The Paranoid Female CEO’s Contracted Beauty (Omegaverse) - Chapter 29
Pei Xiaoyu could tell that her father was hiding something from her. She leaned in and said playfully, “Dad, you’re keeping something from me, aren’t you? If you don’t tell me, then I won’t talk to you ever again.”
With a huff, she turned her head to the side and pretended to be angry.
Pei Yuan only had this one precious daughter, and he spoiled her terribly. He was always afraid she might get hurt or upset. The last thing he could bear was seeing her angry.
“Oh no, my sweetheart is upset?” Pei Yuan immediately began coaxing her. “Alright, alright, I’ll tell you everything. Don’t be mad. Let me finish this call first, then I’ll explain everything. Is that alright?”
Pei Xiaoyu blinked, then slowly turned back toward him.
“Really? You’re not lying to me, are you? If you lie, I’ll never forgive you.”
“I’m not lying, I promise,” Pei Yuan assured her.
He made a shushing gesture, then removed his hand from the phone’s receiver and spoke again.
“Li Dahai, everything you just said. Is it all true? You’re not lying to me, are you? You know the consequences for people who lie. Think carefully before you speak.”
Li Dahai answered without hesitation. He had no way out now. He was already at rock bottom, so he might as well gamble everything.
“Director Pei, I swear. If I’m lying, you can punish me however you see fit.”
Pei Yuan glanced at his daughter, then responded in a cold voice.
“Fine. I’ll believe you for now. Don’t let me down.”
“Then about those projects of mine…”
“This won’t be easy. That girl is not like her mother. She’s not someone you can handle with just a few words. It will take effort. But don’t worry, I’ll do what I can. I’ll try to talk to her and convince her to give the projects back to you.”
“Thank you so much, Director Pei.”
“That’s enough for now. I have to go.”
After hanging up, Pei Yuan looked up at Pei Xiaoyu and said nothing at first. He just stared at her with an expression full of concern.
Pei Xiaoyu was startled. Thinking something serious must have happened, she became a little flustered.
“Dad, what’s wrong? Why are you looking at me like that? Did something happen at the company? Or is it something else?”
Pei Yuan did not respond. Instead, he asked, “Xiaoyu, be honest with me. Why did you come back to the country all of a sudden?”
He remembered clearly how, when she was younger, Xiaoyu had adored Xu Qingyan. She followed her around everywhere like a little sidekick and even caused trouble at home for her sake. But the affection was clearly one-sided. Xu Qingyan had never liked his precious daughter.
Because of that, Pei Yuan had always harbored resentment toward Xu Qingyan. His Xiaoyu had everything. She had status, talent, and was even an S-rank omega. She could have any alpha in the world. Yet Xu Qingyan had the nerve to reject her.
Pei Xiaoyu looked confused.
“Why are you asking me that? That’s my business. Why are you suddenly questioning me like this? And didn’t you say earlier that you would tell me what the phone call was about after it ended? Dad, are you going back on your word?”
Pei Yuan patted her shoulder gently and repeated his question.
“Answer me first. Why did you suddenly decide to return? Last time on the phone, you told me you were doing well overseas. You said you had made good friends and wanted to develop your career there. I supported you. I told you to go after what you wanted and that I would always have your back. You promised. So I don’t believe that you would suddenly come back without a reason.”
“Dad!”
“Answer me first.”
Pei Xiaoyu hesitated, clearly torn.
Pei Yuan asked directly, “Is it because of that Xu girl?”
Pei Xiaoyu quickly denied it.
“No. It’s not because of Ayan.”
Pei Yuan knew his daughter well. She never told him what was on her mind, but her face always gave her away. Looking at her now, it truly didn’t seem like she was lying.
“Really? It’s not about that girl from the Xu family? You’re not hiding anything from me?”
Pei Xiaoyu frowned, clearly upset at being doubted.
“Dad, how could you not believe me? When have I ever lied to you? I’ve never once lied since I was a child. And now you don’t trust me? I’m not talking to you anymore.”
She stood up and started walking toward the door.
Pei Yuan hurried after her and gently pulled her back, guiding her to sit in the chair he had just vacated. He patted her shoulders and smiled.
“Alright, alright. It was my fault. I shouldn’t have doubted you. I know you’re the most honest, most obedient daughter. Don’t be angry. I only asked because I care about you.”
“If this is how you care, then you’re being unreasonable.” Pei Xiaoyu stood up again.
“Besides, you’ve been acting really strange today. Asking all these questions and all of them were about me. Let me say this again. I didn’t come back because of Ayan. But your phone call earlier was clearly related to her, wasn’t it? What happened to her? Did something happen?”
But as she thought about it more, Pei Xiaoyu began to doubt herself.
She knew Xu Qingyan well. That alpha was always cautious and thorough. If anything had happened, the media would have picked it up immediately. Someone like Pei Xiaoyu, who regularly followed finance and business news, would have definitely seen something about it.
