The Noble Lady Without Magic Aims to Become an Adventurer! - Chapter 98
Like ordinary adventurers, we boarded a shared carriage in the town. Our journey would take us along the northern border of the kingdom, moving counterclockwise through border towns and villages. Traveling to the northernmost village took nearly a month, requiring us to switch carriages five times along the way.
The northernmost village was so small it could almost be described as a settlement on the verge of disappearing.
Its continued existence was likely due to its strategic location as a border village. It served as the first resting point for travelers crossing the border and included lodging for soldiers stationed there to guard the frontier. The villagers lived closely alongside the soldiers and occasional travelers.
“Allen-sensei, what are we supposed to do in this village?” I asked, brimming with anticipation for my first mission.
“Roa, there’s not enough population here for scouting recruits. Our primary role will be adventuring—hunting magical beasts,” Allen-sensei replied.
Allen-sensei was an A-rank adventurer, while I was a B-rank. Unfortunately, high-rank magical beasts were rare, so the frequency of such missions was low.
Even though slaying lower-rank beasts didn’t add to our points, I was sure that if the evaluation system changed, Allen-sensei would undoubtedly be an SS-rank adventurer by now.
After arranging accommodations at the village’s inn, we stopped by the guild.
Despite the guild’s small size, the request board was crowded with papers. Surrounded by forests, the village frequently dealt with magical beasts.
According to the villagers, the soldiers stationed here also hunted beasts in the vicinity, keeping the village safe.
“Roa, there are a few B-rank magical beasts posted. These are probably too challenging for the soldiers here,” Allen-sensei remarked.
“Understood,” I replied.
There were five B-rank requests, all of which Allen-sensei accepted. As he handled the paperwork at the counter, I noticed something different from the usual guild request procedure.
“Allen-sensei, the process seems different from the usual guild requests. Is there something special about it?”
“Ah, yes. This is slightly different. When accepting requests, we register as Code 01. After registration, we sign at the counter.”
“What happens after we sign?”
“Not much. It’s essentially a designation indicating that we’re royal-affiliated adventurers. If you look closely, many of these requests are past their deadlines. High-rank magical beast requests often go unfulfilled because most adventurers can’t handle them.
“To prevent further harm, we’re assigned to take the lead on these hunts. Additionally, the cost of high-rank beast requests can be steep, so the kingdom subsidizes half of the reward when necessary.”
For us, it felt less like a bounty and more like a royal paycheck.
“Wow, I didn’t know the kingdom had royal-affiliated adventurers,” I said, impressed.
“There aren’t any besides us. Before me, Jennice was the only one,” Allen-sensei explained calmly.
It seemed that this Code 01 was exclusive to members of the Zero Division. For us, the system worked well—we received proper rewards, earned points, and didn’t have to worry about unmet requests tarnishing our records.
If a request turned out to be unmanageable, an emergency notification would be sent to the royal palace, summoning court magicians or knights. In such cases, while the request would be marked as incomplete, it wouldn’t negatively affect our records. Until reinforcements arrived, our role was to weaken the magical beast as much as possible.
As Allen-sensei explained, we headed into the forest.
The B-rank magical beasts we’d accepted were reportedly concentrated around a lake a short distance from the village. The villagers needed safe access to the lake to collect rare herbs that grew there.
When we reached the lake, we immediately spotted one of our targets: a werewolf, a wolf-type magical beast.
Werewolves typically measured around two meters in length. While their intelligence was low, their physical abilities were exceptional, and they usually operated alone. Ferocious by nature, they were known to compete with Red Bears for territory.
Due to their agility and strength, werewolves were classified as C to B-rank magical beasts.
Alongside the werewolves, the requests included harpies—ten in total.
Harpies were bird-like humanoid beasts known for their sharp talons. They hunted by grabbing prey and dropping it from great heights.
While individually weak against magic, harpies were dangerous because they hunted in flocks. Open areas like the lake made ideal hunting grounds for them, requiring extra caution. This was one of the many things I’d learned during my training in the Zero Division.
“Now, Roa, show me the results of your four years of training,” Allen-sensei said with a grin.
A lone werewolf was prowling near the lake. Known for their keen hearing, they were easily provoked by noise. I quickly hurled a flash bomb at its face.
With a loud pop, the flash bomb went off, startling the werewolf. It crouched low, disoriented by the sound. Seizing the moment, I sprinted toward it, chanting a Light spell to further blind it and disrupt its senses.
The opening I’d been waiting for had arrived.
I swung my sword toward its neck, the momentum carrying through to strike at its legs. While I couldn’t cleave it in one blow, I managed to wound its legs deeply enough to hinder its movements. The werewolf swiped at me with its sharp claws, but its impaired vision made it difficult to land a hit.
I quickly maneuvered behind it and delivered the final strike, cutting it down.
“Sensei, it’s done,” I reported.
“You’ve grown well. I had no reason to worry,”
Allen-sensei said approvingly. “Now that it’s taken care of, we’ll use it to lure the harpies.”
In open areas like this forest clearing, magical beast carcasses quickly attracted harpies looking for an easy meal.
After cleansing ourselves of the blood using Cleanse Magic, we hid among the trees, waiting patiently for the harpies to arrive.
About an hour passed. Just as I thought they might not come, six harpies appeared, circling cautiously before descending to the ground near the werewolf’s body.
“Now,” Allen-sensei commanded.
At his signal, I cast Wind Magic, creating a whirlwind that trapped the harpies and snapped their wings. As they tumbled to the ground, we moved in and swiftly dispatched them.
“Sensei, it’s done,” I said as I sheathed my sword.
“That wasn’t too difficult,” he remarked.
After catching our breath, we packed the werewolf and harpies into our enchanted storage bags. We still needed to hunt two more werewolves, so we made our way toward the next location marked on the request sheet.
The path led us from the lake to a more open area near the foothills.
I couldn’t help but notice that magical beasts tended to favor similar habitats. Perhaps certain environmental factors attracted them, I mused as we moved cautiously through the brush.
We crouched in the tall grass, keeping low to remain undetected. However, this time, the werewolf had the upper hand.
From behind us, a low growl rumbled, followed by a sudden attack.
Allen-sensei reacted instantly, rolling sideways to dodge the ambush. I stumbled forward, narrowly avoiding the strike, and spun around to throw a dagger imbued with a Paralysis Spell.
The werewolf tried to bat the dagger away, but it grazed its paw, leaving a shallow wound. A thin line of blood trickled down its hand as it let out an enraged growl.
Allen-sensei seized the opportunity, drawing his sword and slashing at the beast.
The werewolf deflected the blade with its long claws and lunged, aiming to bite him. Calmly, Allen-sensei conjured a Fireball, launching it directly into the creature’s open mouth.
It was a move reminiscent of Duro-san’s battle techniques, blending magic and physical combat seamlessly. I found myself impressed by its effectiveness in such a situation.
“Roa, stop admiring and attack!” Allen-sensei called out sharply.
“Yes, Sensei!”
I quickly drew my sword, waiting for Allen-sensei to dodge. The moment he stepped aside, I slashed at the werewolf, managing to land a deep wound.
The beast staggered, clutching its injured side and crouching low to protect itself. Allen-sensei capitalized on the moment, delivering a decisive strike to its back and bringing it down.
