- The Max-Level Sacred Mountain Begs Me to Save the Interstellar [Apocalypse]
- Chapter 2 - Brother-in-Law
“Who are you? Don’t you know yourself?” Shen Ye grumbled. He had not expected someone so good-looking to be a fool.
Xie Songnian narrowed his eyes. “Shen Ye, I am giving you one more chance.”
Assistance requested: Just traveled through time, no memories. How do I respond?
Before Shen Ye could cook up a lie, a sharp, piercing sound rang out.
“Beep! Beep! Beep!”
The device on the man’s left wrist, resembling a smartwatch, was beeping frantically. He tapped the screen a few times, and a chaotic voice crackled through.
“Captain! The Tyrant Monarch has launched a sudden attack on the base! More than half of the plants at the West Gate are dead! Requesting backup, requesting backup!”
Shen Ye could faintly hear the sounds of explosions, women wailing, and even a sickening, squelching chewing sound from the other end.
Looks like the ‘Male Bodhisattva’ is in trouble, Shen Ye thought silently. That means I should be let go any second now, right?
Lucky!
With secret anticipation, Shen Ye watched as the man efficiently holstered his gun and turned around. Then, their eyes suddenly met.
“…” Shen Ye had an ominous feeling.
Sure enough, a moment later, the man pulled out a rope, bound Shen Ye’s hands, and began leading him away. Shen Ye felt insulted; the posture felt remarkably like being led on a leash.
The man had no time to worry about Shen Ye’s feelings. He hurried back to the squad and exchanged a few words with the other humans. Shen Ye was promptly shoved onto a vehicle, seated between a group of burly men armed to the teeth.
A little scary, teehee.
As the scenery outside shifted, several vehicles pulled up before the Central Base. It was a town built like a giant beast, with walls at least thirty meters high. From where Shen Ye stood, they stretched out to either side until they vanished over the horizon. It was essentially a “Plus” version of a metallic Great Wall.
Shen Ye was led off the vehicle. He heard the man say, “Throw him in prison first.”
Prison? Will that affect my chances of getting a government job later? Shen Ye did not want to go in; he wanted to try one last ditch effort to save himself.
Shen Ye blinked his large eyes innocently. “I have amnesia, believe me! I am a good person.”
Xie Songnian: “…”
The man’s expression grew exceptionally complex. Just as he was about to speak, a sudden mutation occurred.
Shen Ye saw a winged, fire-breathing rat launch another attack on the humans. Everyone scrambled up the walls to fight the monster. For a moment, the sky was filled with laser fire and high-speed sonic booms.
This is the legendary Tyrant Monarch? A rat? Shen Ye privately thought the name was a bit of an oversell.
[! Buzhou! Eat, eat, eat, eat! You, catch, give to Buzhou!]
There it was again. Shen Ye looked up at the flying rat, which was moving at the speed of sound, and really wanted to ask, “Huh? Me?”
[Hungry, hungry, hungry! Eat, eat, eat!]
“No eating,” Shen Ye tried to communicate with the voice in his head. “Go yourself. I cannot beat that.”
[Zhou, Zhou, scared.] It sounded aggrieved.
Wait, what is it pretending for? This mountain just ate a cockroach monster earlier!
[Roach, weak. Rat, cannot beat.]
Oh. So it was a bully that only picked on the weak.
Naturally, Shen Ye was not actually going to catch the rat; he was scared too. He hid behind a barrier, watching the fierce battle between humans and rodents. At that moment, several armored vehicles drove out from inside the base.
After disembarking, the soldiers actually brought out pots of plants and arranged them in a giant circle, seemingly trying to hem the rat monster in. To Shen Ye’s surprise, these fragile-looking plants actually managed to restrict the monster’s movements!
Taking advantage of the monster’s distraction, someone shouted, “Now!” Every laser cannon and missile pointed at the airborne monster and fired simultaneously.
Once the flames dissipated, the rat monster was still alive. It dragged its mangled, broken body, trying to flee the encirclement. But as it neared a few dandelions, the monster’s flesh began to melt, and it let out a pained roar.
Xie Songnian drew a laser sword coated in plant juice and quickly closed the distance. Using the moment of the monster’s distraction, he sliced the rat’s head in two with a single strike.
