The Frenzied Savior - Chapter 4
When the police station first received the emergency call from a well-meaning tourist, they dispatched officers immediately, but in truth, they didn’t quite believe the report.
Beyond the fact that prank calls were common, the main issue was that the “assailant” described by the caller simply couldn’t exist in reality.
In the year 2021, Earth had already developed robots with basic intelligence, and the technology was advancing every day. However, there was no way anyone could manufacture a robot like the one the tourist described, one that could “wear a bear mask and pretend to be a friendly staff member, look exactly like a real person once the mask was off, and could kidnap people and fight back,” let alone one where “the entire body is mechanical and the arm can transform into a gun.”
The officers had only ever seen that kind of thing in sci-fi blockbusters.
Robots in movies could, at best, be considered a vision of what human robotics might look like in the distant future. To actually build one would take at least several centuries, it certainly wasn’t something achievable at the current stage of development.
Yet here they were, with someone reporting that such a robot had appeared in real life, had kidnapped someone, and had even fired a cannon.
It felt as though an innocent, wide-eyed toddler was pulling at your hand and telling you with a straight face, “Ultraman is real, he stepped right out of the TV.”
It was a situation that left one feeling both helpless and amused.
Of course, no matter how bizarre the reasoning behind a report, the police, who always prioritize the safety of citizens’ lives, rushed to the scene at once.
And then, they saw it with their own eyes. There stood a robot, though it had been dismantled into a ragged state, it matched the caller’s description almost perfectly.
To be honest, the officers’ first instinct was to blink hard, wondering if they were experiencing a group hallucination. However, the robot incident was very much a reality.
While their minds raced with amazement and conspiracy theories, the officers split into two groups. One went to comfort the injured and traumatized victims, while the other headed toward the young boy with the youthful face, who possessed an intellect and manual dexterity far beyond his years, intending to secure the robot.
Before they could reach him, the red light in the battered robot’s eyes suddenly flared. Its only remaining intact parts, its legs, suddenly transformed into two iron chains that coiled tightly around the boy’s waist.
Beep—beep—beep—
“Combat Unit No. 28 is severely damaged,” a rigid, mechanical voice croaked from the robot’s mouth, which now exposed half of its metal skeleton. “Yes, Master. Combat Unit No. 28 has initiated the self-destruct sequence from the mutual destruction protocol.”
As the voice spoke, the red glow in its eyes grew even brighter.
The officers’ eyes widened in an instant, and their hearts sank. Did that robot mean it was going to take the boy down with it in an explosion?
The police stopped in their tracks. One officer with a square, rugged face, clearly a captain, signaled the others to fall back. He alone took several quick strides toward the boy and the robot, pulling out his phone to call the fire department to bring equipment to cut the chains.
In the next second, two mechanical arms equipped with guns extended from the robot’s back. One aimed at the expressionless boy, who seemed entirely unfazed by the impending self-destruction, while the other aimed at the approaching officer.
Bang—
Accompanied by the ticking of the self-destruct countdown, both mechanical arms fired simultaneously.
Two glowing bullets shot out, one toward the policeman and one toward Fu Qingya.
The agile officer threw himself into a side roll the moment he heard the sound.
Meanwhile, Fu Qingya used one hand to snap the chain around his waist with raw strength, while his other hand raised a scalpel, tilting it slightly.
Boom— Clang—
The roar of the explosion drowned out the sound of metal striking metal.
The officers who had been ordered to retreat watched in shock as a massive crater was blown into the floor of the amusement park.
The power of that shot was practically comparable to a small bomb!
That thought flashed through the minds of every officer. Then, as if remembering something, they looked toward the boy standing next to the robot in terror.
Could a boy possibly survive a bullet with that much power?
Then, in the next instant, they saw it. With one hand still gripping the broken chain at his waist, the boy raised the scalpel and effortlessly flicked the bullet away.
Another massive roar echoed. The officers’ eyes were as wide as saucers, their jaws nearly hitting the floor.
Holy crap! Is this kid some kind of Superman?
Or was that scalpel some kind of legendary treasure? How else could he snap a thick chain with his bare hands and then use a tiny blade to deflect a shot that hit like a mini-bomb?
Before they could ponder further, the robot, having missed both shots and lost its chains, attacked again.
The snapped halves of the chains retracted into its hollow thighs, clicking as they transformed into thrusters. From the stumps of its dismantled arms, four mechanical limbs sprouted. Its face, half human skin and half metal, shifted and clicked until it became a monster with jagged, predatory fangs.
The mechanical beast’s four arms moved like lightning, grabbing Fu Qingya by the shoulders and waist. The leg thrusters ignited instantly, shooting him high into the air. Simultaneously, its massive head lunged at Fu Qingya, mouth agape to reveal razor-sharp teeth.
High altitude, total restraint, and a monster’s assault, for a fragile human, this was a dead end. A desperate situation with no hope of survival.
The police and the Li family, witnessing this sequence of events, felt their eyes redden with a mix of worry, guilt, and terror.
Hundreds of meters in the air, the cold wind whipped against Fu Qingya’s face, chasing away his lingering drowsiness. He stared intently at the head lunging toward him. Instead of flinching, he reached out with excitement and grabbed the head.
The sharp, serrated teeth sank into his long, pale fingers. Bright red blood leaked through the gaps of his hand, and though the sting of pain registered, Fu Qingya visibly grew more exhilarated.
“Features include self-repair and camouflage.”
“This really is…”
“A perfect and precious material.”
Fu Qingya’s blood-stained hands firmly restrained the monstrous head that was trying to tear his throat out. His previously cold features softened into a strange kind of tenderness.
The corners of his mouth curled up, his eyes smiling, yet those deep dark orbs were filled with a fanatical, obsessive light.
In this moment, he looked eerie and utterly mad.
With a low chuckle, Fu Qingya ignored the fact that his body was dangling mid-air, supported only by the grip on his shoulders and waist. Using his hands locked onto the monster’s head as an anchor and the mechanical arms around his waist as leverage, he forcibly shifted his posture in the sky.
In an instant, Fu Qingya and the robot went from back-to-back to face-to-face.
The skin of his ankles pressed against the robot’s cold, rough mechanical thrusters. His firm abdomen pressed against the robot’s partially dismantled midsection, the icy contact causing a reflexive shiver to run through his body.
Since the mechanical arms never let go, when Fu Qingya shifted positions, the arms were forced to move with him by a surge of strength that far exceeded human limits. In a sense, he had successfully tied himself and the robot together.
Once he was firmly anchored to the machine, Fu Qingya applied pressure with his hands, dragging the monster’s head right in front of his eyes.
He focused on admiring the hideous, ferocious face while using his punctured thumb to rub back and forth against the unique metal of the skull.
“You really are beautiful,” Fu Qingya murmured. The gaze in his black eyes was so sharp it seemed as though he wanted to peer right through the robot’s core.
After admiring it for a moment, without any warning, Fu Qingya raised a free leg and kicked the thruster with devastating force.
Following a loud crash, the thruster he kicked was completely destroyed.
Amidst the collective gasps of the people below, Fu Qingya and the robot began to plummet from the sky at high speed.
