Chapter 7: Stealing the Wife in a Stand-in Novel (Part 7)
At the mention of the word “school,” Chen Suihe’s eyes suddenly lit up, and she could hardly stay seated. She hurriedly tried to shovel down the food in her bowl, but was reminded to chew slowly. Only when school was used as a “threat” did she reluctantly slow down and obediently clean her plate.
Shen Chuli wasn’t bluffing. Once the girl finished eating, Shen Chuli unhurriedly opened her laptop. A group of people appeared on the screen; by the time they finished their self-introductions, Chen Suihe’s head was spinning.
“Not… going to… school?” she asked dizzily.
“We need to check your foundation first,” Shen Chuli pulled the girl’s chair closer to her. “These teachers will assess your current level. After you enroll, they will also serve as your private tutors.”
Although she loved learning, Chen Suihe didn’t think she loved it that much. She let out a whimper and buried her head in Shen Chuli’s lap. “Want… University. Restore… enrollment. No… High school.”
This was one thing Shen Chuli wouldn’t let her act spoiled about. Digging the girl out of her lap, Shen Chuli pinched her nose and said, “Your previous school and major weren’t very good. If you could get into university in that educational environment, wouldn’t it be easier now to get into a top-tier university and a better major?”
Before Chen Suihe could shake her head and retreat, Shen Chuli continued: “This time, you can choose the major you truly love. You pick the school, not the other way around. You can have a bright and brilliant future.”
Her voice was gentle yet firm, making her words incredibly convincing. Chen Suihe looked up into her eyes. The smile and tenderness reflected there made Chen Suihe nod her head involuntarily.
“Good. Then let the placement exams begin.” Shen Chuli stood up and placed the laptop in front of her, ignoring her pitiful, pleading eyes. She left with a cold, ruthless, yet smiling demeanor.
Although the questions prepared by the teachers weren’t numerous, they were extremely complex; many were types Chen Suihe had never even seen before.
In the living room, Shen Chuli wore gold-rimmed blue-light glasses. Her mouse scrolled through the score sheets on the screen while Chen Suihe, feeling like she’d been stung, waited nervously and guiltily.
“Let’s go back tomorrow.” Taking off the glasses and tossing them on the table, Shen Chuli looked at her. “How about in-person classes?”
Chen Suihe was puzzled, tilting her head. “I… did poorly. You… not angry?”
After all, Shen Chuli had found so many excellent teachers; she must value her grades highly. And her performance this time… the moment she saw the exam papers, Chen Suihe knew she was in trouble. She had dug desperately into the depths of her brain for old knowledge, but it was to no avail. She wasn’t a naturally gifted genius; she was a hardworking, “slow” child. Formulas and concepts that others mastered in one or two tries took her four or five, or even seven or eight, to understand—and only after repeated practice could she apply them.
Chen Suihe was afraid Shen Chuli would get angry the moment she saw the transcript, and she was prepared to be scolded.
To her surprise, Shen Chuli didn’t scold her at all. Instead, she gently pulled her into her arms and explained the problems in a soft voice. Shen Chuli seemed to have a magical way of teaching; every obscure, trap-ridden question became simple and easy to understand under her analysis. Watching Chen Suihe’s pen move more easily and cheerfully, Shen Chuli smiled.
The next day, the plane pierced the clouds and landed at the airport in the capital. Stepping onto this land again after so long, Chen Suihe felt a bit dazed.
Though it felt like a long time, it had only been a few months. But to Chen Suihe, it felt like a lifetime ago as if she had been reborn. During this time, Shen Chuli had taken her to see the Northern Lights, the vast deserts, the great oceans… she had seen the world. She was no longer the little girl who would lose her mind over a few clumsy threats.
Studying was exhausting, especially when a study plan and private tutors surrounded her the moment she opened her eyes. Every day after school, Chen Suihe would simply wash up and fall fast asleep, her schedule completely missing Shen Chuli’s.
But under this heavy pressure, there were many benefits. One afternoon, the teachers brought an exam for her to complete in class. They graded it on the spot and left with satisfied smiles. Afterward, Chen Suihe keenly noticed that her study pace had slackened a bit. Feeling confused, she finally caught Shen Chuli one day and brought it up.
“Did I forget to tell you?” Shen Chuli pinched her now-fleshy cheek. “That was the transfer student competency test. Congratulations, Student Chen Suihe, you passed. You are a high school senior once again.”
“School starts next month. Enjoy your new senior year life.”
Shen Chuli rubbed her cheeks red, and this time, the girl didn’t dodge. After a few minutes of being stunned, Chen Suihe hugged her and cheered excitedly like a carefree child. Once the excitement passed, she calmed down and trotted to the bedroom to pack. Shen Chuli followed, and seeing her stuffing clothes for all four seasons into the suitcase, she couldn’t help but laugh out of exasperation.
“Heartless little thing,” she scolded with a smile, flicking Chen Suihe’s forehead.
