Chapter 13: Sister, the Modern-Day Spider-Man
Cheng Cheng was quietly watching Song Xiangwan’s movements from outside the ward.
Besides Cheng Cheng, there were two other crew members, ostensibly left to take care of her, but in reality, they were guarding the door of the ward.
Who were they guarding against? The answer was obvious.
Song Xiangwan’s public persona was truly worrying.
But today she was very quiet, as if she had accepted her fate.
She sulked under the covers for a while. Perhaps she couldn’t stand being muffled anymore, so she poked her head out, made eye contact with Cheng Cheng through the glass window on the door, and immediately rolled over, leaving Cheng Cheng only her back.
She was just angry, no big fuss, no drama.
Cheng Cheng lowered her head, her fingers intertwined, her knuckles slightly tense, and her lips bitten bloodless. She knew she had let Song Xiangwan down.
After several rounds of negotiation with Cao Xin, Cao Xin only said she would arrive in Haicheng that evening, as her flight was about to take off, and then there was no further news.
“I’m going to buy dinner. Call me if anything happens.”
“Sister Wan, I’m sorry, I’m really sorry. I didn’t know Sister Cao unbound your account for this.”
The hospital cafeteria was on the basement floor, and Cheng Cheng didn’t go far, just went downstairs and bought some light food.
It was dinner time, and there were quite a few people waiting for the elevator. After waiting for several rounds, she finally managed to squeeze in.
The ward was on the third floor. Just as she stepped out of the elevator, she saw a group of people at the end of the corridor looking down.
“What are they doing?”
“Is someone going to jump?”
“Quick, quick, go find security!”
“But it’s only the third floor…”
Cheng Cheng ignored the commotion, carrying dinner back. She knocked on the ward door, but there was no sound inside.
Looking through the glass window on the door, she didn’t see anyone. Cheng Cheng’s heart sank, and she pushed the door open sharply. The room was indeed empty.
The setting sun streamed in through the window, outlining the figure in the wheelchair. The slanting shadow stretched long.
The pair of cool, clear eyes were gently closed, but the expression on her face still showed a hint of coldness. Her fair knuckles rubbed the armrest of the wheelchair. She didn’t speak; there was only silence.
Xu Zhiyan watched from the side, quietly pulling the blanket higher up on Ming Jin’s legs.
She whispered, “Sister, if you don’t like it, I’ll have someone suppress the trending topic.”
“No need,” Ming Jin slowly spoke, her voice slightly hoarse. She coughed softly twice.
Since it was Song Xiangwan’s intention, she… couldn’t hinder Song Xiangwan’s path…
Isn’t the entertainment industry just like this? All about hype.
This was the freedom Song Xiangwan wanted.
Ming Jin thought this, but the fingers clutching the armrest of the wheelchair couldn’t help but tighten slightly, and her face turned a little paler.
She had mentally prepared for this before returning to the country, so why couldn’t she accept it now?
Ming Jin’s thoughts were interrupted by hurried footsteps and a burst of noise outside.
Xu Zhiyan frowned in dissatisfaction: “Tell the people outside to quiet down. This is a big hospital; why is there no basic order?”
And the hospital management, knowing they were here, couldn’t even maintain basic order.
“Yes, President Xu.” Her assistant behind her quickly walked out.
But she only went out for two or three minutes before returning with a troubled expression: “President Xu…”
“What is it?” Xu Zhiyan’s tone was impatient.
“It’s Song Xiangwan…” the assistant said softly.
The pair of light brown eyes immediately opened, and a cold and imposing gaze swept over: “What about her?”
“She’s trying to jump off the building…” the assistant whispered.
Xu Zhiyan’s heart skipped a beat. She quickly glanced at Ming Jin’s face, cursing the “living ancestor” under her breath, wondering if she wouldn’t be satisfied until she’d infuriated someone to death.
“You can see it from this window.” The assistant quickly stepped forward and pulled back the curtain.
“Sister, she’s always full of tricks, don’t worry…” Xu Zhiyan said as she pushed Ming Jin toward the window.
They were also on the third floor, and Song Xiangwan’s room was to the right of theirs.
With one glance, Ming Jin felt her heart almost stop beating.
That troublemaker was hanging by the window in a patient gown, her two hands tightly gripping the windowsill of the third-floor window, one foot stepping on the edge of the anti-theft mesh below.
She was precarious, looking like she could sway and fall with a gust of wind.
The wind caught her long hair. The setting sun enveloped her. Her phoenix eyes were meticulously calculating the distance between the anti-theft bars.
She wasn’t trying to jump; she was trying to escape, to run to the main gate, to the entertainment reporters, and make everything clear.
Cheng Cheng was gone, and she thought she could get out. But to her surprise, when she opened the door, she saw two burly men guarding it.
Not letting her out, huh?
Then she’d jump down.
It was only the third floor anyway.
She, Song Xiangwan, couldn’t suffer a huge loss in silence.
Song Xiangwan had some dancing skills, and being used to wire work, she wasn’t afraid of heights. All these became favorable conditions for her climb.
But she clearly underestimated the distance between the anti-theft mesh and the windowsill. She stepped out, completely missed her footing, and felt her body tilt and lean downwards.
She forcefully gripped the railing with her hands, which prevented her from slipping off, but half her body was already dangling.
Ming Jin felt her heart pounding wildly, her hands trembling slightly: “Where is the rescue? Haven’t they arrived yet? Xu Zhiyan, go and hurry them up!”