So it was unlikely to be something serious.
“Dad, tell me already. Are you trying to make me panic? What happened to Ayan?”
She placed her hands on Pei Yuan’s shoulders and shook him hard.
“Dad, what were you talking about on the phone just now? It involved Ayan, right? Did something happen to her family? That can’t be. Aunt Hong is so capable and strong. She would never let anything happen to their family. So, what is it, Dad? Say something!”
Pei Yuan hesitated.
He was no longer sure whether his daughter had truly told him the full truth. Especially if this really had something to do with Xu Qingyan. If he told her everything that Li Dahai had said and Xiaoyu could not handle it, then whatever happened next would be his fault as a father.
“Nothing happened. Stop overthinking.” Pei Yuan sighed and asked softly, “Xiaoyu, when you agreed to go abroad last time, was it really because you had let go of that girl from the Xu family?”
Pei Xiaoyu seemed to realize where this was going. Her expression turned cold.
“Ayan, did she already get married? To another omega? Who is it? Do I know them?”
Pei Yuan noticed the change in Pei Xiaoyu’s expression and hesitated, unsure if he should continue. But Pei Xiaoyu pressed on.
“But if Ayan really got married, there’s no way she wouldn’t have told me. Dad, did you hear this from someone else? You shouldn’t believe every rumor you hear. What if people are spreading lies just to ruin her reputation?”
Even though that was what she said, Pei Xiaoyu felt incredibly uneasy. Besides, this wasn’t the kind of thing people would fabricate. It wasn’t shameful at all. In fact, it would be considered good news for the Xu family.
“Dad, does Aunt Hong know about this? Did she actually approve of Ayan marrying that omega?”
Pei Xiaoyu knew Xu Hong’s character well. She had always been strict about social status and compatibility. Since they were young, she never allowed any omega to get close to Xu Qingyan. She had even once told Xiaoyu that she was the daughter-in-law she had always wanted.
If Xu Hong knew that Xu Qingyan had chosen another omega, she definitely wouldn’t have agreed. Did Xu Qingyan act first and tell her later?
How could she?
“No, no, she hasn’t married anyone,” Pei Yuan quickly clarified. “But she does have feelings for someone else. Xiaoyu, you just need to stop liking her. There are so many outstanding alphas in this world. If she treats you like this, then it’s her loss. My Xiaoyu deserves only the very best.”
Pei Xiaoyu smiled faintly.
“Dad, don’t say that. Maybe others don’t even see me that way. By the way, who’s the omega that Ayan likes? Since she and I grew up together, I should at least offer her congratulations, don’t you think?”
Pei Yuan saw that she appeared calm and unaffected, which comforted him. He replied, “She’s not worth mentioning, really. But since you asked, I’ll tell you the truth. The omega is the daughter of a business associate of mine. Her name is Li Ge. Her father doesn’t even know about it. It’s all his daughter’s doing.”
“I see. I understand.” A flicker of coldness passed through Pei Xiaoyu’s eyes, but it disappeared almost instantly. She smiled again.
“Dad, don’t worry. If Ayan really loves this omega, I’ll give her my blessing. Finding someone you truly like is never easy. As for me, I guess Ayan and I simply weren’t meant to be. I’ll work hard to find someone who truly belongs with me. So, you don’t need to worry about me.”
Hearing her say this, Pei Yuan felt completely reassured. He laughed warmly several times, full of satisfaction.
A few minutes later, Pei Yuan’s phone rang again.
This time it wasn’t Li Dahai, but a business partner calling to go over the specifics of their ongoing cooperation.
Pei Yuan wanted to stay and spend more time with Xiaoyu, but clearly that wasn’t possible now. He apologized to her.
Pei Xiaoyu was understanding and didn’t make things difficult for him. Instead, she gently pushed him toward the door.
“Dad, go ahead and take care of your work. Don’t worry about me. I’m a grown woman. If I need anything, I’ll just ask Secretary Zhao.”
“Alright, if anything comes up, just call Zhao.”
“I know, I know. Now go.”
After Pei Yuan and Secretary Zhao left, the smile on Pei Xiaoyu’s face instantly disappeared. Her expression darkened, and she clenched her fist and slammed it hard against the desk.
The loud bang echoed through the room.
Clenching her teeth, she muttered to herself with icy venom.
“How dare you, you worthless woman. You think you can take what’s mine while I’m gone? You must be tired of living.”
Right after she said that, Pei Xiaoyu picked up her phone and called the family butler.
“Hello, Uncle Wang? It’s Xiaoyu. I need you to help me look into someone. Her name is Li Ge. Once you’ve found everything about her, send all the information to my phone. Please don’t ask what I plan to do. Just know that I need it for something important. Thank you, Uncle Wang.”
Trying to steal from her was a death sentence.
She would make sure Li Ge paid the price.
Even if it was something she no longer wanted, it was still hers. No one had the right to touch it. No one.
Tomorrow, she would return to her Ayan.
