Chapter 8: Stealing the Wife in a Stand-in Novel (Part 8)
After receiving Shen Chuli’s approval, the driver drove Chen Suihe toward the company. As soon as she got out of the car, a beautiful secretary came forward to greet her. After swiping her badge, the secretary led her into a private elevator.
Along the way, the secretary was very talkative, answering every question and constantly praising Shen Chuli. Chen Suihe was almost brainwashed by the glowing review.
“Is… there anything… special… about her today?” Chen Suihe asked tentatively.
The secretary pushed open the office door, paused for a moment, and then seemed to remember something, smiling behind her hand. “President Shen is quite bold today, showing off many hickeys and bite marks on her neck. She said they were left by her naughty lover.”
“Please wait a moment; President Shen will be here as soon as her meeting ends.” After settling Chen Suihe on the office sofa and giving a few instructions, the secretary left.
Chen Suihe’s ears were ringing so loudly she barely heard the instructions; the word “lover” kept circling in her mind.
Aaaaah!
She covered her burning cheeks and curled up, screaming silently: How can Shen Chuli be so, so, so shameless!
What lover? It’s all just a little trick for her games! Chen Suihe tried to brainwash herself, pushing down the palpitations in her heart.
As the temperature on her face gradually receded, Chen Suihe took off her backpack and curiously surveyed the cold office. Like the house before, it was decorated in a very harsh palette of black, white, and gray. The only splash of bright color was a pot of chubby green succulents next to the computer, clearly cared for meticulously by its owner.
Chen Suihe found it familiar and walked over to look. Sure enough, it was her “Hehe Pot” that had been mysteriously missing for a long time!
On her day off last month, Chen Suihe had bought two small potted plants from a vendor at the school gate one succulent and one cactus naming them “Hehe Pot” and “Chuchu Ball.” Later, Hehe Pot had mysteriously vanished! For the sake of the only survivor, Chuchu Ball, Chen Suihe had moved it to her bedside to care for it personally.
When Shen Chuli returned, she saw Chen Suihe sitting in the executive chair, huffily clutching the Hehe Pot with a look of interrogation. Shen Chuli walked over with a smile and took the succulent from her hands. It was only then that Chen Suihe noticed Shen Chuli’s calculated outfit for the day!
Seeing the hickeys and bite marks turning purple on her fair skin, Chen Suihe’s face exploded in a blush. Her originally confident interrogation faltered and turned into: “Sha… shameless.”
Knowing she was embarrassed, Shen Chuli deliberately pulled her collar wider to reveal a hickey on her chest. “Does it look good?”
Chen Suihe averted her eyes, not daring to look at her. The distance between them closed, and just as they were about to touch, someone knocked and entered. Chen Suihe looked toward the door as if seeing a savior.
It was the secretary who had brought her up. The secretary looked at them and adjusted her glasses: “Cousin, this is an office. Tone down the roleplay. Aunt and the others are coming back for a meeting tomorrow; it’ll be hard to clean up.”
Having said her piece, the secretary turned and left, thoughtfully closing the door behind her.
“Cousin?” Chen Suihe’s little brain couldn’t quite process this. “She… you…”
“She’s my mother’s sister’s daughter.” Shen Chuli sat down with the girl in her lap. “Tomorrow is a holiday. You’re going to meet your in-laws; are you scared?”
Chen Suihe’s little brain finally worked quickly for once. She scrambled out of Shen Chuli’s arms, stomped to the side, and put her hands on her hips: “Liar! Shameless! Not… meeting them!”
That sulky energy was quite endearing, and Shen Chuli rested her head on her hand, chuckling. “That won’t do; I’ve already told my parents,” Shen Chuli teased. “Are you really not going to accompany me?”
Meeting Shen Chuli’s parents was not in Chen Suihe’s plan at all. This little robot had originally only wanted to clumsily stand up for herself; later, she was taken by Shen Chuli to see the world and relearned how to speak and go to school because of her help. But at this point, her wildest fantasy was merely to use the excuse of “revenge” to secretly and unilaterally fall in love with Shen Chuli.
How could someone not fall for a person like Shen Chuli?
Seeing Chen Suihe fall silent, the smile on Shen Chuli’s lips faded. After a long while, she sighed. “I didn’t tell them. They’re coming back for work matters; no one will force you to meet them, don’t worry.” Shen Chuli walked over and hugged her. “No one can force you to do anything you don’t want to do—not even me.”
The two tacitly moved past the subject. Chen Suihe regained her smile and stumbling told her about funny stories from school, to which Shen Chuli responded with smiles.
Because Chen Suihe’s health had been poor before, Shen Chuli was always very concerned. She had booked a physical exam at a private hospital that morning and took her straight there after finishing work. Chen Suihe was used to the monthly checkups and was even familiar with the layout.
However, today she ran into someone she had deliberately tried to forget. The moment she saw Xu Hao, the color drained from Chen Suihe’s face.
