- Chapter 18 - The Future Governor's Wife
Kaes and Long Shi stepped out of the room. Several people leaned out of their windows, astonished to see both men still alive.
“The Governor and Commander have come out alive!”
“Oh my god, thank God!”
“That was terrifying.”
Civilians and patrolmen gathered outside the house. Kaes raised the soul magic stone: “It’s fine now. It was a nun’s ghost. She’s gone.”
The crowd murmured in relief, all deeply shaken.
“Thank you, Governor. We can finally sleep soundly tonight,” a woman said, crossing herself.
Everyone felt grateful towards the Governor and breathed a sigh of relief, preparing to return to their rooms for sleep.
Kaes added, “We don’t know if there are other spirits. We should still wait for Bishop Vansen.”
The crowd’s newly settled nerves tightened again. Whispers spread, perhaps there were others besides the nun?
Sleepiness vanished instantly. Those inside crowded the windows, finding comfort only when they could see Kaes.
Long Shi: “Will Bishop Vansen come?”
Kaes suspected the wizard prisoned at Santa Guan had likely escaped. He affirmed, “Bishop Vansen will definitely come. We’ll just have to wait here.”
The patrolman brought chairs for the two of them.
The civilians hadn’t expected the Governor himself to be guarding the spot. It was like a reassuring pill; they instantly felt much calmer, chatting with those crowded at the windows and below.
They waited like this for nearly half an hour. Fortunately, nothing happened. A flying figure appeared in the sky. Everyone looked up and scrutinized it. Indeed, Vansen had arrived.
Vansen wore the bishop’s white robes with a red cape, topped by a white hat. Seeing so many gathered on this street only deepened his unease.
Vansen descended from the air before Kaes: “The prisoner at Santa Guan has escaped. We’re searching everywhere for him… Why is the Governor personally guarding this spot? Has that wizard appeared here?”
“No wizard in sight, but I did see the nun he summoned.” Kaes stood up and handed the soul magic stone to Vansen. “This is the nun.”
Vansen reached under his red cloak, examining the inscription carefully. “This text… it’s definitely that mad wizard.”
Kaes voiced his concern: “I fear there might be other spirits.”
What if the moment he leaves, the spirits appear?
“I have a way to keep the spirits at bay.” Vansen produced a small cross, glancing around at the onlookers—both the crowd nearby and those inside the house—all eyes fixed intently on them.
Vansen held the cross, murmuring incantations. A white holy light radiated from him, a faint, luminous glow enveloping the neighborhood.
Vansen: “Alright, everyone can rest easy tonight. And Governor, you should return to your quarters. The rest of the neighborhood will now be under the clergy’s care. My deepest apologies if that wizard came straight to you after he escaped prison.”
“Recapturing him is a top priority. Just let me know what you need we’ll help in any way we can.” Kaes’s expression was equally grave; an SSS-rank sorcerer was no easy target.
Kaes ordered the patrol captain to intensify surveillance in the coming days.
The rest of the night passed without incident.
…
The next day’s banquet invited quite a few guests. The lively feast gave the future Governor’s spouse ample face.
Abe bought numerous outfits, trying them on repeatedly in his room. He tugged at his maid, asking what looked best. The maid simply thought Abe was so exquisitely lovely that anything would suit him.
Abe finally chose a seductive deep-blue ruffled-collar blouse. The collar was slightly open, revealing skin as milky as cream. He wore no pheromone blocker, letting the sweet, milky scent of his pheromones drift through the air.
The banquet hall was filled with many distinguished guests, all eagerly awaiting the future Governor’s spouse.
Kaes mingled with several lords, though he wasn’t close to them. They chatted casually, all deeply curious about his fiancée.
The maid brought them wine in stemmed glasses.
Lord 1: “Governor, your fiancée has been here for four days. Why did you hold the banquet only now? Are you trying to hide him from us?”
Jarl 2 swirled his wine: “Exactly. We’d love to see what the future spouse of the Governor looks like but we wouldn’t want to steal the spotlight from your fiancée.”
Jockey 3: “Which noble family does the young master hail from?”
Kaes, who never cared for his fiancée, could only offer perfunctory responses.
Two long tables filled the banquet hall—a gathering large enough to be considered grand.
