- Chapter 2 - Day 1 (Morning): The Beginning of a Slow Life
A voice could be heard in the distance.
Wake-up time!
“Fuuuka-chaaan, goooood moooorning!!!”
—announced by a ridiculously loud voice.
“Uu… nn.”
“Wow, you’re so cute today too! Being able to greet the morning with Fuuka-chan, how happy am I?!”
The ridiculously loud voice was saying something that might slightly mislead listeners, with a dreamy tone.
Ah, that’s right. This hard bed.
This isn’t the usual mansion.
“……Miyako?”
Chestnut-brown hair smiling cheerfully before her.
Rubbing her sleepy eyes, Fuuka looked around.
Ah.
That’s right, she remembered.
“I really did run away from the mansion, didn’t I?”
“That’s right. You’ve had a long journey, well done, Fuuka-chan.”
“And to a place like the Attica region, of all places…”
On the cozy, warm bed.
Fuuka let out a deep sigh.
After about a day and night’s journey by carriage.
What they finally arrived at late last night was a rustic house in the Attica region north of the royal capital.
Apparently, it belonged to Miyako’s family.
A dining room with a fireplace.
A modest kitchen.
A food storage room.
And only one bedroom.
Fuuka, who had lived in mansions her entire life, nearly fainted.
With only one bedroom, where on earth would Miyako sleep?
Even though the nights were still cold, she’d feel bad making her camp outside.
‘Eh, Fuuka-chan, are you naturally trying to kick me out!? I’m honestly shocked, you know.’
Though there was only one bedroom, two beds were placed against the left and right walls as if clinging to them.
Stripping off her dress from her exhausted body, she collapsed.
The neatly made bed was much harder than the mansion’s feather duvet, but it didn’t smell of mold at all.
She didn’t even remember when she fell asleep.
Her body was tired, and her mind was tense.
The moment that tension snapped, Fuuka fell soundly asleep.
“We really came to a faraway place like the Attica region, didn’t we?”
“Yep. It’s a really great place!”
“What exactly are we going to do here?”
“Fweh?”
Through the carriage window.
The scenery visible in the darkness was nothing but fields, mountains, forests, and a river as far as the eye could see.
What was Miyako’s intention in bringing her to such a place?
She couldn’t imagine anything useful coming from it.
“We’re not going to do anything.”
“…What did you say?”
“So. I came here to do ‘nothing at all’ with Fuuka-chan.”
Do… nothing?
“What do you mean?”
Now it was Fuuka’s turn to tilt her head.
“So, just what it sounds like. Though I’m just borrowing the phrase from the ‘I Love Yellow Honey’ Bear!”
“?”
“Sorry, that’s from my world. More importantly, Fuuka-chan, let’s have lunch!”
At the word “lunch,” Fuuka remembered she was hungry.
Noticing the warm smell drifting in, she twitched her nose and her stomach growled with a “gyuu~,” making Fuuka blush.
“Huh, lunch? You don’t mean breakfast?”
“Huh? It’s already noon.”
“…What!?”
With a start, she hurriedly sat up and looked out the window.
Beyond the garden stretched nothing but fields.
The sun was directly overhead in the sky.
It was the warm, sunny scenery of midday.
“Wh-wh-wh-wh-what!?”
Fuuka was greatly shaken.
“M-me, sleeping in like this!? What should I do!? What about my morning reading!? My beauty exercises!? I was supposed to greet Father at 8 a.m. and study business from 9!”
“Fufu, fufufu…”
“This is no laughing matter!?”
What should I do?
She had a tightly packed schedule from waking at 5 a.m. to going to bed at midnight.
That was her daily routine.
If she didn’t put in the daily effort, someone like her would…
“Fuuka-chan, your complexion looks really good.”
“Huh?”
“Here, a mirror.”
Peering into the handed mirror, Fuuka let out an “Ah!”
The dark circles under her eyes, usually hidden with makeup, were nowhere to be seen.
Smooth skin. Rosy cheeks. She felt even the shoulder stiffness she usually suffered from had lessened.
Had her chronic lack of sleep improved a little, making her feel better?
“See? I think the hardworking Fuuka-chan is wonderful, but I like this morning’s Fuuka-chan too.”
“…I suppose rest is also part of the effort.”
Indeed, how long had it been since she’d slept this much?
It felt like such a distant memory, she couldn’t even recall.
“Here, we wake up, cook, go for walks, and take it easy doing various things. Sometimes it’s fine to just gaze blankly at the sky, or maybe play in the river. We can even have a picnic!”
“Picnic…”
What Miyako described seemed different from the social expedition version—the status-conscious rivalry between noble families full of schemes and posturing.
That sounded a little fun, perhaps.
“That’s what ‘doing nothing’ is!”
Faced with Miyako’s beaming smile, Fuuka felt all her resistance melt away.
“Let’s have breakfast! I’m really proud of it.”
“Eh, you made it? Not a servant!?”
“Ah. There are no servants here. The coachman went back to the royal capital too. It’s just the two of us, living together and doing various things.”
“…”
“Ah, could it be… Fuuka-chan, can you not do housework or something?”
“Th-there’s nothing you can do that I can’t!”
As Fuuka retorted heatedly, Miyako giggled.
“…Fuuka-chan, let’s live happily together, okay?”
“I-I have no reason to feel happy in such a lazy, shabby life.”
“Ehehe. The deadline is two weeks. We have 14 whole days. I’ll do my best.”
“Hmph, a promise is a promise. On the Hamilton family’s honor, I will keep my word.”
If Fuuka says “I’m happy” within two weeks, Miyako wins.
Otherwise, Fuuka wins.
Such was the strange slow life, on the first morning.