Clang!
Half of the rat’s body fell from the sky, landing right near Shen Ye. Armed combatants nearby quickly tightened the perimeter until they were certain the monster was truly dead.
The humans erupted into a massive cheer, except for Shen Ye.
[Ahhh, eat, eat, eat!] His left hand was going crazy, trying to get closer to the monster’s corpse.
Shen Ye: “Don’t ruin him!”
If he actually ate the monster in front of all these people, he really would be labeled a monster. His fragile body could not handle a missile strike. No! Even if the sky fell today, he would not go near that corpse!
[Then, the seed, put it on it, eat.]
[Go.]
A seed appeared in Shen Ye’s left hand. The voice in his head urged him to throw the seed onto the monster’s corpse.
Using a seed to eat a monster? Seems like a good method.
Taking advantage of the fact that no one was looking, Shen Ye ran to the monster’s head and tossed the seed inside. At that instant, Shen Ye felt a long-lost sense of fullness. It was a happy, satiated feeling. In response, the rat’s corpse melted rapidly, vanishing in plain sight within seconds.
In its place, an orchid strangely sprouted!
The whole world went silent. Everyone at the base was stunned. They had seen cloned plants and plants that repelled monsters, but a plant that ate monsters was a first!
“Everyone! Evacuate immediately!”
The military quickly cleared the crowd, including Shen Ye.
This was easily the act Shen Ye regretted most in his life. He should have known that Mount Buzhou, which could not even speak clearly, would not understand a high-level concept like “eating should be done in private.”
Since Mount Buzhou’s earth-shattering meal, Xie Songnian had no time for Shen Ye. At this time, a soldier calling himself Xiao Liu took the initiative to strike up a conversation. He seemed quite familiar with Shen Ye.
Fortunately, Xiao Liu was a simple-minded blabbermouth. Shen Ye quickly fished out information about this world.
In the year 2500, an asteroid destroyed the Earth’s atmosphere. High-energy radiation forced humanity to migrate to Mars, Europa, and Jupiter’s moons, known as the “Three Stars,” to struggle for survival. These stars had minerals, water, sun, and air; however, they were all shrouded in a mysterious mist. Monsters grew within the mist and fed on humans. The only thing that could kill the monsters was various types of plants.
Plants could disperse the mist, and without the mist’s protection, the monsters would die instantly. Humans relied on plants to venture into the “Ghost Mist,” establish bases, and find minerals. This was how they barely survived.
Shen Ye was currently at the Central Base, the largest and most core human gathering place among the Three Stars. The famous Interstellar Agricultural Alliance was located here. The Alliance researched plants and cultivated extremely fragile seeds, reigniting the hope for humanity’s survival.
“What about the man who killed the rat monster? Tell me about him,” Shen Ye asked, curious.
Xiao Liu turned his head, his eyes filled with shock and the confusion of “Is there something wrong with your brain?” He spoke slowly:
“Isn’t that your brother-in-law?”
Shen Ye: “Huh?” Shen Ye: “Then where is my sister?” Xiao Liu: “Who are you asking?”
The two arrived at the base dormitories in a weird atmosphere. These were silver-white buildings coated in a strange green liquid.
Xiao Liu spoke cautiously, “You haven’t really lost your memory, have you?”
“Yeah.” Shen Ye took the opportunity to show the back of his head. “I bumped it. It still hurts.”
Xiao Liu muttered, “They said you went stupid, but I didn’t believe it. Anyway, 4-404 is your dorm. You can open the door with your fingerprint.”
Shen Ye thought: What kind of genius chooses this room number?
Xiao Liu kept staring at Shen Ye like he was a rare animal. In Xiao Liu’s eyes, Xie Songnian was the strongest commander in the galaxy, having once soloed a Lord-class monster. Shen Ye had been picked up from the outside by Xie Songnian. Although they had never seen Shen Ye’s sister, Captain Xie had never denied Shen Ye’s identity.
Privately, they joked that Shen Ye was the “Strongest Brother-in-Law in the Universe,” able to do whatever he wanted in the base. Xiao Liu had wanted to suck up to him, but he had not expected his flattery to land on deaf ears.
