- Chapter 15 - You Really Are Tight-Lipped
Shen Ye turned his gaze toward the door and happened to see the man of legends. Driven by curiosity, he scrutinized the newcomer. Although Dr. Gu Huairen was over fifty years old, his posture remained as upright as a pine tree. He appeared refined and scholarly; though wrinkles traced his brow, one could still see glimpses of his former upright and honorable demeanor.
Xie Songnian stepped forward to meet him, his tone calm yet carrying innate authority. “I am sorry to trouble you with this trip, Dr. Gu.”
Gu Huairen looked deeply apologetic, his voice warm. “Captain Xie, it is my lack of discipline.”
“My mother has always been worried about Yuanbin and hoped I could find him a stable position. In a moment of soft-heartedness, I agreed and arranged for him to gain experience at the school. I never imagined he would be so bold and reckless, causing such trouble and potentially interfering with your plans. I am deeply ashamed and must handle this personally to give everyone an explanation.”
“Dr. Gu, you are being too modest.” Xie Songnian’s expression remained unchanged, but his tone took a subtle turn. “This batch of seeds… has a special origin. They were luckily retrieved from the edge of the ‘Lord-level Anomaly’ territory. The original plan was to formally report them to the Union for unified disposal once absolute safety was confirmed. Who would have thought that my useless brother-in-law would secretly take them out to sell? That is what led to all these subsequent events.”
Shen Ye, who had been enjoying the show, was suddenly stunned to be called out. He felt like a “blind box”—every day, a different version of himself was revealed through Xie Songnian’s mouth. Just as he was thinking this, he noticed Xie Songnian casting an appreciative glance his way.
Wait, what now? Shen Ye wondered.
Gu Huairen, standing to the side, took in the interaction between the two. He looked at Shen Ye, then at his own cousin, Zheng Yuanbin. Observing the identical expressions of confusion on both their faces, he let out a long sigh. It seemed this was not a trap set by Xie Songnian for the Agricultural Union.
After all, observing Shen Ye’s words and behavior, he truly seemed like a hedonistic youth capable of such reckless, petty thievery—a perfect match in incompetence for his own useless cousin.
Xie Songnian sighed at the right moment. “Every family has its own difficult scriptures to read.”
Gu Huairen felt the sentiment deeply. “Alas, is that not the truth? In the end, this matter arose from my poor judgment and lack of strict oversight. I will definitely take Zheng Yuanbin back for strict discipline and provide a satisfactory answer to you and the Zhou brothers.”
“Cousin…” Principal Zheng started to speak.
“Shut up!” Gu Huairen barked, showing no mercy. He then turned back to negotiate with Xie Songnian, his tone becoming earnest. “Additionally, I see that Mr. Zhou Xiaofu’s injuries are quite severe. Ordinary medical methods might not be enough for a quick recovery. Why don’t I take him back with me as well? I will use the Union’s best medical resources for his treatment as a token of my compensation.”
As he spoke, Gu Huairen’s guards moved to take Zhou Xiaofu away. However, Xiao Liu, who had been standing quietly, was faster. He flashed forward and stood firmly between the guards and the stretcher like a silent wall.
Xie Songnian’s voice was steady but carried an unquestionable force. “We appreciate Dr. Gu’s kind intentions. As for Zhou Xiaofu… ultimately, this is the mess Shen Ye created. If he can walk away from everything unscathed, would that not just encourage his lawlessness?”
Shen Ye finally understood the role he had to play today: the stupidly stubborn, disrespectful “rich second generation” brat. He unceremoniously flopped onto the stretcher, shoving the actual casualty, Zhou Xiaofu, to the side. He acted like a total rogue. “I’ll save the person I hurt myself! Even if the King of Heaven comes, he’s not taking him!”
Gu Huairen looked at Xie Songnian in disbelief. “This… this is…”
Xie Songnian interrupted with a “weary” tone. “He is simply that headstrong. Rather than dwelling on this, Dr. Gu, why don’t we discuss the distribution of the mushroom and bitter melon seeds?”
“Fine, then.”
The moment Dr. Gu compromised, Xie Songnian’s gaze shifted almost imperceptibly. Within a heartbeat, Xiao Liu and the others took the hint. They quickly and orderly carried Shen Ye and Zhou Xiaofu out of the room.
Lying uncomfortably on the stretcher, Shen Ye whispered, “How much longer do I have to act?”
“You can finish your scene once we’re inside,” Xiao Liu said as they carried them into Room 908 at the end of the hall. The door slammed shut.
Shen Ye rolled off the stretcher. “Even though I cooperated, I honestly didn’t understand today’s play.”
Xiao Liu scratched his head. “This matter is quite complex.”
“Can’t you just make a long story short?” Shen Ye asked.
“You really couldn’t see through that?” a voice asked.
Shen Ye stared at Xiao Liu’s tightly closed mouth, a chill running up his spine. The voice had been right in his ear!
“Boss, it’s me, Zhou Xiaofu.”
Zhou Xiaofu, showing remarkable resilience, sat up from the stretcher without any trouble!
“Why so surprised? Is this not all thanks to your—oh, I mean your brother-in-law’s bitter melons?”
[Gua Gua! They’re Zhouzhou’s!]
Shen Ye thought to himself: Be quiet! If you keep being noisy, I’ll send you to kindergarten!