Running into his former little plaything at the hospital made Xu Hao feel excited in addition to being surprised. Some things, once tasted, are hard to quit. He was clearly in an unstable state. Chen Suihe’s mind was screaming for her to run, but her body stood frozen, unable to move a step. As Xu Hao approached, the scars on her body that had already healed began to throb with phantom pain.
When Shen Chuli came over with the report, she saw Xu Hao raising his hand to touch Chen Suihe’s cheek.
“Get lost!” She strode forward, slapping Xu Hao’s hand away and pulling the dazed Chen Suihe behind her.
At first sight of Shen Chuli, Xu Hao was delighted. But then, he saw the marks on her skin. Xu Hao rushed forward like a madman, trying to grab Shen Chuli’s neck. Chen Suihe, who had been standing blankly, suddenly found strength from nowhere when she saw him about to touch Shen Chuli’s neck. She lunged forward and knocked him over with her head.
Shen Chuli caught her just in time, but Xu Hao wasn’t so lucky. He fell straight to the ground, his tailbone making a faint cracking sound. Xu Hao’s “fair-weather friends” finally noticed the commotion; seeing him lying on the ground wailing and clutching his tailbone, they scrambled over to help him up.
Chen Suihe’s eyes were red, and like a mother hen protecting her chick, she stood stubbornly in front of Shen Chuli. Seeing the crowd in chaos and that Xu Hao and his group weren’t paying attention to them, she quickly pulled Shen Chuli to flee the scene.
Chen Suihe led her on a light jog all the way to the car. Only after getting inside and locking the windows did she finally let out a long breath.
“I… knocked him… over.” Chen Suihe looked at Shen Chuli, laughing and crying at the same time. “Turns out… he isn’t… that strong.”
Shen Chuli quietly listened to her stumbling words, letting her vent all the grievances and sadness in her heart.
“You were amazing,” Shen Chuli pulled her into her arms, comforting her softly. “You even protected me. You are a warrior.”
Chen Suihe turned her tears into a smile, mumbling, “I want… to be a fairy.”
“Okay, be a fairy.”
The physical exam wasn’t finished, but Chen Suihe’s current state wasn’t suitable for turning back. Last month’s report was similar enough to the items finished today, so Shen Chuli took her home.
Due to the high mental tension followed by a crying spell, Chen Suihe fell asleep in the car and showed no signs of waking up. After carrying her to the bedroom and settling her in, Shen Chuli quietly closed the door and headed to the study. The blue light of the computer reflected on her face; her gaze was sharp.
Li Meng was very surprised to be contacted by the “mysterious person” during work hours. She made an excuse to ditch a clingy rich heir and found a blind spot in the surveillance to check her phone. The message had only two words: Begin.
Just those two words made Li Meng’s heart throb.
“Don’t forget my conditions,” she replied, suppressing her excitement. The other side replied: “Of course.”
Li Meng put away her phone, a charming smile appearing on her face. She swayed her hips as she returned to the stage of filthy wine, sex, wealth, and power.
On the internet, the video creators who had been sent lawyer letters by the Xu Group seemed to be having a collective “team building” event, releasing a bunch of three-to-four-second clips. The content was so graphic that by the time many people finished watching, they were taken down. However, quick-handed people saved the videos. Since they couldn’t be spread on major platforms, they were edited, blurred, and circulated in small groups on minor video apps.
The bloggers who released the videos never mentioned Xu Hao or the Xu Group’s name from start to finish. By the time the Xu Group’s PR department discovered it, it was too late. The videos had already spread widely. Now, unless they had magic to erase everyone’s memory, they could only watch as the influence of the event expanded step by step.
Old Chairman Xu was currently unconscious in the hospital, and Xu Hao was unreachable and missing. To protect the corporate image, the PR department took it upon themselves to play dead. Playing dead was better than trying to silence people the consequences of the last attempt at silencing were still hanging on the trending searches. Instead of letting the fire spread further, it was better to let it burn; in the end, the PR department would only be called incompetent, rather than being labeled as oppressive.
None of this had anything to do with Chen Suihe. The biggest difficulty before her was the upcoming city-wide competency exams. Although the school had conducted many mock exams, Chen Suihe couldn’t help but be nervous when the day finally arrived. To train the students’ psychological endurance and ensure they weren’t afraid for the actual Gaokao, the exams were conducted strictly according to Gaokao standards, earning them the nickname “Little Gaokao.”
During those days, Shen Chuli personally picked her up and dropped her off, fearing Chen Suihe would collapse from nerves. Fortunately, the results were good. It was just that on the last day, Chen Suihe was so excited after finishing that she accidentally sprained her ankle while going downstairs; otherwise, everything was perfect!
After the exams, the school gave them three days off to adjust. The results weren’t out yet, so Chen Suihe seized the chance to act like the “boss.” Lying on the sofa, she propped up her feet and ordered Shen Chuli around to do this and that.
However, she felt like something was missing. Chen Suihe smacked her lips and suddenly remembered to ask: “Why… no cherries… lately?”