“Ahem.” Xiao Liu snapped back to reality. “I am in 405. Zhang Heng lives in 406. Zhang Heng is a civilian staff member in charge of weapon sales for the cleanup crew.”
“Also, here is this. The latest model Star Ring Commander Xie promised you. It costs 50,000 Star Credits!”
Shen Ye snatched the Star Ring, thinking to himself: Thank you, my dear sister who married into wealth.
Seeing this, Xiao Liu did not stay long. Staying with Shen Ye for too long can make one die of envy.
Shen Ye used his fingerprint to open the door to room 404 and mentally mapped out his relationships: Xie Songnian = Brother-in-law; Xiao Liu = Colleague; Zhang Heng = Salesman!
Knock, knock, knock.
Shen Ye immediately knocked on the door of 406. Zhang Heng, wearing pajamas and messy hair, yawned as he opened the door. “Oh, it is Shen Ye. Why are you looking for me at this hour?”
Shen Ye got straight to the point: “I want to ask about the housing prices in the Central Base.”
Zhang Heng was shocked. “What are you buying a house for? You are a single kid.”
Shen Ye was basically the “second-in-command” in this base; buying a villa should be a piece of cake, right? But Shen Ye made up an excuse: “Hahaha, isn’t my sister and brother-in-law getting married soon? I want to buy a house to give to my sister as pre-marital property. It is the devotion of a younger brother, you know?”
“Uh,” Zhang Heng scratched his head. Although things had been stable for a hundred years, people in the interstellar era mostly rented. But for the future Mrs. Xie, buying a house in a central location made sense.
Zhang Heng: “Fine, I will look into it for you. There is nothing on this planet I cannot buy. I have got connections!”
He opened his Star Ring to show Shen Ye a five-story small building, also painted with irregular green paint.
Shen Ye was a bit unimpressed. “Isn’t there anything prettier?”
Zhang Heng: “Pretty? Please, look at this. The exterior walls are entirely coated in plant juice. Do you know how expensive that is? Plus, this house is right next to the Agricultural Alliance. It is safe as hell!”
“Fine then, I will take it,” Shen Ye said fearlessly!
“Alright, I will give you a friendship price: 600 million. How are you paying?”
“Uh,” Shen Ye reflexively felt his pockets, only to remember his phone was not on him.
Zhang Heng: “Are you paying via Star Ring?”
Shen Ye looked at the smartwatch on his left wrist, realizing it was the all-in-one tool of this world. He turned it on, passed facial recognition, and successfully logged into his Star Ring.
Then he saw his wallet balance: 444.44
“…”
This does not make sense! How can someone with such powerful connections be a pauper? Was the original owner stupid? Not a single penny saved?
Shen Ye threw himself onto the bed, which was not soft at all. He tossed and turned, unable to understand his account balance. He grabbed a pillow and fake-cried, “Waaaa, I am reborn and I still cannot afford a house, waaaa.”
[Be good, flower, for you, do not cry.]
“What is this? Where did a rose come from?”
Shen Ye wiped away non-existent tears and looked at the vibrant rose that had fallen from his left hand; it even had roots.
[Shan-shan, plants, bear seeds, give to Ye Ye.]
Shen Ye was touched. Plants in this world must be very valuable! “Then can you give me a few more flowers?”
[1 flower!] Happy. “…” “What else?” [Fruit, 1.] Guiltily. “And?” [Two, two seeds.]
Shen Ye: “You are the one who is ‘two’ (silly).”
[Hmph, you are weak. Zhou-zhou hungry. Satiety gives stuff.]
Shen Ye: “You mean, as long as you eat enough, you can produce more plants?”
[Flowers, eat big ones; seeds, eat small ones.]
Shen Ye understood. Mount Buzhou used monsters as nutrients. After accumulating a certain amount of energy, it could produce plants or seeds from the mountain. The difference was that producing a full plant consumed a lot of energy, while seeds consumed very little.
At the same time, seeds could directly “eat” monsters, and after sprouting and growing, they could feed energy back to Mount Buzhou!
[Mm-hmm. Go. Catch.]
The good news: Shen Ye had found a path to ultimate wealth. The bad news: Shen Ye could not beat a monster to save his life.
For the first time, Shen Ye was annoyed by this beautiful but fragile body.
