The Frenzied Savior - Chapter 5
Warning! Warning! Warning!
From a height of several hundred meters, roughly equivalent to a dozen-story building, the crowd below could only make out a tiny, microscopic dot. Given the fragility of the human body, a fall from such a height would inevitably end in a gruesome scene, leaving nothing but a shattered mess on the pavement.
Even though reports had been filed and the air force scrambled the moment that thin young man was snatched into the sky by the robot, the skirmish between Fu Qingya and the machine had been too fierce and too fast. In those short three minutes, there was simply no time for rescue to arrive.
The witnesses, who had watched Fu Qingya risk everything to save them, felt their eyes grow hot and red with desperation. Even as the harsh sunlight stung their retinas, they refused to blink, their gazes locked onto the figure plummeting through the air.
Whoosh—whoosh—whoosh—
The wind was violent and piercing, scraping against his skin with a painful bite. It tugged at Fu Qingya’s specialized silicone sportswear, which looked nothing like a standard school uniform, partially peeling it back to reveal a dark blue-black layer underneath.
Hidden beneath the fabric was a mechanical construct remarkably similar to the very robots attacking humans. It encased his body, clinging tightly to his fair skin like a second skin, serving as a desperate shield for the boy falling from the heavens.
[Warning! Warning! Warning!]
[Protective armor energy reserves are low! Please replenish energy immediately!]
A flowing blue light flickered across the suit before rapidly shifting into an urgent, pulsing red.
Fu Qingya’s expression darkened. His fingers, currently gripping the chassis of Combat Robot No. 28, were suddenly encased in a layer of black-blue machinery.
Crack—
With the precision of a surgeon’s scalpel, he pried open the core panel on the robot’s torso as if he were slicing through a watermelon. His mechanical fingertips plunged inside, seizing a translucent, deep blue plate-like object that pulsed with something resembling human veins.
“Warning! Warning! Combat Robot No. 28 core chip under attack. Self-destruct sequence compromised. Requesting instructions—”
“Re… ceiv… ing—”
Urgent red lights flashed in the robot’s eyes. In that instant, its entire body transformed into a swarm of mechanical chains, lashing out toward Fu Qingya like metallic vipers.
Yet, in that moment, Fu Qingya let out a sharp, brilliant smile. He leaned in close to the robot’s humanoid head, his voice almost intimate.
“Too late.”
Snap—
The red “veins” severed instantly. The chains and claws reaching for him went limp, clattering uselessly against the air.
Fu Qingya grabbed one of the robot’s chains with a firm grip and vaulted himself upward.
Thud—thud—
His boots, embedded with a specialized metal, slammed onto the robot’s metallic surface. Like magnets of opposing poles, they locked on instantly, anchoring him to the falling machine.
Whoosh—
The gale whipped at his clothes and sent his hair flying. Standing atop Combat Robot No. 28, Fu Qingya rode the machine as it hurtled toward the ground.
[Target is descending rapidly. Impact in sixty seconds. Activating anti-collision protocols.] [Fifty meters from surface. Energy critical. Please replenish energy immediately]
The flat, mechanical voice echoed in his ear. Fu Qingya raised his hand and squeezed. The deep blue translucent object shattered into a liquid state, and in the blink of an eye, it flowed at an unnatural speed into his metal-clad fingertips.
[New energy source detected. Replenishing—]
[Energy replenishment complete—]
[Reserve energy restored—]
[Energy levels sufficient. Emergency landing and anti-collision programs initiated—]
A faint, electronic blue glow shimmered across Fu Qingya’s pale cheeks. High in the sky where no one could see, he calmly adjusted his collar and pulled down his sleeves, hiding the mechanical suit beneath. Then, he braced his body, crouching slightly for the impact.
BOOM—
The man-sized Combat Robot No. 28 slammed into the earth. A massive cloud of rubble and dust billowed upward, obscuring everyone’s vision. Even though common sense told the onlookers that no human could survive such a high-velocity impact, they couldn’t help but stare into the swirling gray haze.
Clang—
A pair of slender, pale hands emerged from the dust. The owner of those hands flexed them for a moment, then tossed aside a mangled metal part with a look of blatant disgust.
Tap, tap, tap—
Steady, rhythmic footsteps echoed from within the dust cloud. The crowd’s eyes lit up.
The handsome, slightly boyish young man in the gold-rimmed glasses was okay!
Whether out of gratitude or pure awe at the miracle of a teenager walking away from a hundred-meter fall, the crowd stared in unison at the crash site.
Wearing his sportswear, the boy stepped out of the massive crater with a slow, measured stride. In one hand, he held a thin, translucent scalpel, while the other held a white handkerchief, which he used to meticulously wipe the blade.
His half-tied hair had long since come loose during the fight, several stray strands dancing wildly until their master tucked them back into place.
He smoothed the hair away from his forehead. With one hand, he tucked the scalpel away, and with the other, he removed his glasses and slid them into his pocket.
He interlaced his fingers, stretching his hands to work out the stiffness from overexertion. Then, Fu Qingya lifted his gaze, ignored the surrounding crowd entirely, and prepared to leave in silence.
Many of the onlookers were stunned. These were simple movements, yet he performed them with such crisp, rhythmic grace that it felt like watching the internal clockwork of a music box.
However, despite his youthful appearance, his cold, sharp features carried an intimidating presence. It was the kind of chilling aura one might feel when facing the crushing depths of the deep sea, leaving the crowd frozen in a daze.
“I am so glad you’re okay!”
Li Jiarun was the first to snap out of it. Seeing that Fu Qingya was about to leave, he hurried over, clutching his child and followed by his now-recovered wife.
Fu Qingya looked up. It was the unlucky family of three that had been targeted by Robot No. 28.
They looked at him with profound gratitude. There was no suspicion or fear in their eyes, none of the typical wariness people showed when encountering something or someone, far beyond the norm.
Fu Qingya paused. He gave the couple a slight nod, then glanced at the pale toddler in their arms.
“Take the child to the hospital.”
He thought of the human children back at the base who would die so easily from a simple illness or injury. A flicker of concern crossed his eyes, though he masked it quickly.
After a moment of internal debate, he couldn’t help but add the reminder.
The couple, who had been in a state of high tension until now, suddenly realized their child had been choked for a long time. Panicking, they fumbled for their phones to call for an ambulance.
By then, the police officers had finally regained their composure. They began to soothe the crowd while sending a few officers over to approach Fu Qingya.
As the officers stepped in front of him, they saw him pick up his skateboard from where it had rolled away. He stepped onto it, clearly intending to depart.
“Wait!”
A deep, magnetic voice rang out. It didn’t come from the officers standing nearby, but from further away.
The crowd, which had been fixated on Fu Qingya, only now noticed the sudden arrival of numerous police cars and ambulances, along with several helicopters hovering above.
The rescue teams had arrived without anyone noticing, only making their presence known now that the danger had passed.
The voice came from a police cruiser parked closest to the crater. The door creaked open, and a pair of black leather boots stepped onto the pavement.
It was a very tall man with short, cropped hair.
