The Noble Lady Without Magic Aims to Become an Adventurer! - Chapter 79
“Excuse me.”
When I entered the study, as always, Otto and my father were busy with their work.
“You called for me, Father?”
“Marloa, this is about the letter from the royal palace earlier—”
“Father, is it alright if Fars stays with me?”
“Ah, if it’s Fars, I trust he won’t speak of this to others. Fars, keep this matter to yourself.”
“Understood.”
Fars gave a formal bow as my father instructed.
“Marloa, I need you to explain what’s going on. A summons has arrived for you to join the Royal Knights’ Zero Division, directly under His Majesty.”
The Royal Knights’ Zero Division? It’s a mysterious unit, often rumored to include operatives working in the shadows.
So, what His Majesty mentioned earlier was about the Zero Division. And now, the formal invitation has been sent directly to my father.
I had felt for a while that I couldn’t keep it hidden from my father forever, and this seemed like the right moment to reveal everything.
How would he take it?
Would he reject me again?
Would he hate me?
Would he scold me for hiding the truth?
Or would he insist I marry as a proper noblewoman instead?
Filled with anxiety, I glanced at Fars, who nodded with a serious expression. It seemed he, too, believed now was the time to come clean.
I steeled myself, took a deep breath, and looked at my father as I began to speak.
“…Father. There is a reason why I’ve been summoned to the Zero Division.”
“And what reason is that?”
I gently extended my right hand and conjured a floating sphere of water. My father and Otto widened their eyes in shock, staring at the magic I’d produced.
“M-Marloa, since when have you been able to use magic?”
“I think it was when I was five. When Fars and I went to see the magical beast that had appeared near the village, it suddenly attacked us. To protect myself, I instinctively used magic.”
My father seemed unable to hide his astonishment.
“Why… Why didn’t you report this? Hubert never mentioned it either.”
“Father, please don’t blame Hubert. I was the one who told him to stay silent. While living in the village, the priest said, ‘The church does not make mistakes in its assessments. This must be the will of God.’ Since I was officially judged to have no magical power, he told me to keep quiet about it.”
“…I see. But how did His Majesty learn that you have magic?”
“I believe he discovered it during the martial arts tournament. It’s said that those with high magical power, like royalty or certain magicians, can perceive the magic of others. I think Prince Sherman and His Majesty noticed it when they saw me.”
“So that’s why you were assigned as Prince Sherman’s escort at the ball.”
My father nodded, as though pieces of a puzzle had finally come together.
“Yes. Since I’m a woman presumed to have no magical power, the enemy would likely underestimate me, making me a suitable choice for the role.”
“…I see. Does anyone else know that you possess magical power?”
“In the village, Hubert, Violeta, the priest, Fars, and Reco know. Outside of them, Professor Revien, Arnold Gaus, Yele Ruhothark, the weapon shop owner Marge, the armor shop owner Dungeon, and the royal family are aware.”
Thinking about it, I realized there were more people who knew than I had initially thought.
“Did you tell them yourself?”
“I told Hubert and the others since they’re like family. As for the others, they seemed to notice on their own.”
“I see. Have you had your magical power measured?”
“No, but Senior Yele, who’s a magician, mentioned that my power seemed to be around the level of an average lower noble…”
I trailed off, realizing I had said too much, and avoided my father’s gaze. When I glanced at Fars, he gave me a look as if to say, Well, you went and said it.
“An average lower noble’s level… but? There’s more to this, isn’t there?”
“Yes. I can’t provide all the details, but after a magical beast subjugation, I brought back some fruit, which I ate with my seniors. Afterward, my body changed, and it seems I now possess magical power comparable to upper nobles. However, I haven’t been formally tested, so I can’t say for sure.”
“I see.”
Father seemed to be deep in thought. I imagined he must have a lot on his mind—realizing that his daughter, once thought to have no magical power, now possesses magic rivaling that of upper nobles.
“Father, the reason for my summons from the royal palace was related to this matter. Initially, His Majesty proposed that I become an aide to the prince. However, I declined, as I felt it would appear that our family was forcing my way into such a position, damaging our reputation due to my supposed lack of magical power.
However, I believe His Majesty understood this and instead recommended the Zero Division. I have since responded that I would accept the position.”
“The Zero Division is a covert unit, isn’t it? Wouldn’t that entail dangerous missions?”
“His Majesty has instructed me to serve as an assistant to Lord Revien Asher. While working as an adventurer, I’ll be tasked with identifying talented individuals across the kingdom.
Becoming an adventurer has always been my dream, and if it means working under Professor Revien, I’m willing to join the Zero Division.”
“I see. I understand. As the Marquis, I cannot oppose a direct order from His Majesty. I’ll sign the documents that were sent. However, please refrain from taking on overly dangerous missions. Believe it or not, I do worry about you.”
I nodded with a beaming smile.
I couldn’t help but dream about the future—when the job would start, what kind of tasks I’d have, and if Professor Revien would personally come to fetch me.
Lost in my excitement, I felt a tap on my shoulder. When I turned around, Fars was looking at me with a pained expression.
Snapping back to reality, I noticed both my father and Otto staring at me with exasperated looks.
“Well, in any case, don’t overdo it.”
“Yes, Father.”
With that, Fars and I returned to my room.
“Congratulations on joining the Zero Division, Marloa. So, this was the matter, huh? Isn’t the Zero Division known for being His Majesty’s shadow?”
“There’s so much mystery surrounding it. I haven’t been told the details either. What I do know is that I’ll be traveling with Professor Revien on an adventure, scouting for new talent.”
“That sounds amazing. I wish I could join you.”
Fars looked genuinely envious.
“But aren’t you aiming to become the captain of the knight’s order?”
“Exactly! Becoming the knight commander is my top priority. But I’d love to go hunting with you occasionally on my days off—it’d be the perfect way to unwind.”
After chatting casually for a while, we decided to take things slow until further instructions arrived.
A few days after the letter from the royal palace arrived, Father submitted the signed contract for my enlistment into the Zero Division. It was successfully accepted.
It seemed His Majesty had been eagerly awaiting my response. That night, as I was about to go to bed, a magical bird—clearly one of His Majesty’s special creations—tapped at my window and entered my room. As soon as it touched my hand, it transformed into a letter.
It was unlike any magical communication I’d ever seen! I marveled at it in my room, keeping my excitement to myself. As expected of royalty.
Opening the letter, I found a rough schedule for the upcoming days.
It read:
“Proceed with your academy graduation exam immediately.”
Apparently, I wouldn’t be starting work after graduation—I needed to take the exam as soon as possible.
The letter also said:
“Tomorrow, after the academy, report directly to the room adjacent to His Majesty’s study at the royal palace.”
Wait, there’s a room next to His Majesty’s study? I’d never heard of such a thing.
Pondering this mystery, I climbed into bed for the night.
