,” Ye Zhixia sighed.
Under the hazy night sky, the soft golden glow of the balcony lights draped Ye Zhixia in a delicate radiance, accentuating her slightly dejected expression.
Chu Ning stole a glance at Ye Zhixia’s face from the corner of her eye and frowned unconsciously. She truly disliked seeing Ye Zhixia unhappy.
“He was just a pawn, like Aunt Wang,” Chu Ning explained. “Aunt Wang pointed the finger at Chen Yufen, but without solid evidence, Chen Yufen was released yesterday.”
Ye Zhixia’s frustration was palpable.
These people must have had ample experience in wrongdoing to cover their tracks so flawlessly and evade justice.
Still, she wanted to comfort Chu Ning. “That driver was the direct perpetrator in harming you. Now that they’re turning on each other, at least it saves us the trouble of dirtying our hands.”
“True,” Chu Ning suddenly looked up at the sky, as if unburdened. “Attempted murder wouldn’t have gotten him more than a few years in prison. Drowning in a filthy ditch like this is a far more fitting end.”
The white balcony railing was entwined with pink roses. Ye Zhixia leaned lightly against it, her gaze tender as she regarded the young woman who had barely reached adulthood.
“Who do you really think is behind this?” Ye Zhixia asked, keeping her voice as gentle as possible.
Chu Ning remained silent, lowering her eyes with a faint smile.
Ye Zhixia grew slightly anxious. She hadn’t yet found the right moment to tell Chu Ning that the mastermind was connected to Tianxing Entertainment. For now, she could only probe indirectly for clues from Chu Ning’s side.
Just as she was about to speak again, Chu Ning said with certainty, “I’ve known who was behind this from the very beginning. But without concrete evidence, no one would believe me not even Grandpa.”
Hearing this, even the kitten seemed puzzled, telepathically relaying to Ye Zhixia: Has Chu Ning misunderstood her grandfather? In the original storyline, he was so heartbroken over her that he passed away. How could he not believe her and instead trust that… that illegitimate grandson?
Ye Zhixia also sensed something amiss. Perhaps after being betrayed and manipulated so many times, Chu Ning had lost all trust in others.
She moved a little closer to Chu Ning and patted her back reassuringly. “Ningning, don’t worry. I believe you.”
Yet, Chu Ning’s mind was filled with the dismissive words of others.
Grandpa had said, Ningning, you’re overcomplicating things. Your father and I only brought Chu Xiao into the company for business reasons.
Li Jinqiu had remarked, Ningning, I heard your family’s new handsome brother is incredibly capable, he tripled Tianxing Entertainment’s profits!
Chu Hui had insisted, Sis, Aunt Chen and Chu Xiao aren’t as bad as you think.
At this moment, she couldn’t suppress the resentment in her heart, and her words were filled with emotion: “Believe me? What’s there to believe?”
Though her tone was harsh, her eyes brimmed with unwillingness and sorrow.
Ye Zhixia took it all in, recalling the original plot, and a wave of tenderness welled up in her heart.
Carefully, she pulled Chu Ning closer to her side: “Ningning, whatever you say, I believe you.”
Leaning against Ye Zhixia’s embrace, Chu Ning gradually calmed down. Though she never expected anyone to trust her wholeheartedly, hearing those words was already a rare comfort for her.
She exhaled deeply, emptying her mind, and unconsciously rested her head on Ye Zhixia’s shoulder.
Ye Zhixia let Chu Ning’s soft hair brush against her neck, then gently nuzzled the top of her head with her chin.
Meanwhile, Xiao Mi, watching the scene from the side, narrowed her eyes and pinched her chin.
Something wasn’t right, Xiao Mi felt it. Minister Ye had never embraced characters in missions like this before!
Xiao Mi flitted around the two, muttering to herself: “Why does Chu Ning seem closer to Minister Ye than I am? I’ll have to ask about this later!”
In the quiet night, a gentle breeze rustled the potted plants on the balcony, each as tall as a person.
Click.
The wooden door handle on the balcony made a sound.
Without hesitation, Ye Zhixia grabbed Chu Ning’s hand and pulled her behind the potted plants to hide.
The pots were half a person’s height, and with the dim lighting, unless someone looked carefully, the two crouching behind would remain unnoticed.
