Chapter 3: Huo Ling
“Brother Xuning.”
The youth in purple suddenly lunged into Jiang Xuning’s embrace, as lively and free as a small bird. His gorgeous face became even more moving due to that joy, involuntarily drawing the eye.
Only Jiang Xuning, from the moment he saw the person before him, couldn’t help but be dazed. He could no longer remember how long it had been since he last saw Yu Heng. Since the latter was chosen by the Tianyan Sect, they were destined to walk two completely different paths. Until his death, they had never met again. Thus, seeing the youth’s face now, he felt it was both familiar and strange; for a moment, he didn’t know how to react, only calling out blankly.
“A-Heng?”
His voice carried a hint of confusion.
“Master Yu, it really is you.”
Once he clearly saw the newcomer, A-Liang was also filled with excitement. He knew he hadn’t seen anything wrong; even if it had been a long time, such an appearance was likely unique to Master Yu alone.
“The Young Master often mentioned you before. I didn’t expect you to actually return; the Young Master should be happy now.”
“Really?”
A flash of surprise crossed the purple-clad youth’s face, appearing very satisfied with those words. He couldn’t help but reveal a smile, which further enhanced his beautiful features, making him unforgettable to anyone who saw him.
At this moment, the youth looked at him intently, his eyes reflecting only Jiang Xuning. Even Jiang Xuning couldn’t help but feel his heart skip a beat; he slightly clenched his fist at his side to hide his flustered state.
“If Brother Xuning was thinking of me, why didn’t you write to me? These past few years, I’ve looked forward to it every day. I thought Brother Xuning had forgotten me and didn’t want me anymore.”
The youth spoke with sincere emotion. Combined with his natural beauty, his slightly furrowed brows added a touch of fragile grace, as if he had truly suffered some great grievance.
“How could that be?”
Jiang Xuning hurriedly denied it, his gaze shifting away. Naturally, he had written. When the youth had been away from home for only a month, snow-white paper and crumpled drafts had covered the floor. He had edited and revised, as if he had endless things to say, but in the end, he only left a few ordinary greetings.
What he hadn’t expected was that the letter would never reach Yu Heng’s hands. Half a month later, besides the returned letter, there were disciples from the Tianyan Sect who arrived together. It was then that he first realized the gap between himself as a mortal and Yu Heng, who had entered the immortal gate.
“How could I forget you?”
Jiang Xuning couldn’t help but murmur, his features unconsciously tinged with a bit of loneliness.
Yu Heng was merely feigning a reproachful tone. This person hadn’t contacted him for years, and he feared he had long been tossed to the back of his mind; only he himself had looked forward to it every day, so he inevitably harbored a bit of resentment. But now that he truly saw him, where could any other thoughts remain? Especially seeing that the complexion was far too pale, it caused him a bout of heartache, and even the last bit of resentment vanished completely. However, hearing the denial from the person before him, he still couldn’t help but feel a surge of joy.
“I knew it, Brother Xuning.”
The youth nestled into his embrace, unable to stop acting spoiled again.
Jiang Xuning could not remember how long it had been since he was this close to Yu Heng. Was it since he joined the Tianyan Sect? Or since the moment he drew his last breath? Regardless, he couldn’t remember clearly, but this kind of contact made him recall when the two were children. A faint smile unconsciously appeared on his pale face gentle and warm, just like in their childhood. He raised his hand to stroke the youth’s head, until an abrupt voice sounded, shattering this warm atmosphere.
“Junior Brother Yu.”
The voice was flat, yet it inexplicably made one feel a chill. Jiang Xuning could clearly feel the youth in his arms suddenly stiffening upon hearing this voice. He subconsciously looked up, and the first thing he saw was an extremely tall man dressed in black.
Just by standing there, the shadow he cast completely swallowed the two of them, in stark contrast to Jiang Xuning’s own weak body, which had long been tortured half-dead by illness.
Yet, what completely captivated Jiang Xuning was not just that, but also the man’s excessively handsome appearance.
Different from Yu Heng’s delicate beauty, this man was sharply and ruggedly handsome in a way characteristic of an adult male as if carved by a knife or hewn by an axe, like an unsheathed sword with its cold light fully revealed. Even standing next to Yu Heng, he was not overshadowed in the slightest, making him hard to ignore.
Inexplicably, an absurd thought began to germinate in his heart: he actually felt that the person before him and Yu Heng were indescribably well-matched.
“Senior Brother Huo.”
Yu Heng withdrew from the embrace. When he looked up again, the genuine joy from a moment ago was gone, replaced by a touch of respect toward the newcomer.
Huo?
Upon hearing this address, Jiang Xuning’s heart inexplicably skipped a beat. For some reason, he felt this was extraordinarily familiar, as if he had heard it somewhere, but he couldn’t quite remember for the moment.
It wasn’t until the man’s voice sounded, once again breaking the silence.
“Junior Brother Yu, this person is…?”
The man’s brow furrowed slightly. Looking at the two who were exceptionally close, his originally handsome face was now filled with gloom and a hint of displeasure. Even his tone carried an indescribable chill.
Being stared at by such a gaze, Jiang Xuning couldn’t help but feel a chill down his spine. His body even shook uncontrollably, and his face grew even paler.
Seeing this, Yu Heng stepped forward quickly, using his body to block that overly overbearing gaze. During the confrontation between the two, his expression also darkened significantly.
“Senior Brother Huo, this is my elder brother.”
There was clear dissatisfaction in his words.
Perhaps perceiving the displeasure of the person before him, although the man was dissatisfied with this explanation, he ultimately restrained himself a bit.
The suffocating sense of pressure dissipated in an instant. Jiang Xuning couldn’t help but breathe a long sigh of relief. Turning to look at A-Liang on the side, however, the servant had already slumped onto the ground in terror. This caused Jiang Xuning to feel a sense of dread toward the man before him.
Just as he was wondering who this person actually was, Yu Heng finally spoke again.
“Brother Xuning,” Yu Heng raised his hand to slowly release spiritual energy, carefully dispersing the surrounding chill. His grip on Jiang Xuning’s hand tightened as he said softly, “This is Senior Brother Huo. He is from the same sect as I, both under Immortal Venerable Zhongyi. He is called Huo Ling.”
Huo Ling, Huo Ling. The moment these two words came out, Jiang Xuning finally had a sudden realization. He wondered why he felt a strange familiarity; it turned out he actually knew him. He was the eldest Senior Brother of A-Heng in the book, his fated Dao companion, and also the person A-Heng had a grand wedding with before his death in his previous life.
