The Mermaid's Cat Fishing Plan - Chapter 8
Chapter 8: “So, This Is the One My Sister Loves…”
Qin Ran thought to herself that as long as she could see the face, she could overlook all that chaotic tossing and turning she had been put through earlier. If she saw the face in her dream, it would be easier to play the flatterer when they met in reality later…
Lost in her fantasies and with a heart full of anticipation, Qin Ran brushed aside the golden hair.
Tang Yi!?
Qin Ran saw a face she had just seen that very evening.
Qin Ran: “…”
Qin Ran felt an inexplicable sense of being toyed with. Why were there so many people who delighted in going to great lengths to give someone a sweet taste, only to follow it up with a sudden blow to the head, bluntly telling them: Just kidding?
Was it funny?
Qin Ran almost wanted to drop the “Tang Yi” in her arms and walk away.
“Sister, Sister, don’t leave me,” “Tang Yi” reached out, stroking Qin Ran’s face. “Sister…”
Tang Yi’s eyes were brimming with tears, her distress as delicate as pear blossoms in the rain—utterly pitiable.
Qin Ran’s expression was cold as frost as she let out a sigh. She caught “Tang Yi’s” hand and said calmly, “I understand. I’ll carry you back to the ocean.”
Even though it was a puppet, Qin Ran decided to conscientiously play along until the end of the act. After all, she would have to ask for a favor in the future; what if this was a test from the mermaid?
Having said that, Qin Ran exerted her strength to pull “Tang Yi” onto her back. She reached behind her, supporting the fish tail with her fists, and warned, “Please hold onto my arms tightly. If you fall and get hurt again, I won’t care.”
“Tang Yi” nodded, obediently resting against Qin Ran’s back, her hands gripping Qin Ran’s arms firmly. Her head leaned into the crook of Qin Ran’s neck, and a sharp, cold seashell earring brushed against Qin Ran’s collarbone.
It was icy cold.
And a bit itchy.
Qin Ran had only taken a few steps when the jellyfish resting on her other shoulder grew dissatisfied and began to move restlessly. It slowly unwound the tentacles that were looped around Qin Ran’s neck and began wrapping them around “Tang Yi’s” fingers, trying to pry her hands away from Qin Ran’s arms.
After several failed attempts to pull her away, the jellyfish grew angry. It wound its way down Qin Ran’s arm to her wrist, coiling itself between her fingers. It seemed desperate to cover every inch of Qin Ran’s skin.
Soon, Qin Ran’s hand… went numb.
Fortunately, Qin Ran was quick-witted. She immediately thought that this jellyfish might be the real mermaid, testing her endurance. So, even though she was panting with exhaustion from carrying the heavy mermaid, she didn’t forget to negotiate with the “Examiner” in a gentle voice.
“Sister Jellyfish, could you please let me go a little? If you wrap any tighter, this arm is going to be completely ruined…”
“If it’s ruined, I won’t be able to send you back.”
The jellyfish seemed to actually understand. The tentacles wrapped around Qin Ran’s arm loosened slightly. Qin Ran let out a breath of relief and walked until the seawater reached her waist, then gently lowered “Tang Yi” into the sea.
The silver-white fish tail looked even more beautiful under the light of the full moon. It was even more stunning than the version under the crescent moon that day.
“Tang Yi” looked back at Qin Ran once, without a hint of lingering attachment, then turned and leapt into the depths of the sea.
Qin Ran: “…”
Uh, not even a ‘goodbye’?
Qin Ran collapsed in exhaustion, the cold seawater splashing rhythmically beside her. She rested for a while, then suddenly murmured as if talking to herself: “Miss Mermaid, why test me so? First, you exhaust my physical strength with that ordeal, then you turn into a pretty little thing to terrify me and shake my resolve… Am I really that untrustworthy?”
She then plucked the jellyfish from her shoulder and held it before her. Qin Ran gently stroked the jellyfish’s bell, looking at it with curving eyes: “What do you think, little jellyfish?”
Her amber eyes were filled with infinite tenderness and lingering affection.
The jellyfish’s soft umbrella bell instantly drooped, and it lowered its head in guilt and panic.
Qin Ran rejoiced inwardly; it seemed she hadn’t guessed wrong. The look the mermaid gave when leaving wasn’t for her, Qin Ran, but for the master on Qin Ran’s shoulder.
Qin Ran immediately intensified her “gentle offensive.” “But I am truly looking forward to meeting you, my little mermaid of first sight.”
The jellyfish slowly raised its head. Its cold tentacles shrank back in a flurry; the moment they touched Qin Ran’s arm, they curled into a ball. It froze for a long moment before finally, shyly, extending a tiny tentacle to gently touch the space between Qin Ran’s eyebrows.
Qin Ran looked at it with a face full of trust. “You can do whatever you want; I believe in you.”
The tiny tentacle emitted many small, pink points of light at the center of Qin Ran’s brow. A sudden cold wind swept across their faces.
Qin Ran’s gaze remained tender. In that moment, the jellyfish’s thoughts stilled. Looking at Qin Ran’s deeply affectionate face, its tentacle carefully pierced into her brow.
However, the moment the tiny pink lights entered Qin Ran’s body, they silently transformed into blue points of light.
Qin Ran’s affectionate gaze slowly became vacant and lost. She subconsciously blinked, trying to regain some consciousness, but ultimately could not resist the mermaid’s magic. Her vision faded to black, and her arm thudded heavily into the cold seawater.
The pale arm sent out a few ripples in the water.
The jellyfish floated quietly in mid-air, waiting.
After a long time, the blue light points that had just dived into Qin Ran’s body drifted out bit by bit. They gathered in mid-air, gradually coalescing into a cold, gentle, and elegant face.
It bore no resemblance to Tang Yi.
A thin layer of frost grew densely around the jellyfish.
Tang Yi gritted her teeth and said, “So, this is the person my sister loves.”
She had almost been deceived by Qin Ran’s tenderness. It was that sudden gust of cold wind just now that made her remember two words from the information she had gathered about Qin Ran.
In all the descriptions of her mostly dull and uninteresting life experiences, there were two words that had been highlighted in red by her sister, Tang Shi:
Unfaithful.
Tang Yi thought that perhaps “sweet-talker” would be an even better fit for Qin Ran.
