The Heartthrob Protagonist's Early-Deceased 'White Moonlight' Has Come Back to Life - Chapter 5
Chapter 5: Jealousy
This flying boat was truly a novelty. Being situated upon it, Jiang Xuning felt a sense of floating weightlessness, and his mood managed to improve by a few degrees. However, this good mood did not last long before it dissipated completely once more.
He wondered if it was his imagination, but the man named Huo Ling seemed to harbor a trace of intangible hostility toward him. Every time their eyes met, Jiang Xuning felt a chill permeate his body, as if the man found him extremely disagreeable. This puzzled Jiang Xuning; they had clearly just met for the first time not long ago, so where could the source of such loathing have come from?
Furthermore, as someone who had read the original book, he actually had a very strong impression of Huo Ling. For no other reason than that he was the only person in the text who respected Yu Heng and cared about his feelings. He accompanied Yu Heng for years, standing in stark contrast to those “Gongs” (top/pursuer) who loved to engage in forced love. It was no wonder that in the end, among the several men, Yu Heng treated him as someone particularly special; it could be considered a mutual emotional journey. Moreover, perhaps if not for that damned original plot, the two would have been an immortal couple, and their story would have been passed down as a beautiful legend.
Setting those thoughts aside for now, what confused Jiang Xuning even more was that the book clearly stated True Lord Huo was gentle, polite, and kind to others. Yet seeing him now with his own eyes, why did Jiang Xuning feel there was a massive discrepancy between the man and the description in the book?
Strange, truly strange. Thinking of this, Jiang Xuning couldn’t help but steal two more glances. But this time was unlucky; before he could even make a move, as soon as he raised his eyes, he bumped right into Yu Heng’s gaze.
“Brother Xuning, what are you looking at?”
The youth blinked, looking straight at him as he asked with some confusion. His deep black eyes shimmered with light, possessing an indescribable liveliness but also an abnormal focus. His tone still carried a youth’s innocence.
Jiang Xuning’s heart skipped a beat at this sudden eye contact. He felt inexplicably guilty and subconsciously shifted his gaze away, not answering. Inside, he couldn’t help but feel annoyed at himself; he had forgotten that besides him in this cabin, there was also Yu Heng.
He couldn’t help but shrink back, but in the next moment, the youth had already followed him. A large shadow fell over him, nearly enveloping his entire figure. He wondered if it was a delusion, but he felt a strange sense of pressure.
The two were inches apart, forcing Jiang Xuning to look up. His field of vision was entirely filled by Yu Heng’s figure, and it was at this moment that he truly saw the person before him clearly.
Yu Heng was not wearing purple today; instead, he wore plain white clothes. Though not as gorgeous as their first meeting, it didn’t look bland; rather, it accentuated his exquisite features, adding a touch of purity and an ethereal, immortal aura. Compared to before, he looked more like a cultivator of an immortal sect who had transcended the mortal world.
Jiang Xuning had never seen this side of Yu Heng and was dazed for a moment. By the time he returned to his senses, the person before him spoke again.
“Hmph, so Brother Xuning likes Senior Brother Huo that much? You’re staring so hard you can’t look away. Could it be that my appearance is inferior to his? Brother would rather look at him than spare a single glance for me…”
The youth’s voice was soft and fine, becoming increasingly aggrieved toward the end. Tears threatened to fall but stayed held back, creating an indescribable “I pity you” look that made one’s heart ache upon seeing it.
Jiang Xuning had always been most susceptible to this tactic. Since childhood, he knew Yu Heng’s possessiveness was extremely strong; anything that belonged to him would not be easily touched by others. For this reason, Yu Heng had been angry with him many times; as long as Jiang Xuning got too close to anyone else, Yu Heng’s face would show displeasure.
In the past, Jiang Xuning would have immediately stepped forward to comfort him. But at this moment, he hesitated. For no other reason than he suddenly remembered the relationship between the two of them, which made it impossible to distinguish whether Yu Heng was angry because Jiang Xuning looked at Huo Ling too much, or if he was angry because he sensed Huo Ling was being coveted by Jiang Xuning…
Thinking of this, he felt a sudden blockage in his chest; his blood pressure seemed to rise, his head grew dizzy, and his body began to sway. Fortunately, Yu Heng caught him in time, sparing him from physical pain.
“Brother Xuning, what’s wrong?”
Seeing the pale face of the person in his arms, Yu Heng couldn’t help but frown. For a moment, he ignored the previous variables, his eyes full of worry.
“Should you rest for a while? You look very unwell.”
He spoke with eyes full of self-reproach, perhaps feeling annoyed by his own previous recklessness. “It was my oversight.”
The whole person wilted quite a bit, looking like a cub that had done something wrong.
Jiang Xuning was almost amused by this scene, but on second thought, he had been traveling on the flying boat for half a day. As someone just recovering from a serious illness, he truly couldn’t handle it. Coupled with the agitation just now, he felt quite faint. Therefore, he did not refuse; he raised his hand to smooth the “cub’s” fur and said softly, “Okay.”
Only then did the youth’s face break into a smile. He pulled out soft mattresses and pillows from somewhere and then impatiently urged the man to lie down. “Brother Xuning, rest first. When we reach the destination, I will call you.”
Jiang Xuning nodded. He wanted to say something more, but perhaps the soft pillow was too comfortable; before he could speak, he unknowingly drifted off to sleep.
……
It wasn’t until the breathing became steady that Yu Heng let out a sigh of relief. He raised his hand to caress the cheek of the person before him, his eyes filled with attachment, as his thoughts drifted far away.
This trip down the mountain was originally intended to bring someone back to the sect for medical treatment. However, upon entering Yuecheng, he learned the disastrous news of Brother Xuning falling into the water from others. He thought he had arrived too late; usually calm, he was momentarily scared out of his wits, as if falling into an ice cellar. Fortunately, Heaven showed mercy, and when he saw an intact Jiang Xuning again, he felt reborn.
“I will definitely save you, Brother Xuning.” Looking at the sleeping face, Yu Heng couldn’t help but swear secretly. No matter what method was required, he would not let the person before him leave him again.
As he thought this, he couldn’t help but reveal a faint smile of indescribable tenderness.
Unfortunately, this smile did not last long. In the next moment, he felt a chill down his spine, and his movements stiffened. He subconsciously turned his head, only to find that under the backlight, a gaze had been watching them all along, eyes calm and rippleless, yet permeating with an undeniable killing intent.