Chen Suihe was defiant: “You said… must… study… hard!”
This one sentence left Shen Chuli speechless. She could only pinch her cheeks in play until the white skin turned red before her anger dissipated.
To better prepare for her upcoming life as a senior, Chen Suihe practically soaked herself in books. Every day she was either consolidating her studies or whispering into her phone to practice speaking. The “Great Plan” she had recently picked up was shelved once again.
Shen Chuli tucked her in, unable to resist pinching her cheek. With a “three days of fishing and two days of drying nets” approach to her plan, who would she actually manage to seduce if the target wasn’t willing?
When Chen Suihe, the transfer student, first arrived at school, she caused quite a stir. Although speaking was an effort for her, she had an exceptionally good personality gentle and slow, like a harmless little animal, with a particularly sweet smile. Although she was a few years older than her classmates, she had no air of superiority and was very approachable.
Since Chen Suihe started school, Shen Chuli had also become busy. Whether it was corporate or private matters, everything had to pass through her hands. Thus, the task of picking up Chen Suihe was forced onto the driver. Occasionally, when she wasn’t busy, Shen Chuli would come herself, only to walk right into a “confession scene” every time.
In the car, Shen Chuli squinted her eyes, watching Chen Suihe smile as she accepted an envelope from a blushing boy standing opposite her. For some reason, Shen Chuli felt her canines itching.
Chen Suihe sat in the passenger seat with her backpack, buckling her seatbelt while saying cheerfully, “Auntie Wang, let’s sneak to the snack street today, okay? Don’t tell Chuli.”
“So, you’ve been taking people behind my back to sneak food.”
A fair hand took over the seatbelt that was proving difficult to buckle. Chen Suihe looked up blankly. Her silly, stunned expression amused Shen Chuli slightly. After clicking the belt into place, Shen Chuli started the car, but her words were dripping with sarcasm: “Student Chen is quite popular, huh? Are you considering a romance with a younger guy?”
Hearing this, Chen Suihe snapped out of it and waved her hands frantically to show her loyalty, but she only received a cold chuckle soaked in aged vinegar.
As the car drove steadily, it moved further and further away from the snack street Chen Suihe was dreaming of. Near the house, she finally realized: “Shen Chuli, are you… jealous?”
“Ha?” Shen Chuli was nearly driven mad by the dense little robot. “Is that all you want to say to me?”
Chen Suihe seemed to have suddenly unlocked her “governor and conception vessels” (vital energy). After the car was parked, she unbuckled her belt and clingily pressed against her. “I didn’t agree to anything. It was just school-out time with so many people around; refusing him publicly would hurt his self-esteem.”
Seeing Shen Chuli still ignoring her, Chen Suihe bit her lip and decided to use her ultimate move.
“Chu!” (Mwah!)
Chen Suihe leaned in and planted a super loud kiss on the corner of her lips. “Don’t… be angry.”
Looking at her damp eyes, even though there was a clear intent to act cute, Shen Chuli couldn’t find the heart to stay upset with her. “Go on, sit back and buckle up.”
Chen Suihe chuckled and sat back obediently.
She thought the matter was over, but during evening self-study the next day, the homeroom teacher gave a heavy lecture on the “dangers and problems of puppy love,” frequently glancing in her direction. Chen Suihe realized immediately: someone had snitched!
When school let out, she returned to the car in a huff. Seeing today’s driver was the familiar Auntie Wang, she was about to act spoiled to get her to go to the snack street when Shen Chuli’s voice suddenly came through the car speakers: “Don’t even think about the snack street. Auntie Wang, take her straight home.”
Chen Suihe was going to die of anger! Inside that little head of hers, she brooded for a whole night and came up with a world-shaking idea.
In the middle of the night, after sneaking out of Shen Chuli’s bedroom, she stood in the hallway with a bright red lip, hands on her hips, laughing silently—only to accidentally wince as she felt the sting where a sharp canine had nicked the corner of her mouth.
The next day, Chen Suihe deliberately dragged her feet until Shen Chuli got up before heading out. Seeing the “masterpiece” she had left on the woman’s face and neck, Chen Suihe puffed out her chest like a victorious little peacock, heading into the car with her head held high.
The marks all over her neck gave the housemaid a fright, thinking she hadn’t cleaned properly and the mistress had been bitten by poisonous bugs.
“It was indeed a little poisonous bug,” Shen Chuli smiled, stroking her neck. “A not-so-smart one at that.”
After politely declining the maid’s offer of ointment, Shen Chuli specifically chose a square-neck top. The neckline was just right to reveal several sharp bite marks on her collarbone.
Having committed the “crime,” Chen Suihe spent the day in a mix of excitement and trepidation. She spent the daylight hours imagining a hundred scenarios of Shen Chuli feeling sad or ashamed after discovering what she had done. To verify her theory, Chen Suihe made her very first request to go to the company to find Shen Chuli.
