The Noble Lady Without Magic Aims to Become an Adventurer! - Chapter 100
“…Roa.”
Someone was calling me as I slept. Groggily rubbing my eyes, I sat up to find Allen-sensei, dressed as if he were about to head out.
“Sensei? What’s going on? It’s still the middle of the night,” I asked, my voice thick with sleep.
“Roa, it’s an attack. Get ready immediately,” he said, his tone grim.
!!
I quickly prepared myself. Since I wasn’t in sleepwear, it didn’t take long to strap on my sword and ready my weapons.
“Sensei, an attack? Is it magical beasts? Bandits?”
“It’s soldiers from the neighboring country, disguised as bandits. About twenty of them. Cast Recognition Inhibition immediately.”
Through his ear cuff communicator, Sensei was already relaying the situation to the Zero Division as I prepared.
[Emergency: Allen here. We have an attack at the border village of Zarlton, disguised as bandits. Enemy count approximately twenty.]
I cast Recognition Inhibition as instructed and made my way outside, my mind swirling with questions. The neighboring country wasn’t supposed to be at war with us—so why this attack?
The village was eerily quiet, but faint movements betrayed the presence of intruders scattered throughout.
[Understood. Allen, Roa, handle it immediately.]
The command came from the Captain through the communicator.
Allen-sensei whispered, “Take them down silently. Don’t let them notice you.” Then, like a shadow, he disappeared, his presence vanishing completely.
I followed suit, masking my presence and searching for the enemy.
Though dressed as bandits, their movements were unmistakably those of trained knights. Where were the border guards during all this?
I suppressed my questions and focused on the task. One by one, I incapacitated the intruders, rendering them unconscious rather than killing them. Without intelligence on their motives, we needed them alive.
Once tied up, I dragged them to the inn’s dining area, administering a potent magical sleep potion to ensure they stayed unconscious.
The attackers seemed unaware that members of the Zero Division were present in this remote village, which worked to our advantage. Before long, we had subdued nearly half of them.
The remaining attackers had gathered the villagers in the central square.
I regrouped with Allen-sensei, and we divided the remaining targets. He would handle the leader and five guards, while I took care of the other five.
The plan was clear: leave the leader and the unconscious enemies alive for interrogation; the rest could be neutralized.
Although I’d only fought magical beasts before, I understood the necessity of this. If I didn’t act, villagers and soldiers could die, and an outright conflict with the neighboring country might erupt, leading to even greater loss of life.
Steeling myself, I crept behind the soldiers. At Sensei’s signal, I unleashed a flurry of spells, swiftly striking down two targets.
The sudden attack caused confusion among the remaining soldiers, but the leader quickly barked orders. “The enemy is using recognition
inhibition and suppressing their presence. Stay alert!”
Hearing this, the others began to regain their composure. Realizing my cover was blown, I threw a flash bomb, blinding the group momentarily.
The explosion startled the villagers, causing a commotion that further distracted the attackers. Using the chaos to my advantage, I strengthened my body with Enhance Body and swiftly incapacitated the remaining two soldiers.
Though they weren’t dead, their injuries were severe enough to render them harmless.
My part of the mission complete, I turned to see that Allen-sensei had already subdued the leader.
“Is everyone okay?” I asked, addressing the villagers.
The village chief, pale and shaken, nodded. He explained that the attackers had stormed the village without warning, rounding up the villagers in the square. Those who resisted had been killed.
The full extent of the casualties was still unknown.
The building housing the border guards appeared untouched, but the night shift guards had all been killed.
[Mission complete. Requesting follow-up for processing and reinforcements.]
[Understood. Support will arrive shortly.]
While freeing the villagers and assessing the damage, a faint magical circle began to glow in the village square. Moments later, the Head Mage and the First Knight Commander appeared.
Incidentally, the First Knight Commander was Vino, who had been my practical examiner during my academy entrance exam.
According to Sensei, Vino had been present at that exam to evaluate my abilities based on Allen-sensei’s recommendation. I’d never expected him to intervene so directly back then, but thanks to him, I was able to enroll.
Despite the late hour, both men were composed and efficient, immediately taking over the situation.
We briefed them on the attack and handed over the captured enemies, maintaining our Recognition Inhibition to remain unseen.
As members of the Zero Division, we worked in the shadows and left the public handling to others.
After completing the handover, we returned to the inn to rest.
The next morning—or rather, afternoon—I finally woke up. Allen-sensei, already awake, was in the middle of a communication with the Zero Division.
I quietly made my way to the dining area and arranged for breakfast. Knowing Sensei hadn’t eaten either, I brought a light meal back to the room.
“Sensei, I brought food,” I said, setting the tray down.
“Thanks, Roa. Last night was hectic. It’s been a while since I felt that level of tension,” he admitted with a small smile.
“If it weren’t for you, Sensei, I wouldn’t have realized what was happening.”
“Don’t worry. If it came to it, you would’ve handled it just fine.”
Still, I couldn’t help but reflect on how complacent I’d been. In the wild, I always remained vigilant even while resting. But staying in the village had made me let my guard down.
After eating, I asked, “What’s the plan now, Sensei?”
“I had planned for us to leave tomorrow, but it’s better to stay until the knights finish processing everything. If magical beasts stir up trouble in the meantime, it could complicate things.”
“And the neighboring country? I thought relations were peaceful.”
“They are—on the surface. But just like here, there are factions that want to stir up trouble for political gain.”
It made sense. Just as this kingdom had its share of dissenters targeting the royal family, the neighboring country likely had its own internal strife.
After finishing our meal, we headed to the guild and spent the day hunting magical beasts in the area. By the evening, the village’s surroundings were secure, and we had even provided extra meat for their food stores.
Back in the village, we learned that the Head Mage had already taken the captured leader back to the capital for interrogation. The remaining knights and mages would arrive the next day to finalize the situation.
As usual, we stayed under the radar, maintaining the guise of regular adventurers. The captured enemies would face interrogation by the royal mages—a process I didn’t envy. I’d heard those interrogations were brutal.