Abe emerged wearing a flamboyant blue ruffled gown, accompanied by a maid. A rich, sweet milk scent wafted from him, instantly drowning out the chatter.
Though Abe’s gown was a deep blue, its brilliance was almost excessive. The satin shimmered in the candlelight, and his soft hair carried a gentle wave.
Guest: “Is this the Governor’s fiancée? He’s quite beautiful.”
Guest 2: “I even caught a whiff of sweet milk.”
The color of Abe’s attire was more dazzling than his complexion.
Abe offered an apologetic smile. “My apologies for being late.”
Upon Abe’s arrival the banquet shortly commenced.
Abe strode swiftly towards Kaes. Kaes’s gaze was utterly serene, devoid of the astonishment visible in the guests’ eyes.
Kaes said indifferently, “Let’s eat.”
He’d applied three layers of blocking patches and taken the anti-Omega-induced-heat medication Vansen had given him beforehand, yet he could still smell the milky pheromones. They lingered around his nose like an unyielding soul.
“Alright.” Abe tried to link arms with Kaes, but Kaes deftly avoided him.
Two more people entered then: Erlan in his red robes and his mage team leader, Shu.
Erlan arrived last, striding in with unabashed confidence. “My apologies for keeping you waiting.”
Erlan carried a subtle air of arrogance as he walked tall among these nobles, Shu appearing like his taciturn bodyguard.
The nobles found him irritating but dared not speak: “The Inspector is truly busy with countless affairs.”
Kaes gestured for Erlan to sit opposite him, the two highest-ranking officials present: “I thought you wouldn’t come.”
This time, Abe finally got to sit beside Kaes, gazing up close at the man she admired.
“How could I miss welcoming the future Governor’s spouse?” Erlan offered a polite smile.
Shu sat beside Erlan, staring at Abe for a long moment. He sniffed the air, filled with the unrestrained scent of milk. He felt nothing for Abe—he only wanted an Omega who could bear their children.
Kaes instructed the maids to serve the meal. Though the banquet was lavish, the scent of milk still overpowered the aroma of the dishes.
Most of the Alphas present were drawn to Abe. If he released more pheromones, who knew what uncontrollable actions they might take?
Those Alphas kept glancing their way. Kaes paused his cutlery and murmured to Abe, “Can’t you tone it down a bit?”
“Sorry.” Abe’s face flushed. He’d been so absorbed in eating that he hadn’t noticed until now how many Alphas were eyeing him hungrily.
Erlan had taken numerous precautions before leaving the house. He despised Omegas, loathing every trace of their scent.
Erlan teased with amusement, “Seems they all think the future Governor’s spouse smells better than dinner.”
Kaes shot Abe a silent glance.
“My bad for not thinking this through.” Abe assumed Kaes was jealous. He’d intended to distract Kaes, and of course he’d listen to Kaes so he toned down his pheromones.
Suddenly, an Alpha man lunged forward. Dressed in a slightly worn tailcoat, he looked like a less affluent noble.
“What a delicious milky Omega scent!” The man leapt toward Abe, clearly unprepared with any protective measures. He’d been driven completely out of control by the Omega’s pheromones.
Abe’s face paled. He felt someone pounce on him from behind, wrapping him tightly in an embrace. Abe’s body was forced forward onto the dining table, his face buried in the meat and vegetables on the plate. He screamed in panic: “Ah!”
“Let me smell! I want to bite!” The man clutched Abe tightly, lowering his head to bite Abe’s neck, desperate to sink his teeth into the Omega’s delicious glands.
“Whoa!” The room erupted in gasps, onlookers gawking at Abe.
Kaes shouted, “Guards!”
Two guards standing in the corner seized the man and dragged him out to cool off.
Abe’s face bumped into the food on the plate. When he lifted his head again, his face was smeared with grease.
Kaes took a handkerchief from the maid and pressed it against Abe’s face: “Wipe it off. Or maybe you should go back to your room to eat…”
Abe looked rather bedraggled. He turned his head, met Kaes’s still utterly unruffled gaze, and after a moment of silence, began to cry.
Kaes watched him cry.
Abe roughly wiped the saliva from the back of his neck with the handkerchief. He didn’t know if it had been bitten through, but he could smell that Alpha’s stench on his body: “Waaah.”