[Hmph, no… won’t go…]
It turned out that the roommate, Zhang Zhuangzhuang, had always been jealous of Zhou Xiaofu’s favorable circumstances. When he saw the Zhou brothers acting suspiciously, he assumed Zhou Zheng had stolen plants from the Agricultural Union and called the tip line. When Principal Zheng arrived and saw the vines spreading through the room, greed took over.
“You have no idea. That dog Zheng used a whip thicker than my arm on me!” Zhou Xiaofu said proudly. “But I didn’t say a single word.”
Shen Ye marveled, “You really are tight-lipped.”
Lacerations crisscrossed Zhou Xiaofu’s body, the raw wounds appearing red and terrifying.
“Actually, I have your brother-in-law’s bitter melons to thank. I ate half of one, and I can’t feel any pain at all.”
“Is it really that magical?”
“Really! If you don’t believe me, press here!” Zhou Xiaofu grabbed Shen Ye’s hand and pushed it toward a wound. He showed no reaction as Shen Ye’s fingers touched the bloody injury.
Shen Ye was amazed. “How incredible!”
“Right? Hehe,” Zhou Xiaofu grinned.
“But I still feel something is wrong,” Shen Ye noted. “This doesn’t fit the law of conservation of energy. Logically, pain doesn’t just disappear; it should only be transferred.”
The grin had not yet faded from Zhou Xiaofu’s lips when his face suddenly turned deathly pale. “Shit! My brother!!!”
Zhou Xiaofu frantically dialed Zhou Zheng’s number. Then, a cheerful ringtone sounded from nearby.
Room 908 had the exact same layout as Xie Songnian’s office—it was a suite. They walked toward the bedroom and saw Zhou Zheng lying on the white sheets of the inner room. His eyes were glazed over like an old television with a bad signal. It wasn’t the look of someone who had lost the will to live, but rather someone who had reached a philosophical state of “giving up,” as if saying, “Whatever happens, happens.”
Zhou Xiaofu threw himself at Zhou Zheng with a cry. “Waaaah! Brother! Are you okay, Brother?”
Zhou Zheng’s lips moved slightly. After leaning in to listen, Shen Ye’s expression became extremely strange.
“Xiaofu, your brother said.”
Zhou Xiaofu sobbed, his wet eyes looking at Shen Ye.
“Your brother is begging you to stop moving,” Shen Ye said. “He’s in pain.”
The room fell into a dead silence. Zhou Xiaofu’s sobs were caught in his throat, a tear still hanging on his face as he stared blankly.
Eventually, Xie Songnian, having received the news, hurriedly ended his negotiations with Gu Huairen and returned to Room 908 to stop the absurdity. The accompanying military doctor quickly treated Zhou Xiaofu’s wounds which looked horrific but caused him no pain. Meanwhile, Zhou Xiaofu finished three compressed biscuits while still sobbing.
Seeing that both brothers were out of danger, Shen Ye’s heart finally settled.
“Brother-in-law, you are a genius! A total polymath!” Shen Ye praised.
“That depends on who I am compared to,” Xie Songnian replied.
“Me! And Zhou Xiaofu!”
Xie Songnian just scoffed.
“I… I did make some unwise minor mistakes,” Shen Ye admitted. “But that was only based on my misjudgment of the environment.”
“If selling pain-transferring bitter melons and making people drink mushroom soup that turns them into Anomalies can be called ‘minor mistakes,’ then the destruction of Earth would only be a small ‘accident,'” Xie Songnian countered.
Shen Ye panicked: Oh no, I forgot about the little mushrooms!
However, he truly didn’t know that these plants could give people supernatural abilities.
[Heehee, Googoos!]
Shen Ye thought: Stop laughing! You’re ruining my attempt to make up a lie! If you keep laughing, I’ll turn you in.
[Hmph, Zhouzhou isn’t afraid… blehh!] The voice acted tough, but the volume dropped. It seemed a bit intimidated.
Shen Ye quickly gave Xie Songnian an even more flattering smile, trying to act cute to get away with it. “Well, I have you, Brother-in-law! You can handle any big problem. In my heart, you are all-powerful, magnificent, world-shaking…”
“Let this be the last time,” Xie Songnian interrupted.
Shen Ye felt as if he had been granted a general amnesty. He nodded vigorously. “I know, Brother-in-law! I promise it won’t happen again!”
Xie Songnian’s tone became calm and serious. “Shen Ye, I can tolerate all your little schemes and mischief within the base. There is only one thing: if you ‘pick up’ any more seeds in the future, you must give them to me sell them to me immediately. This world is more dangerous than you imagine.”
“Okay,” Shen Ye agreed. “But Brother-in-law, do you have any money left?”
Xie Songnian felt the veins in his temples begin to throb again. “I think you really are asking for a lesson today!”
“What are you doing? Ahhh! Domestic violence! Help! You jerk! Don’t hit my butt!”
Thud, thud, thud.
“Ouch!”
Shen Ye rubbed his red, swollen backside as he limped out of the building. This beating had triggered his rebellious streak. He decided to fight back, domestic violence is illegal!
As for his method of retaliation, he decided he would spend every last one of Xie Songnian’s Star-Coins immediately and turn him into a complete pauper!
