Gazing into Qi Ning’s beautiful, pale eyes, Su Niannian found herself involuntarily agreeing to the proposal.
However, Qi Ning’s next words startled her: “Then let’s do it now.”
“But the others are waiting for us outside,” Su Niannian stammered, trying to reason with her. “Maybe we should wait until later.”
“It’ll be fast. Just a blink of an eye.”
Qi Ning’s response was immediate. Su Niannian could sense a faint, pressing urgency in her tone that left her flustered. After a moment’s thought, she added, “But the tools, we don’t even have the equipment right now.”
“So, Niannian, is that a ‘yes’?”
“I, I guess so.”
“As long as Niannian agrees, that’s enough.” Qi Ning released Su Niannian’s reddened earlobe, a smirk playing on her lips. “Wait here a moment. Leave the rest to me.”
Then, under Su Niannian’s bewildered gaze, Qi Ning walked over to the emergency medical cabinet and pulled out a piercing gun.
Su Niannian was stunned. When did we get one of those in the house?
The piercing gun was matte black, reflecting a cold, metallic sheen. In Qi Ning’s hand, it looked remarkably like a real weapon.
As Qi Ning stepped toward her, one deliberate pace at a time, Su Niannian’s subconscious flared with a warning of danger. A sense of dread took hold, and she stood up, whispering, “Will, will it hurt?”
“I’ll be careful,” Qi Ning replied with a smile.
Su Niannian stared at her. Be careful does that mean it will hurt, or it won’t?
“Sit down,” Qi Ning said.
Her tone was no different than usual, yet Su Niannian felt her skin crawl. After a moment’s hesitation, she obeyed the command. “Then, then please, be gentle.”
Qi Ning let out a soft laugh, neither agreeing nor disagreeing.
Then, before Su Niannian could react, Qi Ning pressed a cotton ball soaked in chilled alcohol against her earlobe.
“Sss.” Su Niannian tried to turn her head to look, but she saw that Qi Ning had already raised the piercing gun. A sharp flash of cold light made her squeeze her eyes shut, freezing her in place.
“Done.”
W-what?
Feeling absolutely no pain, Su Niannian opened her eyes. It’s over already?
Qi Ning pressed a fresh cotton ball to the back of Su Niannian’s ear. After the girl gave a reflexive flinch, Qi Ning spoke: “Are you really that scared?”
Her features slowly relaxed into a helpless, tender smile.
“You didn’t even give me a warning,” Su Niannian muttered. Seeing that familiar smile, she instinctively relaxed, though her voice carried a hint of grievance. “At least let me prepare myself mentally.”
Qi Ning ruffled her hair, her voice soothing. “What is there to fear? I would never hurt you.”
Su Niannian’s face flushed under that doting gaze. She turned her head away awkwardly, falling into a shy silence.
Then, Qi Ning spoke again: “The other ear now.”
Su Niannian stiffened. Maybe, maybe we shouldn’t? Wearing just one earring seems kind of cool.
“Since we’ve done one side, it’s better to do the other as well,” Qi Ning paused, then added, “I’ll warn you this time.”
Her expression was docile and peaceful, yet deep down, she felt a secret thrill at the sight of Su Niannian looking so piteous, unable to look at anyone but her.
Su Niannian always held a certain blind trust in Qi Ning. Hearing her say this, she relented. “Alright then.”
Qi Ning moved to Su Niannian’s right side, pinching her right earlobe and examining it with meticulous care.
“What is it?” Su Niannian grew tense again. Why is she looking for so long this time?
Qi Ning said nothing.
Using her peripheral vision, Su Niannian saw Qi Ning pick up that frightening piercing gun again. She immediately froze.
Yet, after a long wait, Qi Ning did nothing but continue to gently knead her earlobe.
“Qi Ning?” Su Niannian’s panic rose. She was afraid that turning around would cause the gun to slip, yet she desperately needed to know what was happening. “Say something.”
“I was thinking.”
Su Niannian waited anxiously for the next sentence, but it never came.
“Qi Ning.”
The cold alcohol swab touched her ear, instantly silencing her.
“I’m starting now,” Qi Ning said. She was pressed extremely close, and she intentionally or otherwise blew a puff of warm air against Su Niannian’s auricle.
At the sensation of breath against her ear, Su Niannian’s waist felt weak. She bit her lower lip, repeatedly telling herself that it would be over soon.
A few seconds later, Qi Ning pulled back the gun and smiled. “There. All done.”
Su Niannian slumped immediately, as if all her strength had been drained. After dazing for a few seconds, she quietly shifted a small distance away from Qi Ning, her heart still pounding with lingering fear.
“Don’t move. I need to wipe away the blood.”
As she spoke, Qi Ning pressed a new alcohol swab behind Su Niannian’s ear. The cool touch made the girl shiver uncontrollably. Qi Ning watched the small bloom of blood spread across the cotton, her unblinking gaze making Su Niannian’s skin crawl.
What, what’s going on? Qi Ning felt so different from her usual self.
Su Niannian was reminded of the night they encountered the convict; the aura Qi Ning exuded now was remarkably similar to how she had been then. But the feeling lasted only a moment. In the next second, Qi Ning reverted to her normal self.
Was it an illusion?
Because of their past experiences, Su Niannian knew a bit about Qi Ning’s dark side, but the doctor’s usual warmth and brightness made her instinctively ignore it. Now that she had noticed it again, she couldn’t help but wonder: did Qi Ning truly not care about those past events, or was she wearing a mask of perfection every single second?
If it was the latter, didn’t she get tired?
Noticing Su Niannian’s distracted state, Qi Ning blinked and pressed her palm to the girl’s forehead. “Niannian, what’s wrong?”
Su Niannian: “!”
Su Niannian jumped. She hesitated under Qi Ning’s gaze before finally speaking. “You didn’t finish your sentence, what were you thinking about just now?”
“Hmm?” Qi Ning tilted her head, her clear eyes looking entirely innocent. “I was thinking that Niannian’s earlobes are truly beautiful.”
Is that it? But. “I felt like you were angry.”
Su Niannian’s brows were slightly furrowed, her expression so honest that Qi Ning could read it at a glance: I’m worried about you.
Qi Ning’s habit was to deny it, but seeing the concern in those eyes, she changed her response. “You noticed?”
“Yes! If something is bothering you, you can tell me.”
With her new hairstyle and makeup, Qi Ning’s smile took on a sultry, feminine quality. She let her fingertips touch the newly pierced earlobe, letting out a soft sigh. “There is one thing, actually.”
Seeing that Qi Ning was willing to confide in her, Su Niannian puffed out her chest, trying to look reliable. “I’ll help you solve it!”
“It’s just a small thing,” Qi Ning said in a casual tone. “The gown sizes the stylist prepared aren’t quite right. They don’t look like your size at all. So, are they the measurements of a certain friend of yours?”
“The sizes are wrong?” Su Niannian remembered how she had just rattled off random numbers earlier. She completely missed the underlying point of Qi Ning’s words and stood up guiltily. “Are they too big or too small? I’ll tell the stylist right away.”
To Qi Ning, her reaction looked like clear evidence that she was dodging the topic.
Qi Ning’s smile faded. She stood up as well and caught Su Niannian by the arm.