Her heart was restless with Song Xiangwan’s movements. The sound of her wildly thumping heart caused dark spots to appear before her eyes.
But she didn’t show it, just tightly pursed her lips, her face pale as she intensely stared at Song Xiangwan.
Xu Zhiyan was also as frantic as an ant on a hot pan, making one phone call after another.
She didn’t care about Song Xiangwan; she just knew that if this “living ancestor” fell, her sister’s heart definitely wouldn’t be able to handle it.
Cheng Cheng also anxiously peered down from upstairs: “Sister Wan, don’t move recklessly! I’ll find someone to save you right away!”
“Rely on you? To sell me out?” Song Xiangwan gritted her teeth, estimated the distance, and swung herself out with a forceful pull of her arm.
She landed precariously yet steadily on the anti-theft window of the second floor.
Once she reached the second floor, the rest was easy. In no time, she quickly and skillfully climbed down.
Then, without even having time to tidy her clothes, she limped towards the main gate.
It wasn’t that she was injured just now; only upon landing did Song Xiangwan remember that she had sprained her ankle two days ago.
She didn’t care about that now, pushing through the surrounding onlookers and rushing outside.
But the crew members had already gathered: “Miss Song, Miss Song, let’s go back and rest…”
The staff left behind were two big men. Now, in front of the crowd, they didn’t dare to physically drag Song Xiangwan.
They just held hands, blocking Song Xiangwan’s path.
“Get out of the way.” Song Xiangwan’s phoenix eyes glared, full of imposing aura. “If you don’t move, I’ll sue you for illegal detention.”
“Miss Song, you’re making our job difficult.” The staff were also anxious.
They thought watching the door would be enough, but they didn’t expect this “ancestor” to cause such a commotion.
“Miss Song, Miss Song, that’s not what we mean.” The two staff members were so scared their foreheads were covered in sweat.
“Then clear the way for me,” Song Xiangwan lifted her head, pushed away the person in front of her, and walked out arrogantly.
In just twenty minutes, the online discussion was raging, exploding to the point where it couldn’t be suppressed.
In the video released by the media, Song Xiangwan was unadorned, wearing a patient gown, her face slightly pale, but her eyes were bright and lively.
She righteously stated: “I have no relationship with Lu Yuhang. He wants to hype up a CP, and the crew also wants to, but I refuse.”
“I’m stating it clearly right here: I, Song Xiangwan, do not like men.”
“I don’t like any man.”
“I am extremely disgusted by men, and it’s impossible for me to hype up a CP with a male.”
“My Weibo account was controlled. All subsequent posts on that account do not represent my personal stance.”
Even the photos of Song Xiangwan climbing down were posted.
“Sister, the modern-day Spider-Man.”
“With those skills, why are you an actress? You should be a superhero saving the world.”
“No exaggeration, and she even has a sick ‘debuff’ right now. What would she be like at full strength?”
“Don’t you know she was originally a dancer? I heard she also practiced gymnastics when she was little.”
“LOL, Song Xiangwan’s mouth is unstoppable.”
“Song Xiangwan is truly a living person in the mainland entertainment industry.”
“The crew is disgusting. Why force people to hype up a CP?”
“Speaking of which, with a temper like hers, how did she survive in the mainland entertainment industry?”
“Hating men is great! I hate men too. Wan fan +1.”
“Upstairs, welcome to our ‘Wanxia’ fan club. Our fairy sister is worth following.”
“Song Xiangwan’s face is indeed great. Can I just cover her mouth and watch? I really can’t stand her messy statements.”
“Yeah, the people upstairs are all praising her. Could they be bots? I can’t stand Song Xiangwan. Since she joined the cast, cooperating with the drama’s promotion is her job. She’s not dedicated at all.”
“She’s always been like this, acting all high and mighty, putting on the air of a senior and cursing people everywhere. No manners at all.”
“Doesn’t have many works, relying on hyping her ‘true nature’ to get famous?”
“It’s ridiculous. This awful drama, it’s only been filming for a few days, and how many incidents have happened?”
“The incidents are all Song Xiangwan’s fault, okay? What does it have to do with the crew? Don’t drag the other brother and sister actors into this.”
“Now she says she hates men. Didn’t she hype up CPs before? Didn’t she benefit from CP popularity? Disgusting.”
“Upstairs, my sister hasn’t hyped up any CP since her debut, hasn’t filmed any kissing scenes, and has no scandals.”
“As a bystander, I feel sorry for Su Chenxing and Lu Yuhang. Were they bullied by this crazy woman on set?”
“Yeah, Su Chenxing is a sweet girl. Poor thing.”
“Last time she even glared at our sweet girl. No manners.”
Song Xiangwan scrolled through the comment section with her side account, happily liking all the comments that praised her.
Of course, it didn’t do much good, as Su Chenxing’s fans arrived right after hearing the news, and the compliments were instantly drowned out.
Cheng Cheng whispered, “Sister Wan, Sister Cao will be here soon…”
She couldn’t imagine, truly couldn’t imagine, the shock Cao Xin would receive when she got off the plane.
“Let her come. I have a clear conscience.”
“She and the production side both want buzz, right?”
“I’ll just ask: Is this buzz enough? Isn’t this more popular than CP hype?”
Song Xiangwan spoke with excitement and was in a great mood. She even ate the hospital’s unappetizing patient meal completely.
